During this time of pandemic this is a great story to help explain to children the need for masks and why we wear them. The author shows people in all walks of life wearing masks and they go about their daily life. It even shows how wearing a mask can cause some people difficulty hearing what is being said to them. It isn't a very long book but it packs a punch with it's information.
This is a book about people who wear masks and the reason why. It was a cute book but I only gave it 3 stars because it did not get to the reason why we now wear masks until the last page. If I were trying to explain to my two young daughters why we wear masks this would not be the book I go to.
This book was given to me an an ARC from the publisher through NetGalley in an exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.
I loved the premise of this book for children. However, after reading, I don't think it would keep childrens' attention. Children identify with more "real life" people in their lives (e.g., teachers, nurses/doctors--provided in book, policemen, firemen, neighbors, parents at work). I thought it would focus more on keeping others safe and the reasons behind it (relevant to what we are currently dealing with during pandemic).

This was adorable and so timely. I love the focus on how wearing a mask demonstrates caring. The way masks were normalized was also excellent. Perfect for little kids; right now.
Thank you NetGalley and Marla Lesage for this adorable peek into all the masks. As a mother of 2 littles I know how hard it can be to get them to wear their masks because of the pandemic. My 2 know how important they are and encourage their friends to wear theirs as well. My 4 year old said her favorite in the story was the mask with a window. She has a friend at school with one because her mom reads her lips. Thank you for shedding light on such an important topic in today’s world.
A fun rhyming picture book to show kids the amazing people out there in the world who already had to wear masks for all sorts of reasons.... waaaaaaay before a pandemic ever came along. Some pretty cool masks fill these pages. Maybe it will inspire the kids of our world that masks are good things!
Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with a free copy in return for an honest opinion.
A book for anyone who needs to keep reminding their young charges why we need to wear a mask by highlighting all the other activities one can't do without a mask. Helps kids to make the connection that wearing a mask is just as important for safety as the protective gear that adults use in their jobs. A book about a much-needed topic that is definitely going to be a big hit.
Beautifully illustrated, this book depicts people in different walks of life who wear masks. People like welders and scientists, who have always had to wear masks in the discourse of their duties. The book refers to the masks we wear since the global COVID pandemic at the end, and reminds us that wearing a mask is an act of care towards others.
A simple but well thought out message, which will help normalize mask wearing amongst toddlers and younger children.
I love this short, rhyming book for children ages 2-4. After explaining that masks are worn by super heroes and real life heros like nurses, the book shares that wearing a mask right now shows that we care about others. The book is just the right length for a young child. The illustrations are cute.
Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Cute story to encourage kids to wear masks. Everyone from doctors to super heroes wear them- why not you?! Little kids will relate to the mask wearers in this story and , if they get the right, cool, mask, will want to wear one, too! Loved the illustrations. Great book and relevant to our presaent world.
Marla Lesage's <em>We Wear Masks</em> is probably one of the most important books you could read to your children right now. Of course, this is the kind of book that probably won't be relevant far in future. But right now, with the current way the world is, it sends an incredibly important message that unfortunately a large number of adults still don't seem to understand.
<b>Masks in General</b>
The great thing about this book is that it highlights the usefulness of <em>all</em> masks, not just the ones that protect others from contracting COVID. Masks protect us in the hospital, on a ranch, in space, and underwater. And the truth is that a little bit of discomfort is worth the lives that could be saved and protected from wearing one. Not only do you learn new things from reading this book, but it sends such an incredibly important message.
<b>Beautiful</b>
The illustrations are also phenomenal. They're honestly perfect for engaging children in reading. But they are also just excellent pieces of art in general. And honestly, I just absolutely <em>adore</em> the look of this book. It is page to page with absolutely brilliant art, from beneath the ocean to high in outer space.
<b>A Wish</b>
I wish we lived in a world where people weren't selfish. I wish that this wasn't a controversial topic of discussion. And I wish that everyone had the critical thinking skills to recognize the truth about the usefulness of masks. Unfortunately, we don't. And so books like this one exist to help educate the world. Hopefully, our children will be a smarter generation than the one currently running things.

I have a preschooler and a toddler, and I teach first grade, so I've been looking for a quality picture book about mask-wearing for several months now. This is far and away the best I've seen!
The opening of this book is what sets it apart from other more hastily-written children's books about wearing masks. This book starts off by talking about masks/helmets/face coverings that people typically wear in various professions (pilots, scuba divers, etc.), then segues into showing how we wear masks in daily life now. This transition helps younger children make connections. Plus, the illustrations and rhymes are fun and engaging without being too cheesy!
We Wear Masks is a book about different types of people wearing masks and why they do it. For example, superheroes wear a disguise, ranchers keeping out flies, children in the snow keeping warm. The book is done in rhymes to help tell children in a fun way why it's important to wear a mask.
One thing I LOVED was the type of diversity that was shown. There is a page that shows children wearing masks with a clear window in the front so you can see the person's mouth moving. The children are both using sign language and one child has hearing aids in their ear. It's absolutely essential that children see themselves represented in books and even if you don't have a child that is hard of hearing I think this can be a great conversation starter about how everyone is different and how little things like a window in a mask can be super helpful. I also saw a woman wearing a hijab as well as a man in a wheelchair, more representation that is needed in the books we read.
This book would be great for explaining why we need to wear a mask right now, the book doesn't talk about Covid-19 except for the front and back but it is not part of the story. This would be a helpful tool for a teacher that has students coming back to the classroom. I think this book can even be used after things recover from the virus. When talking about the different body systems and how your body protects you from getting sick you could use this book as an example of a way we can protect ourselves along with washing our hands, etc.
I definitely recommend it!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an electronic copy to read and review.
I was hoping for more from this book, but overall it was an okay read. I liked the little rhymes, but it was pretty difficult to read as they didn't always flow the way I felt they should. I would also like a book that talks about wearing a mask to protect people who can't. It would be nice if we could include the norm that there are people who are unable to wear a mask and that is okay and how to handle those situations.
I liked how this book showcased careers and people who wear masks all the time. I liked how it showed different masks that people can wear now as we are all wearing masks. I think this is a good read for younger ones who aren't totally understanding why we are all wearing masks now. This is a much needed book for our times.
Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for this ARC!
This is an excellent book to get kids used to the hopefully temporary work we live in now, where masks are necessary to venture out into the outside world.
Told very simply, with lots of pre-covid examples, the author shows why people have always worn masks for certain things, so it isn't that bad to wear them now to keep safe.
<blockquote>When I wear a mask and you wear one too,
We're both reallky saying "I care about you."</blockquote>
I would like to think that this book will have a short shelf life, and all this will be over soon, but somehow think not. So in the meantime, here is a good book to explain it all to them.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
This is a nice, short and sweet little book! I love how it normalized wearing masks, even when not in times of a pandemic. Job well done!
This is such a sweet book with a very important message that shows the importance of wearing masks and shows the people who wear masks every day, whether it is for work (welders, scientists), hobbies (scuba divers, artists), and now us as we go about our daily lives to show our care for the people around us.
The pictures are beautiful and the rhyming scheme makes it really fun to read.
This book covers lots of people and places in which masks are useful or required. It goes into describing the importance of wearing a mask in the implied time of COVID-19. Very sweet illustrations and a great message.
Thanks for the opportunity to review this book. Building off the covid 19 induced mask mandates, this book is about all the reasons why people wear masks, such as nurses and artists. It’s a nicely illustrated book. Hoping it gets published soon as to not lose its poignancy!
