This was an enjoyable and insightful read to explain to a young audience why masks are important and the benefit to oneself and to others when wearing the mask. Definitely helped my toddler understand the importance in wearing their mask.
This is a cute way for kids to learn about why they need to wear a mask and that it's not scary to wear one.
We Wear Masks showcases the different types of masks that people wear for a variety of reasons. Some reasons people wear masks include painting, scuba diving, theater, and more. The book introduces students to the need for masks to keep others safe especially during the time of the coronavirus pandemic. Additionally, it teaches to care for others as we wear masks to keep ourselves and others safe. This book is an important in the time of the current pandemic and can help young children feel comfortable with wearing a mask themselves.
We Wear Masks is a simple picture book that shows all of the different reasons that people wear masks – protection from fumes and dust, air when flying or diving, performances, etc. The point, which is explained about half-way through, is that masks are not hard to wear and they have a variety of uses. This picture book works as a way to normalize the idea of wearing masks. As it blatantly explains at the end of the book, wearing a mask means that you care about the people around you.
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* Really awesome kids book, wearing masks is normal in many ways and in many cultures, its good to teach kids about masks!
An entertaining read on different professions and characters who wear masks. A very topical book with an engaging theme and vibrant illustrations.
Timely story about the importance of using masks. Masks are portrayed throughout the story and demonstrate how we can protect ourselves and our love ones by following this important health measure.
There is no need to emphasize how timely this book is to children who not yet fully aware of the subtle laws of the human body, are facing a strange reality of people wearing masks, talking about some covid virus, and seeing all their favorite indoor places close down one after another. This book normalizes mask-wearing and adds an additional layer of importance to them. We wear masks because we care about each other. I found it an encouraging story, well-written prose, and engaging illustrations.
Really enjoyed how the author related our new reality of wearing masks with others who have always had to wear one suitable for their job. Feel that kids will understand it and if not, they can always ask. Rhyming text will also lend to kids paying attention to the story throughout. Good book for the younger kids as those 2 years old and above must wear them as well as adults.
I received an advanced reader copy from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.
Timely and helpful for starting positive conversations about mask wearing! As a bonus, children will get introduced to some fascinating new careers. With colorful illustrations, rhyming text, and diverse representation, this is a book I’ll buy for my nieces and nephews.
This was a very cute and appropriate story for young children that do not understand why we have to were masks with the pandemic. I love how the story tells of all the ways masks were worn before the pandemic. This is definitely a book I would get for our library at school and for my grandkids at home. The illustrations fit perfect for the story. The author did very good with getting kids to relate to why we wear masks. Loved it!!!
I think normalizing masks for kids is going to important going forward, as they do reduce the risks associated with the pandemic. As a parent of a young child, I think this book endeavors to do that in a really wonderful way.
I loved that there were illustrations of the various ways people have and do use masks for reasons other than Covid-19 - like welding, scuba diving, or ranching, it is presented in a really uplifting way throughout - we wear masks to protect ourselves and others - it is a kindness where we look out for each other, and all the other reasons people wear masks - for fun, for art, to play.
The simple rhyming scheme will make it easy for young kids and early readers to follow along (and in some cases remember some of the lines). I love the diversity and inclusion on every page, with lovely colourful illustrations. I also liked that she included clear window masks for lip reading. It's clearly made with intention and has a solid and consistent message.
Also great: Our 4 year old liked it too
I was so thrilled to see this book! It has been so difficult to explain/normalize something that should never have been normalized in the first place. I think, as unfortunate as it is, it's essential that our children gain access to relatable material that helps them digest the unparalleled times we are in. To have a book that seemed to focus around masking wearing was exactly what I was looking for.
So, imagine my surprise when the masks we currently wear, to protect lessen our risk with COVID-19 transmission, weren't mentioned until the end of the book! The opening forward page states, "Wearing a mask is about caring for others", specifically opens with a line about COVID-19, and goes on to say that the author is normalizing mask-wearing by showing children people who wear masks in their day-to-day lives. I was fully expecting the book to start with masks relevant to coronavirus. But instead, it opened with a mural artist using spray paint. The mask they wear is for themselves. It is not for others. Next up? Ranchers who wear bandanas to keep flies out of their mouths. After that? A pilot wearing a mask for "a breath of fresh air" for themselves. Do you see where I'm going with this? Almost all of the masks were ones people were wearing just for themselves. COVID-19 relevant masks weren't mentioned until the end of the story.
To my child and I, it did very little to 'normalize' mask-wearing in the way we are experiencing it now. I think the book could've benefitted from opening with the masks our kids wear. Touching on the uncertainty of it all. Acknowledging how nervous it may make some kids. And then go on to show how masks are used in so many careers and situations, and they're all beneficial. Heck, they could've included the mask my dentist has always worn to protect my mouth from his germs. The masks surgeons wear to keep us safe during surgeries. Just a tiny bit more display of masks that are worn to protect OTHERS would have done a world of help.
Why did I still give this book a 4-star rating? As of yet, there are few books that depict children wearing masks. No matter how irrelevant majority of the book was, my kid smiled seeing the little kid on a scooter with a face mask pretending to be a superhero. If only the book had started with that instead of ended with it.
This book teaches kids about masks of all kinds and shows them that, especially now, wearing a mask shows that you care for others. During this pandemic, we wear masks to keep other people safe from our germs, but all sorts of people wear masks everyday, from doctors and cowboys, to welders and actors.
This book normalizes mask wearing and introduces it as a normal part of many people’s lives and shows that it’s now a part of all of our lives, at least for the near future. I loved the message, obviously, but I also loved the art and the creative ways Lesage teaches little ones about masks and their uses.
It comes out on November 24th, just in time for the busy holidays when, hopefully, everyone will be wearing their masks.
I am absolutely here for every book I can get my hands on that helps my little girl understand the importance of wearing her mask! To me it is really helping her understand what's happening and reinforces what we tell her when she has to wear one when she'd rather not! Thank you for the relatable story, I know we'll be reading this one to her over and over in the coming months!
I am so glad I found this book! I will definitely be getting a hard copy of it. It’s so hard for kids to understand a pandemic and why they can’t see anyone’s faces, but this book normalizes it, and shows kids that it’s not just them that wears masks. I love how it showed in clear artwork that others wear masks for different and fun reasons. I wish I had this book 6 months ago!
I read this book with my 3 and 5 year old daughters. While we had already discussed being "ninjas" as part of the allure of wearing masks, having this book go over several occupations and hobbies that use masks was so much fun. We talked about what each person does and how the mask is an important part of their job or protection. Knowing the WHY behind these things and relating masks to things children understand makes the long days of wearing masks to protect others more manageable.
This is perfect way to teach kids age 3-6 about the current events especially mask wearing. The illustrations and easy to understand rhyming words make it entertaining too. I appreciate how the author doesn’t lecture why we need to wear masks but just the process of why we should care for each other as human beings. Truly a great book for zoom classes to kinder to 2nd grade.
As an educator, I thought this book was very accessible to children and helped illustrate the importance of wearing masks.
This short, rhyming picture book for ages 3 - 5 sends the message that "Wearing a mask is about caring for others."
Each two page spread features a rhyming couplet describing who is wearing a mask, and why they are wearing it. The art is engaging, colourful, and stylish. The diversity and uniqueness of the characters will peak children's curiosity and keep them turning pages. The book features an artist painting a mural, ranchers riding horses, a pilot flying upside down, scuba divers, a scientific researcher, doctors, and more. Plenty of children are pictured wearing masks, and the idea of customizing your mask to make it your own is a fun addition.
This would be a great choice for a kindergarten read-a-loud at the beginning of the school year.
