Whisper Island is a fast paced thriller that will keep you guessing as to who killing the friends off one by one by one.
The author lets you get to know the 4 girls before they leave for the island and you think well things might not go well but how bad can it be.
Riley, Mia, Sammy, Scarlett, Rob and Opal have all gone to Whisper Island in Alaska for the summer. The house looks nothing like the photos.
You can feel tension among the friends.
I love a closed room mystery , only so many suspects. I thought suspiciously of all of them at one point.
It is indeed a book that you say to yourself just One More Chapter ; you want to know who is the evil culprit.
Thanks to NetGalley, Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter for a thrill of a read.
I was so excited to read Whisper Island from the description, and it exceeded my expectations ! Whisper Island follows four friends, from all of their POVs, as they travel to a secluded island to disconnect, escape their problems, and ostensibly work on their various artistic endeavors. The first night, one of the friends is murdered and the paranoia sets in...
The writing is excellent. The author has a gift for descriptive language. Although it is a modern setting, the atmosphere is very gothic. I would definitely recommend this to thriller fans!

Watch Me.
Friends, Mia, Scarlett, Sammy, and Riley are off to Whisper Island where they will concentrate on their artwork and enjoy some time away from it all. But they are not alone, Sammy's brother Rob and his new girlfriend, Opal are there. Which makes things uncomfortable for some. So much for a girl's time away.
Then one of them is found dead. But that is only the beginning. They are alone on the island, aren't they? Is someone else there? Who would want to hurt them? What secrets do some of them have? Apparently, they have a few, causing them to wonder who can be trusted.
This is pure escapism reading. The characters are trapped on an island. Soon there are more deaths and suspicion. It has the how-well-do-you-know-your-friends- vibe. This book is a quick fun read which does not take much thought. That is not a bad thing at all. I loved that I could just sit back and enjoy the book. Each of the characters have their own POV. This is where we learn more about each and gain some insight.
Will you see the ending coming? Will you be shocked? I enjoyed how the reveal came about. Nothing was rushed or dragged out. It had the perfect aha moment. If you are looking for a fun fast read this might fit the bill for you. Yes, there are deaths but there is nothing graphic and we are told about them rather than reading every detail of them.
There was one thing that annoyed me about how they were invited to the island, but overall, I enjoyed this fast read.
I received a copy of this book from Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
I’m always up for a suspenseful book, aren’t you? Whisper Island by Carissa Ann Lynch is a real page-turner about art students, each with their own distinct talents, who head to an island in Alaska for a getaway but soon after they get there, things start to go wrong. Whisper Island is in the middle of nowhere which is always the ideal setting for twisty suspense!
A quick read, this earns a spot on this outstanding books coming in 2021!
For friends Riley, Sam, Mia and Scarlett, their trip to Whisper Island was meant to be a once in a lifetime adventure – just four young women, with everything to live for…
But as soon as they arrive, things go wrong. First there is the unexpected arrival of Sammy’s drug addict brother and his girlfriend Opal – why are they here?
And then the deaths begin. As the dream trip quickly turns into a nightmare, suspicion is high. Are they really alone on the island? Or is there a killer hiding in the shadows?
And as each of the girls reveals a dark secret of their own, perhaps the truth is the killer is closer than they think…just a whisper away…
One of my favorite tropes is the Agatha Christie-style of books like And Then There Were None, and this book is that style. If you’re a fan, you will want to read Whisper Island too.
Coming on February 5.
This book had me hooked from the start! I loved that each chapter was from a different character's perspective, and we soon got to see that they were all hiding something. I thought the setting, while being a little predictable, was great - an island that turns out to be creepier than they had expected. This kept me up late, just wanting to know what was going to happen next! I found this to be a quick & gripping read.
An entertaining read written from the perspectives of each of the occupants who escaped their own secrets to summer on Whisper Island in Alaska. Unfortunately...one of them is a killer and the others are doomed to die...
Even after reading the book, I’m still puzzled by the first chapter. Nothing at the end of the book made me feel like it was necessary or even added anything to the story itself. I would have preferred either not having it or having a better tie-in. That being said, I enjoyed the book. It was suspenseful and kept me guessing throughout. It was the type of story that you think you know who is responsible, but there are enough twists and turns to keep you from saying definitely who did it.
Four friends embark on what was supposed to be a girls vacation to take time away from everything and to focus on their art. Riley, Scarlett, Sammy, and Mia are in college together and after going viral for making a puzzle together combining their art they decide to take a break from it all and to take time to focus just on their art. So in the most opportune moment they are able to secure a great getaway for rent free but like most things they start off on a bumpy trail when Sammy's brother Rob and his girlfriend are brought along for the trip causing some animosity between a few of the girls.
