This was amazing book taking the art of matchmaking and giving an it a scientific spin. I really enjoyed the story line.
I loved all the scenes of the two best friends working from the coffee shop. Their conversations and people watching were very entertaining. I especially loved how they called River "Americano."
I also loved how River and Jess both agree to give each other a chance. It was fun to watch their relationship unfold. He impressed me more than once - but he also made me hate him a few times too.
The romance in this book was perfect. It added to the story but didn't district from it.
I've enjoyed everything I've read by this duo, but this might be my new favorite.
I received an advanced copy of this book through NetGalley. This is my honest review.
Certainly the best Christina Lauren romance in a while! I was about ready to give up on their romances, but I'm glad I gave this one a chance. "The Soulmate Equation" is so readable and moves fast. I loved the family dynamics and the San Diego setting was a great choice.
It was certainly a joy to read, but I did find myself skimming over some of the stats and science talk. Sure, it added detail to Jess & River's careers and connection, but it wasn't very entertaining to read. On the other hand, the sex scenes could have used significantly more detail! They were strangely vague, like every other sentence was missing, and I found myself trying to piece together what was going on. Maybe it was an attempt to cool down the heat level to appeal to a broader audience? Personal preference - get it on the page!! Or, if you must, fade to black. The in between just isn't satisfying.
If you are looking for a fast moving, low heat romance with plenty of fun family dynamics, give it a shot!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
Such a funny read with using math and statistics to decide who to date. She has decided to not reenter the dating world based on her research, but one thing in this world you can't hide from is love.
Can you find a soulmate through dna? That is the premise of this story.
I love that both the main characters are nerds and that Jess is also a single mom. I love the banter in this book.
This is a wonderful beach and or summer read.
This was such an interesting premise, and the book definitely lived up to it! The conflict didn't feel shoehorned in, and the plot gave time to develop the relationship.
I absolutely loved everything about this book. The chemistry between River and Jess was fabulous. The unique matching tool was such a clever plot. I’m recommending this one to everybody! Thank you for my advanced reader copy
Another success by Christina Lauren! I adored this book and this couple. If you needed another reminder as to why these authors are amazing than read this book.
Jess Davis is a staistician. In fact, she is a genious when it comes to numbers and equations of any sort. As a single mother, she had given up on dating. However, she decides to date again, but using number crunching to find her perfect man. There is a matchmaking company naned GeneticAlly, and this program pretty much to guarantee to match people together perfectly based on their DNA. Jess is shocked to discover that she matches Dr. River Pena with near perfect compatability.
Wait! She knows River Pena and he is NOT her type. Not at all. In fact, he has traits she finds deplorable. So, how can he be her soulmate? To prove the validity of the program, Jess is offered a deal. If she gets to know River they will pay her, and this is something she seriously considers. In fact, she is struggling financialloy, so just maybe she can make enough money for her and her daughter - while also proving that the program is flawed.
Can Jess get to know River well enough to see if they are indeed soulmates? Is the match real? If so, what would it mean for the bottom line of the company itself? Well, I loved discovering these things as I read this terrific story. Christina Lauren definitely hit it out of the park with this book and I am looking forward to reading more of their backlist and anything else coming up from them.
Many thanks to Gallery Books and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
The Soulmate Equation was a charming, sweet, and entertaining story!
Jess and River were both such interesting characters. They each have the things they struggle with and at times were so supportive of the other. I loved seeing how they truly connected and began to fall for each other. There were a number of sweet, adorable moments they shared and they had great chemistry.
My heart broke for Jess as I learned about some of her family and relationship experiences, but it was so wonderful seeing her relationship with her grandparents, best friend, and her daughter.
I had read one previous book from Christina Lauren that I liked, but didn't love. After finishing this, though, I am looking forward to reading more of their backlist!
You’re looking at one of my new favorite CLo books! After reading the synopsis (swipe to see!), I was worried I’d get bogged down by the scientific jargon, but I thought it was just the right amount and it added to the plotline while not being overly done. It was easy to cheer for Jess, the protagonist, and River, the hot scientist and I found myself invested in their stories early on. As a bonus, Juno, Jess’s daughter, and her grandparents, Nana and Pops, are just adorable supporting characters and every girl needs a friend like Fizzy, her BFF, in her life. I thought there was the perfect amount of steam and was engaged throughout. It was a quick read for me!
The Christina Lauren team has written another must-read romance. I love the fake relationship trope and this book is next level! The chemistry between Jess and River was perfection. The Soulmate Equation is my new favorite and I will be recommending this book to everyone this summer!
This was a good read. Interesting concept but I didn't really care to much about the book. It was moving to slow for my liking.
What a wonderful book! This was my second dive into Christina Lauren and I have to say I loved every second. I now understand why they are upheld and so beloved in the romance genre. All of my props to them for combining love and science and showing just how much they relate.
LOVE LOVE LOVE.
But annoyed a little with the ending. I definitely loved this more than the last two or three new ones. Loved the science behind it. Wasn’t super thriller either how Jess didn’t take in what River needed after their fight. She just wanted him to only be there for her. So that was incredibly irritating. But overall I really liked it!
Jess is a single-mom working her data analysis job out of a coffee house, just trying her best to make ends meet. Every morning, she enjoys a mysterious stranger who stops in to grab his coffee. One morning, Jess learns that he’s the founder of a DNA-based dating app, and on a whim Jess and her friend decide to submit their DNA to be matched. In the process, Jess learns that her coffee-house crush is stubborn, rude, and stuck up...and also 98% compatible with her.

