Thaddeus was a very proper ex military man ,who never expected to be a Duke. Lavinia was quite the opposite and writes romance novels under a pen name. Their relationship starts with her trying to keep him away from her sister and him really not liking her. They end up in a compromising position and have to marry.
I like how things begin with them and even like how things aren't automatically perfect in the bedroom. It's nice seeing a heroine asserting herself and teaching the hero how to pleasure her.
The problem with this book is that their chemistry doesn't really develop. I was left not caring very much that they were happy in the end.
This book was enjoyable in general. In contrast to just letting the naive hero think everything is fine and that he is a stud in the sack, the heroine first requests improvement in the bedroom so she can receive her O, too. Second, the hero actually acts on this criticism to get better while minimizing drama. I just wished that once they got together and it was amazing that it showed more on the pages and that we got all the feels along the way.
Enjoyable historical romance! I really enjoyed this easy read. I wish there was a bit more connection between the characters beyond s*x, but it was a fun, easy read. I will probably read more books in this series.
This was a great read. Quick, really lively enemies-to-lovers romance. The Duke of Hasford, Thaddeus is looking for the proper wife, a young woman named Jane - quiet, demure, wholesome - the perfect mother for his heir. Jane has a sister, Lavinia, who is her polar opposite and so the hijinks ensue. Lavinia is outgoing, the life of the party, someone the Duke would have nothing to do with until they are caught in a compromising position - forced to marry, Thaddeus and Lavinia seem to be able to barely put up with each other. This book was a delight, easy to read, and moves quickly and you can't but help to love the characters as they dance back and forth from hate to hot passion. Definitely worth your time.
Overall: 3.5 rounded to ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Plot/Storyline: 📖📖📖 - this one relied quite a bit on a lack of communication and assumptions of each other for the plot
Feels: 🦋🦋🦋
Emotional Depth: 💔💔💔💔
Tension: ⚡⚡
Romance: 💞💞💞
Sensuality: 💋💋 - the intimate scenes didn’t do it for me here. Initial ones were disappointing for the heroine and some fade to black then later on I felt they were still on the short side and not super developed. Frampton also likes to use the word penis
Intimate Scene Length: 🍑🍑🍑 (some shorter)
Steam Scale (Number of Scenes): 🔥🔥🔥 - this one is hard to count steam. There’s a number of scenes but I didn’t count some because they were too short, or disappointing for the heroine. This might feel hotter to you, I was more conservative on my flame count.
Humor: Yes – especially through the audiobook. I feel like Jilly Bond does a great job getting that humor through that can be subtle throughout.
Perspective: Third person from both the hero and the heroine
Should I read in order?
It’s not totally necessary but the family is definitely woven together through the series and you’ll get the background of Sebastian a bit better. (This is the third book of the series. Tall, Duke and Dangerous (book 2) features this hero’s friend Nash and Never Kiss a Duke (book 1) features this hero’s cousin)
Basic plot:
Thaddeus is on the search for a wife and believes he finds it in Lady Jane Capel. But her sister, Lavinia will do whatever it takes to protect her from him and instead lands in a compromising position that must result in marriage.
Give this a try if you want:
- mostly London setting
- secret writer heroine
- compromised heroine resulting in marriage
- medium steam – there’s a number of scenes but some are short, vague and fade to black (details at the end of review)
- Duke hero that was a prior soldier
My thoughts:
I did like a lot about this book. I listened to the audio and I have started enjoying Jilly Bond quite a bit. Some of her voices sound a bit, well, elderly to me, but once I got past that it was so much better. I think she does a really great job portraying the humor in this story, which was quite delightful.
This book was definitely something new for me. Our couple comes together after being compromised, which is one of my favorite tropes. But then, he’s actually not too great at sex, so they have to work through that. And I actually loved that as a plot point. It was fun and sweet and a bit vulnerable. I did wish it was a bit more...explosive when they came together in a good way though? I wanted it to totally wreck them both and I didn’t really feel that.
This book does have quite a bit of lack of communication between the two of them. I struggled with that a bit, though I did think it fit here due to Sebastian’s upbringing and his lack of confidence with expressing his feelings.
