This was the first book I've read by this author but my goodness it won't be the last! I was hooked straight away and couldn't put the book down! I did work out part of this - I figured out who the murderer had to be because of the DNA but not who they turned out to be in the story. Brilliant characters. Amazing plot. Would highly recommend and will be reading more from Helen in the future!
This is the second book in a series following Detective Morgan Brookes. This new detective has had a rough start to her role and this seems set to continue after discovering a connection to a brutal murder of a young woman in her own home.
I accidently read this not realising it was the second book in the series but it didn't overly affect the reading experience. The plot was decent enough, interesting enough to keep me turning the page. I figured out what was going on fairly quickly but that didn't bother me too much. My gripes were in relation to the characters; their development and interactions. I don't feel like the characters had much depth to them and their interactions with each other were quite superficial. Morgan herself just seemed a bit pitiful for a female lead. At every discovery she was 'gasping' or sickened by the horror of human depravity and I couldn't help but feel like she wasn't really cut out for a job in homicide. I prefer my female leads to have a bit more backbone to them and she just felt weak to me. Potential in the series going forward if the characters get a bit more to them but not something I will be rushing to continue.

This was the second book in the series but can easily be read as a stand-alone as I haven’t read the first one. I will be going back to it after enjoying this one. I thought the writing style was very good and the plot had a lot of drama and intrigue which kept me gripped
The second book in the Morgan Brookes series, and this is fast becoming one of my favourites. Still recovering from her last ordeal, Morgan is pulled in to deal with the death of a young girl around her own age, brutally murdered whilst her parents were away on holiday.
Running along side the police side of things, we see Morgan exploring the reasons for the terrible nightmares she has but can’t remember, and her slowly building her relationship back up with her father Stan.
Then events unfold, leading to tragedy and shock for the whole community.
Whilst I had kind of worked out what was going to happen, there were still loads of twists that left me speechless.
The Killer's Girl look me to another level. Detective Morgan Brookes and her boss and friend Detective Sergeant Ben Matthews made a great team, trying to find out who the brutal killer was. I was shaking with excitement, especially towards the end, wondering if Morgan would find the killer before he found her.
If you like a nail- biting thriller I would definitely recommend this book.
The Killer's Girl Helen Phifer
This is the first book I've read by this author, and I can't wait for more. This is the second book in the series but read perfectly as a standalone.
I really liked Morgan as a character, and felt myself rooting for her. At times you knew what was coming, yet still felt shocked when it happened.
I look forward to more from this author.
I'm a fan of Helen Phifer's writing and she's been one to watch in recent years for me. I like the characters in the Detective Morgan Brookes series and enjoyed the first book. However this one slightly missed the mark for me and didn't live up to my expectations. It was an average read but I did notice a few inconsistencies that pulled me up short. I also felt that there wasn't actually much police work involved and this resulted in the ending being slightly anticlimactic.
Spoilers ahead -
I was disappointed with how information was found out, especially the part where Morgan found out she was adopted from a small part in the newspaper which I felt was slightly confusing and disjointed. Every critical part of information felt like it was fallen across luckily or felt so obvious that it should have been known about way before this point. The whole adoption thing, Dan and Morgan being siblings just didn't feel entirely plausible. There was no big reveals and it just felt like even the characters at times were following a script, it didn't all feel natural or have a solid train of thought that led to a particular outcome or action.
All in all, it was an OK read but not what I've come to expect from Helen, I'm hoping the next in the series will be more to my tastes.
I had such high hopes for this book and it all just felt so far fetched starting with her being a 23 year old detective - just seemed soooo young. I thought the characters had some pretty good development but would have liked to see more about Issac to help build the story that he could potentially be the killer rather than Dan.
This book was great. There were a few places that were quite predictable but the little twist close to the end where the pieces really start to fall into place was great. I would definitely recommend this series to a friend and can't wait to keep going with this series.
On finishing the first book in the series I immediately started this one. Again I read it in one sitting.
Morgan Brookes’ life seemed messed up before, but this book takes it to a whole new level.
Brilliantly written, can’t wait to see what happens next.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing a copy.
This book is part of a series but can easily be read as a stand alone. It was well written and had me turning the pages . The ending was totally unexpected . It was a fast paced book and the twists kept coming
Wow 😯 what a great read. A gripping read which had you hooked from start to finish with great twists and turns along the way. A great addition to the series
An excellent storyline, I was totally engrossed from the first chapter. Detective Morgan Brookes is investigating a brutal murder but DNA found at the scene is linked to a killer already behind bars. When the DNA also shows a close match to Morgan herself her world is in turmoil. What is her connection to the killing? Finding out will put her in deadly danger. Really looking forward to the next in the series.
