Another great summer read from Mary Kay Andrews! The Newcomer is the perfect mix of suspense and romance. The story is packed with humor and characters that remind you of people you know. The Murmuring Surf felt cozy and warm. This book is a perfect beach read or great if you are looking for a little mystery in a beach town.
I cannot tell you how excited I am to have M. K. Andrews back with a beachy murdery mystery love story! I can't even label this book as a cozy mystery, because that would underscore the quality of storytelling' of this story. The Newcomer is about a young woman who finds home among a community of senior citizen snow birds in an aging seaside motel Near Tampa. Running from the Law with her 4 year old Niece in tow, Lettie is on a life changing adventure to clear her name & save her niece. The story is a little Farfetched at times but it makes the perfect beach or poolside read. I highly recommend when in need of something light & fluffy.
Mary Kay Andrews is one of my favorite authors. Her newest mystery, The Newcomer will leave you anxiously awaiting her next book. In the beginning we find that Letty's sister, Tanya has been murdered and Letty finds herself on the run with Tanya's daughter Maya. They are headed to Florida for a fresh start. They arrive at the Murmuring Surf hotel where Letty gets a job and the two are given a place to stay, As she meets people and becomes accustomed to the drama within the hotel she finally feels like she can let her guard down and relax a bit. Quickly everything changes and the past starts to catch up with her. You only hope that she and Maya will stay safe. Jump into The Newcomer and find out for yourself. You wont be disappointed.!
Mary Kay Andrews can always be counted on to create vivid imagery, characters with depth, and a story that keeps you turning the page, and this book is no exception! I loved the storyline and the interaction between the characters and would love to stay at the Murmuring Surf!
This was a fun summer read.
I’m fairly new to the romantic suspense genre and I’m generally pretty picky. It has to have a good balance of action, romance and suspense. This had it all plus some humorous side characters which was a huge bonus and kept me glued to the pages. There wasn’t anything too complex about it, just an easy, enjoyable, funny read and I will definitely recommend it to those who want to ease into this specific genre.
This was my first Mary Kay Andrews book, but I will definitely be looking through her back list.
Thank you NetGalley and St Martins Press for a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
A number of years ago, I read an entertaining mystery series by someone named Kathy Hogan Trochek. The stories featured Callahan Garrity. She ran a cleaning service as I recall but bodies always seemed to be in the way. I recommend the novels. What is relevant here is that KHT and Mary Kay Andrews are one and the same! This meant that I knew that The Newcomer would feature an involving story line, good plotting and interesting characters. I was not disappointed.
The Newcomer in this story could be looked at as several different people, although I think that it principally refers to Letty. Letty and her sister Tanya grew up in less than stable circumstances. Letty, an aspiring actress, has moved to New York. She meets and gets to know Evan. Not long after, Letty’s sister Tanya joins Letty, thus becoming a newcomer to New York. She proceeds to take over Letty’s boyfriend (Evan) and works as an aspiring model. When something happens to Tanya, Letty flees with Tanya’s little girl. Letty then becomes the newcomer at a Florida motel that is run by a very goodhearted woman. Letty got the name of this motel from Tanya’s belongings.
Why did Tanya keep the clipping on the motel? Who was responsible for what happened to Tanya? Will Letty successfully be blamed by Evan? Will Evan track her down?
Around this, also get to know Joe. He is a cop and the son of the motel owner. Will he figure out Letty’s story? If/when he does, will he then help or harm her?
The fun of reading this book is the sense that everything should mostly work out in the end. This lets readers relax and immerse themselves in a perfect beach book that is partially set at a beach.
I read some of this book and listened to some of it on audio. Both ways were involving and entertaining. The narration of the audio book got me through many a walk in the heat.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.
This was the perfect summer read. I immediately need to go to Florida abs stay at the Murmuring Surf Motel.
It had just enough mix of cozy, heartwarming, and crime.

Thank you to @stmartinspress @netgalley for gifting me an copy of The Newcomer by @marykayandrews. Happy Monday! I had some fun in the sun by the pool today.
I can’t go through summer without reading anything from Mary Kay Andrews. I know when I open an Andrews book I am in for a thrill of a ride with - murder mystery, romance, humor, and a quirky cast of characters. Despite it being a relatively long read (+400 pages) it will fly by. I definitely got lost in the world of The Murmuring Surf and all the wonderful longterm renters. I thoroughly enjoyed this from start to finish.
You must add this to your summer reading list - great addition to your pool and/or beach bag!
I really enjoyed this book. It had me on the edge of my seat most of the book! I would definitely recommend this book! I could not put it down once I started reading it!
Love MKA books so much! This was another great winner by her. She is the queen of summer and I cannot wait for the nxt one!