I love Christina Lauren books, but wondered initially if this particular book would feel similar to “The One” by John Marrs. I’m happy to report that while the premise felt familiar, the characters and their storyline made it feel fresh and different—much more of a rom com take on a DNA-based matchmaking company compared to “The One”, which I really enjoyed.

Overall, I think The Soulmate Equation is the perfect sort of book to read at the beach or hanging out by the pool this summer! It was an engaging and quick read, but also the type of book that’s easy to put down and pick back up when the kids need a snack or a reapplication of sunscreen. It was just what I’ve come to expect from Christina Lauren—fun with a little bit of spice!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (out of 5 stars)
This was a cute romance. It's a really good book to read if you want something on the lighter side. I really like the main characters. The only thing I wish was that the book was a little longer. I would've loved more time with the characters.
From all the buzz around this book I thought it might be good, but it was a typical chick lit romance with a little bit of math & science tossed it. A quick lite read for the beach. ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for a fair review.
IM IN LOVE WITH THIS BOOK!!!! I read my first Christina Lauren book last year when In a Holidaze came out and I think I devoured it in one sitting. This book was also a quick and fun and wonderful read!!! I instantly related to the age of the characters, and felt like this was perfect for what I was looking to read at this moment in my life.
Can I also just mention how much I LOVE how Christina Lauren never lets her characters stew in an argument for more than a chapter or two. I hate it when I'm reading books and over half the book is just conflict and stress and tension. It takes away from the reading experience to the point at which I actually become stressed in my own daily life. So its a breath of fresh air to read one of Lauren's books where the characters get over their nonsense and get back to the sweet love stories that it seems like are a trend in her books!!!
This one was just ahhh perfection. Can I please have a River in my life?!! I NEED HIM!!!! I loved that even though he came off stuffy and standoffish, underneath he was nothing short of sweet and respectful. I LOVED IT!
Our main character was also really refreshing, she had her head on straight and knew what she wanted out of life. She wasn't willing to compromise, especially when it came to her daughter, and I loved reading about a strong female lead character who wasn't all wishy washy and ignorant to life in general. I also loved the strong conflict and resolution of family troubles. With a barely there mother and two amazing grandparents it was easy to know who to root for and I'm happy to see that the resolution with the drug addict mother didn't leave you feeling like she would come back and ruin things later in their lives.
In the end I think that I just realize how much I really love and respect Christina Lauren as an author. Every book I've read of hers has kept me interested from page one and leaves you with a happy and satisfied ending. There's something to be said about a happily ever after and this book did not disappoint.
It feels like it's been such a long time since I've sat and read the majority of a book in one sitting. It helped that I was on a road trip when I started this one, but it went by so quickly - very enjoyable and readable. It was nerdy and funny, sweet and adorable... just such a great mix of everything. Great writing, but it's CLo, so, duh. The characters were definitely the best part of the book - Fizzy is probably the best 'best friend' character I've read in a long long time. All the side characters were great. Of course, loved the main characters too - the relationship build up was believable, love a good enemies to lovers. It was quirky and unique and I just had a great time reading it. What more could you want?

𝐈 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮'𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫: combination fake dating & enemies-to-lovers trope, nerdy-people relationships, or a moral and existential dilemma
𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐝: The premise of this book was really appealing from the start, and I enjoyed the couple of existential crises that I had while thinking “what would I do if this kind of dating app existed?” It’s one of those ethical dilemmas where you wonder if it’s existence does more harm than good and I loved that the book had the added element of making me thing about that.
The supporting characters were top notch in this book. I loved the friendship between the lead (Jess) and her best friend Fizzy—a fun an adventurous romance author that forced Jess out of her comfort zone all while being her biggest and most endlessly devoted cheerleader. Friendship goals. Jess’s 7-year-old daughter Juno was also mischievous and adorable.
On the spectrum of Christina Lauren books, I compare this one to the Unhoneymooners because of the sexy and smart banter and the intimacy between two people who cannot stand each other, but end up in a tangled mess of fake dating.
𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞: The love interest River was an absolute asshole at the beginning and I’m not sure that I ever fully came around to liking him.
