I'm not sure why this installment in a series featuring several young women didn't grab me but it didn't. Wesley, the Earl, needs money and wants to regain his family's land, which is now owned by Lady Aurora so he sets his charm on her, hoping that he can persuade her to marry him. Not so fast, buster! Mercy, who does not have money or position but who is a true friend to Aurora doesn't think much of him. Doesn't think much of him as a match for Aurora that is. These two run up against one another in a way that telegraphs the outcome, which is often ok by me but this time, well, it wasn't. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Wasn't for me but fans of the series might enjoy it.
Charming Wesley Renshaw, Earl of Castlewick, is immediately smitten with Miss Mercy Heath when he dances with her at a ball and her spectacles are broken. He maybe smitten with Mercy, but his duty lies in marrying her best friend Aurora. He promised his father on his death to acquire the rest of the original estate that now belongs to Aurora. Westley can't keep his eyes off Mercy or stay away when he's anywhere close to her. Moved by her music, her sweetness, her beauty, everything about her, Wesley must decide what's more important, his love for Mercy or his duty to his promise.
A breathtaking romance with a swoon-worthy Earl who brings a few tears to a romance.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
The story was the third in a series and I hadn’t read the other books. It would have been helpful to have read them. Now I think I will try to go back to read them. The heroine was very likable but she didn’t realize her own self worth. The hero wanted to fulfill a promise to his dying father, but love won him over in the end. It was a very engaging story with many minor characters that you could love or dislike.
Another gorgeous story in this series. Mercy is the wallflower with the least connections. She is a musical genius and a wonderful friend. Wesley needs to marry to gain some property. Once he meets Mercy he loses his heart. The wallflowers are delightful and do not disappoint in their quest to protect each other. The men they bring into their circle become a perfect part of their group. Enjoy the wit and candor as these ladies have fun with their friendship.
This is the third book in this series, but it can stand alone.
In this book, we get the story of penniless Mercedes Parsons and Wesley Renshaw - the Earl of Castlewick. It starts off with a very intriguing premise - he wants to marry Mercy's best friend, who happens to own the last property he needs to restore his ancestral lands - but it doesn't really deliver on the drama. I felt like there needed to be more - both to do with the property itself, and with Wesley's cousin Malcolm (who had great potential to be a terrific villain). In my opinion, the story is enjoyable but seems to fall flat when compared to the first two books.
Worth reading if you like to read all in a series, but I wouldn't go out of my way to purchase.
Wesley is determined to marry Aurora but Mercy is just as determined that it will never happen.
Wesley and Mercy make a perfect pair with their love of music.
A.S. Fenichel has written a winner.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The synopsis was rather misleading as there was hardly any discouragement or subterfuge going on. The added story of Wesley’s cousin Mal was unnecessary and in light of the molestation at the end, disgusting and enough that I dropped another star from this average novel.
I was provided with an ARC of this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Each book in this series gets better, and each is completely different in tone. This love story is smooth and easy and comfortable. There were some bumps in the road but nothing insurmountable. Both leads allowed themselves to fall in love, and it was beautiful to read.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
The love story of the Earl and commoner was a formula that has been played so many times. The plot was tired and the conclusion predictable
Capturing the Earl (The Wallflowers of West Lane, #3 by A.S. Fenichel
Each book in this series is better than the last one. This book can be read as a stand alone, but I strongly suggest you read them all. This story is about Mercedes Parsons (Mercy) and Wesley Renshaw (The Earl of Castlewick "Wes"). Mercy Wants to save the widowed Wallflower of West Lane, Lady Aurora Radcliff, undertake another perilous trip to the altar. There is lots of laughter, tears, angst, mean people, adventure, music, good friends and steam all to get us to a very HEA. I do hope the remaining Wallflower will get her own story.
Reasons I enjoyed this book:
Easy-to-read Entertaining Funny Great world building Happily Ever After Informative Page-turner Romantic Steamy Tear-jerker Wonderful characters
I liked the first book, loved the second book and enjoyed this third book too. :) It's not as dramatic as the other books. This is more mellow compared to the other two. I did enjoy the romance that started since book 2. :) You don't need to read the other 2 books to understand it and it can be read as standalone. It is just more fun if you have read the other books. I also love the friendship among the female characters and how loyal they are to each other. A great fun overall. Looking forward to reading more in the series...
This books is the third in the Wallflowers of Westland series. Mercy has resigned herself to being a spinster, but she thought she would grow old with fellow Wallflower Aurora. Mercy was not prepared, however, for Wesley, a man she may have begun to like, to begin courting her friend. Aurora, a widow, holds lands that used to belong to Wesley’s family and he sees marrying her as the solution, but he can’t help but he drawn to Mercy instead
Unfortunately, this book was not a hit for me. I did not read the first two books in the series and I believe that negatively impacted my impression of this book—if you read the first two books and enjoyed them then this book may be a win for you, but I don’t think it succeeds as a stand-alone.
We jump right in with Mercy being very awkward and rude to Wesley and it’s unclear WHY. I wish there’d been more build up instead of jumping into this scene. The story continues to feel unpolished and I had a hard time getting into the writing. The dialogue doesn’t flow naturally and some of the character interactions are simply unbelievable, even with accounting for historical vs contemporary differences.
