Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. The author uses science fiction merely as a vehicle to show his knowledge of military small unit tactics, especially that of the Marine Corps. He did not develop who the enemy aliens were in a satisfactory way. there was no description of what the universe was like except a general description of other civilizations that have disappeared. Some weapons and aircraft have advanced but not as much as expected in a future military novel. Disappointing.
This is a great series from a great author. The action sequences are great and the story keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens! Another great series to read!
Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
E Spec Books has kindly provided me with an ARC of its recently released "The 18th Race Omnibus Edition" by David Sherman. This omnibus includes three complete novels previously published. The three novels are "Issue in Doubt", "In All Directions", and "To Hell and Regroup." In addition, there is a "bonus" short story. The action (and it is intense) revolves around an invasion of what is essentially an earth colony world by a previously unencountered race of aliens. The action extends from fleet actions (although these receive relatively short shrift) to intense ground combat, which is clearly Sherman's strong point. I read the book in just three days, so hard to put down was it. If you are accustomed to reading military sci-fi, you have probably encountered Sherman's work before, and there is never any doubt as to his skills as a writer and his strong background in military science. If the book has any weakness, it is in the last portion of the trilogy, which seems somewhat rushed and a little problematic. That said, I strongly encourage anyone fond of this genre of fiction to pick a copy up; it is action packed, thought provoking, and thoroughly entertaining.
