Thank you Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for the chance to read Gone to far by Debra Webb. This author has recently become a favourite of mine as I totally enjoyed her The undertaker's daughter series. For some reason I thought this was the next in that series. However this was book two in the Devlin & Falco series which I had not started. I do recommend reading book one, Trust no one first. Even though, I hadn't read the first book, I found the story riveting and suspenseful. I will be going back to read Trust no one and will be looking forward to the next in the series!
This book just took off, there was little chance to catch your breath. Detectives Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco from the Birmingham (Alabama) police department are still partners about a year after the events in the previous book (Trust No One) when they get drawn into a very complex case. The Assistant DA, Asher Walsh, is found dead in an upmarket tobacconist and bar - shot through the back of the head along with the owner, Leo Kurtz. There is no apparent motive although drugs are suspected to be involved. When they into Walsh’s activities they learn he was working on something with a former BPD officer, now PI, Sadie Cross, and seek her help in the investigation.
Sadie is still trying to put herself back together 3 years after her cover was blown on undercover operation in which she infiltrated the Osorio Mexican drug cartel. Sadie has huge gaps in her memory after ‘losing’ a period of months from her life before being abandoned, injured and emaciated under a railway bridge. She is still trying to work out what exactly happened to her but agrees to help the detectives through her contacts.
Also in the mix is Devlin’s daughter, 13 year old Tori, who is having a hard time at school. One of the bullies fell down the stairs and was seriously injured. Tori and two of her friends were there and they, too, cannot remember exactly how the fall happened. But of course they are all under suspicion. Then the girl dies.
These three strands get drawn inexorably closer together until it all becomes one story. More or less. In the course of the investigation more people die and some stunning revelations are made. Sadie learns more about her past and is shocked by what she learns. What emerges from the murk is a vast criminal conspiracy that reaches into some very high levels indeed.
While I really enjoyed reading this, it was very fast paced, I’m wondering if it was a little too much. There were a lot of characters and plot lines and I had some trouble keeping track of them, uncharacteristically so. Kudos to the author for keeping all these balls in the air. Nevertheless it was a cracking story and I will be keen to see what’s next for Devlin and Falco. Thanks to Netgalley, Thomas & Mercer and Debra Webb for providing a copy to review. My opinions are my own.
Found it entertaining and gripping. Good character and plot development, it kept me interested till the end.
I like the books by this author and liked this one.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
A solid four star read. Good premise. Great characters. Enjoyed the writing style. Plenty of suspense to keep me guessing. It even had a twist that I didn’t see coming. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it.
Still recovering from the case that shattered her family, Detective Kerri Devlin and partner Luke Falco are plunged back in the deep end working a double murder case. Once again they find themselves calling on the services of the traumatised former Boston PD officer Sadie Cross hoping she can dredge her damaged memory for clues. As a task force is formed Kerri receives more devastating news and finds herself spread thinly between her occupational and parental duties.
As the stakes increase Sadie finds strands of her memories beginning to merge but has no idea if they will help. All the three of them know is this is big and likely to get much more deadly unless they can find the the missing links which hold everything together.
Debra Webb is a seamstress, sewing together seemingly unconnected clues just when everything seems impossible. Although I haven't read book one in this, currently, two part series it was no hindrance to my enjoyment of this fast moving but sympathetically written story. Devlin and Falco are a great team and it is easy to sympathise and cheer Sadie along her difficult road to a slightly more normal existence.
I worked out a few clues but nowhere near enough to tie everything together before I was supposed to. I will definitely be in line to buy book three on publication day to continue enjoying this great series.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. This is an excellent book which can be read as a standalone as long as you don't need to have a complete rundown of book one.
Yesssssssss what a emotional roller coaster, gut wrenching and heart wrenching. I read book one, Trust No One, but I have read most if not all of Debra Webb's books. I loved the friendship that has grown from Devlin and Falco's partnership. I was thrilled that Sadie Cross is back in this book and there is growth with her and Devlin. This is a twisty multifaceted ride. We have the death of the new Deputy Director to start off and before we get far Devlin is called to her teenagers school. She is trying to work the murder scene and the pushing/falling incident at her daughters school. As soon as I met "princess" I knew who she was in conjunction with the plot. It was so well done that I didn't feel like a miss. (Sometimes I lose interest when I figure out who/what in a plot). There are various threads being pulled that had my heart hurting and my gut. I wandered with Sadie in her memories, I felt the anger of Devlin as her daughter dealt with school, bullying and oh so much more. Surprise culprits, red herrings jaw dropping culprits and a fabulous ending. Book 3 please. Thank you NetGalley, Thomas Mercer for the arc. I freely share my thoughts and opinion.
