Wonderful series that just gets better. The characters have really developed and I like to read what they are all doing. Highly recommend this series!
Sherlock Holmes has spawned many books written in the same style and using the same deductive reasoning to solve crimes. This is one of the better ones I've read. Leonard Goldberg has paid tribute to Holmes by maintaining the crime solving mysteries excellence.
I enjoy this series. It happens to be one of my favorite historical mystery series. I mean what's not to love about the daughter of Sherlock and the son of Watson teaming up to solve mysteries. And I love how the Watson character doesn't try to over step nor tell the Sherlock character what to do just because she's female. He allows her strengths to shine.
I am a huge fan of The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes, which is about Sherlock Holmes’ daughter solving crimes. This installment did not disappoint! I like how Joanna who has mostly been the sidekick in the series finally comes as her own person! I thought the mystery itself was very compelling because it enhanced the characters development. The mystery also kept me invested and guessing throughout the novel. The story itself is very fast-pasted! I like how the novel made Victorian era to be very atmospheric! Thus, I recommend this fans of Tessa Harris, Karen Odden, and Jennifer Ashley!
I apprecitate the publisher allowing me to read this book. This is a great mystery that kept me guessing until the end, I can't wait to read more.
The Abduction of Pretty Penny, by author Leonard Goldberg, is the Fifth installment in The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes Mysteries series. Joanna, (daughter of Sherlock Holmes), joined by her husband John, (son of Dr. Watson who is chronicling Joanna's adventures), and by Dr. John Watson, (long time friend and partner of Sherlock), are commissioned to find a local playhouse actress named Pretty Penny who has gone missing. Pretty Penny is the stage name of a young actress in Whitechapel Playhouse who has been kidnapped.
Young Penny Martin, "Pretty Penny", has been admired for her role as Juliet in the Shakespeare play. Her presence on stage is renowned not only for her beauty, but also for the aire of her finesse for one so young. It appears that Penny was partaking in late night dinners with a mysterious gentleman. Exactly who is this unknown man and is he responsible for her kidnapping? As the ”Unfortunates” (prostitutes) body counts begins to increase, in the same gruesome and remarkable way that Jack the Ripper was known for, torturing his victims while yet still alive, dissecting, killing them, it becomes clear that Jack has returned. But why has he resurfaced after 30 years?
With constant taunting's from Jack, Joanna and family get hit with the stark reality that Jack might go after someone precious to the family. What better than to kidnap and kill Little John, Sherlock’s Holmes grandson, thereby making a name forever by defeating Sherlock Holmes himself, by way of Sherlock’s daughter, Joanna. As the investigation goes deeper, secret after secret is unlocked and more lives are at stake. They are dealing with someone dark, someone evil, someone who mocks.
With a bit of help from Toby Too, as well as The Irregulars who have unique skill sets, as well as Joanna using her self as bait, the question is whether or not Joanna can solve the mystery before Jack takes another victim. The Victorian vernacular, historical bits and fascinating characters contribute to this suspenseful book filled with the right level of tension and sticky webs of deceit. As a reviewer, I tend to over analyze things like the fact that Joanna smokes Turkish cigarettes like a chimney. At some point, John and Dr. Watson need to address the possible health implications for Joanna as well as her son who seems ready to step into the shoes of his legendary grandfather.
In this series, Sherlock Holmes left a daughter, Joanna, to carry on his work. She grew up and married the son of Dr. Watson and together the two form a team to solve those mysteries which come their way with the assistance of Dr. Watson who is still alive. Their newest case comes when the owner of the Whitechapel Players, the local theatre group, comes to Joanna to ask her to find their star actress, Pretty Penny. She has disappeared and there is fear that she has been abducted.
Just like twenty-eight years ago, young prostitutes are being killed on the streets of Whitechapel. Has Jack the Ripper returned to take back up his grisly task or is there a copycat? Is there a chance that he could have Pretty Penny? The investigation shows Penny had a wealthy suitor who insisted on remaining anonymous and that the pair had been quarreling. Could he have done something to Penny? Several doctors who work at the local charity clinic and who are also actors at the Players are suspects due to their surgical skills.
The stakes are raised even higher when Joanna receives a letter that makes it clear that her son, Johnny, has been targeted by the serial killer. The Watsons need to find the killer both to protect their son and to solve the mystery of Penny's disappearance and possible death. Can they do so?
This is the fifth book in this series. At first I was worried that I wouldn't like it since I love the original Sherlock Holmes stories so much but I was quickly drawn in and found myself entranced. The characters are finely drawn and the premise is believable. The setting seems very realistic and the author's research detailed. I listened to this title and the narrator was cool and collected as the entire Watson team was. This book is recommended for mystery readers and Sherlock Holmes fans.
This was a fun mystery similar to Sherlock Holmes, Penny did a great job at solving the case. It was cute and funny and sometimes I found myself trying to figure out the mystery before penny. I enjoyed this book and think those who like the Sherlock Holmes tv show will love this book.
This is the 5th book in the series with Joanna, the daughter of Sherlock Holmes. This series has fast become one of my favorite and I highly recommend reading all the books.
Joanna is married to Dr. John Watson, Jr. (John Watson's son) and they still reside at 221B Baker Street. Joanna's husband is the one writing the story of each of their adventures just like Watson did for Sherlock.
In this book, Joanna and the Watsons are asked to find an actress by the name of Pretty Penny who had gone missing. As they start investigating her disappearance, Joanna realizes they are dealing with Jack the Ripper who seems to have made an appearance after a 28 year absence.
