Are you looking for a great way to introduce the Bible and the story of the Gospel to your kids? "The Bright Light and the Super Scary Darkness" is an excellent route to go! From Creation to the Resurrection, this story is a great summary of the Gospel in easy-to-understand terms and images. An amazing look at the hope and assurance we have that Jesus, the light of the world, will defeat the sin and darkness of our world, this is definitely a must have book for families!
This is super preachy and the cover does not depict what the book is actually about. It's lucky if it's featured in 3-4 pages. Otherwise completely different art style and story. Very misleading and very disappointed.
So much of our fear seems to spring from what we don't know, and the night is filled with things we don't know. This book acknowledges that fear and explores the way that the Bible talks about light and darkness. "The whole Bible is really one big story about the light and the dark," the young narrator explains.
Within that context, DeWitt shares the whole story of Scripture—the times when it seemed like the dark was winning, and the times that the light won. The book ends with a fun twist that reminds readers that though the darkness can be scary, it doesn't have to be: after all, we know the One who is the Light of the World. Whatever darkness we face, whatever uncertainty, he has already vanquished it. And he will never leave us truly alone in the dark.
4 stars. This was a sweet children's book and yay for Jewishness in all colors. It's good to see a children's book with so many different shades of the Jewish faith. Review to come.
Due to being a high school teacher, I often do not have time to review and fall behind on reviewing. Here are my initial thoughts.
A New Book to Help Kids Trust God in the Dark
Whether your child is afraid of the dark or not, we all have reason to be afraid of the darkness of sin that stains our world. I’m thankful for a new kid’s book, The Bright Light and the Super Scary Darkness by Dan DeWitt.
The Bright Light shows how the big story of the Bible offers hope to all of our fears — because Christ came to shine light into our darkness.
This is a great book to help kids understand why they’re afraid, and why they can trust God in the midst of any kind of darkness.

Author Dan Dewitt tells the story of Jesus, the light of the world in his beautifully illustrated children’s picture book, The Bright Light and the Super Scary Darkness.
Illustrator Rea Zhui uses glow-in-the-dark ink to help share the message that God’s light always outshines any darkness present in reader’s worlds.
This beautiful little book starts out with a young boy, his dog, teddy bear, and flashlight emerging from the pretend camping tent set up in his bedroom during the night with fear etched in their faces.
Our narrator begins the story with a question: Have you ever been afraid of the dark?
Though most readers would assume the narrator was speaking about the commonly-held trepidation about nighttime terror, Dewitt takes the opportunity to share with readers the Biblical story of how light and darkness outline the history of our world from its inception.
Dewitt shares the stories of Adam and Eve, the introduction of sin, the redeeming birth of Jesus Christ, and the promise that light has already won over darkness in our world.
The Bright Light and the Super Scary Darkness is a great book for kids between two and 10 years old, reaching a potentially wide range of young readers and their parents with a timeless and truthful story told in a way young readers will want to turn its pages again and again.

