How well do you know your best friends? That's the question that Claire has to ask herself when she wakes up in the woods with a head injury and no memory of what happened to the friends she'd gone camping with. Things are made even worse because one of her friends is the daughter of a retired politician, meaning that that national media are all over the case. Was there an accident? A murder/suicide? A kidnapping? Did it have something to do with dealing drugs? Did Claire herself has something to do with it?
Going into this, I was expecting a standard teen thriller about a girl forced to defend her innocence. But that's not the case (in fact, it doesn't seem that Claire is considered a suspect very long at all). Instead, what I got was a twisty little read that caught me by surprise to say the least (especially that last twist). This is a dark book. The characters are all very flawed, including Claire herself. And it leaves you wondering if perhaps the most likable character in the book was actually the most twisted.
I wasn't expecting just how much this book would pull me in. Right from the start I was invested. It had a little of everything. But the twists and turns and suspense had me flipping the pages as fast as my little eyes could read haha.
This book was so good, I love this author and always find myself recommending her work. I thought I saw the twist coming but that twist at the end...I don't think anyone could have predicted that.
This book was a journey, one I was proud to go on. A group of best friends plan the prom weekend of a lifetime. They all go away to a cabin in the middle of nowhere to relax and just be with one another. But, right off the bat it’s clear things are not the same. Claire feels off and she can sense the others do too. When they take a hike up the mountain, two don’t return. So begins the race with time to find out what happened to them. The twists and turns in this one were supreme. I really thought I had it all figured out but definitely did not. This was a really great one, hence, why Kara Thomas is one of my instant buy authors! Highly recommend checking this one out!
I really enjoyed this book until the last 30 pages. The whole time I was reading, I thought it was going to be a 5 star read, but the incest storyline at the end completely turned me off. I love Kara Thomas's other books and I will continue to read everything she publishes, but sadly, this one was not for me. There was so much I loved about it until that last reveal, which felt completely unnecessary.
This is young adult fiction about a prom get away weekend. What happens to the friends and who is responsible ?
Lots of secrets and doubts about what really happened .
This book starts out right away with our main character waking up in the woods with a head trauma and not remembering anything. I love this kind of start because it means the character will be trying to put together the story as you are.
I liked that it started out in the wilderness too because I like survival stories but it didn’t last very long there. It read more like a true crime book and I was okay with that. I enjoyed most of it until the end. I think that the finale could have been done a little better and it felt a bit lack luster to me but up until you solve everything, I was immersed in the book.
The main character does go through a lot and I would be in the same position as them if I couldn’t remember what happened to me. I would stop at nothing to figure it out.
If you like a good puzzle and are a fan of books similar to Karen M. Mcmanus’ books then this one might be for you.
Three friends skip prom to go camping instead… but one wakes up alone with a head injury, the other 2 missing, and they are miles from where they were supposed to be. Claire wakes up alone not able to remember anything that happened for an entire weekend with her friends, caused by a head injury. The only problem is, her friends are missing and she’s the only one who could possibly know what happened to them.
Man!!! This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire freaking time!! I absolutely couldn’t put it down and if I did, I had to rush back to make sure I found out what happened. I had no idea about the twists at the end and that just made it a whole experience. Did I kind of think that the ending could have been a little less “scandalous”? Yeah for sure, although it did add a level of deception for every single player in on the whole thing. I’m a little mad what they did to Jesse’s character at the end but… again I can see how it fit in with the theme of you never know someone fully. Loved this so much! 4/5 stars!!!
Mystery YA books are always a favorite every year in our school library, and this one is no exception. In fact, That Weekend will be often checked out as there is the obvious mystery of what happened to her friends that weekend, but enough twists and turns that aren't necessarily obvious young adults will be enthralled to find out what happens next. There are also the fun tropes of rich vs poor, love triangles, and the dangers of powerful people. Great book to read and try to figure out.
That was one hell of a book. And to think that in the beginning I was thinking of DNFing! I'm so glad I didn't.
Thomas plots and twists and turns like you wouldn't believe it. I guessed some plot points but others completely blew my mind. This book needs to make it big - this is absolutely star BookTok material!
I have loved everything that Kara Thomas has written, including what she's written under the name Kara Taylor, so I was excited to finally get into That Weekend.
This book has a very unreliable narrator feeling to it, and I'm all for it.
There were so many elements to follow along with, and when you finally think you have something figured out . . . something else happened, and it gets deeper and deeper. I was edge of my seat intrigued and invested. So many twists and turns, and couldn't stop reading. I was "omg, seriously?" the entire time.
Without spoiling anything, there were a few things towards the end that I didn't really agree with how it was played out and it almost felt a little rushed and forced. However, I can't really complain because the book itself was well done and enjoyable. I'll let it slide.
I’m loving the current trend of backwoods horror in YA thrillers! Kara Thomas does it again with another great mystery with a compelling but confused protagonist. If you students are into Jessica Goodman, Karen McManus or Mindy McGinnis definitely recommend this one!
A great mystery that had me on the edge of my seat till the very end. If you are looking for a story that depicts teenagers in a true and dark light, this is the story for you.
4.5 Stars*
This mystery/thriller blew me away! I did receive an E-Arc of this book last year through Net Galley, but I did not get around to reading it until this year, and boy am I sorry that it took me so long to pick up! This story follows Claire after she is found alone in the woods with a severe head injury, and no memory of the last 36 hours. She was supposed to be staying at her best friend's grandmother's cabin with her best friend, Kat, and Kat's boyfriend and Claire's former crush, Jesse. The trio decided to ditch prom and have a weekend bounding, just the three of them before they all head to college and everything changes. Now Kat and Jesse are missing without a trace, and Claire cannot remember how she even got to the woods.
This story is told in dual timelines, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I really liked seeing how the details of the past became relevant to the crime that was committed in the present. This book is filled with twists and turns, most of which I did not see coming. There is a final twist revealed at the very end that will be very polarizing for readers, and personally I thought it did not add enough to the story to need to be included. However, it did not hinder my enjoyment of the overall story. I do wish we got to see a little bit more after the resolution, so I could feel more closure with the characters. Overall, this is an AMAZING novel and I infinitely recommend!
Thomas has a tendency to create a slow moving story in the beginning before the action actually begins. I usually have a difficult time reading any sort of slow-burn book, but knowing this about Thomas, I pushed through and was not disappointed. She builds the story before the action begins and those building blocks come back into the story at a later time. The ending is insane and I will definitely be recommending this book I couldn't put down!
I really enjoy Kara's thrillers, and this was another win for me! I loved the eeriness and it definitely lead to a satisfying conclusion.
Three best friends (love triangle alert?) spend prom weekend in a mountain cabin and camping. Only one of the friends returns, but Claire remembers NOTHING about the weekend. Family secrets and narrative twists and turns abound. Just know that I didn’t see ANY of that coming. That Weekend by Kara Thomas is the perfect Summer Read to start the season.

Sipping thoughts: Easy read. Pretty cool mystery. Easy to figure out most of what happened in my opinion. I didn't really care for the ending. I wanted it tied up a little cleaner but enjoyed it all the same.
Cheers and thank you to @NetGalley and @RandomHouseChildrens for an advanced copy of @ThatWeekend.

Didn't capture my attention and engagement. Interested in trying it again though and hopefully it will take.
Kara Thomas always comes through with a story that keeps me guessing. I was engaged with this story right up to the end.