This book had me sitting on the edge of my seat. It was a quick paced book with Joanna coming face to face with the killer.
Thank you to NetGalley for giving me an e-book to read. This opinion of the book was mine.
Leonard Goldberg commits the daughter of Sherlock Holmes to solving the Abduction of Pretty Penny. Joanna and the Watsons suspect she was abducted by Jack the Ripper who has started murdering again. Joanna's family is in danger and the police seem unable to find the Ripper. Historical mystery at its best.
Leonard Goldberg embodies much of Sherlock Holmes’ odd quirky character in his character Joanna, daughter to Holmes and wife to John Watson, Jr. In “Abduction”, Joanna and the Watsons are investigating a killer whose methods hint at a 1917 resurrection of Jack the Ripper. Joanna is dispassionately brilliant and the Watsons are always two steps behind her, getting schooled in the art of detection.
This is a fun take-off series if you just can’t get enough of the Holmes genre.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Great mystery! This book had me on the edge of my seat as the Watsons and Joanna try to rescue Pretty Penny before it was to late. I love how the Daughter of Sherlock Holmes books are written as if they were a Sherlock Holmes novel. I love how we don’t know who did it until the end and I love trying to make the connection that Joanna does. I really enjoy this series of books.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
This is one of my favorite series. Sherlock is unfortunately no longer with us, but we see his genius continued on through his daughter (and maybe some day through his grandson). Mystery kept me guessing and the England setting was once again fun to visit.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed listening to this book and getting to know the daughter of Sherlock Holmes. I loved the narrator and how he read each persons lines. There were quite a few twists and turns. It was fun to see what a daughter of Sherlock Holmes might have grown up to be like. I received a copy of this audiobook from Netgalley for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
This is the second book I've read in the Daughter of Sherlock Holmes Mysteries and I have to say I liked this one better than the first book. When I agreed to read this, I didn't realize it was book five, so I checked out the first book with the intention of reading all of them if I had time, so I would know what was going on, but I didn't like book one very much. I'm put off by Joanna's character. Now, I need to qualify this. I've never read a Sherlock Holmes book, but watched multiple movies because I love the premise. I rather imagine this book is written similarly as far as Sherlock's character and bluntness go, but I guess since she's a woman it bothers me how unfeeling Joanna came across. I understand she's supposed to be like that, but still. At least in this book, you're more aware of her feelings for her son. The story overall was interesting in bringing back Jack the Ripper and I was excited to see what would happen. It was well thought out, but I had a few issues with some of the lack of explanation about certain aspects. It felt like plot holes to me although small. Overall, I liked it but didn't love it.
This book is the fifth in the "daughter of Sherlock Holmes" series. This was the first one I've read, but I don't feel as if I've missed out on any vital information by starting so late in the series. The story begins in March 1917 when a woman calls in at 221b Baker Street to report the disappearance of a young woman. Although it is mentioned that Sherlock Holmes has been dead for a while, Dr. Watson still resides there, as well as his son (also named John who is a pathologist) who happens to be married to Joanna, Sherlock Holmes's daughter. She has apparently inherited his powers of deduction as well as his keen desire to hunt down criminals and solve cases. The new case involves the disappearance of "Pretty Penny" an actress starring in a current production of Romeo and Juliet. To make matters worse, mutilated bodies begin turning up, suggesting that Jack the Ripper has returned and started killing again. It's up to Joanna to solve the case, since despite years of instruction and explanation, both Dr. Watson and his son remain clueless when it comes to deducing what profession a given person passing on the street has, or what they had for lunch three days ago. The story was interesting enough, but Joanna comes across as very humorless. She continually has to point out things that should be obvious to others, as well as long explanations as to how she reached that conclusion. I was also a little startled by things coming up which seemed to be at odds with the time and place of the story, such as the fact that Pretty Penny had a "stalker" and that she liked "candy." Fans of the Sherlock Holmes stories will likely enjoy any excuse to visit 221b Baker Street again!
This is the fifth book in the Daughter of Sherlock Holmes series by Leonard Goldberg. This was a fast paced thriller that kept you on the edge of your seat wondering the Killer's next move.
To help relieve boredom, JoAnna and the Watsons' accept a case to find a missing actress, Pretty Penny. Little did they know this case would turn into a race to catch the most notorious killer of all time, Jack the Ripper.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press Minotaur Books for a copy of this book for review.
This was an absolutely amazing book. It’s the 5th in the series but it can totally be read as a standalone, which is what I did. However after reading this books I’ve already added the first 4 to my collection. Growing up I was never really into mystery but I did love the original Sherlock Holmes stories, and this book reminds me so much of the original.
This series is all about Joanna, who is Holmes’s daughter and is like his mini me. Now Sherlock is this story has already passed, which I would have loved to seen their relationship. However, Joanna is married to Watson’s son, and along with Watson himself help solve a gruesome mystery. I don’t want to ruin the story but the story flows very logically as you would expect, although I missed a lot of the clues anyways. 😅 I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
It took me a while to get into this book but once I did the story was really good. I would give this series another go now that I am familiar with the characters and style of writing.
I love that the Baker Street Irregulars make an appearance in this books series, always important to have a CI or two in your back pocket.
What a great book! It was fast paced and hard to put down! I love the clever banter and I also didn't realize it was part of a series! I can't wait to read the other ones or listen to them!
