This was my first book by this author, and I was honestly pretty underwhelmed. The whole story felt a bit slow, and even by the end I felt like nothing had really happened. In the beginning I felt like I was playing catchup to events that happened in the previous two books in the series; it was eventually explained enough, but it took a bit to get everything answered.
Any possibility of tension between Persie and Coll disappeared too quickly; I felt like Persie went from not planning to have anything to do with Coll, romantically speaking, to starting a physical relationship in the blink of an eye. I never felt like we got a good understanding of why she changed her mind. And from there, I just didn't get enough from their relationship to really be invested in any outcome.
I really enjoyed and appreciated how well the two main characters communicate in this novel. These two just fit. I would have liked to have seen a bit more work done on the resolution between the men and their mother but the romance itself was very satisfying.
This is book 3 of the Wild Wicked Highlanders Series. Coll MacTaggert has been told to find a wife and get married, or lose the land that he loves. Persephone Jones doesn't know exactly what she ants, but she knows she has to stay alive, so when Coll helps helps her, will she lose her heart in the bargain?
In Hit Me with Your Best Scot Coll McTaggart is the last of the McTaggert’s who needs to find a bride, or his mother will pull all financial resources from his father and their Scottish land. Persephone Jones has everything she wants, independence and a job she loves. She begins to suspect her life is in danger and finds the idea of male protection necessary. When the path of these two crosses, they find they can help each other. Coll in finding a bride, and Persephone protection.
Although this story did not find its way to even a top ten for me and it is not my favorite of the series that I have read, it did not make me cringe while reading it. Admittedly, historical romances are not my favorite backdrop, but I do not mind them from time to time and I like a Scottish highlander. Persephone can stick up for herself and she is not a push over. Coll respects her and does not treat her like an unintelligent woman. There is not much of a slow burn here, lust plays a big part in their coming together and they do not deny that for long. The rigid society that surrounds them hinders their relationship, but they overcome it. Coll and Persephone make a good pair and there is a sweetness to them. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys historical romance.
If you are a huge fan of this “Wild Wicked Highlanders” series like I am, then you too will be so excited to finally get Coll’s story. I do have to say that this book was definitely worth waiting for, the author did an amazing job at developing a storyline that not only had incredible depth but was also fast paced. Getting to learn about new characters and getting to see a new side of characters we already love just made this story even better, and of course the romance like always was out of this world, completely swoon worthy. I highly recommend this book to all readers, especially fans of romance.
This is the third book in the Wild Wicked Highlanders series, but the first I read. I had not problem enjoying this story, but will go back and read the first two. There are a few spoilers for them in this one, but there are three brothers and the first two are their romances. Coll MacTaggert is the oldest of the brothers and has the title, Viscount Glendarril. His mother returned to London when he was twelve, but she and her husband agreed that the boys would marry British Women. Coll is the only one not spoken for, and everyone is getting worried. If he does not get married before his younger sister, he will be disinherited. Coll finds a woman that interests him, but she is not a "Lady". Persephone Jones is an actress, a common woman as far as his mother is concerned. The other roadblock is Persephone herself. She is hiding something and has no desire for that secret to come out. When she starts to be the victim of "accidents" Coll appoints himself her protector and they get to know each other much better.
Coll & Persephone were great main characters. Their connection is perfect and I love that they are intelligent and not what you expect. They are both stubborn and what they want is opposite each other, but their connection is strong. I wanted them to sort things out and get together because I thought they were perfect together. This book has a lot to it: mystery, suspense, surprises, romance, heat, heroic actions & a strong female main character! It was an intriguing historical romance, showing how the Highlanders were willing to match up with the English Sassenachs for money to keep their clans alive, healthy and able to work and farm their land. I like how family and clanship is strong and always important, they will do what they need to do to protect those they care about. The characters are well-developed with interesting detail and are so likable, I would love to meet them again in other books. I enjoyed this Highlander romance and recommend it to those of you who enjoy a hot, highland romance with action, adventure and even a bit of a mystery.
This entire series is totally swoon worthy and I particularly enjoyed Coll and Persephone's book. I have really enjoyed getting to know the brothers and the dynamic with their estranged mother. Overall, the story moves at a good pace and has just enough drama and intrigue to keep the reader interested without seeming over the top. Persephone is strong and resilient and while Coll is a bit of a grump, they are a perfect match. If you like historical romance, I think this series will be a good fit.
This was so much fun!!! I love Suzanne Enoch’s writing, especially when she writes highlanders. This story was really steamy and I loved seeing Coll and Persephone fall in love. I really loved how strong Persephone was and she didn’t let anyone tell her what to do with her life. Particularly when her past was catching up. Both characters had a lot of depth which was really interesting to read about. I also thought the family aspect was so fun especially the bond with the brothers!
Interesting and great story.
I liked the flow and the characters. There was a great amount of conflict and interest to keep page turning.
Attractive title and cover.
Recommend.
This is book 3 in the Wild Wicked Highlanders series.
