I am, admittedly, not the biggest Star Wars fan. Like, I enjoy the prequel trilogy and the original three films aren’t bad. But other than that it was never really my thing. My brother, on the other hand, LOVES Star Wars and all things Star Wars. The number of things I have learned from this man now that he’s living at my house while he attends school just regarding Star Wars and Obi Wan Kenobi’s backstory is a little insane.
I kind of picked this up out of curiosity, but also just to see if it was something that he would enjoy. And while I can’t say I really know all of the things I probably should to understand what’s going on in these stories, it’s pretty clear to me that they’re a pretty good gift for any die-hard fans of the world.
This was a great teaser for upcoming books! I love Star Wars, and while I’ve struggled to get into the High Republic book, Claudia Gray’s voice is so great for this story! Characters ripple off the page, solid dialogue, and well-paced action.
As Star Wars continues to build out its new canon, their publishing plans have a set of books that are interrelated but not necessarily direct sequels. This sampler is a helpful way to get a quick sense of which content is written for which audience level and where you might be most interested in diving in.
Really enjoyed this! Cannot wait to read more from these authors. It kept me interested the entire time.
This is great material for any Star Wars fan, covering a time period in the Star Wars universe that has often been speculated at and hinted about in the lore. There are some intriguing characters, and a wide variety of alien races represented. Pick this up and get acquainted with The High Republic!
A lovely preview into the very beginnings of the High Republic initiative! As a lover of the franchise, I loved seeing how each story set up its own little corner of this new era's galaxy, as well as how they still clearly connected and will be important to one another. While they are all very splendid, my very favorite was A Test Of Courage!
This was a great sampler that made me excited to read both books! As a fan of Star Wars, I am looking forward to delving deeper into the history and meeting new characters.
Revisiting these samplers after having read the full books, I think these snippets perfectly capture possible readers in this new era of Star Wars. They’re able to entice anticipation while maintaining enough secrecy to not spoil the books or reveal too much so that readers feel they don’t need to purchase the full novels.
Star Wars High Republic books A Test of Courage by Justina Ireland and Into the Dark by Claudia Gray were both entertaining and both written quite well.
I did enjoy Into the Dark by Claudia Gray a bit more, but I’m fairly sure that it’s because it’s a book geared to older readers than A Test of Courage.
A Test of Courage-
I did like Vern just fine.. but I feel ALL the boys in this book are lackluster and not developed as throughly as both girls. The story is a lot of telling not showing. . And Vern is a Jedi master at the end of the book? at 15 years old? .... what? Anakin couldn’t be on the Jedi council and he was in his 20’s and he was, ya know, THE CHOSEN ONE.... but Vern is taking on a padwan?? This makes the book much less enjoyable for me as it seems to see the already established canon and says “canon?..nope. DONT know her”.
So I guess this book just wasn’t for me.
Into the Dark by: Claudia Gray;
I enjoyed this book more than the other. I do gravitate to Claudia’s books as I have many of her non Star Wars and Star Wars books in my collection.
This book is written beautifully and flushes out the world and the characters to make them truly come alive on the page.
Her voice and earnestness with which she tells this story is EXACTLY WHY I love her work.
Also, Orla and Reath Silas are great new additions to the lore/canon.
Overall I truly enjoyed this book and look forward to Claudias next offering into the Star Wars universe.
THANK YOU for letting me read these sneak peeks - there's just not a Star Wars title that my teen and I don't get excited about, and we especially LOVE Claudia Gray!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me this Arc in exchange for a honest review...
I enjoyed this, I like the new take on the star wars universe. I can't wait to get reading the full book!
Oh wow!!! The High Republic era has arrived and I couldn't be more excited to continue reading these books. The concept of the High Republic within the Star Wars franchise is such a clever place to explore from a storytelling perspective since you can do almost anything with it. The authors are not bound by the Skywalker Saga to stick to a certain timeline or to include certain characters. There is a particular freedom to this time in Star Wars history that I love. I'm definitely continuing with these books as soon as possible.
An interesting and fun start to a new era in the mythology of Star Wars. It's great to spend time in the new canon with more Jedi at the height of their power and influence.
This was a good book sampler. I was able to read a couple of chapters of each new Star Wars The High Republic books.
The sample chapters gave you just enough to read to get you interested to read more of each book.
I just finished reading Star Wars The High Republic A Test of Courage. I really enjoyed that book and wrote a great review for it. Now I’m on to book two, Star Wars The High Republic Into The Dark. I look forward to reading more of it.
I loved the characters in A Test of Courage. I found them very relatable. I’m hoping Into the Dark is just as good of a story.
Trust in the Force.
Thank you to Netgalley and Disney Publishing Worldwide for the free sampler.
A great introduction to the high republic era of star wars. It was great that titles aimed at differing age groups were added to appeal to a wider audience however the both will be suited to star wars or general sci-fi readers.
Both samplers were excellent and I am now reading the full books based off this sampler.
These are brilliant! I am a big fan of Claudia Gray so I was excited to have the opportunity to review some excerpts. I think that these books get better and better so really looking forward to what comes next
Enjoyable Star Wars stories for middle grade readers. The writing was definitely for a younger audience than I expected. Older teens would find it stilted.
The chapter sampler was a read in introducing the new era and new characters of the High Republic. I really enjoyed reading both samples and can't wait to read the rest of the story.
An exciting selection/introduction to a new Star Wars era for kids and teens. Fun new characters to fall in love with!
This sampler was a great preview of the upcoming Star Wars- The High Republic books. Both titles in this sampler provided just enough of an insight into the plot to make me want to read more.
