This is a pretty fast paced thriller that follows the lives of Hailey and Beth and their troubles with a psycho serial killer. The two main female characters are beyond awesome. I loved how strong they were, especially Hailey. The sheriff is one of those characters that you just hate and is the perfect bad guy. There was enough action to keep me on the edge of my seat.

I feel exhausted after reading this book, but in a good way. There is tons of action and loads of suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I love that it is a great fictional tale but loosely based on true events. My recommendation...buckle up, hang on and enjoy the ride.

I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley.
This was a terrific fictionalized account of the tragedies that occurred on Highway 16 - The Highway of Tears - in British Columbia. Over the years, many young girls were murdered or missing while hitchhiking or driving along this desolate route. The author pays tribute to these women and provides a thrilling novel at the same time.

Interesting characters, great descriptions of locale, and plenty of suspense. What's not to like?! The writing is excellent and it's interesting how the narrative switches between characters - leaving cliffhangers along the way.
One character seemed like the obvious choice to be the 'bad guy' - - too obvious? Read the book and find out. Shocking twist at the end!
My favorite character was Wolf, the dog!!

I wasn't really a fan of "Dark Roads." The characters and plot just didn't connect with me, so I found it sort of difficult to make it all the way through to the end.

Chevy Stevens has done it again.. I Love her books.
My emotions are all over the place with this book. It is dark, depressing, disturbing story narrated by two unforgettable, traumatized, struggling young girls.
NEVER TRUST ANYONE!!!!
Cold Creek is a small community. The highway has a history of young women going missing that stretches back for years.
Hailey McBride, recently orphaned and gone to live with her aunt and policeman husband. The husband, known as the Ice Man by the local youths, is a controlling bully. Stephens does a great job of getting the cloying nature of the Ice Man’s control exactly right. The book literally made my skin crawl in spots. Given what she’s dealing with, she runs away. Thankfully,
The book shifts to Beth’s point of view. Beth is the older sister of one of the murdered women and comes to investigate. She takes a job waitressing at the same diner as her sister. Her inquiries put her at risk, too.
Of course, my favorite character was Wolf. Although Johnny was pretty special, too. Everyone is well developed.
The book moved at a fast pace and kept me engaged throughout.to keep me on my toes.
I hope you like as much as I have
Enjoy

This story is based on decades of true cold case missing and murdered indigenous women in British Columbiaon the Highway of Tears. In Dark Roads, the town is Cold Creek. Women in the town are warned against traveling this highway after dark. After her father's tragic death in a car accident, Hailey is forced to live with her aunt and uncle. When her uncle Vaugn, a town cop, becomes increasingly stern and controlling, and Hailey discovers a truly disturbing secret, she is forced to escape.
Beth is the sister of one of the victims. Unlike her super religious parents, she can't seem to let the case go cold. Determined to find answers, she travels to Cold Creek to work in the diner Amber worked in. Will she finally discover what happened to Amber or become a victim herself?
I loved this thriller! I honestly couldn't put it down. It's so creepy and disturbing that I found myself constantly watching over my shoulder after dark and jumping at shadows.
I received an advance reader copy of this book through NetGalley and St. Martin's Press. My review is given voluntarily.

Based on the synopsis, I expected Dark Roads would be a home run for me. While this book is described as a “breathtaking thriller” and the prologue about the Cold Creek Highway killer was gripping, the pacing, dialogue, and characters missed the mark.
In the first part of the book, Hailey has moved in with her aunt, uncle and cousin after her father’s tragic death. Hailey’s uncle Vaughn is a police officer who is extremely strict and is constantly watching, following, and threatening her. After Hailey discovers a dark and disturbing secret about Vaughn, she decides to run away to live in the mountains. This is when I started to lose interest in the book, it became too unbelievable to keep my attention. A seventeen year old girl running away into the wilderness with only her dog just didn’t seem plausible to me.
The second part of the book follows Beth as she arrives in Cold Creek to find out more about her sister Amber’s murder.
This isn’t a bad book, the storyline was intriguing but the execution and characters weren’t enough to hold my attention. Based on the reviews, it looks like mine is an unpopular opinion so check this one out if you enjoy slow burn survival stories.
Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Hailey was raised in Cold Creek British Columbia. A quaint, picturesque mountain town known for its striking beauty. And oh yeah…it’s also notorious for a string of unsolved murders of local girls.
After Hailey’s father dies, she’s taken in by her aunt and her husband, a long-serving member of the local police dept. Hailey can’t ignore the creepy, bad vibe she’s getting from him. So unsettling in fact, she’s starting to believe she may actually be safer taking to the wilderness rather than living under the same roof as him.
I loved Hailey’s character. Such a courageous, strong young woman whose survival instincts were amazing. And adored her connection with her trusty dog Wolf. 🐶💖
Chevy Stevens creates a chilling and suspenseful read that’ll keep you engaged throughout.
I was positive I had this one figured out (a few times in fact) only to be surprised by the end. Just the way I like it!

