This book puts the true meaning to a "slow burn." The premise of the plot was interesting: adopted girl with DID accused of murdering her birth mother, but there were just so many unnecessary details added throughout every aspect of this book. We don't need three pages devoted to discussing the cake the characters are eating. We don't need to get told about Annie's belt buckles and denim outfits each time she shows up in a chapter. By the epilogue I couldn't take it anymore and just skimmed through it for the sake of finally finishing this book.
Was really good but also predictable. Will continue to try DJ Palmer. If you haven’t read anything by them yet give them a try.
Wow! D.J. Palmer is one of my favorite writers because he has the ability to incorporate many issues such as mental illness and addiction in a family thriller all while keeping the perpetrator a complete secret. I really thought that I knew who the bad guy was but I was very, very wrong. One of Palmer’s best…….but they all are.
5 out of 5 stars
Thank you to NetGalley as well as the author/publisher for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my unbiased and honest review.
Now that is a psychological thriller! What a ride! I was guessing until the very end. There is a lot of dealing with mental illness and I found it interesting to read and the courtroom drama was crazy. I never saw the twist at the ending and it had my jaw dropping. A very entertaining read.
This was a good suspenseful read that takes your through a families battle to set things right. The ultimate reveal was a shocker. I did learn a lot about a medical disorder.
Such a fun, twisty ride. This book is more of a mystery than a thriller but I was intrigued with every turn of the page. Throughout the story the reader is trying to discover whether Penny actually has DID and if so, whether she committed a murder. I was surprised by the ending and as a seasoned thriller reader, was unable to guess the twists.
I loved the discussions on the controversial diagnosis of DID. I also loved the determination and love that Grace had for Penny. The writing style was very accessible and flowed very well.
I am excited to pick up more books by this author.
I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher to read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
It was okay. Different from what I normally read. I would probably pick up another book by this author just to see if I really do like the author’s books or not.
The Perfect Daughter is a fascinating, fast-paced mystery about Penny, a 17 year old with dissociative identity disorder (DID) who has been arrested for a grisly murder. The crime happens at the beginning of the story and the rest of the book puts the pieces together as to what has happened and the process of Penny's arrest and what follows. The story is told in multiple perspectives and short chapters, which really propelled the story. I had no idea where this story would go and I felt invested in the characters. I listened to the audiobook, which is expertly narrated by January LaVoy and Dan Bittner.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC. All thoughts are my own.
This is the first book I have read by this author. I will definitely read more. The writing was very believable and suspenseful.
Penny Francone, age sixteen, is a murderer. She is found in the victim’s apartment, covered in blood, holding the murder weapon. The jury needs to decide where Penny will serve out her sentence and will she be found not guilty by reason of insanity.
Penny has multiple personalities. Or does she ? This book contains murder, secrets, mystery and history.
It keeps the reader guessing until the end.
I don't usually read thrillers, but I was intrigued by the premise of this one. The Perfect Daughter is a somewhat slow-paced but suspenseful read about a girl suffering from Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) who is accused of murder. Palmer does a great job of creating believable characters and building tension throughout the story. Thanks to NetGalley for the review copy.
Loves this book , dark and well written . I will be downloading book books my this author .I could not put the book it had been intrigued from the first chapter , the characters were written to perfection.
ehhh this one just wasn't for me. I don't like using mental health as a reason for doing something bad.
Another great book by this author. I have read all of this authors books. Lots of suspense kept reader wondering who done it up until the end.
This one had me on the edge of my seat and I could not put it down. Any free moment I had to read that is what I did. I tried to play out the twists and turns in my mind and I was shook when the truth came out. I definitely plan to read more by this author!
Fantastic book! DJ Palmer just keeps getting better and better! Could not stop reading. This is his beat book yet!
When Grace Falcone is confronted by police asking about her daughter, Penny, she is confused. Penny has been arrested for the murder of Rachel Boyd, and Grace cannot believe it! Penny, however, is covered in blood, and can't remember anything about that night. Grace contacts a lawyer, Greg Navarro, who hit her car a month earlier. Greg was a defense attorney, and agreed to take Penny's case.
Penny suffered from Dissociative Identity Disorder, and when Grace gets to the police station, Eve is the identity present. Eve is tough, unlike Penny. There is also Chloe and Ruby, whose identities come out later. Grace is distraught, and Penny is transferred to a state hospital.
After 1.5 years, Penny's trial is upcoming, but Grace, along with Penny's new doc, Mitch McHugh, believe that Penny may be innocent, due to something uncovered during therapy. Meanwhile, Jack and Ryan, Grace's sons, are taking Penny's arrest differently. Jack is making a film about Penny, while Ryan wants nothing to do with her.
As the trial takes place, secrets are revealed, and we learn who killed Rachel.
A good thriller.
The Perfect Daughter is a twisty thriller that is heart wrenching, compelling and pulled me in immediately. Is Penny guilty of a unspeakable crime, or is one of her many alters responsible? Does Penny actually have D.I.D., or is she a skilled actress trying to get away with murder? Is she ill or evil? This character driven thriller broke my heart and intrigued me simultaneously. My heart went out to Grace. Seeking justice for her daughter leads Grace into dangerous territory. Is it possible to both love and fear someone close to your heart? The ending was shocking and surprising! Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for my ARC.
Twists and mystery! This thriller kept me guessing and I did not see the ending coming at all! I was totally into the story!
This was a gripping psychological thriller! I really enjoyed it and did not see the ending coming. The characters were developed so well throughout the book. DID is such an interesting subject.
