Historical fiction in Spain around the 10th century. usually the historical fiction I read doesn’t go before the 1800s. I was intrigued to learn more about these seven noble knights as well. Doesn’t it sound like these seven are honorable and the center of the story?
This book has two parts. The first shares about the Noble knights, who are brother’s. It describes their personalities and antics. Readers learn about their parents and family leading up to and following the second wedding of their uncle. There’s death on wedding day as well as the following day.
The seven are sent into an unfair battle against thousands while their father is sent to deliver a message in hopes of collecting the money the groom says he is owed. Only it’s not what the letter states and the father is imprisoned for some time.
The second part is all about the revenge of the events of the part one. It takes hundreds of knights and assistance of those who have been wronged to carry out revenge. It’s only fair that they all have a chance to seek their revenge.
The mother of the seven noble knights, Doña Sancha, seems to go through the most. The mother of seven sons and sister of the wedding described earlier. She is the matriarch of her family, holding herself up as confidently as she can. I like her resilience, her calm in face of her adversity.
Then there’s her brother. He, Ruy, maybe a high Noble knights, but he acts very cowardly. He allows his new wife to boss him around to the point of killing his only family and leaving his big sister destitute and penniless. His puffed up strength is quickly tumbled when he learns there’s another child who will avenge his brothers. On the run with two hundred soldiers, he falters at the hands of Mudarra.
A digital copy of Seven Noble Knights by J K Knauss was received complimentary with no obligation to review by Encircle Publications via NetGalley. I give this story 4 out of 5 tiaras because while it’s really well written, I sense that there’s parts missing. Like how is it that Mudarra’s mother and uncle so willing to send him to the Christians when their religion forbids it?
Love the premise and the unusual time period. This book started slow for me, and that may have been due to the number of characters. However, once I got into it, it flowed smoothly and enjoyably.
