In all honesty, I wasn't sure I would like this story because the main theme is greed. However, Adele Parks has a way with words and she turned a topic that would normally turn me off into one I devoured. Just My Luck is a read filled with angst, greed, and some suspense. There was more to the story than what appears in the blurb and I was all for it! This is a fantastic novel, one I read in one sitting! I recommend it.
Adele Parks is one of my favorite psychological thriller writers and Just My Luck was a fun and interesting story. I never trust people who say ‘it’s not going to change my life, I’m still going to work tomorrow’ when they hit the lotto jackpot. There should be law that they have to give it back. What happens to the lives of a group of devoted, loving and entwined friends who win in a pool? Or don’t win, depending who you believe. The same way that family turns against each other over money, this group takes the cake. Trust. It’s all you have in a pool. Trust is all you have when you have unreliable narrators with various versions in a domestic noir that grabs you and hold your attention to the very last page when you discover the truth.
Thank you #Netgalley for the advanced copy!
Wow this book really kept my attention, finished within 48hrs! So many lies, twists and turns amongst all of the main characters. So many twists shocked me and I did not see them coming. You would have thought winning the lottery would make like easier, not harder!
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. Lexi, Jake, Jennifer, Frank, Carla and Patrick have all been best friends for 15 years with a Saturday night dinner club. They have also been playing the lottery together, with the same numbers for 15 years until on Saturday night when two couples decide enough is a enough and pull out. The next week, Lexi and Jake play the same numbers and win 17 million pounds. They can't believe their luck until trouble creeps from their so-called friends. This book was ok. It drug quite a bit. #justmyluck #adeleparks #apr2021
Adele Parks brings her signature mystery/thriller style to her newest novel, "Just My Luck." This book centers around a few main characters: Lexi, her daughter Emily, and a few others. When Lexi and her husband win almost $20 million dollars in the lottery, they have to decide how to best spend the money. But Lexi quickly learns that her family doesn't agree with her philanthropic desires. This book shows just how far greed will take some people. It took me a long time to really become interested in this book and then I had a hard time staying focused.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
Loved it!!! Honestly I was really impressed by the writing and how the characters really came to life in this book. Excellent read!
Makes you wonder what you would do if you won the lottery. And the way it makes people change.
This was well written, with such a great
combination of characters.
Had me going till the end.
Great solid read.
Thanks to the Author, the publisher and NetGalley for an early release of this book.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Just my Luck begins with a couple winning the lottery -- the lottery that they and their friends had played together every week for 15 years. There's greed, betrayal, and relationships gone awry.
I liked this book - I liked the story and the way it was told from several points of view. I thought it was a little bogged down in some parts, and it was kind of predictable. But, when I wasn't super mad at the greed on display, I enjoyed the story.
a great mystery read, the characters were great and I really enjoyed trying to solve the mystery. I look forward to more from the author.
This is the dilemma everyone wishes for. You just won 17 million dollars. Do you split it with friends who up to 2 weeks ago contributed.
I enjoyed the drama of the win. I enjoyed some characters more than others.
It was the concept of the story that kept me going .
Lexi is a combination of many characteristics: sweetness, naivete, and frustrating. Her willingness to overlook Jake and his propensity to overspending combined with always wanting more whether it be financially or physically can be hard to read. And her response to Emily and the incident? However, I must admit that I was shocked by the ending and the twists I took. Who contributed? Leave it up to the reader to find out 😊
Lexie lives in a small village outside of London and works at Citizens Advice Bureau, where she fights for the underdog. When she learns she bought a winning lottery ticket, she wants to give a chunk of it away to help others. But her husband and teenage children have other ideas and are eager to spend the winnings. Tensions rise when their former best friends demand a “fair share” of the proceeds. Until last week, they had chipped in for fifteen years to play the lottery together. This layered story drew me in and had me eagerly turning the pages. And the ending! Brilliant writing and plotting! You’ve got to read this book. Thanks to NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Be careful what you wish for. Anticipation is often better than the real thing. Three couples have been good friends for years and get together quite often at each others houses. They all have been chipping in to play the lottery for a long time and always play the same numbers. Week after week they keep losing . Until one day their numbers actually came up and they win big or did they? Lexi is the one that purchases the ticket and keeps it for the group. When Lexi and Jake realized they won they were ecstatic. They couldn't wait to claim their winnings. When the rest of their group came to claim their portion of the winnings from Lexi and Jake, Jake said the winnings were all Lexi's and his since the rest of the group pulled out of playing the lottery with them last week. Like the saying says: money is the root of all evil and things took a very evil turn after this. Secrets are revealed and everyone had something to hide. I really could not put this book down and when I did have to I couldn't stop thinking about it! I literally had a dream about what I thought was going on. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. book because I definitely was caught by surprise with the twist at the end. It was mind blowing.