What an awesome book! Very strong female characters in this book which I really like. It’s a thriller with a lot of adventure and some twists. I love Wolf and would love a dog just like him! Definitely worth the read, you will not be disappointed. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I have been waiting for this book by Ms. Stevens for a while and I was not disappointed. It definitely is a psychological thriller but with a bit of a horror vibe to it. Women have been going missing off a remote highway for years and yet they don’t seem any closer to finding the killer.
There are major creep vibes throughout the story and in different ways. Women are both the victims and the heroes of this story which important to note because there is a lot of power in the later.

For decades Cold Creek Highway, nestled between tall trees and rugged terrain, has had dozens of disappearances of young women, only to be discovered brutally murdered. With the killer still at large, women have been warned to never hitchhike or travel down the highway alone. After the death of her father, Hailey's aunt takes her in. She loves her aunt and little cousin, but her aunt's police officer husband Vaughn gives her the creeps. It doesn't help that he has it out for her best friend Jonny. With Vaughn's controlling demands Hailey has no choice but to run away, especially after discovering evidence of a dark and disturbing side to him. After fleeing to the mountains to hide out she's the next person to discover the killer's latest victim.
Beth has no direction in her life anymore ever since her sister Amber was found murdered. She ends up in Cold Creek and somehow takes on Amber's old waitressing position at the local diner. She is desperate to find out what happened to Amber, not realizing that talking to the locals has put her in danger.
This is the first book I've read from this author and I'm blown away! There was so much going on but the story didn't get confusing and I was invested to see if Hailey's assumptions were correct. One of the best books I've read this year.
Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read this book.

Another psych thriller with plenty of twists and surprising that you won't be able to guess. Dual POV. My fav part of Chevy Stevens' books are that they create a twisty thriller while also creating deep characters you feel like you know, which makes you care all the more. Highly recommend this one.

I have to admit that, even as a Canadian reader, I rarely read Canadian content. Over the last while though, I have become a huge Chevy Stevens fan and was overjoyed for her to come out with another winner. This one takes place in northern BC and takes a bit of the setting/storyline from the Highway of Tears. She does a fantastic job of portraying the vastness of the area and the unease of the situation. I was very, very impressed.

What.a.ride! This was small town secrets at it’s finest! I loved the nature aspect. I flew through the first 60% of the book. I mean- couldn’t put it down and was completely enthralled! It lost me in the last 40% as things started getting messy and way too complicated. However, it was an immersive experience and an interesting cast of characters. 3.5 stars. My thanks to the publisher for the advance reader in exchange for my honest review.

Whenever I am looking for a well written creepfest I turn to Chevy Stevens. She writes brilliantly scary thrillers all though fictional border on the possibility of being real and stop me from falling asleep and make me look around each and every corner. We meet Hailey, a strong smart 17 year old who is reeling and mourning the tragic loss of her beloved father. She is living with her aunt and her police officer husband who uses his badge to help support and hide his terribly inappropriate and nefarious behavior. The only way she can see her way out is to run away and hide from him. Where she runs to is a scary dangerous road that many women have gone and disappeared to forever. Does the Uncle have anything to do with it all of the horrors that have happened? Will Hailey stay safe? And what happens when Beth comes to town and starts asking questions? I am not spoiling a thing, but I suggest reading this book with all the lights on!!

