Play with fire and you’ll get burned . . .
Who can you trust in this brand new edge-of-your-seat thriller.
A tired old seaside town hiding a series of unsolved arson attacks.
A derelict mansion in the woods with a long-buried secret.
A bundle of old love letters that mask a dark story.
When Jamie's documentary investigation gets too close to uncovering the truth behind a series of deadly arson attacks that tormented Abbeywick in the 1980s, her family might be the ones who pay the price.
But for her younger sister Cleo, the secrets Jamie uncovers have the potential to get exactly what Cleo wants: to remove her mum's toxic new husband from their lives, forever.
All it takes is one spark to send everything up in smoke
When each character is hiding secrets and has motives for arson, it's impossible to figure out who lit the match. Rosie Walker took a dysfunctional family and set it on fire!
This is a well written thriller. The writing style is very fast paced. This book kept my attention throughout.
I really enjoyed this book
With the arsonist closer to home than Jamie could ever imagine and watching her every move the closer Jamie gets to solving working out who was behind the attacks the more danger she and her family come into. Recently local arsonist attacks have also started to reoccur. With more attacks happening Jamie begins to wonder whether the arsonist has returned or whether they have a copy cat on their hands.
An intense thriller that kept me gripped. Coercive and controlling behaviours make this a shocking read and leave you wanting to shout at the pages. An gripping read!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my digital copy in exchange for an honest review. When I requested this book, I really liked the cover and I was kind of in a thriller phase...by the time I actually read it, that phase was over so I was not quite as lenient with things that might drive me crazy about a book. This one was pretty much a struggle most of the way through for me...I didn't really connect with any of the characters and the story seemed a little tired for me until I got closer to the end. As I can see I am clearly in the minority here, I would still recommend the book to others...anyone who likes thriller anyway :)
Enjoyed this read. Engaging characters and an interesting plot with some good twists. I am new to the author but I will definitely look out for more from them based on this.
Thank you Harper Collins and NetGalley and sorry I took so long to read.
A good storyline and characters but I struggled a bit with the different viewpoints
A bit of a slow psychological thriller. Picks up after a few chapters. Jamie and her boyfriend are documentary filmmakers investigating a series of arsons from the 1980s. Suddenly new fires suddenly start happening again they wonder if the new fires are a coincidence, or are they linked to the same unsolved ones. Jamie and her younger sister Cleo have a new stepfather Ant who they think is a bit much for their mom who is controlled by him. Could all of the fires and the changes in their family be a coincidence or is it somehow related to the change in their situation. Thanks NetGalley and the publisher for the advance ecopy.
This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a good thriller!!
Absolutely loved the characters, the plot, the tension - impossible to put it down.
Certainly recommended!
Thank you for providing me with an advance review copy of this book. Enjoyed reading, would recommend....
I enjoyed reading this, characters were very believable and I loved the storyline. Gripping, interesting and recommended
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion
This is told from three viewpoints and one is the arsonist. A fantastic twist that you won’t see coming so just read it and enjoy. It’s tense and it’s exciting. Very strong 4/5.
Chloe is a troubled young girl who feels nobody listens to her. She believes her step-dad is abusive towards her mother but his charming ways in front of others means nobody believes her. She finds a burnt out cottage in the middle of the woods and goes there regularly to hide away.
Her sister Jamie is an up and coming journalist who is making a documentary about a series of fires in the area during the 80's. When her step-dad offers to buy the equipment and help fund the project, she is ecstatic.
As her investigations continue, more fires suddenly start again and her step-dad tries to move the documentary to the current fires rather than the historical ones.
Things take a darker turn the more her investigation turns up and Chloe's suspicions are getting worse. What will the truth reveal and what repercussions will it have on the family?
A tale full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing right to the end.
I found this one really hard to get into. It just seemed to drag on and on and the cohesive behaviour was alarming. Will give 3 stars@TheHouseFire@NetGalley.
The House Fire is a domestic thriller with mystery aspects to it. The opening of the story and the unreliable narration really manipulated my thoughts on what was happening.
The theme of Coercive Control is really imbedded into this story, not just on the characters but to some element onto the reader too which is incredibly clever!
The ending definitely was not what I expected and I think how it was left definitely could lead the way to novellas on those specific characters.
I’m a little on the fence with The House Fire. I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it either. Overall I enjoyed the premise (minus the animal cruelty - big no no for me!) but it just took so long to get to the whodunnit aspect. Because of this the book became a bit of a chore - I needed more suspense. I guessed a lot of what happened throughout the story but the final chapter blew some of my theories apart. I enjoyed the twist.
Although marketed as a thriller I would say it was more domestic noir - cohesive control and behaviour is a key element. I found that the author wrote the character of Ant really well and his abusive traits were believable.
An ok read but not likely to stay with me long term.
i never got to read this but i was really looking forward to reading this but it is now artchived and i never got to download it to the correct device
This book was everything I look for in a book. It was so exciting. The plot was fantastic. It really had me on the edge of my seat, and my heart racing. It was very well written and flowed well.
I found it hard to get into at first as it was repeating itself. Luckily it got better and I ended up enjoying it. It was interesting that it a was more of a domestic drama than a thriller.
