I'm always drawn to books with similar plots to Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, but unfortunately Whisper Island disappointed me.
The beginning was quite good, I was interested in the group of female friends all from an art school who decide to go on a vacation in an isolated island to focus on their work. The book alternated the point of views of all the characters and the chapters were short, so it was an easy and fast read overall.
However, the mystery was very underwhelming. The identity of the murderer was extremely easy to guess, so the plot became boring for me very soon. Also, the pace was not so good: the first half, which introduced the characters and the setting, was very slow, and the second half, when the killings began, seemed very rushed.
Sadly, this book didn't work for me.
This author is a favorite for mystery/thrillers and this book didn’t disappoint. A group of friends basically stranded on an island in Alaska just screams “creepy” - and CAL delivered. Then unexplained things start to happen and there’s no way off the island. I figured out a few things, but there was enough mystery to keep me hanging on until the end!
What a dark, twisted ride this read was. I loved the characters and the plot was very well done. The atmosphere was actually haunting and it had suspense in spades. I didn’t want to put this one down. It was fast paced and kept you guessing till the very end, the horrifying dark end. I highly recommend this read.
The only reason it lost a star for me was I found some of the detail to be lacking as far as background / utilities of the island and it bugged me a bit. And some of the actions of the characters behaviour at times was really implausible. ( eg no one left alone, two seconds later an injured character is left alone in the house) small details that didn’t affect me overall enjoyment but did nag at me a little bit.
Six college friends decide to take a once in a lifetime trip to a secluded island in Alaska. Once they have arrived at Whisper Island, they immediately regret their excitment.
Bad things start happening on the first day. A gruesome discovery makes them question if they are alone on the island after all.
What should have been a three month retreat, turns into 4 days of horror.
Whisper Island is a quick page turning thriller that doesn't stop. It reminded me a lot of the 90s teen horror movie, I Know What You Did Last Summer. When college coeds are stuck on an island, you know it won't end well.
Everyone on the island has a secret that are slowly revealed as the bodies start dropping. Suspicion turns to anxiety, pulling the reader into a game of finding the killer. It really plays out like a movie. Jennifer Love Hewitt could make a comeback with this book!
I enjoyed this book. Great body count, excellent motive and fitting end. Perfect thriller to mix in between heavy reads.
A great page turner that kept me guessing to the very end, I would highly recommend this book for anyone that is looking for a great thriller. The plot and characters are extremely well written.
This set of friends travel to a remote Alaskan island post pandemic, and all of them have their own story, and their own secrets. The pacing and multiple point POV of this one were SMART and kept the book moving along very quickly. While I was able to predict parts of the end, I didn't guess it all and that was exciting. Definitely worth a read if you like a mystery/thriller.
Friends escaping to an island with pasts that catch up to them. Standard plot and characters. Mystery loving patrons will read but not essential to the collection.
Whisper Island has one of my favorite mystery tropes: a locked room.
In this book, we get a group of friends heading off to an island for an isolated retreat with a few uninvited guests. We are introduced to most of the characters before they visit the island, so it's nice not to be overwhelmed by names or things you'll have to remember before the action starts. (Although for me the characters didn't differentiate a whole lot)
There's a great building of suspense, be it a bit slow. It was entertaining, easy to read, and pretty gripping.
I liked that the motive of the killer was understandable, but there are still some plot holes.
Overall, if you like Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None" , you'll like this.
Thank you to NetGalley and Carissa Ann Lynch for an advanced copy in return for my honest review. Whisper Island is available for purchase on February 5, 2021!
Scarlett, Sammy, and Mia have been friends for years and one day Scarlett invites Riley to join their group. All four girls have graduated from art school and are dealing with their own internal struggles, from drug addiction to trying to get out from under their famous parents shadow. The girls decide to spend the summer on a private island in Alaska in hopes of buckling down and working on their art. While on the island, strange things start happening and slowly people start going missing or wind up dead. Will the girls be able to figure out who is harming them before they are all victims?
This book had strong “And Then There Were None” by Agatha Christie vibes. Unfortunately for me, I wasn’t a fan of that classic – but Lynch does a good job of making it more modern and a bit more interesting. I will say that the ending threw me for a loop as I wasn’t expecting the culprit to be who they turned out to be but I also felt like it wasn’t a clean ending. Why the culprit did what they did was understandable but I wish I had more background on the reasoning. Overall, it was a fast read and a decent mystery.
A brilliant modern take on Agatha Christie classic And Then There Were None, this is the story of four friends who plan a three month artistic retreat on Whisper Island, with its gothic, secluded house, in Alaska.
The chapters are told from the viewpoints of the different friends, which adds to the drama and pace of the story - it is very interesting to see which details each of the friends focuses on and what they leave out. Each of the characters have flaws which come out bit by bit, and the stories cross over in a very unexpected way.
There are quite a few mystery books with this theme on the market at the moment, but this is the best one I’ve read in a while.
With thanks to NetGalley, HarperCollins UK and One More Chapter for an advance copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you so much for my advanced e-copy of Whisper Island.
