This book started off really slow and I didn't think I was going to like it...also both main characters were such whiny bitches, they got on my last nerve and I hated them both. But then a little more than a third of the way in things started to get wickedly good and so began a game of cat and mouse...but who's the cat and who's the mouse? And what about all those crocodile tears?
The twists and turns, the lies and deceptions, are trademarks of a good thriller and this has it in spades. Very few authors draw can me into a book but the suspense, mystery and the psychological mind games were pretty awesome in this one. The author had so many false trails that there was no way I could guess what was really going on. Careful what you wish for because things can go horribly wrong.
This was an absolutely bizarre suspense thriller that kept me guessing, I was going back and forth and back again and then the big twist. This was a slow burner that had me invested towards the end and is a quick read for sure. The characters aren’t particularly likable because they are so devious, but the plot is sure to compel you to keep reading to the surprise ending.
Thrillers about friendships are always something I am eager to read, and this
story did not disappoint!
Both characters are very well written and have depth to them, which makes it even more enjoyable.
Another favorite by a great author. The plot of the story was very well written. The author really draws the reader in as you read. I felt like I was an unnamed character in the story.
I received this eBook on @netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a great Domestic Thriller, I found it quite gripping and read it over 2 sittings.
It is written from the dual perspectives of Susannah and Charlotte and although the story and ending was pretty obvious, I really enjoyed it.
Having said that, I did think at a few points that I might have been wrong as i felt it eluded to a different person...
I would definitely recommend it!
The Best of Friends by Alex Day is a unique read with a second person narrative style that honestly took a bit of getting used to.
Susannah is new to the village, focused on rebuilding her life, and Charlotte has everything she doesn't, yet the two become fast friends. It seems delightful - the kids are friends, Susannah adds a new vibrancy to the community, and Charlotte has all the connections to really living local life. But as with everything else in life, if it sounds too good to be true, it is.
Charlotte has a secret, one that has her on edge every time the phone rings, and one that she can't tell her husband of 25years.
Susannah seems to be rebuilding because of her divorce, but that's not the only part of her past she is running from, one that seems determined to catch up to her and be broadcast of the BBC for all to see.
Who's past will catch up with them first? How will this budding new friendship survive the pressure of a life and death situation?
Overall - unusual style, decently written, and slightly twisted which out-weight the predictable twists. Worth a read, but will take a bit of work to keep the perspectives straight and adapt to the unusual style.
I'm not sure how I felt about this book. It was easy to read but the first half of the book felt very long and dragged out. I liked the way the tension was built and how we didn't know the true story until the end. Overall, I enjoyed this book and it kept me hooked until the end despite the first half not being as gripping as I would have liked.
Not for me and I’m afraid I skipped to the end as I found it a bit tedious. I think it may have been that I was expecting more of a thriller than the drama it seemed.
A bit of a predictable book. But some twists. Susannah and her children relocate to start a new life after a divorce. Charlotte and Dan are married with children and seem to be the envy of everyone. Two totally different women but have one thing in common. They are both running from a secret. Susannah and Charlotte become friends, she enjoys spending time with them both and enjoys admiring Dan's good looks. The two women try to keep their secrets lost but secrets always have a way of becoming exposed.
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the advance ecopy.
Overall a good well written book although for me it wasn't a page turner and parts of it, for me personally, were a bit boring and dull.
Thank you to Netgalley and Harper Collins OMC for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
Thank you NetGalley, author Alex Day, and One More Chapter for giving a free arc of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
2.75 stars
This book had a great premise, which is what drew me to want to read this book in the first place. The chapters switched between the two main characters' povs. This made the pacing and writing a little awkward at times. The characters were not overly developed nor complex. Each of the characters had their own secrets and very unlikeable personalities. The storyline was less mystery/ thriller and more women's fiction/ drama. This book was a quick read and predictable. It read a lot like a Lifetime movie! The ending was pretty much how I thought it was going to end. Overall, I would like to read more books by this author in the future.
Another book about friendship, affairs and murder. It was hard to relate to either of these women and the storyline was boring but built up to a decent ending if you can get there.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC
The Best of Friends was a slow burn that was more a domestic drama than a psychological thriller. It had unlikeable characters and predictable storyline which was a bit disappointing. With all the action happening very close to the end it felt like a small reward for wading through the rest of the story. Not one that grabs you instantly but when everything happened it was quite intense and kept you interested. Not all good but not all bad either, a great weekend read.
This was a decent, fast paced thriller. It was well written, with great character development, making it quite easy to read and finish. It had a few good twists and turns, some fun thrills, a bit of chills, and a shock or two. I found it to be easy, but not mind blowing. I think most who are looking for something quick and easy to read, but still a bit thrilling, will definitely enjoy this one! Do recommend this solid 3-4 star read!
Fickle friends or devious friends? Charlotte and Susannah are supposedly best friends. But who needs enemies when you have a friend like either one of them? It’s a deliciously evil read with betrayal, deception, fakery, and mayhem. Except one is just a bit smarter than the other and triumphs with better stealth and planning. I am usually more surprised about what people haven’t done than what they have done. Both women are reprehensible for what they do and premeditate. Be careful of who you let into your world because she just might be trying to take it over.
Meet Susannah and Charlotte. Susannah is new in town, after recently divorcing her husband Justin. She quickly becomes friends with Charlotte and they becomes best friends. Their children are friends, and they spend a lot of time together. But one of them has a dark past and has her share of secrets.
I enjoyed reading the alternate POV's of Charlotte and Susannah. It adds to their character development and gives us a true sense of who they are, and what they have been through in life to make them the person they are today. There are lots of twists and turns, and shocking revelations. What better than a novel that is full of shocks, lies, secrets, betrayals, and deceit. This book has it all and will have you flipping through the chapters.
The writing was good and the characters were likeable and interesting but it didn't suck me in like I was hoping it would. Would definitely give this author another go though
This book really wasn’t for me. I found it really predictable and the characters really unlikeable. It sounded like the kindness of book that I would enjoy but I figured out the story pretty early on and I was right.
Thanks to the publisher for my advanced copy of this book to read. Sorry I didn’t enjoy it.
Enjoyed the plot. There were secrets in the lives of the characters and a twist at the end which surprised me.
Susannah moves with her two children to a small village. Here she befriends Charlotte, who seems to have the perfect life. Their children become friends, and the two families soon become close. But their rosy lives are actually a smoke screen for secrets, lies and betrayals.
Book started out slow, but had am unexpected ending.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Susannah and her children move to a sleepy village following her divorce where she befriends Charlotte. Charlotte has everything Susannah doesn’t, a large house, plenty of money and a handsome husband. But is everything in Charlotte’s life as rosy as it seems? This is a tale of secrets, lies and betrayal. I found the plot to quite slow going at first but I was glad I stuck with it and would rate this book 3.5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley, Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter and the author for the chance to review.
I enjoyed this book but felt a lot of the time not a lot was really happening. It tells of Susannah and her two sons moving into the village after her messy divorce. While at a paper chase with her sons she meets up with Charlotte. Charlotte also has two boys who immediately become friends as do Charlotte and Susannah.
When Susannah meets charlottes husband Dan there is an instant bond over their love of tennis.
This becomes a regular thing they enjoy together and they become friends.
There are obviously secrets in both Charlotte and susannah’s past which are kept hidden until a good way through the book. This did keep me guessing but wasn’t a huge surprise when it came out. Although there was a dark twist towards the end that I didn’t see coming.
I would read another by Alex Day as it was a good read.
Thank you HarperCollins UK and NetGalley for the early copy.
