I’m definitely going to read the other books in the series. While it was a stand alone book, I think maybe I missed some of the nuances of the characters and relationships because I had not read the previous books. It’s a ripper of a crime thriller and I loved the grittiness of the setting. I felt quite immersed in the whole process of resolving the mystery and highly recommend this for lovers of this type of book.

Police Detective Vic Lenoski had quite a dilemma. Following a lead, he and his partner walk into a trap. Ultimately he has to choose between saving his partner who's caught in a house fire or the woman who set the fire and who knows who took his daughter and three other young women.Now on leave from his own injuries due to the house fire that hospitalized his partner and forced him on medical leave, he starts a frantic investigation and search on his own for Cora Stills who burned down her own house before disappearing. Estranged from his wife Anne, and his life and career in a downward spiral, Detective Lenoski finds himself following leads, hoping to rebuild his life before it is all gone.

This is a fast-paced action-packed novel featuring a man ... a cop ... who's always been on the right side of the law. In trying to find his daughter, he must break his own personal moral compass to get at the truth. Suspense starts on the first page and holds steady throughout leading to a surprising conclusion. Although 3rd in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone. However, I do recommend reading them in order .. it's a fantastic series.

I had not known this writer until discovering this third book in a series of mysteries set in Pittsburgh, PA. The author has written another gripping tale giving enough information to gain a sense of the past of his characters without missing anything in the story. He uses his setting well without depending on it to support his writing. It is fantastic to recognize areas in the burgh while enjoying an intense series of events. I hope he continues to write more of this series as the characters are strong and authentic with true human faults and foibles. Anyone longing for thrilling read and a revisit to familiar places will not go wrong with this one.

The Things That Last Forever is the third book in the Vic Lenoski Mystery series written by Peter W.J. Hayes. This was a new author for me which I am always interested in finding and reading. In the beginning I found the book to be just a little confusing mostly I am sure because I had not read the previous two books, having said that I did find this to be an enjoyable read. The book was filled with many twists and turns, and this book makes you really stop and think about just how far you would go to find and save someone you love. Would you break the rules, or would you follow the laws that you have been trained to do in your job. This book will keep you turning the pages, I was surprised some by the ending but not in a bad way. I definitely would recommend this book to others.

I liked this novel once I got past the initial confusing opening. It was obvious to me this was a sequel and not having read the first two in the series, I was a bit lost. Sufficient backstory does come in later to make the novel enjoyable. Much of the plot deals with the personal feelings of the police detective, Vic. His thoughts and actions were difficult for me to understand until well into the book when more of the stories of the earlier novels in the series was revealed.

I recommend reading the prior novel in the series, not just for backstory but also because Hayes' writing style is engaging. Once I understood what was going on, I was hooked. The plot revolves around human trafficking but with a personal emphasis. Vic is hunting for the woman who tried to kill his partner but who is also the woman he thinks trafficked his missing daughter. Hayes did a good job portraying the feelings Vic had as he pursued the fugitive.

Except for not having enough initial information to have this novel read well on its own, I liked it. The character development was done well as was the action. I will be looking for more from this author.

Vic Lenoski is a cop with a gravely injured partner, a missing daughter, a marriage on the rocks, and a need to find answers.  Taking matters into his own hands, he follows some leads to North Dakota, where he will face the blurred lines between right and wrong.

This novel has everything I love about a good thriller/mystery, from solid characters to head-spinning twists.  Although I hadn't read the first two books in the series, the author provided enough back-story to inform me without bogging down the narrative. I really have no complaints about this one; highly recommend.

I really enjoyed this book even though it was heartbreaking, alot if twists and turns which I didn't expect but an ever more surprising ending. The characters really draw you in and you start to really have emotions for them. A good read for anyone.