Then, something happens to the boat which was their only way off the island. So when things get bad things start to get worse when people start dying. Now they have to figure out if one of them is the murderer or if there is someone else on the island. When the villain is revealed everything makes sense and usually I am able to put it together on whodunnit but this one was a bit of a surprise!
Now this story is told from different perspectives of the girls and I enjoyed getting into each one of their thoughts. Overall I enjoyed this book! The storyline and plot kept my interest and was a rather quick read once I started it!
This one is a great horror/thriller mix up with the young adult drama mixed in. I enjoyed it. The only thing I wish is there was more of a background of all four of the girls.
I really wanted to like this one but it just fell flat. This whole concept is amazing but the execution just wasn’t for me. The prologue really threw me off and I just didn’t get immediately invested the way I want to be with a book like this.
The chapters of this fast paced, captivating thriller were voiced from the perspectives of each member of the stories diverse cast of main characters. Scarlett,Mia,Riley,Sammy, her brother Rob and his girlfriend Opal, each individual had their own unique personality and character traits and five of them were harbouring secrets and hiding various emotions, thoughts and feelings behind masks of trustworthiness and camaraderie. There was individuals I liked, some I changed my opinions on as the story unfolded and some who I thought were unlikable for various reasons. Even before the girl's arrived on mysterious Whisper Island, a sense of foreboding permeated the pages, the reader couldn't escape the feeling that the girl's friendships were not as close or as strong as they appeared to be on the surface. That the undercurrents of mistrust and tension were likely to build and explode like lightening bolts across the sky once the girl's were isolated on the island. add Rob,his girlfriend and a mysterious, vicious killer into the mix and you have all the ingredients for a not so enjoyable stay in paradise. But who is the killer? What is the motive behind their crimes and will any of the group survive and find a way to escape the island?
I love a thriller that has a sinister, isolated setting and a classic murder mystery vibe permeating the story. I loved Whisper Island with it's mysterious past, gothic mansion built within the trees, eerie atmosphere and strange noises in the night. Were the sounds just the wind blowing through the trees or was it the killer coming to claim their latest victim?
This is a extremely well written, fast paced, unputdownable, thrill ride which is written in short, snappy chapters that give the reader a very bad case of just one more chapter syndrome. The twists and turns of the plot keep you guessing and glued to your kindle. I would love to watch a film or tv mini series adaptation of this intense thriller. Worth all the stars and more and very very highly recommended.
I received an advance reader’s copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is one of the better thrillers I had read more on time. You grow so fond of the characters, even the killer. One of the more unique subplots. Beyond five star
The story: Art students Riley, Scarlett, Sammy and Mia arrive at the gloomy Whisper Island, off the coast of freezing Alaska, for a three month getaway. Each has skeletons hidden away in their closet that the others don’t know about. When Sammy’s brother – and Mia’s ex – shows up with his new girlfriend, the population of the island jumps to 6. Sparks fly and personalities clash, but after a few nights the boat, their only way to the mainland, is sabotaged, and one by one , they start to die. It becomes clear to those remaining that a killer is with them on the island – or among them.
Pros: Structurally, Whisper Island is sound. Each chapter is divided into several subchapters, with each of the four girls narrating one from their perspective, piecing the story together. The language is accessible, making for an easy read. Alongside the main story we also have a good portion of world-building, with context for every character and the dramas and connections between them.
Cons: For a mystery novel inspired by Agatha Christie – whom it references – Whisper Islands doesn’t do a very good job building that very mystery. The characters refer to their secrets too directly, outright mentioning their “big secret” but without revealing it. But building suspense is like telling a joke – if you have to spell it out like that, then you’re not doing a very good job.
Recommendation: Murder mysteries are almost always exciting – who is the killer? Why are they doing it? How will it end? Our curiosity edges us forward. Whisper Island did just that for me, despite a few hiccups.
Four college girlfriends set off on a trip to a remote Alaskan island to work on their artistic endeavors. But this is no Bachelorettes in Paradise and things turn deadly very quickly as one is murdered in the forest. What's the motive and who are the intended victims? Told from alternating points of view, the novel focuses on sins and secrets of the past as we see flawed and unlikable characters attempt to run from the truth. Its creepy but what thrill ride isn't? I raced through this one!
From the outset - and the references to her suggest this was intentional - Whisper Island reminded me of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. The remote island setting, a group thrown together, mysterious deaths and secrets. While it might not have quite lived up to that book, it was definitely a good read.
Our focus is a group of fairly unlikeable friends. We can see immediately that they each have secrets and are using this trip to Whisper Island to escape something. The lack of detail here was necessary, and though it was frustrating to not really get beneath the surface of these characters it was important for the story that we didn’t know too much too soon.