I absolutely love this series. I can't help but still find it funny that Morgan Brooks is a detective so quickly but I suppose that adds to the story.
The killers girl starts in the late 90s with a brutal murder. When we skip to present day Morgan and Ben find themselves at a brutal crime scene of a woman who was raped and murdered in her bed. There's a bug problem though as the DNA found at the scene is linked to the case from the 90s they can link the DNA the only problem is he's in prison. Then things start to get strange when it looks like however is doing the copycat killings is trying to get Morgans attention whilst setting her up along along way.
I really enjoyed book two and probably is my favourite out if the three so far. We find ourselves completely engrossed into Modgans world. As more and more evidence stacks up against her its great reading how she will get herself out of rhis whole mess. Plus it really tests hers and Ben's relationship as friends when it comes to finding out where hid localities lie.
As usual Morgan is so funny as our lead. She basically goes off the books again and holds a one woman investigation, which seems better than the entire police force.
It was great in this book to read the developing relationships with colleagues and her father. Esoicallu hrr father I found that storyline quite touching and had me in tears at one point (when you read it you will understand).
We hear a bit more of Ben's narration and in all honesty I hope this will continue through the series. I still love and the still mentions of the broken window have me bent over double. I find he is a loveable character and I just want to relate to him.
The case itself gets wet ranger as we go through the investigation. It again like so many other books has a clear OMG moment that is if you have no expectations of such events occurring. However I did but I still loved every second. And then it goes from crazy to insane super quick so get ready.
Would I recommend this book yeah 100% an easy 5 stars.
I would recommend you check out the first book one left alive and the third one after this to really get a good sense of who everyone is and why. 5 stars 🌟
Absolutely brilliant.
What a wild ride.
I liked book 1 but book 2 was...explosive. What a great read. Fast paced with so many twists and turns.
I have a crush on Ben!
Diving into next book!
The Killer’s Girl is the second book in the Det. Morgan Brookes series and what an absolutely belter.
Brookes and DS Ben Matthews are perplexed and horrified when they are called to the scene of a young girl found murdered and tied to her bed. The DNA discovered gives a positive hit, however, the humdinger, it matches that to someone already behind bars, how can that be? This case puts Brookes to the forefront and makes her confront her childhood in order to find the killer, with Morgan in danger, it’s a race to the end, who will win out! Another intense rollercoaster of a ride with several twists and turns along the way, it certainly got the adrenaline pumping, I was gripped by the story and kept on the edge of this page turner for the duration. Can't wait for the next one!
Reading Between the Wines book review #51/115 for 2021:
Rating: 4 🍷 🍷 🍷 🍷
Book 📱: The Killer’s Girl (Detective Morgan Brookes Book 2)
Author: Helen Phifer
Genre: Mystery & Thrillers
RELEASED on December 10, 2020!!!
Recommended to readers who like police procedure books and series with a strong female protagonist.
Sipping thoughts: Morgan Brookes returns with another book where she goes all in to find a new serial killer in her town. This time it is hitting closer to home than she realizes. I am so invested in Morgan’s story and loved the path her storyline is taking. I predicted the killer literally from the first chapter or 2 and could not wait for it to be revealed. The epilogue had me holding my breath and I cannot wait for the 3rd book to come out in June. I am so thankful for the ARC of the 3rd installment-The Hiding Place. If you haven’t read the Brookes series-I would advise you to start with One Left Alive.
Cheers and thank you to @NetGalley, @Bookouture, and @helenphifer for an advanced copy of @TheKillersGirl

This is well written, an excellent addition to the first book. The characters are deftly drawn and work amid the swirling twists and turns that keep the reader glued to the pages. The conclusion is unexpected and violent.
An excellent second book in this series!
It's a gripping and highly entertaining story that kept me hooked till the end.
The characters are well developed and I was happy to catch up with them. The plot is tightly knitted and fast paced.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
The Killer's Girl is the second installment in the "Detective Morgan Brookes" crime thriller series. I was looking forward to reading this one as the first one blew my mind. That being said, I was not disappointed in the least. I really like Morgan, I like growing with her as a Detective and as a person. I mean she's got like the worst luck ever but still it makes for a great storyline!!
