Do you every feel timing plays a role in your enjoyment of certain books? I was given this arc about a year ago from the fine folks at Berkley. At the time I tried to read before publication, its the norm when receiving an arc. But I couldn't get past the opening chapters. I have tried it a few times since and viola last month it worked!
The KSSC is more than a story about seeing ghosts (though I wish they were more predominate). It's the story of finding oneself and acceptance. Sabrina is forced to move back home after losing her job. While home is a safe place for her the outside world contains an old boyfriend and his new fiance (also Sabrina's new boss). Let the fun begin.
This was a fun read, especially when Ray comes into the picture. Can Sabrina overcome her past with Molly, that ghost from the past - literally? Find purpose and contentment? Guess you will have to read the book to find out.
My thanks to Berkley (via Netgalley) for a digital copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.
3.5/5 stars -- this was fun and very quirky + very cozy but something about it fell a little flat. I think this is more a contemporary romance rather than a romcom and I'm not sure it was for me in particular. I wasn't truly rooting for the main character the whole story and that made it difficult to read at times.
This book follows journalist Sabrina a eccentric, quirky, adorable, relatable and one of the kindest characters I have read about. That’s her family curse means that the women of the family can see and connect with supernatural entities and help them. This curse only happens in Sabrina's hometown but she ends up going back home to the place she is fond of. But there she meets Ray and begins to fall for him.
Overall this book was an entertaining, laugh out loud, sweet and emotional read that had me hooked from start to finish.
Reichert creates the best characters, I swear. Once again, her book took me in, gave me the feels, and left me wanting more. Fantastic read.
This was a cute summer romance. It took me a bit to get into the story, but I found it to be funny and surprisingly heartwarming. The supernatural twist made it very unique and different from your typical rom-com. Really enjoyed!
I expected this to just be a fun and quirky rom-com with a touch of the supernatural, and it was, but it also dealt with the intensity of anxiety and panic attacks.
What a quirky novel. This was quite a trip. I quite enjoyed that ease that the author shared dealing with Sabrina's anxieties.
Ray was a breath of interesting fresh air. I would have loved to know a bit more about him and his past.
I felt that there was a huge shift from we like each other to we love each other. That was a bit too farfetched for me.
The ghosts were awesome. I could read an entire book about Molly.
Overall this was a good, fast read. Thanks Berkley and Netgalley for the advanced eCopy.
Thank you @berkleyromance for a copy of this book. This was a fun take on fake dating romance with an added element of ghost. I felt bad for Sabrina as she tries to leave the small town and the ghosts that surrounds her. She was an underdog from the beginning and you want to root for her to succeed. I love how Ray was so amazing from the start and accepted Sabrina as she is. I really thought the added element of why the ghosts were with Sabrina added a nice element of mystery and I adored Molly and her friendship with Sabrina.
This book was definitely not what I imagined it would be but I did enjoy reading it. It was just so sweet and kind that I loved reading it. Ray was such a kind and sweet loving person and perfect for Sabrina. Sabrina came alive under the love and guidance of Ray.
I'm a sucker for a romance with a journalist protagonist, and I must say, I absolutely loved reading Sabrina's story. The supernatural element to the narrative was a fun touch, and her relationship with Ray was just so fun to read about. It was such a delightful book!
Great ghostly, eccentric wonderful story. The premise had me a bit nervous because I don't like ghosts' stories, but this is such a great book that I'm glad I gave it a try.
There’s no place like home to help get yourself back on track. Friends, family, and even the spirits that only you can see….yep, I said spirits - can be the perfect fix.
Sabrina is back home in the Wisconsin Dells. She lost her job and is low on funds, and is now stuck back home in her parents house until she can find new employment. It wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t for the spirits - the family curse - you see the women in her family can see spirits - and they come to them to get help with unfinished business. Sabrina usually sends them to her mom, but since she’s been back home, they seem determined to seek her out. The last thing Sabrina wants is to go back to her weird and awkward ways that people just don’t understand when she’s really just conversing with spirits. At least in the big city, people don’t seem to notice as much.
Then there is Ray, the new guy in town who has bought a local restaurant and seems to have an eye for Sabrina. Not really having any time for romance, she tries to avoid Ray, heaven forbid he finds out about the curse, let alone sees her talking to absolutely NO ONE. But she finds herself more and more attracted to him, oddly seeming to run into him everywhere. Wanting to focus on finding a job and hitting the road, Ray’s charming and kind presence in her life makes her consider the idea of dating again, grasp just how wonderful being back at home is, and realize how much of a difference she and her bumbling peculiarities can make in the world from right there in the Dells.
