This book captured my attention straight out of the gate and didn’t let go until the end. The ending, by the way, that I absolutely did NOT see coming. I love when thrillers keep me in the dark and this one did not let me down. I had a number of theories and not one hit the mark. The characters were also excellent, including Penny and her various alters. I was concerned about how a mental disorder would be treated in a thriller, but it truly felt well researched and not at all used for shock value.
Highly recommend!
Thank you @netgalley and @stmartinspress for the advanced e-copy.
Need a book that you'll be so absorbed in that you'll stay up late reading? This is the one.
There are 2 "views" in this book - a narrated view and a "letter" view from the brother to the sister. The story itself revolves around a teenage girl who is being charged with murder of her birth mother and is currently placed in a mental institution. The mother, Grace, feels it in her bones that her daughter is innocent and rallies those around her to discover the truth. Seems simple, right? WRONG.
The problem is that the daughter has been diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder - a mental disorder that is debatable and involves multiple personalities. Grace must work with the defense attorney as well as the psychiatrist at the institution to prove the daughter's innocent - but first she has to find out who exactly murdered the birth mother.
I loved every moment of this one. It moved at the perfect pace and I found the therapy sessions absolutely thrilling. I figured there would be a happy ending of sorts - but I never saw the ending coming! I love books like that! It definitely thrilling! I absolutely recommend this one to anyone who reads thrillers.
Penny Francone was found at the home of her now-dead birth mom, covered in blood and holding a knife. There is no question of her guilt, the courts just have to decide how to charge her. Because Penny has Disassociative Identity Disorder, there is a possibility she could be found not guilty by reason of insanity. As the trial looms, Penny's mom Grace is determined to find out the reason why Penny would do something like that, and she uncovers a history of abuse and horrors in Penny's past that no one was expecting.
First, let me say I am a huge fan of this author's books. This one, however, just didn't resonate with me. It felt repetitive and the story seemed to drag at times. There also wasn't the "suspense factor" that his other books have. The author did an excellent job researching Disassociative Identity Disorder, though. Not a bad book, just not my favorite.
Loved this! So good, so exciting, so gripping and great story. Can't wait to read more by this author - absolutely brilliant.
The Perfect Daughter an addictive psychological thriller by DJ Palmer that dives into the world of mental health and its stigmas eloquently.
Penny a fragile teenager diagnosed with Disassociative Identity Disorder, is charged with the brutal killing of her biological mother. In what appears on the surface as a slam dunk case dissolves into multilayered story revealing the multiple personalities living inside Penny - Chloe, Eve and Ruby.
Her adoptive family is in a fight for her innocence amidst the constraints of the legal system that believes she’s guilty and the psychiatric facility Penny is residing awaiting trial. Aid by a determined doctor, struggling himself with mental health issues, they uncover the dark secrets Penny has buried deeply in order to survive the threats from her past.
The ending was brilliantly executed, plausible and until the reveal I didn’t see it coming. The Perfect Daughter is riveting, edgy entertaining read.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for an ARC for an honest review.
This book was entertaining from beginning to end. I loved the psychological aspects and the character with DID. The author very obviously did their research in order to write this book. I found the parts where Penny was receiving treatment for her mental health interesting. There were some parts that were not entirely believable, like the mom putting herself in danger to try to get a DNA sample, but it did keep the book interesting. I loved it!
This will be my third book by D. J. Palmer and once again, he did not disappoint! I really enjoyed this thrill ride. Penny who has DID , Also known as multiple personality disorder finds herself accused of murder. There are many twists and turns as this mystery unfolds of who murdered Rachel Boyd, Penny’s birth mother. Thank you #netgalley
This was my first DJ Palmer book, and it WILL NOT be the last. This one will keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat until the very end.
Penny is adopted at the age of 4. When she is a teenager she is diagnosed with DID. Fast forward a few years, and Penny is charged with murder. Her mother is determined to prove her daughter should not be convicted of murder. She sets out to prove her daughter has DID, and should not be held responsible for the crime. Can her mother find enough evidence to support that an alter did the crime? Will the jury agree she is insane? This is a must read for all thriller fans!
