This has been on my TBR for several years now, and I can’t seem to make myself finish it. I’m sorry! I’m sure someone will love it, but it just isn’t for me.
Skirting Dznger by Kay Keppler
Phoebe left her job she loved in the CIA after information received turned out not to be true and she gets suspended. She Returns home and her mother in Vegas is working in a chapel doing Elvis weddings .
A light hearted story with quite a few twist and quirky characters. A really fun read just found myself secretly cheering Phoebe to win. Light heart enjoyable read
I breezed through this fun and action-packed book loving everything about the main character and the interesting cast of characters that surround her even though I don't think any of the events are particularly realistic, or at least I hope they aren't.
Phoebe Renfrew was suspended from her brand-new job as a CIA language analyst because they don't believe her warning about an attack in New York was true. So she moves to Las Vegas to crash on her mother's couch and ends up accidentally finding a lead that might be connected to that case (helping her reinstatement) along with a job as a Korean translator for the big-man on the town, former NFL quarterback Chase Bonaventure. What follows is a story full of oddball characters, crazy stunts, and a ton of fun.
Keppler keeps the story light and entertaining even when touching on darker topics, which I really appreciate in a rom-com. Even when dark themes of imprisonment in North Korea or child abandonment come into play, the overall tone remains pretty upbeat.
Overall, it's not a life-changing or once-in-a-lifetime story, but it's an extremely entertaining for right now story that I highly recommend.
Happy thanks to NetGalley and Victory Editing for the fun read!
Felt that the main character tried to be funny and interesting, but failed.
I ended up just being very much bored of it all. Nothing interested me.
This is book 1 in the Chasing the CIA series. CIA language analyst Phoebe Renfrew has been suspended for a hunch that got the wrong kind of attention. Forced to move back in with her mother, who is completely irresponsible, she takes a job just to be able to eat. When she accidently discovers an even bigger plot this time, can she win the trust of her old boss and stop the threat, or will it all blow up in her face?
Not the book for me. There was too much fluff, not enough backstory. We learn basically nothing about Chase - he is a stand in for any male lead. The entire CIA plot is over the top and not in a fun way.
This book certainly had a unique storyline that I haven't come across before which was certainly refreshing!
When Phoebe finds herself being forced into leave from the CIA for reporting a terrorist attack that she thought was going to happen, however when it didn't things didn't turn out too well for her.
She moves back to Las Vegas to live with her mother and begins working at a wedding chapel. When she overhears a group of men speaking in Korean, which is one of the several languages she knows thanks to her previous line of work, she knows they have something awful planned, but no one is willing to listen to, or believe her. Then we meet Bonaventure, who is a famous quarterback that asks her to help him with her translation skills, and sparks begin to fly.
This is such a fun, entertaining story that has the perfect mix of mystery, drama and romance. I really enjoyed this book.
Sometimes books and I just don't get along. We don't click, there's no spark. This was that kind of book for me– just not my cup of tea. The characters were interesting and quirky, but not enough to keep me hooked. I didn't stay up late reading this, and in fact, took long stretches of time reading other books before reluctantly returning to this. Also, I want to be swooned (is that a word? haha), and the romantic interest didn't do it for me.
Definitely give this read a shot- you might end up loving it!
This was a such a cute story! Some parts were a little over the top and silly but in a fun way - I wouldn't change a thing about this rom com. Not only did I love Pheobe and Chase but I even liked the bad guys in the book. It helped to keep everything light hearted and fun which is really the only reason I read rom coms in the first place. It totally reminded me of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum which i love.

I’m giving 3 stars!
What a cute book! Easy romantic comedy read. I found myself laughing and enjoying the writing.
The storyline was sweet and the ending made me happy. Overall a fun and spicy read.
The only drawback I had was I wanted to skim through some parts to get to the juicy stuff or the end.
This book was the perfect escape. It was lovely and fun. It was my first book by this author and I will definitely be on the look out for more!!
I laughed so hard!
Skirting Danger is a sweet romance with an imperfectly perfect heroine who takes life one day at a time, it's touch of humor and the mix of romance is out of this world. I laughed half the time and the other half, I could not wait for her to know the major male character liked her.
A lovely story.
Phoebe has a problem. As a CIA language analyst, she speaks 7 languages and she swears she overheard a threat to national security in one of them. Flash forward - Phoebe has been suspended and working for an Elvis wedding chapel in Las Vegas & living with her mother. Here's the problem - she heard another threat and this time she's determined to prove it!
I enjoyed the book and found myself rooting for Phoebe. Throw in a recent SuperBowl winning football player turned businessman, quirky supporting characters and you have a fun way to spend an afternoon.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and the opinions expressed in this review are my own.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and while it wasn’t my favorite book to read, I found some parts entertaining.
I loved it! This book is a wonderfully written, action-adventure story of international intrigue! Phoebe, the heroine, is a recent college graduate whose degree was paid for by the CIA in return for years of service. After only two months of CIA service, she is suspended. Phoebe moves to Las Vegas to wait out her investigation and an incredible series of events unfolds, even a little romance. If you enjoy well-developed, quirky, delightful characters and a straight shooter heroine who always finds trouble, this book is for you. Thank you to Net Galley and ARC Publishers for the opportunity to read it for my review.
Skirting Danger was cute, slightly confusing but cute! It has all the making of a cute romance with the thrill of a mystery. I felt as if the terrorist threat but a weird choice but I also didn't hate it....just wish it wasnt there altogether. I love Phoebe as a main character and wish I could be friends with her.. Chase is fine but I did like the romance aspect of the book so yay! Will read the rest of the series.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. Phoebe is on leave from the CIA for reporting on a terrorist attack that she THOUGHT would happen and didn't. She moves to Las Vegas to live with her mother and work at a wedding chapel. While overhearing a couple of guys speak in Korean (one of 7 languages she knows), she knows they are up to no good but no one believes her. Enter Bonaventure, a famous quarterback that needs her translation skills. Will she get to the bottom of these 2 guys while working at her new job? Cute and fun mystery! #skirtingdanger #kaykeppler #Oct2020
A fun, fast read with great characters and a plot which balances intrigue and humour. Loved the characters especially Sanjay and really enjoyed their interactions. Seems even terrorist threats can make for a relatively light read! Definitely one for readers who like quirky mysteries.
Phoebe Is the MC and has a unique personality. I don’t really know how to describe this book. It wasn’t bad it had funny parts and some romance. The story was difficult to follow.

I loved this cozy mystery take on stopping terrorism! The main character, Pheobe, is a suspended CIA language analyst and I think she is the the cutest spitfire! Pheobe is strong-willed and determined and I love her for that!
One of the things I loved most about this book is that the terrorism threat is not stress-inducing! The book is so funny and the terrorists are basically a hot mess. I laughed throughout reading this and it brought joy to my day!
This is a quick read and I had trouble putting it down! I really enjoyed the lighthearted escape from reality this created! I can't wait to read the future books (& I'll probably re-read this one again on a hard day!)
I'm so grateful to Kay Keppler, Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this ARC ebook in exchange for my honest review.
