This is a locked-room mystery, very popular at the moment. This one has a well-written 'Pretty Little Liars' friendship dynamic which is the perfect suspense building tool. Multi viewpoints let the reader learn character secrets as the story progresses, and the level of menace intensifies. Most characters are not what they seem, providing plenty of false leads in this murder mystery.
I received a copy of this book from One More Chapter via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Friends Riley, Sam, Mia and Scarlett decide to take a trip to the remote "Whisper Island". It will be a once in a lifetime adventure to get away from all their problems and secrets and work on their art. But once they arrive on the island, they are surprised by Sammy's drug addict brother and his girlfriend. Soon after strange things start to take place and then suddenly one of them ends up dead. Six of them went to the island, but only one of them will make it back.
"Welcome to Whisper Island, I think you're going to love it here."
I'm not gonna lie, I needed some time to fully get into this book. It starts off a bit slow, but once the girls make it to the island and the deaths start, it really sucked me in and I finished it pretty quickly. It was a fun, whodunit, locked-room mystery. The short chapters just made me go "I'll just read one more" constantly. Reading this book was basically like being a witness in a slasher movie, so I really enjoyed it!
I loved the setting and creepy atmosphere of the book, with the remote island including a spooky old mansion and other eerie buildings. What I also loved was the way the friendship between the girls was written out. On the surface it seemed strong and they all seemed close, but throughout the book it becomes pretty clear that tension and mistrust is hidden underneath the surface, ready to explode. This definitely added that little extra or me, because the whole "how well do you really know your friends"-vibe intrigues me.
"Elena Blackwater was the first to die. Many more will follow."
There are a lot of POV's in this book, but I didn't get confused once. I feel like the book needed them to make it more fast paced. These multiple POV's also make it so that as the book progresses, you find out more and more about each of the characters. And of course, by the end, every secret is revealed. I wouldn't say I was surprised by the "big reveal" at the end, but I definitely didn't see it coming from the start. I started to suspect while reading, but it didn't take away from the mystery or enjoyment for me. I'm not a big fan of the actual ending, though, but I didn't hate it either.
This was the first book I've read by this author, but I will definitely be checking out more of her work. I love her writing style!
Thank you to Netgalley, Carissa Ann Lynch, HarperCollins UK and One More Chapter for providing me an e-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
“Watch me."

Oh, WHISPER ISLAND. I had so many hopes and dreams for you. You had everything I ever wanted in a thriller: a gorgeous cover, a mysterious premise and an Agatha Christie style locked-door mystery. Unfortunately, this book still fell flat.
I can see how WHISPER ISLAND would appeal to a YA audience, however, as an avid adult and YA thriller reader, I was able to suss out the culprit - and the reason - fairly quickly. The characters had little to no depth and I kept on having to go back to the beginning of the chapter to double check who was "speaking." I also felt the whole premise of going to a remote island to work on their art a bit flimsy...especially with the social media buzz that initially led them to the idea of working together...but maybe that's just me.
I think I just struggled to suspend my disbelief with this one - there were far too many eye rolling moments for me to be fully immersed in it. That said, I think that younger readers who are unfamiliar with locked door mysteries/thrillers would enjoy this.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for my ARC!
Woah!! Guys this is how it’s done. This book is twisty and turny. Its so engrossing that I read it in one sitting. I neglected the shops and errands I was suppose to do and read this instead. It was so worth it. This is my favorite book of 2021 so far. It’s so brilliant.
It’s told from the main 4 characters POV, with an odd chapter from the other characters. These college girls are stressed out and they decide to go on a 3 month summer vacation to a remote island with me cellular service, no boys and focus on their art. Everyone in this group has their own personal reasons for needing a break, they are all terrible people and they’ve all done terrible things.
Is the killer in the group of girls? Or is there someone else on the island? I loved every second of this one. Carissa Ann Lynch novels always have me on the end of my seat. She is brilliant and this one doesn’t disappoint.
Enjoyed this one. I felt like there was something missing though, something I needed to love it. Well thought out plot and easy to read.
Gritty thriller with lots of twists and turns. Characters were varied and not very likeable which made it a struggle to read.
Wow! Whisper Island is such a fun read perfect for the YA horror fan! There is a solid locked-room murder mystery at the center of the plot. Think And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. The characters are intriguing. The suspense never lets up. Highly recommended to YA mystery/horror fans.
4 Stars!
This book is a super fun read! College artists going to a deserted island for the summer to work on their art, add a Friday the 13th vibe and BAM! You have yourself glued in place reading into the wee hours of the night.
I loved the shift in perspectives to all of the characters. I loved the college girl drama. I feel some of the delivery of the things that were occurring lacked build up and emotion from the characters. However, the more I contemplate this and think of it from a Friday the 13th type lense, the more fun it is and the more it makes sense.
I look forward to checking out the rest of the authors collection, for sure.
A special thanks to NetGalley, HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter, and Carissa Ann Lynch for providing me with an ARC.