Happy are those who respect the Lord and obey him. You will enjoy what you work for, and you will be blessed with good things. Psalm 128: 1-2
This is a cute children's book that applies the Biblical imagery of light and darkness to the scenario of a child being afraid of the dark. DeWitt traces the theme of light and darkness from the Creation story in Genesis 1 to Jesus's resurrection. He uses repetitive language linking the weird noises a child may hear in the dark to the darkness throughout various Bible stories. Ultimately, we know that light overcomes the darkness, and this book can help Christian parents communicate that to their children.
Children are scared of the dark and this crazy world is just as scary, but The Bright Light and the Super Scary Darkness is an encouraging book to remind them of the truth. The dark is frightening, but Jesus is the light of the world and God defeats the darkness. A powerful reminder for kids and adults alike. The book recalls Bible stories with illustrations that are colorful and adorable. A great read for those tough nights when the children can’t fall asleep.
I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher for my honest review. Thank you B&H Kids! #netgalley #TheBrightLightandtheSuperScaryDarkness
This book is precious! I love that it tackles two big things my little guy needs - 1. addressing his fear of the darkness and 2. tying that to the Bible and giving him hope in Jesus to conquer the darkness so he doesn't have to be afraid. The illustrations are very sweet and do a great job illustrating light vs. dark in a creative way. The sound words like "spurt" throughout the book are wonderful to keep my wild little three year old engaged with the story and also to keep him giggling throughout. I look forward to purchasing this book for my little guy. Thank you to NetGalley and B&H for the opportunity to preview this sweet story in exchange for an honest review! I would definitely recommend this one to a friend.
I am in love with the artwork! And yes, I am so going to look up for the rest of the work of the artist. This story book is giving me all the graphic novel vibes as well as good animation feels. Yes, the illustrations are quite remarkable!
I love the concept of this story. When children are afraid of the dark, we can reassure them that as much as there's darkness everywhere we can still believe in the light that would fight away our fear of the dark.
I find the writing quite reassuring and relevant.
Thank you authors and the publisher for the advance reading copy.
What a book that surprised me. It surprised me because it wasn’t what I was expecting. I had to check the title because I wondered if I was reading an Advent book or something!
This book took light and darkness and compared it to light being the good in thai world and darkness a result of sin. The book started in the beginning and walked us through several key bible stories that pointed and foreshadowed the birth of Jesus. Jesus being the light that comes into the world. From there, the author moves to talk about Jesus and how each one of us can have the light inside of us.
What a wonderful way to talk about light and darkness and touch on the Hope of the world and light of the world.
This is a great kids book. Might need some simplified versions for kids in the 3-4year old range. The pictures are nice and not too babyish. I think my 9 year old would also enjoy this book.
I received an ARC from Netgalley for the sole purpose of writing honest review.
Jesus came to defeat the darkness and bring people true joy. But many people still loved the darkness more than the bright light. And the world grew even darker.
The darkness and the light are contrasting world views and something children may not understand. They do understand that the darkness can be scary place. The unknown. Knowing that the light can overcome the darkness will give children hope and understanding of the mission of Jesus. A mission that we are on as well.
The contrasting illustrations and words offer hope and understanding. Highly recommend!
A Special thank you to B&H Kids and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
This is not what I was expecting but actually a really lovely way to teach about the birth of Jesus. Will definitely be on the lookout for this book when I’m teaching about advent next year. I think the children will enjoy it and like the images too.
I received this from Netgalley.com.
"With an emphasis on Jesus, the Light of the World, this book reassures children ages 4-8 who struggle with fear and anxiety and offers them courage from God’s Word."
Wonderful, lovely colorful pictures and age appropriate language showing children to trust in their creator when they are afraid.

The Bright Light and the Super Scary Darkness
by Dan DeWitt
Back of the Book: “Have you ever been super scared of the dark? The Bright Light and the Super Scary Darkness uses the imagery of darkness and light to help children understand God’s power over evil. With an emphasis on Jesus, the Light of the World, this book reassures children ages 4-8 who struggle with fear and anxiety and offers them courage from God’s Word. Kids will find comfort in the book’s reassuring tone and brilliant illustrations, which show that Jesus’ love is strong enough to defeat even the super scary darkness.”
Impressions: This is a charming read for any parent wanting to introduce God’s word to a child with fears of the dark. This would be a really fun book to purchase as a gift with a special nightlight.
Liked: I really thought this was a cute book. Ironically, I had this chat with my 5-year-old last week and could have used this book then! I also want to add that the pictures were perfect and translated well by reading on my iPad. When talking with my son we discussed how the Holy Spirit becomes light in us when we ask Jesus into our hearts and lives (Matthew 5:14-16, Luke 8:16, Ephesians 5:8).
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review shared here.
This was a cute book about the power of light to overcome darkness. The Bible references make it appealing to some, not others. Something to be aware of if you’re buying!
I liked the images in this story.
The book was well written and easy to follow and it picked out a few bits from the Bible to show the power of light, over darkness.
It is 4 stars from me for this one - highly recommended!
"The prophets pointed to Him. The poets sang about Him. The people couldn't wait to meet Him. But after years and years, the light still hadn't come into the world . . . It seemed like the light was definitely winning."
I can't think of a better year to release The Bright Light and the Super Scary Darkness. I know this book is for kids, but all the adults I know need this reminder, too: "Jesus is the bright light that defeats the scaredy-cat darkness!" Amen!
I really enjoyed this gospel-centered children's book on fear and will definitely purchase a hard copy for my children. I loved how this book modeled taking our thoughts and feelings captive then measuring them against the truth of God's word. I think it's a very developmentally appropriate but powerful book for kids learning how to do this. My only complaint was wanting slightly more length and depth, but that's probably because my own children are a little older and ready for that. I'd recommend this for children ages 3-6.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
The Bright light and the Supee Scary Darkness is a beautifully illustrated and scripted children's book for children who are scared of darkness or the night. The book explains through biblical tales how darkness is really the one afraid of the light and how light is the good things in the world and how if we trust in the light (good) things are much better.
This is a great book for Christian children regardless of if they are scared of the night or darkness.