Quirky and laugh out loud fun, The Kindred Spirits Supper Club is the unconventional romcom you never thought you needed. Starting with a unique meet-cute and a story line just pushing towards the beloved friends to lovers outcome, Amy Reichert makes an anxiety ridden girl surrounded by talking spirits the most adorable heroine in the romance genre. There’s a dreamy guy, meddling family, an ex boyfriend, tons of awkward drama, and an unusual cast of secondary characters bringing a touch of mystery to an irresistibly scrumptious read. It’s the feel good book of the spring and sure to be a huge hit. Definitely my kind of book. Highly recommend.
This was such a unique concept for a book, and I'm so glad I picked it up. Like the author's previous books, the prose is so lyrical and the setting immersive.
The synopsis for this one sounded so cute! I have mixed results with contemporaries with magical realism and I don’t think this one worked for me in the end. This is definitely more women’s fiction than romance, but I think a lot of people would enjoy this. The writing was engaging, unfortunately I lost interest with the plot. DNF at 33%
The Kindred Spirits Supper Club is a super sweet rom-com with a supernatural twist. It plays on the theme of returning to your hometown and finding yourself there. Protagonist Sabrina Monroe deals with anxiety (but who wouldn't if they grew up seeing ghosts?), and it's always good to see representation normalized. Suitor Ray is consistent with his feelings, which is a nice change from other books of the genre.
Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for sharing this book with me. All thoughts are my own.
Charming, adorable romcom with one of the most beloved heroines ever—this is your perfect summer read!
Set in the heat of a summer in the Wisconsin Dells, Amy E. Reichert’s The Kindred Spirits Supper Club is not your typical summer romance. Sabrina is an incredibly dynamic lead, and in addition the stress she feels from losing her job, moving back home, and having to deal with some high school bullies that haven’t grown up in their time away from college, Sabrina Monroe also has the at-times unfortunate but ultimately sweet gift of being able to see and speak with ghosts.
If you’re wondering how exactly ghosts will figure into a romcom, don’t! Just trust me when I say that what I thought would be the weirdest part of the book actually ended up being the most charming.
Sabrina meets a handsome and sweet restauranteur at a water park while she is with her family, and what begins as an awkward encounter quickly turns adorable as their pathes continue to cross, both recently moved home to the Dells. As Sabrina tries to sort out her life, she’s convinced that this is the wrong time to begin dating someone. But Ray is determined to win her over as the two discover more about eachother, their families, their pasts, and work to make Ray’s re-imagined supper club a success.
I just absolutely loved Ray and Sabrina so much! Sabrina’s in the unfortunate position of working for one of the wealthiest and meanest girls in town, who also used to be her former classmate and is engaged to Sabrina’s ex. On paper, Ray is from the same type of world as Sabrian’s rival, not Sabrina herself. But Ray couldn’t be more different than those in the privileged class he was raised in. He’s kind, a bit awkward, and would rather spend his days testing cheese curd recipes out than being part of the society scene.
Sabrina is the type of person who is working a job she hates for a woman who bullies her, just so she can pay off her loans, but will still leave cash in library books to brighten someone’s day who finds it. Sabrina also does everything she can to help the ghosts she can see find closure and happiness, even when it means facing adversity herself.
It’s impossible to read this and not completely fall under the spell of the beautiful characters and story Amy E. Reichert has crafted! The story is paced to perfection, with lots of threads that you pick up along the way that ultimately weave together by the end. A book with a strong message of loving yourself, putting kindness into the world, and learning to appreciate your quirks as blessings rather than shortcomings!
Thank you Berkley Publishing for my copy. Opinions are my own.
Another cute story! Huge fan of this book and loved the characters. Very enjoyable! Definitely recommend picking up!
I love Sabrina and Ray and Molly and the whole crew. When Sabrina's attempting to figure out what comes next for her, she meets Ray. A charismatic city-type who comes home to make something of himself and the local spot his family owns. Both Ray and Sabrina grapple with what they want to do versus what their families expect from them and they both felt so....real.
The Kindred Spirits Supper Club is the quintessential summer read. From the small-town setting to the delightful food talk, I enjoyed the entire story. And, the whole seeing spirits thing was simply the cherry on top. What a joy of a book!
Super cute story and was perfect for a summer read. Can't wait to read the next one by this author! Thanks so much for letting me read early!
This book really hits the spot as far as midwestern-vibes go. Reichert handles mental health in an authentic and nuanced way; the idea of being "stuck" in the Midwest and having mental health difficulties spoke to my very soul. I think that what I struggled with was there is SO MUCH going on in this book. Mental health, romance, feeling stuck in the midwest, ghosts, a mystery, a question of inheritance, having to prove family wrong, bullying...there is just a LOT. It felt like in the middle things just slowed down to a crawl and I had to force myself to keep going. I think there are a lot of good ideas in this book but it was just a little too "busy" for me.
Thank you to Reichert, Berkley and Netgalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
