When I saw that Kara Thomas had a new thriller on the way, I had to immediately request it because she just has a way with thrillers and she keeps you guessing.
Kara Thomas definitely has the ability to keep a reader on the edge of their seat. I really enjoyed this book and almost stayed up way too late reading it on two separate occasions. The characters were interesting and I liked that the twists were slowly revealed throughout most of the book, with little hints along the way that I caught and they did end up important at the end.
However, the last 15% or so almost got a bit too crazy with the reveals and twists.
Kara Thomas did it again! I’ve enjoyed all of the other books written by her and this, That Weekend did not disappoint! The book twists and turns are unexpected and promising. Every chapter explains a lot of things that the readers will surely look out for. This book is surely hard to put down, all I wanted was to continue reading and know what really happened during that weekend.
Waking up in the middle of nowhere and not remembering any thing that happened before is scary right? You are not sure of your past, your identity and you feel helpless at all (if that’s me, I’m not sure if I will believe all the people around me too). This is what happened to Claire, she has been clueless of all the memories except that last Friday night. Claire was worried with her friends missing, or they might be dead. Who knows, that’s for the readers to find out. I will not spoil it (or at least, try not to). Claire for me is a good person who is in love at the same man that her bestfriend is in a relationship with, Jesse. This guy, (Jesse) is somehow a lost person who is madly in love with Kat. He will do anything for her (I mean it, ANYTHING; I think, that’s crazy though). Kat, she’s a rich girl with controlling family, she’s not happy at how things work and she can’t the things she wanted, she’s a nice person and a good friend to Claire. The story of the book basically revolves around these three (3) characters and it’s insane on how the events of the story patches at the end. Everyone had a reason for doing things I suppose.
As a blogger, I’ll recommend this book to all other readers and to my friends. The book is exciting and promising. I am confident that you all will enjoy it as much as you enjoyed the other books. I can’t wait to have my physical copy soon! I’ll buy it once it’s available in our local book stores.
That Weekend, has been a great book to get away from my reading slump too! I think, most of you all will agree with me. Better start reading that book if you haven’t yet.. *winks*
This is one of those books that you have to sit back and decide what you think about it........at least I did. This book kept me guessing, the narrator is unreliable simply because she can't remember what happened. I understood all the decisions the "characters" made in the end, but this definitely doesn't leave you with a good taste in your mouth, how could it?
Maybe they got what they deserved...I don't know? I will let you decide.
This book was all over the place. It was soooo slow through more than half of the book. Then all of a sudden, it seems to catch a second wind, but it goes to places I would've never guessed. I can't say I hated the book, but it definitely wasn't a favorite for me. 2.5 stars
A good mystery, page turning and unpredictable. Some situations a bit if a stretch but still a good read. Highly addictive and recommended. Good for teens.
Two high school sweethearts and their recently-single bestie spend a secret prom weekend at the family lake house. What could go horribly, terribly wrong? Get ready for a twist you totally expected and one you definitely didn't want or ask for in this compulsively readable thriller from the author of The Cheerleaders.
WHY DID I LISTEN TO THAT WEEKEND BY KARA THOMAS?
That Weekend by Kara Thomas appealed to me because as I was transitioning from summer to fall, I wanted books that would put me in a spooky state of mind. While That Weekend does not have a ghost story, it does have a thriller sort of element. So, the seasonal associations were there. Also, I do enjoy listening to thrillers via audio — I find them really easy to follow along with.
WHAT’S THE STORY HERE?
Kara Thomas’s That Weekend is about Claire who went partying during prom weekend with her friends at a cabin in the Catskills. She comes back but Kat and Jesse do not. As it turns out, Claire can’t remember what happened. She wants desperately to know what happened that weekend more than anyone else. She misses her best friend. Also, turns out Claire might come under suspicion. As it is, Claire eventually will learn that her best friends had secrets that will change her perception of them.
WHAT DID I THINK OF THAT WEEKEND BY KARA THOMAS?
Well, That Weekend has quite the twist. Not only was Claire’s perception altered, but so was mine. I thought I knew things about certain characters, but I was wrong. And then this book takes things a little far. I mean, hurl a little bit far. Now, I won’t spoil you, but I will say that one twist was kind of a let down and came out of nowhere and was so disappointing and weird. It made me drop this book down to two stars. View Spoiler »
HOW’S THE NARRATION?
One thing Kara Thomas’s That Weekend had going for it was the narration. I really felt Phoebe Strole and Kristen Sieh did an excellent job with the material. Both infused their sections with character and really made this such a good listening experience. After listening to this book, I do think I will try more from Kara Thomas but with some adjusted expectations.
I just finished That Weekend 15 pages from the end I thought "Well, THAT'S a hell of a deal!"