This domestic thriller has lots of twists and turns. This is a story of jealousy, greed, secrets and betrayals and what people will do when there’s a significant amount of money on the line. For fifteen years, Lexi and Jake have played the same six numbers with their friends Carla and Patrick and Jennifer and Fred. They have been close friends since their children were young and get together most weekends to eat and do the lottery syndicate. Over these meals, they have talked about many important things in their lives: kids, marriages, houses and jobs. One Saturday night, there is an argument in the group, and then six numbers come up on the lottery that are about to change everything for these six friends. Lies will be told, lives destroyed and friendships ended.
Just My Luck by Adele Parks was a quick and fun read, although it does get a little dark in places. It makes you think about what you would do if you won the lottery. Most people, regardless if they play the lottery or not, have dreamed about winning and what they would do with their winnings. It’s told from multiple points of view. I was pulled into the story very quickly. There are a lot of horrible characters in this book, so I guess the saying is true: “Money does bring out the worst in people”. I would definitely recommend reading this. You won't want to put it down.
I received this Ebook from Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion and review. I wasn’t sure how I was going to like this book, especially with how slow it started. The story redeemed itself at the end. It was exciting and made me want to finish it in one sitting. There was a lot of drama involved in this story, which makes it a good read.
Great read! Who hasn’t dreamed about winning the mega millions!?!? Without a doubt everyone has, so when I read the description for Just My Luck, I couldn’t wait to dive in! The storyline was meticulously planned out and filled with characters you will love to hate! This mystery/thriller kept me on my toes with well placed twists and turns that I NEVER saw coming—love that! Having never read Adele Parks prior to Just My Luck, I absolutely cannot wait to read more from her in the future!
Just My Luck by Adele Parks is a fascinating look at what happens when a couple wins the lottery, after breaking with the group of friends who they have played the lottery with for 15 years. Jake and Lexi had been best friends with two other couples since the moms met in a prenatal class when pregnant with their now 15 year old children. They became close and over the course of the years spend almost every Saturday evening together having dinner and drinks. The children were best friends too, Until one weekend when two of the couples decided to pull out of the lottery draw...and the next weekend Jake and Lexi won.
What happens next is what you expect, the other two couple fight for a piece of the prize initially, but then back off. Jake goes crazy spending money, but Lexi, who works with the impoverished in London wants to do some good with the money and tries to rein Jake in. But everything is spiralling out of control...what extremes will people go through to get a piece of the pot?
The author does an amazing job of disclosing the faults and foibles of her characters and the ending was something I never expected, what an incredible plot twist! Thank you to the author, Harlequin and NetGalley for an ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
You know that game you play where you ask someone what they would do if they won a million dollars?
Well, what if it were almost 18 million? The problem is that Lexi and Jake have bet the lottery with some friends forever but due to a disagreement they purchased this ticket by themselves.
As you might imagine the absolute worst of human behavior is on full display in no time when the friends feel entitled to share the win. It's juicy and engrossing.
Adele Parks hits it out of the park again with this one!
Thank you to HARLEQUIN – Trade Publishing (U.S. & Canada) MIRA for giving me a widget. It was my pleasure to write an honest review.