What do you do if you find your sister dead, murdered by someone? Letty Carnahan discovers her sister Tanya murdered and immediately thinks of her sisters words and what she needs to do. She does exactly as Tanya asked she grabs her young niece and runs. You see Tanya said if anything ever happened to her, her ex Evan would be the culprit. Letty knows she must get far away before Evan knows she has run with Maya but where can she go where he along with the police won't find them. She finds a bag left behind for her by her sister and decides to take a chance by going to the Florida town in a picture she finds in the bag. Letty turns herself into someone new and hopes the town of Treasure Island will keep Maya and herself safe. Follow along as Letty tries to keep them hidden while making a new life for themselves. Can she keep them safely hidden or will a killer find them in the end?
My first Mary Kay Andrews book ever and will definitely not be my last. I loved the mix of mystery, romance, and chick-lit.
While it was longer than any other romance books I’ve read, it was entertaining and I can’t think of anything that could be removed to make it shorter without taking away from the story. The characters and setting at the Murmuring Surf felt cozy and warm. Perfect for a beach read or anytime you’re looking for a little mystery in a cozy beach town.
Many thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for this eARC!
Another great summer blockbuster from Mary Kay Andrews! I enjoyed this one and it made me root for Letty and Maya as they fled to safety and built a new life. I didn’t feel like there were any major reveals or plot twists, but great storyline and satisfying ending!
Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for the complimentary digital review copy of this title.
I was able to review The Newcomer by Mary Kay Andrews and St. Martin's Press for providing me with an advanced ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This story has well developed characters, snappy dialogue and a cleverly crafted mystery. A great beach read.
A very easy to read book! The story was interesting and kept you reading. I would recommend as an easy summer/breach/pool read.
I enjoyed this book, but it couldn’t make up its mind whether it was going to be a mystery, a romance, a southern gothic, or a suspense. It had some very sweet moments, with a setting of an old-timey motel/resort and its owner who take in the young woman, Letty, and her young niece. It had a nice romance between Joe, the owner’s son and Letty. Then there was the on-going drama about Letty’s sister’s murder and the sisters’ ex-husband, not to speak of the mystery of the sister’s past. It was fast-paced and entertaining, so it was a good summer read.
Thanks to St. Martin’s Press and Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for a fair review.
A slow burn, perfect for beach reading. I liked the humor interjected into the plot. I can see myself recommending this one even though it's pretty far from what I normally read.
The Newcomer by Mary Kay Andrews is murder mystery following Letty and her sister Mercedes after Letty discovers her sister Tanya dead. Letty is convinced the killer is Tanya's ex, Evan, so Letty, Mercedes, and Mercede's daughter Maya jump in the car and drive to Florida to try to track down Evan. However with limited leads and a sister with a complicated, secretive life it is not an easy feat, especially when an attractive detective named Joe is involved.
This is the perfect beach read with such a fun murder mystery combined with family antics and a side of romance! I enjoyed the plot and thought it was the perfect amount of complexity without being too obvious. However the characters added some depth to the novel as well. It was lovely to see Letty to support her sister Mercedes and Maya.
As for the romance this book is perfect for those who want a romance subplot without it completely overshadowing the novel. It was the perfect pinch of romance to add to the mystery. However for those that love romance it will not be as deep as other novels. Regardless the murder mystery is the main attraction of this novel and was done so well! The setting was kooky and the motel guests only added to its character. Overall I enjoyed this novel and am definitely looking forward to other books from this author!
Many thanks to the publisher St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for the ARC in return for an honest review.
A wonderful summer beach read. A little romance a little suspense and everything you’ve come to expect. From nary Kay Andrews. Delightful fast paced fun read
Letty flees from NYC with her 4 year old niece after she finds her sister murdered. Her sister had told her "if anything happens to me it is Evan, take Maya and run!" So, Letty and Maya end up at the Murmuring Surf Motel on coastal Florida. Letty had seen the motel mentioned in some of her sister's stuff. There, Letty befriends the hotel owner and her police officer son, Joe. Letty and Maya settle into the motel as Letty tries to figure out her sister's past dealings and what led to her murder. There's an undeniable spark between Joe and Letty that Letty tries to ignore since she doesn't want Joe to discover that she is on the run.
This was a fun beach read that while not 100% plausible was an enjoyable ride with a few twists and turns. I was able to suspend my disbelief for a little bit and just went with it. Sure, the police and FBI agents were kind of not doing their jobs and there were a few coincidences....but I went along for the ride. I would call it a romance mystery. It's got a little bit of both genres in there. This was my first book by Mary Kay Andrews and it was a nice escapist listen to help take my mind off of life. Nothing like a beach read audiobook to help pass the time while cleaning the kitchen or straightening the yard.
