Talk about a pleasant surprise! I received this audiobook for review from NetGalley (these are all my own opinions) and I thought it would be a fluffy quick listen. I was wrong. I loved the relationship with the characters friends and family! The war was just a layer of the story and the funniest part. The narrator was great even with the guy voices. I’m so glad I gave this a listen and was pleasantly surprised.
I really enjoyed listening to the book...so much so that I bought the first book in the series. That doesn’t mean that I liked the heroine initially. It was very hard for me to click with Bree because I just couldn’t understand why she was acting like such a child. There really was no reason, even though, yes, she was dealing with a traumatic experience. It was just kinda unbelievable. I’m not sure that excuses her behavior, though. I kept going with the book because of Chip. In a great turn of events, Chip humanizes Bree for me, and I enjoyed that element of the book. I enjoyed it. I probably would give it 3.5, but bump it up to 4 because the narrator did such a good job. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
A heartwarming rom-com in the spirit of the 80s and 90s movies. Neighbors and enemies Chip and Brie start a prank war against each other in hopes to get the upper hand in controlling their quiet street. A cute tale with a few poignant moments.
Kate Rudd narrates the audiobook and is great. I listen to a lot of audiobooks and haven’t had the pleasure of listening to one of her narrations. I’ll definitely be looking up her work
I’m a lover of rom-coms and this was fun. This is the first audiobook I’ve listened to from netgalley.
It’s a funny premise, girl meets boy, and crazy escapades ensue! Laughed out loud more times than I can count!
Thank you so much to the publisher and to Netgalley for copy of this audiobook to review. After listening to five chapters I decided to DNF at 17%. The synopsis and an enemies to lovers neighbour romance drew me into the book but it is not working for me for a number of reasons. A few tropes, character interactions and directions taken are just not what I look for in a romance or romcom. I can definitely see this one working for others and hope you enjoy it!
"The Cul-de-Sac War" by Melissa Ferguson was the sweet fun read that I desperately needed in my life! The main character Bree is working at a performance theater... trying to make ends meet and is living in her grandmother's old house. During a performance, she meets a knight in shining armor who provides her with some green duct tape to save her from a major wardrobe malfunction. However, this dream boat of a man turns out to be Bree's new next door neighbor who is going to complicate her life.
This story had some sweet snippets and was a fun read. The material was a little cliche at times, but I still enjoyed hearing all about the character interactions. I loved Bree's introduction to Russell! What a fun way to bring the two main characters together! Plus, I love dogs so this passage was a highlight for me.
In terms of the audiobook, the narration was good. The narrator was clear and easy to follow along with. I didn't particularly feel gripped by the voice acting, but it wasn't off putting either. With different points of view, I would have preferred two voice actors versus one person changing their voice. However, overall it was a great listen!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for sharing this audiobook with me in exchange for an honest review!
I'm becoming a fan of audiobooks very quickly. This is the second audiobook I listen to and I truly believe it was the way to go with this story.
This was a cute, fun, rom-com. I'm always in for an enemies-to-lovers romance but I feel like we got a lot of the enemies and very little of the lovers. Still, with a couple changes here and there, I think this would make a great movie.
Bree is the kind of person who has tried a million different jobs and still hasn't found The One for her. Currently, she's an actress at a theater playing a (very) minor role in a Midsummer Night's Dream. During one of her performances, her fairy costume starts falling apart on stage and when she rushes to find the costume designer before she has to get back on stage she meets Chip, who helps her out and saves the day.
Turns out Chip has just moved to the house next door to hers and is working on renovating it. They quickly begin their hating game and start playing pranks on one another as if they were 15 year-olds. Some of which are quite imaginative, I must say. And you can imagine the rest.
So yeah, like I said, it was a fun rom-com, but nothing about it really stood out. It was a solid 3 star read.
It was a cute banterful romance. Chip and Bree's relationship is a regular Hallmark love story. Two very capable and type A personalities clashing, yet very much attracted to each other. However, the story is missing a certain humorous element that would make a story more enjoyable. The style of writing is very monotone. There is no climax or fireworks.
The narrator was good. Her voice was light and the speed in which she reads is consistent.
Thank you to Thomas Nelson Publishing and NetGalley for letting me read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A fun, almost slapstick-humorous romance about two neighbours who keep making each others lives difficult. This was so comedic, especially the audiobook - the narrator's dialogue had the funniest intonations, it made it all ten times funnier. A thoroughly enjoyable escapist read.
Loved this audiobook! A great story full of a woman and man each finding their own path in life and career brought to life with humor and love. While it seems like a typical love story, this book follows the paths of two people trying to find their purpose when love finds them.
Unfortunately, this book just didn't work for me. I listened to part of this as an audio book and read part as a print copy. The narrator of the audio book was good and she definitely kept me engaged in the lightheartedness of the story.
To start with, the book just didn't match the synopsis. I thought from the narrative that Bree had inherited half of the house? The synopsis seems to indicate that there was a bargain worked out with her parents, but I didn't get that at all. Maybe Bree was flighty when it comes to jobs, but I also didn't get that from the plot. She was acting from the first page, so I never saw evidence of previous jobs. Also, in what universe would a bit part at an out of the way theater support a person? I want to live there! And I thought Shakespeare was public domain for theaters, so I didn't buy that suddenly this theater company doesn't have the rights to perform Much Ado About Nothing after the cast had been hired (and why didn't they have contracts and how were they getting paid if they didn't?)--my logical brain just couldn't make sense of all of these seemingly large holes.