Gone Too Far is the second book in author Debra Webb's Devlin & Falco series. Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco have a really tough case to solve in this story. Initially they are dealing with a double homicide. But then things get really complicated. There's so much going on during Devlin and Falco's investigation: drug dealing, murder and kidnapping. This is definitely a real page-turner. Things get really personal for Devlin when her daughter is investigated for an incident at her school. Kudos to Ms. Webb on treating her readers to this super story.
I received an ARC in exchange for a honest review.
This is second in the series. I didn’t read [book: Trust No one] which was the first in this series but read some reviews to catch up
Detective Kerri Devlin and her partner Detective Luke Falco members of the Birmingham Alabama Police Department assigned to the Major Investigations Division are investigating a double homicide of Leo Kurta a shop owner and ‘hot shot’ Deputy DA Asher Walsh (Hmmm what was he doing there?).
While just getting started on this investigation, Kerri Devlin gets call from Brighton Academy that her daughter Tori is involved in an incident at school that left another student in critical condition. The student Brendal Meyer is a bully and while Tori, Sarah and Alice on the staircase hurrying as they were late to class, Brendal mouthed off to them. The next thing, Brendal has fallen backwards down the stairs ~ or was she pushed? The girls all claim they cannot remember what happened.
Later Tori mentions to her mother that she has had other situations where she has had memory loss and it seems to follow after Alice has served her and her friends cookies. Alice is new to the school. She is living with relatives as both her parents recently died. She was at another school but it didn’t work out.
While this is going on Devlin and Falco need to focus on the double homicide.
Former detective Sadie Cross a character from the first book has made an appearance and we are learning more her loss of memory after she went undercover in a Mexican drug cartel.
Hmmm does that loss of memory have a connection?
What seems like isolated situation might be related. Story is packed with so many characters. (I was grateful for the high light feature with Kindle, as I was trying to piece together what was going on with these cases I kept highlighting and then when I reviewed my notes, I said ~ “Ah Ha!”
The pages had me reading at record speed that I was getting whiplash. (I can read fast but sometime miss important details and go~ wait a minute and have to reread.) I liked Kerry’s comment when she was finding out the whole story and said she had to remind herself to breathe! Yikes that was me! Reading the end of this story!
It was a WOW read for me ⭐⭐⭐⭐ + Stars!
I should give 5 starts as I save 5 stars for amazing reads. Hmm this was sure close to an amazing read for me!!!
I am looking forward to the next in the series but my hearts states ~ Best for you to …WAIT a bit!!
Enjoyed reading the ‘Acknowledgements’ but still amazed that author Debra Webb is such a creative writer!!
Thank you NetGalley and Debra Webb for the ARC of Gone Too Far by Debra Webb that I read and reviewed.
I enjoyed the second book in the Devlin and Falco series better then the first. This book grabbed my attention from the start and kept my hooked until the end. I love the Devlin and Falco as partners when they are working a case and I also enjoy the chemistry that sizzles between them that they try so hard to ignore.
This book had a great story that keeps the reader guessing until the end. I had no idea who the killer was until the end of what was behind the killing. I Webb has a great series going on with these two detectives and I can’t wait to see what they will be up to in the next book.
Gone to Far gets five out of five stars from me!
This was a well done mystery. It was good to get to know more about the main characters. I look forward to reading more in this series.
I received an advanced copy of this book from Netgalley in return for my honest review. Thank you for the opportunity.
I enjoyed Ms. Webb’s first story in this series, Trust No One. There was some melodrama and the introduction of a lot of characters, but at the heart of the story, I thought Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco had potential.
Gone Too Far opened roughly a year later. Be sure and not confuse this story for Ms. Webb’s Too Far Gone. The problem was I knew little more about Devlin and Falco. They were still partners. When not working together, he came to her house for meals and had a decent relationship with Tori, Devlin’s daughter. But other than that, there was nothing new about their relationship.