This was an unexpected thrill! I have never read a book by this author but I am now intrigued. Four friends decide to getaway, each for their own secret reasons, to an island in Alaska. One of the girls brother, Rob and his new girlfriend Opal, also decide to join them much to the dismay of the others. But that is the least of their problems. Soon, a mysterious human skull is found that frightens everyone. Is there someone else on the island? A killer perhaps? What I liked most about this book was that each chapter gave the perspective of each character. And never have I read a book that has SIX unreliable narrators AND the possibility of someone else unknown. It was a true mystery/whodunnit. I loved the twists. There were several but the last one, oh the author did very well on that one. Definitely a good read!
Thanks to the publisher for my ARC approval and copy.
The premise of this book is what I love to read, locked room mysteries, a bunch of friends together with different personalities going on a getaway. While the characters did sometimes annoy me a bit, I did enjoy this thriller. I also loved the setting of Alaska! Looking forward to more from this author!
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author, for an ARC of this book, in exhange for an honest review.
I read "My Sister Is Missing" by Carissa Ann Lynch last year and really enjoyed it so I requested a copy of her new book, "Whisper Island".
The premise of the book sounded fascinating-
"Six of us are going to the island.
Only one of us will make it back.
That one of us will be me."
I am happy to say that this book exceeded my expectations and I am blown away how amazing it was.
It definitely is one of my favorite books of 2021.
It was well written, exciting, addictive and creepy.
I loved the ending and I could see it being made into a movie.
I will be reading anything that Carissa Ann Lynch decides to write.
While I felt this could have used a bit more development in plot, characters, and setting, it was still a fun, quick read about a group of friends who suddenly decide to travel to a remote Alaskan island for three months. There's no grocery stores, not really any cell service, just some ramshackle buildings and someone who wants to kill them.
With short chapters and a breakneck pace, this is a quick read if you're looking for something short and suspenseful.
An interesting read, however I have a pet hate of books where I have to read accounts from everyone's point of view.
I tried to get into this one, but I just couldn't. I usually love this author's books, so I'm not sure where the disconnect was but it just wasn't for me. She is INCREDIBLY talented, so I will still read her others and I think you should too!
Four college girls decide to go to Whisper Island for an adventure "once in a lifetime" they say. But as usual things don't go as planned and even more unsurprising they all have secrets. What starts out as an interesting story becomes highly predictable with even more unlikeable characters. Sorry not my favorite.
This read started off very well and continued at that incredibly high standard throughout. Alaska is a captivating canvas, so remote, inhospitable, shrouded in mystery. The characters were well written, Rob was especially unlikable, as was Lynch's intention no doubt. The story was shrouded in mystery from the off with characters omitting information that they'd prefer to keep to themselves, for one reason or another. Suspense increased ten fold when we learned what had happened to the boat. The story was atmospheric from start to finish. It was almost other worldly, cut off from the mainland and from society as we know it. I highly recommend this mystery.
What can go wrong on a secluded island of the coast of Alaska?
Well... apparently plenty.
This story is haunting, disturbing, and enthralling.
You’ll be guessing all the way until the end.
Whisper Island by Carissa Ann Lynch is a mystery thriller about a group of college friends who plan a trip to an isolated island in Alaska. Riley, Mia, Sammy, and Scarlett all have their own secrets and reasons to escape to the island, away from their lives back home. Originally a peaceful trip turned into a nightmare. Strange things starts to happen and one of them turns up dead. Is there someone else on the island with them? Can they trust one another?
The story is fast-paced and an easy, entertaining read. The characters were well-written, and I liked how the narration was told through multiple perspectives. However, the author poorly executes the plot twists and red herrings. The big reveal was quite predictable and left much more to be desired.
Thank you to Netgalley, author Carissa Ann Lynch, and publisher HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter, for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
A group of college friends, four female artists, take a trip to an isolated island to spend months creating together. But it isn't long before they start realizing that their retreat has led them right into a trap, and into the path of a murderer.
This is definitely a suspenseful book. I am always excited about a plot involving an isolated location where a group is trapped with an unknown murderer, and that horror aspect is definitely amped up here with lots of quick short chapters, a small group of characters, run down buildings and mysteriously locked spaces. Once the book got going, it really got going, and I couldn't stop reading.
Chapters switch back and forth between different characters' points of view, and this could get a little confusing. The story also took a while to get started for me, with a lot of exposition. Things felt a little repetitive sometimes in the beginning, when each character would reference their own sort of mysterious secret or mysterious difficult situation multiple times in a similar way.
This was a quick, suspenseful read that kept me turning pages, but it definitely wasn't the best version I've read of this type of plot.
Chilling! Be very careful who you befriend. And be very careful about who you meet online.
The book starts simply, a story of friendship. Four woman meet at art college and decide to celebrate the end of the year by spending the holiday together making art. Through a friend of a friend they are offered a free holiday on an island in Alaska. It is too good an opportunity to turn down, as we learn that each person has a good reason for wanting to get away from it all.
I cannot share spoilers, but I can share this. Nothing is as it seems and a sinister wind blows through the Island as clues are revealed.
An unputdownable whodunnit and a great read!