So I don’t think this one would quite be a reread for me, but it was overall pleasant. Frampton’s humor and family relationships shine through in this one and it was a fun read
A spicy and heartwarming romance, A Wicked Bargain for the Duke is a wonderful read about Thaddeus, a duke, and Lady Lavinia, who finds themselves married when they never wanted or planned to do so.
When I first started reading this book, I had no idea what to expect. I love historical romances but tend to dive into my books without knowing much, so that's exactly what I did with this one. Once I got into it, I became obsessed with the plot, characters, banter, and more. The chemistry between Thaddeus and Lavinia was truly phenomenal, and some of their scenes together made me blush in public, as I read most of this book at the pool during my spring break. I truly enjoyed it and need to pick up the first two books in the series as well!
TW for sexual content, emotionally absent parents.
A huge thank you to NetGalley and Avon for the ARC of A Wicked Bargain for the Duke by Megan Frampton.
Megan Frampton knows how to write high heat historical romance that is engaging. I love this series and her books will be featured in multiple historical romance listicles as she is an autobuy author,
I've enjoyed all of the books in Megan Frampton's Hazards of Dukes series. I very much liked Lavinia and enjoy historical romances with outspoken female characters.
This book wasn't for me. I didn't like the characters. They were clueless. The sex scenes were awkward. I got bored very quickly.
I really enjoyed this book, as I have the whole series. I will continue to look for Megan Frampton's books in the future.
A Wicked Bargain for the Duke is a light and endearing story with plenty of laughs ready for you in waiting. This is an author I have enjoyed over the years, she has a quirky sense of writ, and it displays quite well on the page. I was eager to see what this author would deliver in this one, and I wasn't nervous that it was the third in the series (when I haven't read the first two) although now that I have read this one, I am wanting to pick up the first two books.
In A Wicked Bargain for the Duke, we have a story that features a writer in hiding, Lavinia, who is overprotective of her younger sister. But when the Duke of Hasford, sets his sights on Jane who is in love with someone else. So in her endeavor to protect her sister, she ends up in a comprising position with Thaddeus and they will have to marry. Lavinia isn't the woman that Thaddeus wanted originally, and he has certain standards of what he wants for his family. Lavinia agrees to his certain "standards" but when sparks fly in and out of the bedroom, there is so much more than just this agreement. But with both hearts so prideful, who will fight for the other first and let go of preconceived notions on what marriage should be?
I was deeply saddened to give this book such a rating, but I really needed to. I had the hardest time getting into this book and so the first half was a battle and as this is an author I do endeavor to support and I received this as an ARC, I wanted to see this one all the way through. I will say that I was happy when the second half turned out so much better than the first half. It could have been my mood, not really sure why I struggled so much. But I did enjoy this story and I always love a good marriage of convenience. There was some "modern feminism" thrown into this story, it didn't bother me too much as it wasn't too "soap box", it felt a bit more genuine in the way it was implemented into the story so bravo to this author for that. But it also had me rolling my eyes in some portions. I did love the redemption at the end and seeing a hero fight for the heroine. Just wanted more from the heroine, I was expecting much more than I received from her, I love a lady that will fight for her man just as fiercely as the man will.
Overall while I had some issues, I found this story to be quite enjoyable and kept me entertained, it had a sense of smexy playfulness that I have always be endeared to with this author, looking forward to delving into the other books in the series.
Megan Frampton was one of those authors that I've been recommended time and time again and I was very excited to read this book.
The premise was interesting as I haven't read a historical romance story about a heroine that writes romance novels and I thought that and the fact that she had to teach Thaddeus how to please her. This is something that doesn't get brought up a ton in romance, and it's pretty refreshing because adept lovers or not, all women are different and pleasure isn't usually a one size fits all sort of ordeal.
I liked the chemistry and the banter and the fact that it is more realistic in some aspects. I'll definitely be picking up another Megan Frampton title, she's got the potential to be an auto-buy author for me.
This was my first Megan Frampton book and I liked it and will probably read this author again.