It simply existed.
Besides a big name homicide, the partners turned to Sadie Cross, once again, for information. And more.
Kerri’s daughter, Tori, was in serious trouble, too. But the woo woo and bewitchment was a bit too much for me. I thought this secondary story felt off and was simply a red herring. There were multiple reminders that Kerri felt she was not a good parent. I thought if Tori already suffered severe trust issues at this age, I can’t imagine what problems Devlin will have when she reaches 15, 16 or 17 years of age.
I like Devlin and I like Falco. I am just not sure if I am going to continue with this series.
I would like to thank Net Galley and Thomas and Mercer Publishers for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

There are two things about this author that don´t work for me: her teenager characters and her limited pool of characters.
It was the same with the previous book. The teenagers are unbelievable, and their role is simply to carry on some angst. They are described as clever and responsible girls, but they don´t act like it. Nor do it their families. The author tells us how caring and loving the families are, but they simply let the girls roam around without seeing or even talking to them in a few days and that is supposedly “normal”. I don´t think so. Even less when your aunt is investigating your coworkers for murder.
The other problem is that all the characters have a more or less important role in the suspense. All of them. It feels contrite and forced.
So that said, I think the idea behind the suspense was good. The past came to haunt the characters. And the way the author writes is appealing. I couldn´t stop reading. A pity the end was so hard to believe.
So, this story left me with a bittersweet aftertaste. It wasn´t a bad story but I had the same problems with this author approach as I had the first time around. Maybe her style is not for me.

An intense, thrilling, captivating, and darn right intriguing story that took you into a swirling mess, entangled in drugs, voodooism, greed, jealousy, betrayal, and fear, all deeply rooted in a murder conspiracy. Kerry, Falco, and Sadie made a great team, even with Sadie and Kerry’s emotional upheavals, they left no stone unturned in their search for justice. This book was gripping with many twists and turns, making it a must-read for sure.
Gone Too Far is the second book in the Devlin &Falco Series. This thriller keeps you on the edge of your seat through the whole thing.
Devlin and Falco arrive on the scene to find the new DDA Asher Walsh was murdered. Right before diving into the investigation, Devlin is called to her daughter’s school as she is thought to be involved in a dangerous accident with another student.
This book is a one you won’t want to put down until it’s finished . Thank you Netgalley and the Publisher for a copy for my honest opinion .
This was my first book by this author. It had a complicated case overlapping with a domestic case and resolved it all well. I did guess some of the twists. My only problem was that there were so many characters and many referred to only by their last name and it made for confusing reading for the first quarter of the book or so. almost gave up but it got easier as i went on. having the first name would have made it easier to keep track of.....
For me, this book is ruined by a strange, twisted and highly improbable plot. It's readable, but the entertainment value is close to zero.
Deborah Webb's Devlin and Falco series continues with the second book Gone Too Far. As Birmingham detectives the partners next case is solving a double murder including the murder of a deputy DA. At the same time Devlin is dealing with family problems when her daughter Tori finds herself in a situation where bullying and teenage friends old and new has Mom figuring how to solve the problem. Add in the former undercover cop Sadie Cross and there is plenty of tension, action, and what I found delightful, a real development of the characters first introduced in Trust No One. I can't wait to see where the series takes Devlin and Falco as a team and maybe as a whole lot more. In the meantime in Gone Too Far it's a rush to the end to protect and reesolve a case with a surprising end to a well developed story.
This is the second book in Webb's Devlin and Falco series. The two veteran Birmingham PD officers are assigned the case when the new deputy DA is found dead in a double homicide and a conspiracy must be unraveled. Webb once again writes a story filled with elusive mystery and a host of characters who are not what they seem. On top of the high profile case, Devlin's daughter Tori is caught up in a tragic case of bullying, that tests her devotion to her job and her daughter. Loved Sadie's character and the mystery and many layers of Luke Falco and the dynamic between the two partners. I recommend reading book one first to experience the most out of this story. Definitely worth the read!
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
With an enjoyable cast of characters the second book in this series didn’t disappoint. A double murder, trouble at home, a full plate yet it’s nothing for Devlin and Falco. I look forward to reading more in this series.
Very intriguing story of love and loss. I enjoyed the characters along with the plot. Really good story.
Don't miss it.