This one was so phenomenal!! The narration was fantastic and the storyline kept me really intrigued!! I really appreciated the mention of the atrocity that is happening to missing and murdered indigenous women in Canada. The twists in this one weren’t predictable for me and I really enjoyed them!! Very well done thriller!!

The cover and the blurb for Dark Roads pulled me in, but Chevy Stevens writing kept me engaged through out. I'd listened to a true crime podcast on the highway Dark Roads' plot draws from and when I recognized the similarities I knew I'd be into this book. That podcast has never left my mind, so many unsolved crimes, so I loved that Chevy Stevens gave us a novel that solved a few for us. With three parts and a few different perspectives, Dark Roads is a dramatic, suspenseful tale of the lost souls of Cold Creek Highway and the locals who live in fear of it.
Hailey McBride is a Cold Creek local, she's grown up knowing the tales of the missing, of the found bodies with no killer to pin it on, the rules of the highway. She's spent forever avoiding certain death by a trucker or some other serial killer, but Hailey didn't know Officer Vaughn might be who she really needed to fear. In the care of her Aunt and Vaughn, Hailey is kept from her friends, from the outside world, and with her father on her mind, Hailey snoops and discovers a horrible truth about Vaughn. Hailey must go into survival mode, hoping to trick the town and the dirty cop into believing she has disappeared. In Part Two, we meet Beth, the sister of one of the missing girls. She's unreliable, a recent addict, a former perfectionist, and desperate for the truth. She makes incredibly dumb choices, but it is through her actions that the town begins to wake up, to pay attention. It is through Beth that Hailey's plan begins to play out.
With an eerily realistic storyline, relatable characters, and a mystery you want to solve, Dark Roads is a fascinating and gripping suspense from Chevy Stevens. It does start out a bit slow, repetitive, but it picks up and becomes the kind of page-turning thriller I love.

Based on real events that occurred on the Highway of Tears in Northern British Columbia, this thriller focuses on teen-aged girls who have disappeared from the fictional town of Cold Creek. Some of the bodies were found but most of the cases have never been solved and no one held accountable.
Hailey McBride lives in Cold Creek. An orphan, she now stays with her aunt who is married to a local police sergeant. Although she's 17, she's kept on a very tight leash under the tight control of these relatives. Chaffing under the bullying, she runs away to the mountains and a cabin hidden deep in the woods comfortable knowing that she was trained by her father in survival and resourcefulness in the wilderness. Everything thinks she was a victim of the notorious highway killer who had already murdered another young woman, Amber Chevalier, earlier that year. Months pass and Amber's sister, Beth, arrives in Cold Creek searching for answers and ends up herself in harm's way. NO SPOILERS.
This started out well, but eventually I just had to ask how these two girls could survive so much constant injury and peril. The story didn't focus on bringing the killer to justice as much as it meandered around taking forever to get to the big reveal. Out of nowhere. There's even time for romance, drinking, drugs, camping in the woods, living in the car, and motocross in between all the harrowing situations that Hailey and Beth get themselves caught up in. I was disappointed with the way things wrapped up and don't feel that I got the answers in a payoff that made the read worthwhile. The Epilogue sort of made me shake my head and sort of sealed the 3 stars rating. Nope.
I've read all but one of this author's previous books, and nothing has matched my appreciation for her first book, "Still Missing" but you may find this more appealing than I did. Thank you to St. Martin's Press for this e-book ARC to read and review.

Thank you to St, Martin's Press and Netgalley for an advanced readers copy of this novel for my honest opinion.
I have now read 3 serial killer on the highway books in a row now and am wondering if this is the next it thing in fiction!. The Cold Creek Highway is a dark desolate road in British Columbia that has seen many horrific crimes over the years, most unsolved. This novel follows Hailey, who has grown up in Cold Creek and Beth who comes to grieve her sister's death.
I enjoyed the back and forth perspectives of each chapter to grow the story.. I was surprised by a twist which is always good when you don't see it coming. I was genuinely entertained by this creeper thriller!