I ended up not finishing this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This book was ok. Something about the writing felt freshman to me and was distracting. I’d like to read more from the author to see if it’s an issue of this particular book, or if my tastes just don’t gel with the author. I may re-visit later and adjust my rating, but for now it’s 2 stars.
This is the third book in the Wallflowers of West Lane series and I have liked them all. The sequels have not quite lived up to the first, but they’ve all been enjoyable. I feel like the plot of this one fell a little flat as it just did not have the same mystery and intrigue I’ve come to expect from the series. I did enjoy the characters although the chemistry sometimes felt forced. This is my least favorite of the series so far but it wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t particularly remarkable either. I hope we get Aurora’s story next and if so, I can’t wait to read it.
Thank you NetGalley, author and publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is exactly what I look for in a regency era romance. I loved how the romance built between Wesley and Mercy throughout the novel as Wesley realized his feelings for Mercy and Mercy realized her value.
This book is a conundrum to me. It felt like there was a whole depth of relationship that didn’t exist. I kept thinking to myself that Mercy and Wesley had known each other for years, but no. It was mere weeks/months. So kudos to the author for being able to portray that. It takes a special writing talent for me to believe a relationship built on such a short period of time when I typically hate (hate!) insta-love/quick relationships.
The highlight for me was the friendship that exists between Aurora, Faith, Mercy and Poppy. I also appreciate that the characters stated they felt an instant connection, rather than instant love. That’s a major turn-off for me in a book. I felt like the bit with the cousin was a bit too much and could have been handled differently, but it didn’t completely destroy the whole reading experience. This was the first book I’ve read by Fenichel and I am satisfied enough to want to check out her other works.
Title: Capturing the Earl
Author: A.S. Fenichel
Genre: Romance
Rating: 4 out of 5
After the demise of her friend's disastrous marriage, Mercedes Parsons isn't about to let the widowed Wallflower of West Lane, Lady Aurora Radcliff, undertake another perilous trip to the altar. At least, not before the bridegroom-to-be is thoroughly investigated. If only Mercy could stop her uncharacteristic daydreaming about Wesley Renshaw's charm, his intellect, his dashing good looks. After all, the earl has already set his sights on her best friend! She must keep her wits about her and avoid giving into temptation.
Wesley is both irritated and intrigued by the machinations of Mercy—He cannot let her cleverness and beauty distract him. He needs to marry her friend, Aurora, so he can reclaim his family's ancestral home. A wrong he has hoped to right his entire life. Besides, who is penniless spinster Mercedes Parsons to decide whom he can and cannot marry? Yet while he admires her unwavering loyalty to her friends, he decides it's high time the misguided woman had a dose of her own medicine. Two can play at this spying game. But they are both embarked on a dangerous charade. And it won’t be merely Mercy's reputation at risk—or her heart on the line—as Wesley comes to the inescapable conclusion that he has found the right woman at exactly the wrong time.
I really enjoy The Wallflowers of West Lane series! Solid writing and vibrant characters who are always up for an adventure make these books fun to read. Mercy is probably my favorite one of the Wallflowers so far, and I loved how she went from being passive to standing up for herself in the course of this book. This is a fun read good for some laughs.
A.S. Fenichel lives in Missouri. Capturing the Earl is her newest novel.

** spoiler alert ** 3.5 stars for the newest book in this series. Mercy wants to help her friend Aurora thwart Wesley’s plans to marry Aurora since she never wants to marry again. Wesley is really attracted to Mercy, but is courting Aurora to marry her and reclaim a property Aurora owns that once belonged to his family.
The romance is very enjoyable. The ending of this book falls apart for me. The book hints there is a reason Wesley’s cousin is determined Wesley get the family property back. I really thought there was a mystery there and instead the whole plot seems to just fizzle out. Then Malcolm’s “test” of Mercy is not surprising, but his immediate contrition is.
Thanks to the publisher for a review copy via NetGalley.
Capturing the Earl is book three in the Wallflowers of West Lane series by A. S. Fenichel. These stories revolve around the lives of four women who have been close friends since their school days. This book is about Mercedes Heath referred to as Mercy. She finds herself longing for a man she can never have and envious of one of her best friends. Wesley Renshaw must marry one of Mercy’s friends in order to reclaim lost property. But what happens when he finds himself drawn to Mercy instead of the right Wallflower? I enjoyed the book. I thought there were just enough twists and turns in the plot to keep the pace interesting. There are a number of steamy scenes. Overall I liked Mercy’s character. I found her lack of self-esteem annoying at times. This wasn’t my favorite book in the series, but still very well written.
"Capturing the Earl" by A.S. Fenichel
This is truly a fun read. I laughed and I cried just as a good story should make you feel what the characters feel. This story can be read and enjoyed as a stand alone but I bet you will want to read the other stories once you have read this story. Yes, I did thoroughly enjoy my time within this story, and as in all good stories. I hated for it to end. I especially enjoyed the use of the hat-pin. This is a worthy Read. Happy Reading ! !
