Kara Thomas writes great YA thrillers. This was fast paced and hooked me right away. Will definitely recommend to teens.
I loved this book. I really enjoy this author and she did not disappoint with this book. I liked all the twists and I really liked the MC.
I received a free copy from NetGalley. This was not how prom weekend was suppose to go and one decision means life will never be the same. Hard to say too much about this one without ruining it. Kept me entertained.
That Weekend is a suspenseful story that causes you to want to scream out loud at the characters. Reading this story was stressful because I needed to know and understand what happened with Claire, Kat and Jesse during prom weekend. Claire wakes up with no recollection of what happened - on the mountain her and her friends were suppose to be camping on - but she doesn’t even remember going there. The story spirals into Claire’s search for answers and mental break on what happened to her friends.
Lots of frustrating characters and twists that are soap opera shocking. Entertaining read if you aren’t looking for something substantial.
Kara Thomas does it again! She writes amazing (and imo) underrated contemporary YA thrillers and That Weekend is sharp and shattering. Very highly recommended.
This has an interesting structure, with multiple timelines and POVs, but the second POV isn't introduced until about 2/3 through the book. This suspenseful story has unrequited love, a bratty main character with amnesia, and more twists than a game of Twister, some that you will see coming and some, not so much. (I mean, was that one even necessary? Yikes.) Overall, that was brutal with people making tragic choices, and I was surprisingly there for it. This is my first book by this author; I'm pretty sure it won't be the last.
Claire and Kat have been best friends since they were five years old. Jesse and Claire have been friends since sixth grade, and Kat and Jesse have been dating for over a year. The weekend of prom, the friends decide to go to Kat's grandmother's lake house with Kat and Jesse arriving first and Claire and her boyfriend, Ben, meeting up with them there after prom. However, Claire and Ben have a sudden breakup so it just ends up being the three friends at the cabin. The next morning, Claire wakes up on the mountain with a head wound and no recollection of how she even got onto the mountain. She knows that she was with her friends, but that's all that she remembers. A search ensues for Kat and Jesse who are nowhere to be found. Will Claire remember what happened to herself and to her friends? Will Kat and Jesse be found alive?
The tension is palpable as you follow Claire's story. She is desperately trying to remember what happened and won't stop searching for clues regarding the disappearance of her friends. There are many twists in this novel, some that you may be able to figure out with careful reading, and others that you just won't see coming. This book was a quick read as it was easy to get sucked into the story.
Thank you to #NetGalley and #DelacortePress for an ARC of #ThatWeekend by #KaraThomas in exchange for an honest review. This was my first book by this author and I look forward to reading more. 4 stars
Claire and her two best friends travel up a mountain for an after-prom camping trip. When she wakes alone and with no memory of the past 32 hours she knows something has gone terribly wrong. With everyone wanting answers and her best friends missing Claire begins to learn just how little she knew about her best friends and how many secrets they kept from her.
This was a strong mystery and one that I did not predict the end of. Even when I started to figure out the main plot there were still lots of surprise twists and turns. As with her book The Cheerleaders, Kara Thomas uses a mystery story to look at serious topics that many teenagers deal with. In The Cheerleaders, she looked at public perception, depression, and alcoholism. In The Weekend, she takes a look at domestic abuse and depression.
Overall, this story is well written and held my attention. It was a quick and intriguing read.
Claire's - who had been unconscious - senses suddenly start becoming alert when a hiker and her dog approach on Bobcat Mountain. Claire doesn't know if she's alone, and she has a splitting headache. The woman and her dog leave to get help, and Claire begins to piece together what little she does remember: it's prom weekend, but she didn't go; she lied to her parents about being on Fire Island; and she's hurt. Arriving at Sunfish Creek Hospital in the Catskill Mountains, Claire realizes she wouldn't have hiked without friends Kat and Jesse, since Kat's grandmother has a lake house nearby. After glimpsing herself in the ER bathroom mirror, Claire wonders, "Who are you?" and "What happened to you?" Then readers are taken back three days before Clair's trip to Sunfish Creek. Told in alternating time, readers travel back and forth as Claire tries to puzzle out what happened to her and to her friends up on Bobcat Mountain.
THOUGHTS: When readers think they have another puzzle piece, the timeline switches, and this fast-paced mystery goes in another direction. Mental health, drug/alcohol abuse, and domestic violence make this thriller best suited for high school collections.
Thank you to the publisher, Penguin Teen Canada, and NetGalley for providing me with an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Claire is found injured and alone on a hiking trail with no memory of the past 48 hours. She, along with her best friends Kat and Jesse, had decided to skip prom and instead spend the weekend at Kat’s family lake house. Now her friends are missing and she has no idea when they went hiking, let alone what happened on the mountain. As the search drags on for days, then weeks, everyone is desperate for answers, and Claire most of all. But even as she tries to piece things together from what little she recalls, everyone around her seems to have secrets, and finding out the truth may be more dangerous than she realized.
While this is my first time reading a book by this author, I knew there was no way I could pass up this one after seeing the blurb. I was completely hooked within the first two chapters and with such a tense plot and engaging narration, I simply couldn’t put this down. The story alternates between past and present as Claire recovers from her injuries and tries to remember the events of that night and the following day, and I really liked this format because not only was it easy to follow, it also feels like the reader is solving the mystery right alongside Claire.