Once the group arrive on this run-down island it’s obvious that this isn’t quite the luxury idyll they had been expecting. The discovery of a skull and then some gruesome deaths had this teetering close to the edge of credible. The behaviour of the group once they start to get picked off is meant to show their rising fear, but it was rather more reminiscent of every over-the-top horror movie known.
While I didn’t feel that concerned by the events of the book, it was clear that those involved were more affected by things than they initially let on. As with most of these scenarios, things may have been different if people took responsibility for their actions. The story wouldn’t have been as much fun though!
Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read this prior to publication. I’m looking forward to recommending this to some of my students.
Okay, yet another book about an island, and this one had me hooked from the get-go.
This book has multiple points of view, mostly between four friends Sammy, Mia, Scarlett, and Riley - but we also get little glimpses into the heads of Sammy's brother and his girlfriend, Opal.
The book starts out innocent enough, four friends decided to spend their summer break on an island in Alaska, focusing on their art and just getting away.
But each person has a secret. The question is, whose secret is out to hurt the rest of the group?
I could not put this book down. I had to know what each of the girls' secrets was, and I had to know what on earth was going on with the island. There is so much going on in this book and it's all SO GOOD. It's a quick read that keeps you coming back for more, and a fun mystery to get immersed in.
If you're looking for something a little creepy for the new year, this one is for you!
Yes, I have work in the morning. Yes, it is late. Yes, my eyesight is getting blurry, but I refuse to go to bed until I know, the outcome of this story...
Aah, Whisper Island (love the title) is mysterious and ominous to the very end. It is remarkably good.
Thank you to NetGalley for an early review copy.
This was a quick and fun read- I finished it over a period of a few hours. It centers on 4 friends who take a trip to a remote island in Alaska together in order to take a break from stuff going on in their respective lives as well as concentrate on their art. Riley, Scarlett, Sammy, and Mia are all in art college together and jump at the opportunity to get away on a free trip. Things almost immediately go astray, with Sammy's brother Rob and his girlfriend Opal showing up, and something happening to the boat that was their only connection to the mainland. Things get creepy and then people start dying- is the murderer one of them or an unknown assailant o n the island?
The book alternates between the perspective of the 4 girls, all in the first person. I admit that I occasionally forgot whose chapter I was on, as all of them had similar thoughts. I couldn't get a grasp on how old they were supposed to be- they were all in college but at least one of them had a late start, and we know Sammy's brother Rob was "almost 30" and was 3 years older than she was; I am guessing they were in their mid 20s but wish some attention would have been paid to the fact that they weren't traditional college-aged students, if only to avoid the distraction of trying to figure it out. I also wish there was a little more backstory to develop the characterization that would have differentiated them from each other a bit more.
The mystery of the story was well done and I thought that the villain's intentions made sense Looking back, I am surprised I didn't figure out what was going on, but I didn't and was surprised when it was revealed, and I thought it tied everything together successfully.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and thought it was a quick and fun read. It read a little bit like a young adult novel to me, maybe due to the age and lack of differentiation between characters, but the mystery and reveal was sound, and the story was creepy and kept me guessing. I actually bought another Carissa Ann Lynch book right after I finished it. Overall, I'd recommend the book who like "locked room" type mysteries. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Compulsively readable, dark, twisty, and absolutely FUN. Couldn't put this one down once I started it.
Six young adults depart to Whisper Island to do their "thing in artwork". One of the
the group knows that they will make it back - but only that one person will survive (so they think).
The characters are young and impressionable and tend to act (and think) on impulse. This, as I may expect, for that age group. Yet, not always in the smartest way...
With multiple narrators, the reader is given a quality insight as to the psyche of the group. Also excellent character depiction.
The reader may figure out too soon who may survive...
As an educator, I believe that high school students and those early in college will enjoy this read immensely!
Many Thanks to HarperCollins, UK, One More Chapter & NetGalley for a fast and interesting read!
Six of us are going to the island. Only one of us will make it back.
That one of us will be ME!
First I mast say that the synopsis of the book just hooked me and I was very intrigued. I am very pleased that it didn't disappoint me and remind me of my favorite old movies such as "I know what you did last summer" and "scream". It just put me in that mood..
I can't say that this is the best book that I had read this year and it's kind of predictable, especially the final confrontation was kind of silly.
But still it was very enjoyable like watching the '90s slasher teen movies like I mentioned before, which we hate and in the same time love.
It was very easy read and i found easy to follow the concept of the book and specially i like that it was writing from the points of view of all characters. It gave you the opportunity to see all more globally.
Thank you to the publisher, the author and to the NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC for exchange of my honest opinion.
Definitely recommending this book!!