The love story just didn't ring true. Admittedly, once the relationship between Bree and Chip developed, it was cute and their banter was endearing. However, it took most of the book for that to gel and for me it was too little, too late. I was so angered by the dog basically attacking her and holding her hostage and his attitude of both thinking it was funny and not a big deal that I almost quit reading right then (and it was nearly at the beginning of the book). The pranks got really old and I found myself rolling my eyes far more often than chuckling at their adolescent behavior.
Overall, if you light light romantic comedy, you might enjoy this one. It just wasn't the right book for me.
I thought this book was pretty good. I would recommend it for someone who usually enjoys YA but wants to move to more adult characters without the explicit sex scenes. This could potentially be great for late teens who want to start reading some light romance.
We get to know Chip & Bree through a dual narrative story after they become neighbours. This is a sweet enemy to lovers story with a Christian theme that isn't overpowering at all.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for my free review audio copy.
I liked this book because I just love romance, but out of what I’ve read so far this year it’s not my favorite. The neighborly feud really did feel a little childish to me and that made it hard for me to care about the characters. I also felt as though there could have been more character build up. The dialogue however was fantastic, and I laughed out loud quite a bit. I do think that the dialogue could have been dialed back a little to help the story move forward faster and for the characterization to be more prominent as well. I listened to this book, and really adored the narrator. She was the perfect voice for the sarcastic commentary for the characters. For devoted followers of light hearted romance, this is for you.
Thank you NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for the audio copy of this book.
I'm not sure why, but I didn't feel any attachments to this book as I was listening to it. There was nothing wrong with it, per se, I just didn't enjoy it as much as I wish I had.
I really, really enjoyed listening to this cute contemporary romcom. I had earlier requested for an e-Arc of this book which didn't get approved so when I saw that the audio was up for request as well I took my chance and was so glad to get it. I feel listening to the book was a better option for me because I don't think I would have enjoyed reading the book as much as I have enjoyed listening to it. Voice actress Kate Rudd has done a very fine job narrating this entire book, all characters included.
My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Thomas Nelson and the author Melissa Ferguson for the audio ARC of the book. The audio book will be released on 10th November 2020.
Rating:🌟🌟🌟🌟 sunshiny stars!
I really enjoyed this book. It was so fun, hilarious, and down-to-earth. Bree and Chip were so comedic in their war with each other but I also liked how they both had achievable dreams. This is a definite don't-put-down-until-the-last-page-is-read book.
This was a very quick RomCom with opposing neighbors having a feud that leads to attraction. I don’t know that I entirely bought the attraction part because the vast majority of the book was about their rather expensive and destructive neighborhood fight. The turning point for the characters was well done with some realistic hard conflicts for the characters. Overall it was cute and a quick read.
⚔️❤️After success of "The dating charade" @melissaferguson has come up with this hilarious romcom. After a long time I read and enjoyed the funny & fussy, infuriating and goofy love story where both are at tug of war all the time!
⚔️❤️So basically Bree Leake gets unexpected opportunity of having her dream home of her grandma & professional offer and amidst her own conflicts she ends up having encounters with her annoying and unavoidable next door neighbour Chip Mcbride. She is ready to move heaven and earth to have him off her cul - de - sac and out of her life, but she's stuck and can't leave her house!
⚔️❤️I honestly took little time to get into the hang of the story on audio since the female voice only made male voice! But once Bree-Chip banter began,I could not stop myself! I mean who will think of romance the way they hated like enemies totally plotting against each other?! The side characters like Andy or Cassie or Bree's parents were likeable too.
⚔️❤️I recently had a soft and emotional angles on reading lovestories, so this enemies turned lovers with their innovative pranks was a goodread I enjoyed and the language is easy and funny. Epilogue was satisfactory too!

The Cul-de-Sac War by Melissa Ferguson is a heartwarming rom-com that will have you laughing out loud.
Kate Rudd narrates the audiobook and her voice added to the humor. Her narration was incredible, filled with amazing tone & intonation that made the story come alive.
I truly loved this story. There were so many funny, quirky, and ridiculous moments that made you fall for the characters. The characters in the story are so relatable in their struggles. I can't wait to listen this book again!
I'm so grateful to Melissa Ferguson, Thomas Nelson, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this ARC audiobook in exchange for my honest review.
Bree and Chip have a meet-cute at the theatre where Bree is performing in A Midsummer Night's Dream. She looks for him in the audience and sees him with his girlfriend, so she sneaks out and goes home. Behind her is the most annoying truck in the world. They both drive to her quiet cul-de-sac, where the driver is, of course, Chip.
Bree has a hard time keeping a job, and Chip has just left his family business to start one of his own. Bree's housemate is crazy, wanting to go off the grid and take away things like electricity and WiFi. Because the house belonged to her grandmother, Bree is reluctant to leave despite less than ideal living conditions.
Bree and Chip enjoy torturing each other. His dog knocks her down; she makes him move his electric fence. He sends her crazy magazine subscriptions; she signs him up for email lists and leaves magazines about addiction on his porch for his girlfriend to see. Their "war" becomes increasingly ridiculous, like something you'd only see in a scripted TV show.
Keeping each other constantly in their thoughts leads them to realize their feelings of hatred are quite the opposite.
This book is a good diversion for people looking to step out of reality. Romance readers will be left wanting more, but fans of women's fiction will enjoy the relationship.
