This was cute. Not my favorite bound comic collection though. The COVID jokes were very lack luster. I usually read to escape the world that is going around, and that's why I love little comic collections and graphic novels. To see jokes about COVID at the moment, I really did not appreciate those.
Loved the idea with the inner monologues as the text on the candy hearts.
Some of the cartoons were snort-funny, some made me smile, some were meh, but the overal was a nice quarantine distraction.
I was kindly provided with an e-arc of this book via NetGalley.
Candy Hearts is a hilarious graphic novel detailing the different stages of dating in a modern world. It covers relationships that are just beginning, ones that are years long, ones where children are involved and ones that are going to end in divorce. There are relationships that are forming through Tinder and ones that are dealing with Covid-19. I really enjoyed the modern aspects, especially ones based on the cornavirus pandemic.
It was refreshing to see a humerous outlook on the pandemic, particularly with relationships. There were comics describing how some realised they were ready for a relationship, just before they went into a lockdown and then they were left unable to date under normal circumstances. There were also ones where they were seeing someone and then realised they didn't want anything serious with them, only to then go into lockdown and end up quarantining with them.
I really enjoyed the focus of two people coming together and rarely being in the same place or not thinking in the same way as the other person in their relationship.
If you're looking for a quick, humerous read, I highly recommend Candy Hearts.
4/5 stars
A unique and silly interpretation of inner dialogue...some of them are shockingly right on point, others are a little cliche.
I received this as an eARC to read for free in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for giving me access.
This had me laughing from the first page. The truth hurts and it is hilarious. Siegel does a great job of bringing everyday life to life with these 'conversation' hearts. Who said they were only for Valentine's Day? LOL
I would like to thank you for the eARC of this book which was kindly provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Tommy Siegel presents "candy hearts" who talks. Every situation shows what every candy heart thinks based on dating, relationship, family and most recent events of quarantine. I was curious to read this specific comic as I have not read anything of a similar style, so I wanted to see how it goes. Unfortunately, I do not know why, but it was not that funny for me as it should have been. It was a quick read and it was interesting to see how the author projected his ideas of what candy hearts could think in a particular situation.
Funny, sarcastic and very realistic comics for adults.
I just loved this sarcastic little book of comics about dating. Instead of people, the characters in this book are colorful candy hearts, which is awesome because the gender inclusivity that entails (especially with the exclusive use of "they").
In every comic, it is shown what the candy hearts are really thinking during a certain interaction. Shocked at the daring accuracy of it, I was compelled to send individual pages to my friends, pretending like it's social interaction too.
All I can say is that I wish this book was much longer.
I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased opinion.
Candy Hearts is a book of comics based around the premise that what is written on the candy heart is what the person is thinking but not saying in whatever situation they have been drawn in. I enjoyed this book even more than Siegel's debut comic collection. These hilarious single panel comics will definitely have you relating with what the candy hearts are thinking. My only concern is that some comics may not age well, as they relate to the pandemic, which will age the book with time.
The best way to laugh at modern relationships is graphic humor and this book is amazing at it.
The perfect comic for people who have gone through difficult situations either in dating, or using dating apps. 3.5/5
thanks to #NetGalley for the #CandyHearts e-ARC.
Very cute and hilarious cartoons! Many of these were very relatable and I definitely chuckled out loud at many of them.
This comic gives a simplified view of relationships, with the help of candy hearts. It is a quick read, with many great ones that made me laugh out loud, like the naming the rats or Valentine's Day one. It's an interesting concept that has a lot of potentials. It contains very relatable situations, from established relationships to first dates, situations that many people go through. It gives a look at the thoughts that go through people's minds while they interact with others. There is no denying it that some of these actually happened to me as well. Although there were some weird ones that made me frown, they were quickly forgotten because of the next comic.
Overall, it was a nice book, happy to have read it.
3.5/5
As a fan of Tommy Siegel, I had seen many of these before online, but there were some new ones to laugh at. They crack me up, and I do enjoy the candy hearts art more than some of his other works because his noses bother me, haha!
This was a much much more enjoyable book than I Hope This Helps: 500 Days of Comics and Extremely Helpful Guides by this same author. This one was pretty witty and did get a chuckle out of me in a few instances. The jokes were much better this time around as well. The art style is still pretty good! I'd like to see more of this from this author in the future!
I wasn't sure what to think of Candy Hearts when I first picked it up, but once I started reading it, it felt like exactly what I needed. The type of humor these little comics have is the kind of humor that you laugh at because it is just too true.
Siegel looks at the very real and awkward social situations we all seem to get into, by using candy hearts to demonstrate the inner thoughts we all tend to have. I found the comics that related to COVID-19, 2020, and quarantine to be especially funny because they are just way too real not to be. Comparing the before and after is something we have all been laughing at lately. Anyone with any kind of social anxiety or has ever been in an awkward situation I think you will get a kick out of this little book.
If you are looking for a quick read that will give you a good laugh I highly recommend this one.
This collection of comics is cute and funny, and made me laugh a lot. The unique set-up is that every comic represents romantic partners as candy hearts with their interior monologues written over their faces. Many of the comics focus on dating, and specifically Internet dating, while a smaller number involve marriage and family life.
The comics also include references to current realities, such as the one which contrasts romantic rejection from before COVID-19 with asking "Do you want to go out for a drink in 2021?" and still hearing no. Given that this book isn't going to be published until February 2021, that will be less funny at the time, but this is still a great collection of web comics, and the occasional COVID-19 humor will still be relevant, and will eventually be a funny throwback to anyone who was navigating love life challenges during this era.
Some of these comics are too vulgar for my tastes, which is why I am only giving this book three stars, but people who do not mind foul language or crass sexual references will enjoy this more than I did. Even with the occasional content that I don't prefer, I really enjoyed this, because it is a creative, well-executed idea that plays with dramatic contrast and human nature.
This book is a unique take on the differing relationships present in society today. Whilst it is a short, graphic novel with little depth to the 'story' (as it has no story) it is a profound telling of modern relationships that should be read as an insight into the modern psyche.
I really enjoyed the illustrations of this book, and the depth given to the harts by Siegel.
However, whilst this was an interesting look into modern relationships, it became a bit repetitive around the halfway mark of the graphic novel, because it was the same thing over and over again. I wish there was a bit more 'story' to it, or some sort of link between the hearts, rather than just a perspective on relationships.
This book is hilarious, I couldn’t stop laughing. The words are so honest that regardless of who you are you will find a comic that represents a situation you have been in which is awesome. Right now the world is very dark but this is a light in the darkness. It’s so relatable in a good way and I’m so in love with it!!!
This book was given to me in exchange for a review, all opinions are mine.
This was a fun comic to read!
Its candy hearts, but think candy hearts for modern times. Instead of the normal lovely quotes, you get hilarious inner monologues of people written on the candy hearts. God i wish these were actual candy hearts i'll buy them in a beat.
The further you go into this book the funnier and more relatable it becomes.
If you are looking for something that would have you randomly laughing on a train, get this book.
I picked up this one because the premise sounded humorous and like it would be a good palette cleanser from some of the other stuff I've been reading lately, and it was exactly that. These single page comments of candy hearts saying what they are really thinking and feeling in the moment. Be forewarned that there is some language, but if you're looking for a very relatable laugh, this is a great one for it.
I absolutely love the clever humor and drawings in these comics! Definitely will appeal to adults. I will look forward to the next one of its kind.