I absolutely loved the ambience and spooky setting of this book. You know something is off - actually MANY things are off - and half of the fun is figuring out what. The unreliable narrators and the fact that everyone had a secret made this an especially intriguing read.
An area that was frustrating for me was the circumstances where each of these individuals agree to go to a remote island for 3 months. I'd understand a week, maybe even 2. but 3 months?! No cell phone service, no way to leave, no one thinking of these things? I did think it was explained, but the utter foolishness of these characters got to me.
I definitely struggled with the italic text throughout. I certainly liked knowing what the characters were thinking, but it was overdone to me. I also felt as if the big twist was predictable (but again, we knew everyone had a secret, so process of elimination).
Overall, I liked it. I was entertained, but not blown away.
Thanks to NetGalley and to the publisher for the ARC, which I received in exchange for my honest review. Whisper Island is the story of a group of female college students who travel to the remote Whisper Island in order to escape the problems in their lives and focus on their artwork. I am usually very drawn to locked room mysteries set in remote but picturesque locations, but this one fell a little flat for me.
Most of the characters are annoying and they make such glaring bad decisions that it's no surprise when one by one they end up dead. I don't want to give away any more of the plot but I think that most mystery readers will be able to guess the culprit pretty early on.
The book has a solid premise and a beautiful setting but didn't quite live up to my expectations.
Thank you to Netgalley, Harper Collins and Carissa Ann Lynch for this ARC in return for my honest review. A modern day And Then There Were None. I was intrigued by this premise and really enjoyed the book. I look that it was told from multiple perspectives. The chapters are short and pacy which made for an easy read.
This was another fast-paced & twisty thriller from Carissa Ann Lynch that had me guessing (and second guessing!) from the first page to the last. It was dark and atmospheric and absolutely bingeable.
WHISPER ISLAND tells the story of six people who are all looking to escape the real world for a few months of artistic respite on a remote island in Alaska. Each of the people on the island has something to hide and no one is ready to share their secrets. In the lead up to their arrival on the island, Lynch gives each of the characters just enough depth to make us feel like we know who they are (and what they’re hiding) before turning everything upside down.
Based on my experience with this author’s past novels, I knew to make sure I started this one when I had nowhere else to be. I absolutely devoured it!
Thanks to One More Chapter for the advance reading copy.
Whisper Island is a fast paced closed circle mystery that will have you glued to the pages the entire time.
I am an avid closed circle mystery reader because it’s my favorite genre over all. So I’m always looking for the next best one and I’ve finally found it! Whisper Island is everything you could want in a closed circle mystery. Secrets, lies, and murder.
I love the format that this novel was written in. Carissa Ann Lynch did such a phenomenal job of giving each character their own voice. I immediately knew who’s point of view I was reading from without even having to read the name at the top of the next chapter. I felt a connection to every single character in this book.
The only thing I can complain about was the fact I knew who the killer was right of the bat. I will say at points I was doubting my judgement but in the end I was right. But the ending was so clever that I didn’t even care that I knew who the killer was.
Whisper Island is the next biggest hit in the closed circle mystery genre. Overall I loved this novel. The more I think about it the more I enjoy it. Every second I was reading it I felt like I was in a horror movie. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good who done it mystery.
5/5 Stars
Thank you to #harpercollins and #netgalley for a gifted copy in exchange for my honest review.
This book was provided free to me on Kindle for a review by Netgalley. It is similar to And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. Who is the murderer? A stranger? One of the group? It is easy to determine the mystery and ending in this one. However, a good read despite the language. Try it.
A deliciously fast paced page turner. A thriller that you cannot figure out what is going on and whodunit till it snaps you at the end. The characters aren't deep but why when almost all of them end up killed off? Enjoyable fun weekend read.
Friends Riley, Sam, Mia and Scarlett, set out on a trip to Whisper Island for an adventure. They'll have the entire remote Alaskan island to themselves. But as soon as they arrive things start to go wrong, with unexpected arrivals, frightening discoveries, and, later, death. As they try to get off the island, they begin to wonder if they're really as alone as they thought.
Whisper Island's slow burn beginning ramps up as the stakes rise. This is a fun take on the isolated location mystery. #mystery #psychologicalsuspense #WhisperIsland
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC. The opinions in this review are honest and my own.
I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't mind the many POVs in the book. Usually, I don't like books with more than two POVs. I feel like first the books felt more like a light mystery to me and I would have preferred it to stay that way. The sudden change in pace of the story was a little weird to me and didn't feel completely right. Also, I do think some things were quite predictable. However, I wasn't sure who actually did it until the end (maybe also because I was still hoping for a different outcome). But overall, I did enjoy the time I had with the book and would recommend it especially for people who are only just getting into reading thrillers.
I'm very sorry to say that I didn't like this book at all.
Although it was easy to guess what was coming next, it was also so far fetched that it became totally unbelievable.
The characters were shallow and irritating.
I was optimistic to start with but that faded away as I got further through the book. Such a shame.
