I really love this series! The setting of a pet-friendly town is so fun. Wagtail is one of my favorite fictional towns; I would love to vacation there. Most of the characters, both human and fur, are entertaining and likable. The mystery is intriguing with well-placed red herrings and a multitude of suspects; I didn’t figure out whodunit it until the big reveal. I recommend this book to pet lovers, cozy mystery fans, and fans of the series.
All thoughts and opinions are my own, and in no way have I been influenced by anyone.
One of my favorite cozy mystery settings is the pet wonderland in Wagtail, VA. Folks are gathering for the ‘There’s No Place Like Home’ fancy ball held by the WAG Ladies (rescue volunteers); a group of five very different women who’ve brought their pets along during their stay at the Sugar Maple Inn.
Holly Miller helps her grandmother, Oma, manage the beautiful Inn. They adore pets and have several of their own. Trixie, Holly’s rescue dog, has a keen nose for sniffing out dead people. Lo and behold, she finds a corpse washed up on the nearby beach. As the story moves at a brisk pace, I found there were so many suspects introduced that it was somewhat frustrating trying to keep track of who was who (I couldn’t) and which pet was theirs. A gruff, retired Judge has a prominent role in the murder mystery and his situation provides levity in the seriousness of the mystery! I had a niggling feeling I knew who the killer was and it turned out I was correct. All in all, this is a great story. I highly recommend this book to animal lovers! Enjoy trying the delicious recipes the author shares after the story.
I honestly reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Berkley Publishing. All opinions are my own. Thank you.
I love Wagtail and all of the characters, especially the four-legged ones. The town is always having special events and this time there is a pet adoption charity ball. The Sugar Maple Inn is hosting the WAG (Wagtail Animal Guardians) Ladies while they are in town to put on the charity ball. The ball is just as you would imagine with human and animal guests welcome and all dressed to the nines. I loved the descriptions of the guests' attire and the food for both humans and animals. Also, a dog is missing in town and a pet detective has been hired to find it. There is a murder, but there is also another mystery in this book. I was kept guessing about both mysteries until the end. I like how the characters have developed over the course of the series and hope that there will be many more books in this series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Holly and her furry best gal are helping the ladies of WAG get ready for a huge adoption gala. The judges pooch has gone missing and a pet detective is hired to find him. This story is light and breezy. Its easy to read and very intriguing. I love the characters. I read this book in one afternoon. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I definitely recommend this book
The seventh installment in the Paws and Claws mystery series. Holly Miller works at the pet friendly family inn in Wagtail Virginia where visitors bring their pets for pampering and a group has done just that. A group of wealthy guests are planning a charity ball for their pet rescue group WAG (Wagtail Animal Guardians) and as preparations are underway for the ball a pet detective (had no idea their really was such a thing) arrives in the pet friendly town and begin to ruffle the ladies feathers. He soon is found dead and Holly and her pet Jack Russell terrier Trixie are on the case. This is a good solid mystery and keeps you guessing as the clues unfold. This installment does not disappoint and looking forward to the next in the series.
I received this ARC via Netgalley, and Berkley Publishing, in return for an honest review. This is the seventh book in a series about Holly Miller and the pet friendly town of Wagtail, Virginia. Holly, as co-owner of the Sugar Maple Inn, has a front row seat to much of the town’s happenings. Her dog, Trixie, has a nose for murders and leads Holly into unexpected adventures.
When a pet detective is murdered on the eve of the Wagtail Animal Guardians (WAG) big charity ball, Holly realizes there are lots of suspects who either knew him or knew someone that was involved with him. Asked to help find the missing pet of a local dignitary, she encounters more than she bargained for and does her best not to be the next victim.
There are lots of characters in this story. Holly is an engaging story lead and it’s obvious that Ms. Davis has great affection for Wagtail and Holly.
I enjoyed this book. It does get a little slow in the middle but not enough to stop me from enjoying it. The mystery is interesting and convoluted. I like the characters, they're well rounded. I never suspected who the killer was. #BigLittleSpies #NetGalley
Reading this book is like visiting old friends. Every book in the series gets better and better, with this latest installment being no exception. Wagtail is a place of dreams, the characters and their relationships developed more and more each installment. The mystery was full of twists and turns, not giving anything away. A perfect read!
Holly Miller owns a pet friendly inn. In fact the whole town of Wagtail is extremely pet friendly. I have 3 dogs, but the fact that people take their pets with them everywhere, and the pets are all extremely well behaved, felt too fantastical for me.
A pet detective is murdered, and several guests at the inn, and several acquaintances of Holly's are the prime suspects. Getting to the reason for the murder took a lot of convoluted reasoning. It made sense in the end, but you have to go through a lot of other things to finally get to it. The sheered number of suspects made it hard to keep track of everyone and their secrets. The book started out slow for me, but picked up about half way through and then went to an exciting ending.
I received a free copy from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
I love all the Krista Davis books, and have read them all. I think its the ambiance - I want to visit each place (and boy would I love to live in Wagtail!) and eat all the food and bask in all of the "themes".
Wagtail has set itself up to be an extremely dog and cat friendly place. In this book, there is an animal rescue fundraiser happening, and, of course, a murder. I liked the mystery, and had multiple guesses as to what was going on as different clues were uncovered. I would have loved to see more of the cute shops and restaurants in town, but the gala itself was great, and the picture on the cover is accurate :)
My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an advance copy of Big Little Spies. I'll always be looking for more from Krista Davis!
Paws and Claws series is always fun. Krista Davis likes to keep you guessing. She didn’t disappoint in this one either. Holly and her crew are back at it again when someone turns up dead at the animal fundraiser!

I love visiting Wagtail and this book really made my visit special.
The mystery was well played out and I was left guessing until the end.
All the different animals made this story even more likable, and I can’t wait to visit with my friends again soon.

#Big Little Spies is a great addition to the Paws and Claws series. I enjoyed the story and as a dog lover I always love a visit to Wagtail! I have to admit to feeling behind it because I hadn't read any of the previous series books. That did not mean that I didn't enjoy it! Fascinating characters and creative sleuthing by humans and intriguing pets alike. Good read for a chilly afternoon.
I requested and received a free ebook copy from Berkley Publishing Group via NetGalley. Thank you!
A wonderful cozy mystery that kept me guessing. Holly and her dog Trixie (who is great at finding corpses) and her family and friends make for a well rounded group of characters. Interesting how the past has a way of never going away. First I've read in the series, but will not be my last. Would recommend.
I love a cozy mystery and really enjoyed reading this one. The mystery was interesting and the characters made me want to know more.
Back to Wagtail, Virginia for the Paws and Claws series. I love the town name. The pets names are too cute.
Holly and her dog Trixie are back. Trixie has a habit of sniffing out dead bodies.
Rich pet mom's are in town for animal fundraiser and pampering, when someone turns up dead.
Cute cozy mystery, keeps to guessing. A few surprises
Krista Davis always writes great cozy mysteries. While the genre is predictable, she kept me guessing as to the murderer/ vandal and revealed just enough information to make the reveal pay off. Holly and her crew are a lovable cast of characters, so it is always nice to join them for a mystery in Wagtail.
