Very well developed characters and an extremely engaging story. Well thought out and very suspenseful story line that keeps the reader guessing until the final twist! This is the book to read this year! Highly recommended!

A richly woven story with amazing atmosphere.
This is two story’s and I will speak to each respectively.
The first story was not my favourite, the characters behaviour actually annoyed me throughout. It was not very realistic. But the way the landscape and characters life is brought to life is very well done and worth a read.
The second story was much better and I liked the characters much more. Again a rich landscape which I love. This one followed a more solid storyline and was a nice read albeit not overly dramatic.

Both stories would fall under a more romance type read vs anything suspenseful or mystery.

Distrust is a two novel collection of the 1995 book Renegade Son and the 1997 book Midnight Sun.
Renegade Son is about Caleb Johnson wanting to buy Daniele’s property to build Summer Ridge, but she won’t sell him her land. Chase was sent to Dani Summers property to find a way to get her to sell her land to Caleb.
Three months ago Cody’s father wrote a letter to him giving him hope that he would return to the farm. Everyday Cody went to the mailbox hoping to find another letter. It’s been seven years since Cody has seen his father.
Dani divorced Blake five years ago after he sold part of her family’s land. He ran off with another woman leaving her with a four year old son. Cody remains hopeful her parents will reunite.
On top of being threatened by Caleb to take her land she also had to deal with her ex trying to take her son away from her. Her only ally might be the guy who is partners with Caleb. The problem is she’s not sure she can trust him. Nonetheless, Chase upsets her life more than she would have ever thought possible.
Both are short story’s with each including fourteen chapters. Renegade Son is an insta-love romance with an element of enemy to lovers. Dani was an excellent mother and her son Cody was a likable character. Chase’s character never gave up on Dani proving his loyalty. Where the story fell short was in Dani’s inability to trust. The story was a bit wordy in places.

Midnight Sun is about Ashley being an outsider within her family. She was accustomed to the gossip from her family.
Ashley inherited her fathers business Stephens Timber which made matters worse with her cousin.
Stephens Timber Corporation and Daniels Logging Company were both competitive families fighting for the same timber business. When Ashley began dating her rival Daniel her father disowned her, yet upon his death left her the company.
Midnight Sun is a second chance romance with the enemy to lovers element.

Both story focus on female characters who don’t trust men because they got burned by men in the past. They build a wall around their heart to protect them from getting hurt. But love is the cure that breaks down the wall.
Both were okay. I wasn’t completely invested in the characters from either story.
I was disappointed by how much distrust was thrust into the characters, yet all was pushed aside when sexual desire came into play. I was bothered by the ploy to create a strong willed independent female character weakened by sex with the one guy she hated yet loved. The attempt to create a forbidden relationship was overshadowed by all this distrust.
I’m surprised by the number of spelling errors in both these books. An editor needs to reread both books and fix the errors. Normally I wouldn’t care, but were talking about books written in 1995 and 1997. These are releases with the same mistakes.
Both books had too many details zapping the story of subtext. I skim read through both books. This was one of those on-the-nose narratives where every minute detail was included.

The two novellas in this book are older books being re-released. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.

Renegade Son

I liked Chase and Dani. Dani is spunky and Chase is quite alpha. There are a lot of twists and turns in this romantic suspense. There is a dog and an equally spunky kid so I couldn’t help but like the book.

Midnight Sun

This is a second chance romance. Ashley is smart, determined and surrounded by greed, deception and ruthlessness. Trevor is smart and Ashley’s cousin is trying to destroy his career. This book has a lot of angst and deceit. It’s a very interesting book.