The problem with this book is that their chemistry doesn't really develop. I was left not caring very much that they were happy in the end.
Lavinia finds a match of her own but did not expect she’d find hers by ensuring her sister the freedom to wait and choose for her long desired match.
Thaddeus was expecting only a wife in name to beget his firstborn. little did he know that he would start to fall for his quirky and independent woman.
I think the author did a good job of pulling out the qualities everyone struggles with when you first get married~ that communication takes time. This couple learned from one another but understood one another ona deeper level.
I would recommend this for someone who likes regencies and friends to lover tropes. I was provided this ARC by netgalley. I would rate this novel a 3 out of 5.
Thaddeus & Lavinia’s romance was utterly delightful🥰 Thaddeus, the reluctant heir to a dukedom, is finally planning to settle down and select a bride to procreate with (weird word choice i know but thats his vibe lol) in order to continue his line and has ~finally~ landed upon the lucky miss, Lady Jane Capel. The one problem being Jane’s sister Lavinia, who along with being altogether too vexing, too bold, and to beautiful, is decidedly against his suit. But of course, then its LAVINIA who he’s caught alone with, and the pair are forced to marry.
AAHHH so much of this book is my catnip!! A stuffy ex-military hero, a brash heroine who pushes his buttons, a marriage of convenience/sex deal, antagonism as foreplay, like its *all there* between Lavina and Thaddeus❤️ It also gave me some 2005 P&P energy, what with the sisterly dynamic and the tension between the couple. This book also does the whole “we had sex and it wasn’t good, so now we have to talk about it” thing (literally at one point she asks if he even knows where her clitoris is, and I CACKLED😂) and I just love seeing that in a romance. Wicked Bargain was a bit of a slow burn, but once these two actually made it to the bedroom & talked out their feelings👀🥵 DAMN
This was my first Megan Frampton and it *certainly* won’t be the last, y’all should definitely check it out!! Many thanks to Netgalley for my review copy
This was an ok book. Not excellent, not horrible but ok. The romance didn’t feel real. The feelings Thaddeus and Lavinia had for each other weren’t explored enough. A few sex scenes some more detailed than others but I felt the connection and emotions were missing.
I follow Frampton on Twitter and requested this novel based on a bit of her description of it. I liked it very much! I like "by the book" heroes who find a way to let loose a little when they find their partners, and this book is firmly in that space. One thing i really appreciated is how fully Frampton sells the main couple. While the plot itself didn't always work for me, I fully was on board with the main couple. I also appreciated how invisible the heroine felt in her family, and how much that bothered the hero over time. Their relationship was really equitable, and I felt the story played with that admirably.
This book was okay. I read the others book in this series and I have enjoyed the other books better. I didn't really see an emotional connection between the H and h as I would have liked.
I enjoyed A Wicked Bathaon for the Duke very much. The heroine had a no BS outlook and I love that in a main character.
A great storyline where Lavinia tries to keep her sister Jane out of the matrimonial path of Thaddeus who is a duke. Well as a result of trying to sabotage their relationship, Lavinia and Thaddeus accidentally fall into a compromising situation that causes them to wed. Not what either of them wanted. Unhappy Thaddeus thinks he can deal with the situation by making a plan. No love, no attachment, just great sɛx to procreate an heir. After that they can live separate lives. Well Lavinia is a force of nature. She is funny, fiercely loyal to those who she loves and deserve it and is maintaining a major secret from society. Thaddeus is a former military man prior to becoming a duke and he is not thrilled about being a duke. Lavinia gets under his skin and starts to make him think more with his feelings that he was not in touch with. But the hilarious part was he needed instructions on love making and who better than self-educated Lavinia to teach him. She would tease him and make him laugh and somewhat smile. This dang plan of his was in their way of having a happy relationship. None the less they fell in love with each other. They could not tell each other. When Jane had a crisis, Lavinia wisps her away to the country leaving Thaddeus behind. It was not what she really wanted but this dang plan of Thaddeus was in her way of a happy ending. Both Lavinia and Thaddeus were truly miserable without the other. But what to do. A very fun read. I do recommend it.