This is one of the few mysteries I’ve read that includes a time leap. It’s an unusual choice, breaking the flow of the story given the high level of suspense in the narrative, but it worked for this one. As with most novels of this genre, the plot tends to take center stage, not leaving too much time for character development, but it still did a pretty good job. Claire, as it becomes evident quite early on, is an extremely unreliable narrator, which is frustrating at times, but her determination to find out what happened to her friends, even with her missing memory months later made it an interesting read. The characters were presented in a very realistic manner and felt very authentic to how teenagers might handle being in such situations
The one thing that I felt did not really work for this book is how the story rewinds to several months before the incident and shows us Kat’s POV of the months leading up to the weekend getaway. While this was a nice way of unfolding the sequence of events, within a couple of chapters from Kat’s perspective, there was enough information to guess one big detail of what had happened, leaving only the how and why for the last quarter of the book to narrate, along with wrapping up things in present day. To give the author credit though, it was a complete shock and there was no way I could have predicted it without the change in perspective. I would have also liked a little more resolution to Claire’s side of things as it was not clearly mentioned where she ends up.
I was surprised that even after a large chunk of the mystery was given away earlier, the last couple of chapters still had a few twists in store and it made for quite the exciting finish. I certainly didn’t have any inkling as to what might be going on until the story revealed it, which in my book is a mark of an excellently woven plot. That Weekend is one of the best mysteries I’ve read in several months and it was so much better than I expected it to be! If you’re in the mood for a fast paced and exciting read, I would highly recommend this one!
Claire goes up a mountain with her two best friends, but she's the only one who comes back down. And she has no memory of what happened to Jesse and Kat on that mountain or why her memory is completely gone. Kara Thomas keeps readers guessing with tons of twists and turns that will leave readers shocked and desperate for more.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to be an early reader in exchange for my review.
Kara Thomas has done it again with another twisty turn thriller. It was a great read that kept you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Couldn’t put it down until it was finished.
Prepare to stay up all night trying to wrap your head around the unrelenting twists in this taut and vicious thriller. Completely mind-blowing!
Kara Thomas returns with another twisty thriller sure to shock readers to their core.
When three friends head out for a camping trip rather than go to prom, it seems like the perfect weekend getaway. However, when the tagline of a book is "what could go wrong?" you should plan for chaos.
Claire is recently single after catching her boyfriend, Ben, "accidentally" getting naked with her arch nemesis at a party right before prom. To save herself from the utter embarrassment of showing up alone, she third-wheels her best friends' romantic weekend camping trip instead. It's all downhill from here, folks.
The novel begins with Claire coming to consciousness completely disoriented and not knowing where she is, how she got there, or why she's covered in blood. Craft-wise, I think the first couple of chapters are rich with sensory detail and truly evoke a sense of limited cognitive awareness. This book is super visceral and that amped up the fear factor and shock value. I genuinely felt scared of and for our protagonist the entirety of the narrative.
Havng read a couple of Kara Thomas books before, I knew that nothing was what it seems, and yet I was STILL shocked by the FINAL twist!
What lengths would you go to escape your family? I thought I had the story figured out and then BAM another twist. It kept me on the edge of my seat, made me feel for the loss of a friendship and a relationship that could never be. I liked how it was told, in the second half of the novel, in two voices. Made me question how reliable the narrators were.
I waited for 3 years for this book to come out. I love Kara Thomas and was excited to read That Weekend. Like her other books, this book did not disappoint. It was full of depth, suspense, and twists just when you thought you figured it out. I highly recommend reading this.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
That Weekend was fantastic!! My husband has gotten me into more thriller/mystery movies, and this novel was right up my alley! Thomas does a fabulous of job of keeping the reader on the edge of her seat. She is an expert at weaving the twists and turns together to the high point of the story. I thought I had things figured out, but I was surprised for sure!! My readers will certainly enjoy this novel!
I have been sitting on this review for a while now. I'm so torn on what to rate it because yes I did really enjoy this book. However there was a twist at the end that made me question my feelings for the book.
The story is about Claire. She wakes up on a hiking trail wounded with no memory of the past weekend. Soon she finds out that her two friends have gone missing. Claire decides that she's going to do whatever she can to find out what happened to them. I really enjoyed Claire's determination. Later on in the book we do get another character's point of view. I was so disappointed by this character. I really didn't like them. I do have to say though I did enjoy getting both of these character's point of views. It was nice seeing how they thought of everything and just how different their opinions were.
So during this book I found myself very invested and I couldn't wait to continue reading. However once I got to the end of the book there was a big plot twist. A couple of the characters in the book knew about this and didn't do anything to stop it. I was so confused how it went on for as long as it did. I feel knowing this it really had me conflicted on my thoughts on the story. At one hand I was very invested and the other hand I just wish this part had been taken out of the book.
Overall I did enjoy this book. I wish there were things that were taken out. I also the more I thought about the story the more I wanted some things explained. There was a plot in the story that we got a little back story to but there was more that needed to be explained. I wish we got that explained to us rather than the twist ending. I will continue to read Kara books because I think she does a great job keeping me invested. I also feel she does a good job writing teenage stories. So I am excited to see what she does next.
*Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publisher for a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.*
I really enjoyed this read. It was a very twisty and a book that the turns i did not expect. I Am always a fan of anmeisa plot lines. This book also like Kara previous books really focused on morally gray characters. I also really enjoyed the various time lines we got and how this Mystery. Was def not what i expected. It had hints and elements that reminded me of I killed zoe spans. But such a solid quick read!!
This is my first book by @karathomaswrites and I was so glad that @netgalley gave it to me! I really had just seen great reviews of her work so I knew I needed to try. I loved the numerous POV and timeline this story is written with. I loved the idea of the story. I felt the book provided plenty of twists and kept you guessing. I felt bad for Claire most of the book with her failed memory of that day due to her head injury. I feel like i would be like her and unable to let go until I knew the truth. I cannot wait to read more by this author after reading this excellent book!