Viscount Glendarril Coll MacTaggert is a Scottish Highlander whose estranged English mother is requiring her three sons to marry an English woman before their youngest sister weds, or she will cut off funds to run their Scottish manor. With his two youngest brothers wed and/or betrothed to English ladies, and his sister's wedding only 4 weeks away, Coll has run out of options in stalling his mother's demands. But he's determined that he will find his own wife.
Then he meets Persephone Jones. He finds Persephone to be smart, beautiful, independent and mysterious. Unfortunately, Persephone has absolutely no desire to marry. Then someone tries to kill Persephone and Coll decides that he needs to protect her while trying to solve the mystery of who is trying to kill her. As they hunt for clues to discover who is after Persephone they begin to fall in love with a little bit of lust.
I really enjoyed the character of Persephone because I prefer when the main female character is smart and independent. Coll was also a refreshingly enlightened and viewed Persephone as his equal. He listened to her and I believe that their ability to communicate was one of the really great things about their romance.
I was provided a copy of this book by NetGalley for an honest review.
Well hello, Sexy Scotsman. How could you not love one of Suzanne Enoch's Scots?
Love this book. I've read the rest of the series and don't plan to miss any future installments.
This series follows the MacTaggert family. Angus, Earl of Adriss, married Lady Francesca Oswell. Together they had three sons and helped to make the Adriss lands prosper. However, Lady Adriss left Scotland after the birth of their fourth child, a daughter. Vowing never to return to Scotland, Francesca plans to raise her daughter, Eloise, as a proper English lady. She leaves behind her three sons Coll, Aden, and Niall to be raised by her stubborn Scottish husband. For seventeen years the three sons had not seen or spoken to their mother or their sister, assuming that they had been abandoned. However, when their sister Eloise announces her engagement, an old agreement is brought to light. Francesca will continue to fund Adriss as long as her three sons marry proper English women and must do so before their sister. With a deadline now in place and a community dependent on the Adriss lands, Coll, Aden, and Niall race down to London and agree to the terms set out for them with the hidden agenda of causing the most trouble for their mother as possible. However, each brother is thrown by additional unexpected circumstances and sees them helping strong women in need of their particular assistance.
Another very funny, passionate book in this series! These books are such fun. The banter is entertaining and there's a solid suspense plot, with stakes that feel real. The characters' connection was believable and enjoyable.
If you’re unfamiliar with Suzanne Enoch’s writing, I find that her Highlander Romance are much more rougher than her Regency Romances. I guess that’s to be expected since we’re talking about Highlanders here.
But I found that this book was a little slow for me. I wasn’t fully engaged in Coll’s character and therefore, it took me a while to get through this book. Some parts were slow and other times I wished that there was more going on. It’s definitely not a bad book, but perhaps I was just expecting more. Nevertheless, I wish that Enoch infused this series with a bit more humor like she does with her other series. Even if you have a burly Highlander, it was her charming characters that made me come back for more.
Ohhh does this trilogy have to be over?! This was another novel written by Suzanne Enoch that I absolutely adored. Strong heroines and even stronger heroes...swoonworthy! Coll and Persephone are perfectly spicy together. I recommend this book and the whole trilogy to everyone! If you aren't into romance novels, you will be after this trilogy.
An intelligent heroine who has no need for an overbearing man. Count me in. Good writing, interesting characters, and a great end to the series.
I have really enjoyed these brothers! The connection between Coll and Persephone was wonderful, I love seeing the soft side of Coll that Persephone pulled out of him. Add in attempted murder, and Coll as a protector, and I was hooked. It was also fun to see the other couples from the previous books! These characters are so much fun to read about and I was definitely invested in their HEA!
The ending finally arrives with the final MacTaggert brother falling madly in love with another inappropriate woman in order to rock not only the household but all of London! I have really been looking forward to this conclusion of the series for a while now, knowing that Ms. Enoch would not disappoint us with Coll’s story, but I really was blown away. Coll has had it with his mother’s machinations and scheming to get him wedded, despite him knowing that he needs to find a wife as soon as possible. After watching his brothers truly find their matches, he longs to find something similar for himself, even though he won’t admit it to himself much less his family. Intent on escaping her latest scheme, Coll finds himself backstage at the theater and stumbles across the most coveted actress of the moment, but she is so much more than he or anyone else knows. Persephone has made her way in the London theaters for several years, becoming one of the most coveted actresses, but she is suddenly in danger from an unseen enemy and is willing to make a deal with the sexy and dangerous-to-her-heart Scot. Coming together in a pact, Coll and Persephone begin to get to know one another and soon the relationship has run away from them both despite them resisting it. Coll wants to keep her and Persephone loves the big brute, but doesn’t ever want any man to control her or force her to give up what she loves. They have to trust in their new love and find a compromise, before the enemy makes his final play and the choice is taken out of their hands—permanently. Coll was a great character to get to know because he was just so complicated, despite wanting the most basic of things for his future. He is a strong protector of those under his care, he is passionate, sweet, and loving in even the smallest of ways, but he is also a determined and stubborn Scot to the core, refusing to give up on what he wants and needs to his happiness or others’. I enjoyed watching him running in circles as he got to know more and more about Persephone, learning her secretes, and coming to the conclusion that she was the perfect mate for him. Persephone was definitely a woman before her time, independent, opinionated, sexually free (to the point she could be), brave and willing to sacrifice for those she loved and the career she wanted for herself. She gave up a lot to be the woman she wanted to be and pursue the future she wanted, and after meeting and falling in love with Coll she will do it again. Getting to know her was a true experience and I liked her from the beginning and only liked her more by the end. There was no lack of fire between Coll and his Persephone from the moment they met until the very end and it was undeniable that the passion burned hot in them both individually and together. I loved reading this exciting conclusion to another great Enoch series and cannot wait for the next one, seriously, this woman amazes me with her ability to just blow my mind while still make me wish I lived in the time and world of these noble, sensual, strong and brave Scots. Another Enoch masterwork.