The Perfect Daughter is the third book I have read from D.J. Palmer, and like the first two, I was immediately drawn into this complex story and glued to the pages. I was fascinated with the concept that a young girl committed a murder but had no recollection of it because she suffers from multiple personality disorder. I remember watching Sybil, with Sally Fields a long time ago and more recently Split with James McAvoy, and was just so intrigued with how a person's mind could splinter into multiple personalities.
Mr. Palmer does an incredible job of delving into how the human psyche protects itself in people who have D.I.D. by creating distinct personalities to deal with different scenarios that someone deals with in their lives. Penny had dealt with a lot, having been abandoned in a park when she was just four years old. Grace Francone finds her alone and scared, and thus starts the journey of how Penny became a member of the Francone family who adopted her and made her one of them.
From the outside, it looked like all the evidence was stacked against Penny: found at the murder scene covered in blood and holding the murder weapon. But she doesn't remember any of it, so was she truly innocent, or did one of her alters commit the crime and she just doesn't remember it?
Told mostly in the third person, Mr. Palmer leads the reader on a highly complex, edge of your seat journey to find out what really happened that fateful night. With the help of Dr. Mitch McHugh, Grace Francone is determined to move heaven and earth to prove that her daughter is innocent, and was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. But proving that in court is going to be almost impossible, especially when it is SO difficult to prove the D.I.D. diagnosis. I have to admit, I was leaning in a specific direction all the way until the very end.
I really love the use of an unreliable narrator in stories, and although this book is told in the third person and we aren't hearing directly from Penny, she really is an unreliable narrator in that we see each of her alters appear at critical points in time, and each one offers something that, depending on how you look at it, makes the story that much more complicated, or they could be pointing at something that's right in front of our faces and we're took stuck on other details to see it.
That highly explosive ending really threw me for a loop!! I did not see that coming! Bravo, Mr. Palmer, for keeping me focused on other details and sneaking that bombshell in there! What a ride this was!!
WOW! That is one word I can use to describe this book. Also mind-blowing, inquisitive, bingeable, just completely and utterly amazing!
This is by far my favorite thriller of 2021 so far! If you like medical/legal type thrillers or even books about mental illness, then I would highly suggest this one. I knew going into this one that it might be a little hard to read because it does deal with mental illness (HEAVY on the emphasis) but I absolutely devoured this in just a few short days and I am looking forward to reading more by this author in the future.
I would describe this book as another "how far would a mother go to protect her child" type thriller because Grace truly does go above and beyond to find out what happened the night of the murder and she needs to prove her daughter is innocent.
This thriller hits shelves on April 20th, so pre-order your copy now, you will NOT regret it! Thank you for the advanced reader's copy to read and review @stmartinspress and @netgalley @djpalmerauthor
Grace’s 16 year old daughter Penny is accused of murdering her biological mother, Rachael.Penny suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) but it is a diagnosis that is difficult to confirm . Does she truly suffer from multiple personalities or is just a brilliant psychopath ?
A compelling page turner The Perfect Daughter by D.J . Palmer is an interesting take on Dissociative Identity Disorder . Definitely recommend to all who love psychological thriller genres
I would like to thank St. Martin’s Press & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.
The Perfect Daughter focuses on Penny who has a controversial diagnosis of DID and is accused of murder. Palmer handles Penny’s diagnosis in a way that makes it feel realistic and compelling and not a gimmicky part of the story only there for shock value. This story is told through the multiple viewpoints of Penny’s mother and brother, as well as her psychiatrist. I was hooked from the very beginning of The Perfect Daughter, and it kept my interest till the end.
The Perfect Daughter is the second book I’ve read from D.J. Palmer. I really enjoyed his first book as well, and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest feedback!