About halfway through I was mentally comparing it to Dean Koontz's Intensity, just for the "I can't stop reading..." factor. I had begun the book thinking ho hum, more privileged kids getting into trouble, but that is NOT where it went at all. No spoilers here ;) I'm not sure if I ended up liking any of the characters very much, but my perceptions of their worlds changed quite often. Good suspense and mystery.
Thank you to NetGalley for an e-ARC of That Weekend by Kara Thomas.
That Weekend is a great YA mystery. Not much of a thriller, but it did have a quick paced plot that included twists and surprises along the way. A book that will be easy to recommend to teens!
Wow! So many twists! The characters will surprise readers as their motives and their truths seep out during this suspenseful novel! My high school students will love this new novel by Kara Thomas! I can't wait to put it in their hands!
This book really held my attention. I read it in one day. There are many twists and turns to keep you interested.
Thank you to NetGalley and Delacorte Press for a copy!
I'm a sucker for books that have something along the lines of ''Three of them went hiking, but only one came back.". It's probably one of the cheesiest lines there is, and yet it manages to catch my attention every single time.
So, obviously, I just had to read That Weekend.
It's got everything you might expect from such a thriller: the drama of young love; the (in)convenient amnesia that leaves both the reader and the main character wondering what might have happened; the set of possible villains that keeps shifting with every page.
Almost every chapter has new revelations that keep you wondering who could have done it and what actually happened. The author successfully manages to keep us guessing and thinking that we've got it right... only to discover that we actually were very wrong.
There was a point where I started to suspect what the plot twist was before it actually happened, and I felt quite proud of it. Woohoo for my detective skills!
The main character in That Weekend sometimes takes very stupid decisions, which is the main reason that I gave it three stars instead of four; it's a bit harder to connect with her when you're judging her quite harshly on what she's doing (or not doing).
Overall, it's an entertaining read, and one that won't disappoint if you're looking for a nice, but slightly predictable thriller. It's not the best one Kara Thomas has written, but still enjoyable!
If you are looking for a slower buildup to the truth book, this is the one for you. Claire goes on a weekend camping trip with her two best friends Kat and Jesse, should be fun right? Trouble is, Claire winds up being injured and wakes up with no memory. Other problem? Jesse and Kat are nowhere to be found.
This book had twists and turns that didn't happen quickly but were jaw dropping just the same. Just when I thought I knew the ending, I did not. Thanks NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read a copy, I will recommend it to my patrons for sure!
This was so good! I'm not going to spoil anything but this book is definitely worth reading. I thought it was so well written and very suspenseful, really kept me on the edge of my seat. I would highly recommend to teens and adults that enjoy young adult thrillers.
(3.5 stars)
I enjoy Kara Thomas's books so I was definitely looking forward to this one, which sounded like a good YA mystery!
While That Weekend isn't up there with my favourite of her books (Little Monsters), this was a good, twisty read. The story started out really strong for me, and I quite enjoyed trying to unravel the mystery and that this took some unexpected twists.
This one just didn't grab me more, I think because I liked the plot but didn't connect to the characters, but it was a fun read.
Twisty and scary young adult read with a twist!
On prom weekend Cara wakes up alone in the woods with no memory and her friends gone.
I do not want to spoil anything, but this is an enthralling thriller for teens.
As always, this was an entertaining read from Kara Thomas! It was plenty enthralling, and rich characters. I'm excited to see what she does with her future work!
Kat, Claire and Jesse have been friends for years, but it seems like everyone keeps secrets. On a weekend camping trip, only Claire makes it home, disheveled, hurt and with no memory of what happened on the trip. Will the truth ever be discovered as to what happened up on that mountain?
This was another great book by this author, a solid mystery/thriller that kept me guessing. I will say that while there was at least one aspect to the story that was a hot mess reveal, I think this story was less twisted than the author's previous books (you know the kind that keep you thinking about it long after you finish reading since it was dark, twisted and super shocking). This was toned down, very realistic which makes the story believable- but I will admit I missed the disturbed aspect of my favorite read of the author's, Little Monsters.
The take home message here is that I will gladly read anything by this author, I can't wait for her next book already and I highly recommend That Weekend as well as all books by the author for fans of mystery thrillers and questionable characters that may be sociopaths.
Thank you to netgalley for providing an e-galley for review. Kara Thomas has teen thrillers locked down! In "That Weekend" three friends go to a lake house instead of going to prom, but only one comes back. What happened to Jesse and Kat? In a surprising story that touches on race, income inequality and small town secrets, Claire's amnesia is small potatoes compared to the real story.
Great read! Excellent plot and twists that I didn’t see coming! Caught my attention right from the start and I’ve already recommended to numerous coworkers and customers.