While I'll admit that as always Suzanne Enoch has provided a sweet, funny romance between two people extremely well suited to each other, I'm afraid I can't rate Hit Me With Your Best Scot higher than a two star experience. Every time I pick up one of her books I hope that she'll have chosen to undermine some of her subgenre's less pleasant foibles, but she never quite gets there.
The Scottish romance subgenre has a lot of growing to do if it hopes to ever escape the "big, brawny Highlander" (taken verbatim from the back cover copy of this book) brought to his knees by tiny English lady who is his cultural superior trope. It's not attractive. It's just a bad stereotype applied to Scottish heroes who are all but fetishized by the subgenre as burly, moody, highly sexual and uncivilized brutes. This is one of those things where maybe once upon a time you couldn't see it - but now you can't unsee it. And while I still let it pass in older romances, it's not something I enjoy seeing perpetuated in the modern genre.
I do thing, in defense of Enoch's abilities as a writer, that she was trying to at least dialogue with these issues in Hit Me With Your Best Scot. There are a number of moments when Coll, the hero, actually takes these tropes (which are as frequently applied to him by the contemporary Londoners around him as by the narrative itself) and weaponizes them against those around him to his own benefit, playing "the uncivilized Highlander" when it suits him. But I don't think the book went far enough to interrogate its own inherent bias. Coll may be adept at using people's perceptions of him against them, but at the same time he is still presented to the reader as a gruff, rough and tumble, with a disdain for the London men because they aren't as "manly" as he is. Hello normative gender roles, for one. I believe that an author as talented as Enoch can work her way around these issues - I just need her to try a little harder.
Hit Me With Your Best Scot was my first pick as part of the "Historical Romance Read A Thon" hosted by Lisa, Lacey, and Jessica on YouTube. And my historical romance reading of late has definitely been lacking this year, 2021 has NOT been the year of reading historical romance and I definitely needed this read a thon to push me into reading this genre way more. I also received this as an ARC but never got around to actually reading it until now. Now I did alternate reading this from the audiobook and the ebook. I wasn't a huge fan of the narrator to be honest, I am not sure exactly what it was that bothered me, but the narration just wasn't my favorite and I ended up switching to the ebook format.
This story begins with our two main characters, our hero, Coll MacTaggert, who is the oldest of his siblings and the last one to marry. He knows that he must marry within the month or he and his brothers will have to forfeit their inheritance. But when he sees a woman that catches his eye, he wants her passionately and especially in knowing it would upset his parents in seeing his pair up with an actress for a wife. So he makes a bargain with her, and at first their relationship is one where its a business proposition but chemistry between them is hot and their is something deeper that builds between the two and what begins as business soon turns into both revealing secrets of the heart and soul and learning to fight for each other, no matter what the cost may be. But when strange occurrences start to happen to Persephone, Coll's protective instincts go into overdrive and he will do anything to protect the woman he loves, and also increase in his determination to keep her for a lifetime.
Hit Me With Your Best Scot was quite a fun historical romp and I had a blast in seeing what this author delivered. Now I will be honest this isn't my favorite work from this author, but I found it quite diverging in many respects. The pacing of the plot could be slow going at times but I did find that it increased as you delve deeper within the story. The humor of the dialogue definitely had the "Suzanne Enoch" stamp on it and she definitely portrayed her normal flair which I found quite entertaining and so many moments that I was highly amused. I really found this pairing to be quite unique. It's not common to see a highland noble and a famous actress find a HEA together, but somehow Enoch found a way to bring them their well-deserved ending, and the climax of bringing all the pieces together was blended in such a way that brings the reader to a culmination of satisfaction.
I was quite drawn to both of these characters and their relationship developed on a deeper level pretty quickly, but more quickly than I actually expected. We see them really unify in their feelings for each other earlier in the story and I found that spect more refreshing than having it all drawn out until the very end. The side characters of the family were quite the "cherry on the top" of the desert. We see how much flair of drama they bring to the table and I quite enjoyed seeing their contributions to the story and see our old favorites enter into the story. The siblings really gather together in this book and unify and I really loved seeing that aspect here. And also a small side story of the parents reconciling together which I wasn't expecting to see happen.
Overall I found Hit Me With Your Best Scot to be an adventurous, witty, and unique plot point to deliver a satisfying read of a romance and with some unexpected growths along the way. A story you definitely need to take advantage of and buckle up for the ride.
