I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed are my own.
This is one of those journals that REALLY makes me wish I were better at keeping a journal.
It's definitely for the neurotic (as its name states)/anxious and features clever statements on pages, while also leaving quite a few completely blank ones. You could also definitely use the statements as journaling prompts, if you were so inclined. It's refreshing to flip through and see all those thoughts you can't necessarily give voice to.
Bottom line: Despite receiving it on NetGalley, I definitely don't recommend it as an e-book! But I DO, however, recommend it if you're a neurotic journaler. :)
I must admit that I am one of those people that loves a good notebook, even more so now I am working from home as it was a bit of a mission at the outset to be organised when working full time at home with a two (now three) year old but I got there in the end!
This book is one I would definitely buy – the comments are honest, witty, funny, true and light-hearted and they did make me giggle in places too and it would definitely brighten my day when I turned over the page.
I read this one sitting and found some of it funny but I was not as amused I as should have been considering this was categorized as humor. Some of the one liners and ouns were great, the rest of it was quite dull. I have just read more funny books this year than what was in this "notebook.:
Don't waste your time. Read something else. One star is plenty generous for this.
Thanks to Netgalley, Lena Friedman and the publisher (who is not listed) for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Available: 1/5/21
“The Neurotic Notebook playfully explores the relationship between the meaning of words and their visual forms.” It said the blurb when I choose the book in the catalogue. First of all I want to thanks #Netgalley and the publisher for the arc, in exchange for the honest review.
The neurotic notebook by Lena Friedrich is a very difficult book to catalogue. For moments it's on the same page that “The princess saves herself in this one” but made out of one hundred one liners, and in other they are just random phrases with a clever use of the graphic design.
You will read it in about twenty minutes or less. There just one hundred sentences in the whole book, well… notebook.
The sentences are common place of some sort of universal neurosis. Things like: “You dont feel great, you are a looser, maybe you will get better”, and that sort of thing.
My two stars goes for the designer who put this together, who is the actual responsible that this books looks awesome in some aesthetic way. Like a scribble notepad.
I was hoping for more. I don´t know… these kind of books that you could actually tweet in one thread, don´t get along with me. Even if is there is some attempt to reflect about neurosis and daily life.
This one was easy to read, but that doesn't mean anything, although you could put it as fast reading to increase the volume of your Goodreads reading challenge. Twenty minutes one book more.
Loved this comical one-liners book with wittiness at every page.
Communicates about the modern-day crises of man in a minimalist fashion and with humour and satire is a remarkable and impressive manner.
Would suggest this recreational book that will rejuvenate your mood and lift you.
The Neurotic Notebook by Lena Friedrich is a unique exploration of the relationship between words and the visual context into which they are placed. The book itself is playful, and will definitely appeal to readers whose interests lie in the image - word dichotomy. This was a fun diversion, but not a book that I can envision purchasing for myself.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the chance to read this ARC.
I can definitely see myself buying this! It was a really funny read!
I was provided an advanced digital copy of the book from the publisher via Netgalley for review purposes, all opinions are my own.
A very quick read, which is more quirky than funny. I think this would make a great notebook, but it doesn’t appear to be a great coffee table read.
Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.
The Neurotic Notebook is a very quick little read that works on several levels. At one level it's a collection of clever visual word jokes that illustrate a thought using fonts and layout. On a deeper level it showcases negative self-talk and positive affirmations.
I think some pages of this book would work pretty well as a conversation starter in groups and counseling sessions if they were made into a deck of cards.
I read a digital ARC I got from Netgalley.
I never anticipated that I would read so much reading this type of book! This was so funny! I thought it would be mainly a doodle book, and it is, but not mostly, the sentences are funny enough to make it worth it just for them. Totally recommend it!
Very very quick “notebook” full of rebus puzzleesque phrases, puns and typography play. While I am a neurotic and I could commiserate with much of what was written, I’m not sure how this is an actual book. It took me all of 3 minutes to get through it and I didn’t find it satisfying.