Another great book from DJ Palmer - quickly becoming one of my must-read authors. Twisty and surprising, this kept me on my toes. Wonderfully written!
I was so excited for this book as I loved his first two. This just fell flat and I was bored throughout.
We have a girl with DID or multiple personality disorder. She has murdered her birth mother, but which she is the question. She is put in a mental institution while awaiting trial. Her adoptive mother feels Penny didn't commit this cringe but one of her alters did.
The part of the book I really liked and I wish we had more chapters of was her brother Ryan doing a documentary film about his sister for a college class.
It was intriguing and gloomy, at first. I felt anxious and dreadful, I mean who is the killer and how is the author going to make use of this debatable mental illness/disorder?
This one has got a clever and amusing twist, definitely your ordinary psychological thriller.
A bunch of thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this free ARC. This review is of my own accord, with no monetary compensation whatsoever from those names mentioned above and/or the rightful owners of this ARC.
Grace's daughter Penny has been charged with the murder of her birth mother after being found covered in blood and holding the murder weapon. However Penny has multiple personality disorder and is placed in a secure hospital whilst under going treatment by Dr Mitch. While waiting for the trial to begin Grace goes all out to prove her daughter's innocence.
Whike i thought the sypnosis for this book was good, i struggled with the first part of the story. However once I got about halfway through my interest picked up and i raced through the rest of the book. Great ending which i did not see coming.
Thanks to Netgalley and publishers for the book in exchange for an honest review
This is a great thriller that shows the truth or lies behind a females multiple personality disorder. There’s a great amount of details of the story line and keep the reader interested. Characters are described in great and time line faillmcrerf
Wow! This book totally surpassed my expectations. Beyond the surprising (but not farfetched) ending, 'The Perfect Daughter' is a fantastic read due to Palmer's capable and compelling storytelling.
This was my first time reading D.J. Palmer, and I can't wait to make my way through their repertoire.
All that Grace Francone had always wished for was to have a daughter, to complete the image of her perfect family. So when she finds a sweet child abandoned in the park, it was like Grace's prayers had been answered. Grace adopts this little girl and Penny becomes the darling of the adopted Francone family. Until Penny starts exhibiting behavioral changes and is diagnosed with DID, dissociative identity disorder, simply known as multiple personality disorder.
And then, Penny is found next to a woman's body, knife in hand and covered in the victim's blood. The victim, Penny's biological mother, Rachel Boyd, but Penny remembers nothing. Her alter personality, Eve surfaces if and when Penny feels threatened but is Eve capable of murdering someone? Yet all evidence points to Penny and she is being charged with this murder. Grace has just one chance to save her daughter on the grounds of mental instability. What if Penny really is innocent and could actually have witnessed the murder? And that is the rest of this psychological thriller.
I liked reading this book, but I'm not sure if I like it enough to rate it with 4 stars.
The synopsis was intriguing but the book overall was only sufficiently enthralling that I took my cool time reading a few pages every day. The book is truly a psychological thriller, the key word here is "psychological " and kudos to the author for his impressive research in mental health issues pertaining to DID and addiction / rehabilitation. I really liked how well structured his characters were. Even the minor character Adam's struggle with the drug addiction, seems credible. The narrative is interspersed with Penny's brother,Jack's POV too and that was sardonic and entertaining to read. And this I wish had received more prominence in the book. Nevertheless a big 👍to this book and hope to read more of this author's work in the future.
The Perfect Daughter by D. J. Palmer is my second book by this author. I thought he did a great job on The Perfect Husband but this one is definitely my favorite of the two! This brilliant psychological thriller is written around a character with DID..... Dissociative Identity Disorder that Palmer really did his homework on!! He brings the character to life that makes the book that much readable and unable to put down! His complex and edgy writings kept me totally enthralled in this book and completely guessing throughout! Just when I thought I figured it out he throws another curveball and takes you deeper into the book! If you like suspenseful psychological thrillers then I highly recommend you read this one in April! You will not be disappointed!!
