I get so annoyed when something happens in the last 2% of the book that changes the way I perceive everything prior. So. Here we are.

I will not be giving anything away in this by saying wow. I am not sure how to feel about this book. On so many levels its a story of trust and the lack of it. How we can step over the edge without thinking about everything we can damage. What a great twisty read!
4.5 stars!
The plot twist queen is BACK. One of the biggest reasons that I love Kara Thomas’ writing so much is because of her ability to surprise. When you think you know how the book ends, she throws twist after twist at you - forbidding her reader from guessing at her true intentions. I love this about her books.
With the mountain setting and the attempt to unravel forgotten events that led to the disappearances of Claire’s friends, I felt like I was involved in an episode of Dateline or 48 Hours and as someone who devours true crime shows, this book was a fun and twisty adventure.
The only downside is that I begged for a little more information regarding Claire’s outcome by the end. I wanted a flash forward to see how the overall situation resolved and what ends up happening to the characters that make it to the end. I understand why Thomas ended where she did, but I’ll always want more.
Again, I applaud Thomas’ ability to surprise me every time. Reading her books is always a true pleasure and a hell of a wild ride.
Thank you to @netgalley and @randomhousechildrens for this ARC!
The first thought I have is simply: dang.
This book was really a wild ride. There’s like, basically nothing I can say that isn’t a spoiler, but it definitely took turns I wasn’t expecting. Were one or two of them gratuitous? Meh, maybe lol. But it was the stay up all night, read in one sitting, forget about the stuff that’s bothering you kind of ride that I’m really grateful for right now.
We begin with our sweet friend Claire waking up in the wilderness and being taken to the hospital. She has literally no memory of what happened to get her there until it hits her: her friends Jesse and Kate were with her when she went out there, and they didn’t come back with her. What ensues is a pretty typical amnesia-type thriller, one of the ones where the main girl is absurdly tricky at finding evidence that the FBI somehow missed. You know. Such a well-used trope but still somehow gets me roped in every time.
Well, the typical thriller doesn’t stay typical. One of the reveals was one that made me put the book down for a second, and one of them was a reveal that made one of the characters have to pull over to the side of the road and vomit. It’s one of those stories where even if you guess some of the ending you’d have to be a psychic to call it all.
Some of the things that happen in this story are so very adult-like while still being obviously teenaged. I feel like that’s authentic of teens: they think they’re grown, their families think they’re kids, and the world treats them like some weird in between. Too old to be coddled, too young to understand how taxes work. I just appreciate the way those parts were written.
I’ve read every single one of Kara Thomas’s books now and I think they’ve all been really well done in their own ways. There’s always plenty of characters so the ending isn’t obvious, but not too many that it’s apparent that they were only added as red herrings. I mean, over the course of the story I suspected like 8 people, all with decent enough reason, and still didn’t fully call the who and especially not the why.
Romance has a part in this book, not a huge one, but it is the catalyst for a few different things. And I really liked Claire’s connection with like, everyone she was interested in romantically. Maybe some of those came back to bite me? I won’t say, but I suspected them all at one point or another.
This was a fun read and I really think if you’re looking for a YA thriller that’s not wack, I think you wouldn’t go wrong with any of Kara Thomas’s works.
Another great addition to the young adult genre from Kara Thomas. If you loved "The Cheerleaders", you may find yourself loving this one even more! Thankful to NetGalley for providing me a copy to read.
Claire, Kat, and Jesse go away for the weekend to spend time at Kat’s family cabin. At the end of the weekend, Claire is found without a memory of the past 48-hours and Kat and Jesse are missing. Twists and turns fill this latest novel by Kara Thomas. It’s shockingly magnificent. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to be an early reader in exchange for my review.
This is a story about friendships and how many lives can change because of one weekend
I really enjoyed The Cheerleaders, so I was excited when I saw the author had a new book on the way. This didn’t disappoint! This was a twisty little story, full of people who aren’t what they seem & characters I both empathized with and despised. There was one twist towards the end that I didn’t love, but for the most part I thought this was a really enjoyable, well crafted mystery.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you so much @netgalley & @randomhousechildrens for this eARC!
That Weekend is a great mystery and I was hooked from the start. As soon as I started reading I had to find out what happened to Kat and Jesse. Was Claire responsible for their disappearance!!!????? This was the first book I read by Kara Thomas and I can't wait to read her other ones.
