I enjoyed reading this interesting thriller. I wasn't sure who the killer was. It seemed like not much happened in the middle of the book. The book got interesting near the end.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review.
Dark Roads by Chevy Stevens is a totally gripping and truly disturbing novel! This book had me completely hooked from the very beginning and I think I finished it in less than two days.
I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the audiobook while alternating between reading the ebook. The audiobook narrated by Angela Dawe; Brittany Pressley; Isabella Star LaBlanc is excellent! Similarly, Stevens' writing is excellent and so easy to read.
This book is full of distributing content but if you're looking for a thriller packed with suspense, mystery and juicy details, look no further.
Thank you, NetGalley, Macmillan Audio, and St. Martin's Press for a copy of this book for review!
Wow! What a powerful ready by Chevy Stevens. I especially appreciated the Prologue that helped set the story and the letter to the reader at the end that helped show the real context this story was written. Powerful.
Dark Roads is set on Cold Creek Highway in British Columbia where, for decades, young women have gone missing. When Hailey’s father goes missing and her Aunt’s police officer husband becomes too much for her to handle, Hailey vanishes into the mountains. Thought to be another victim to the highway killer, Hailey fights to find the evidence she needs before another girl becomes a statistic.
Great read and highly recommended.

Not my fave Chevy book. The prologue and epilogue were the best. The middle read a bit like a YA book and the main character Hailey really annoyed me. With that said, I still enjoyed it.

It had been too long since Chevy Stevens released new material so I was psyched to receive an early copy. Brilliantly told and gripping from page one. Its more of a young adult book but still very readable.
This is my first book by this author, but definitely won't be my last.
This book had all that I love in suspense/thrillers. Action. Drama. Twist and turns. AND - I didn't guess whodunnit halfway through which to me is a huge plus!
Hailey and Beth - my mama heart felt for both of them and I wanted to take care of them both. Hailey definitely was able to take care of herself (for the most part) and big props to her daddy for teaching her those survival skills. I'm sure he never knew she would need them. Vaughn - wanted to strangle him. He just is one of those men! Jonny didn't seem like a bad kid. A bit lost perhaps. But Vaughn's hatred for him seemed over the top. The young people seemed like a bunch of lost souls who were dealt horrible hands and were just trying to survive. Vaughn gave no assistance to any of them.
And Wolf - my heart! Any book with a dog main character is a winner for me. He was the best friend Hailey didn't realize she needed.
Thanks to Netgalley & St. Martin's Press for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. Now I'm off to find more books by Chevy Stevens!
Dark Roads is loosely based on the many unsolved cases of the Highway of Tears in Northern British Columbia where women have gone missing or been murdered since the 1970’s. Although this book is a work of fiction, Chevy Stevens has written a chilling, unpredictable tale about the deaths of women on a similar stretch of highway.
The story is written from the points-of-views of two women whose lives are brought together as the book develops. I was hooked on this book after reading the prologue and found it difficult to put down. Dark Roads will keep you up late into the night reading.
This is the first book I have read by author, Chevy Stevens, but it will not be my last. I enjoyed Chevy’s writing style and felt the book flowed perfectly.

I read Stevens’ backlist title, Still Missing, when it came out in 2014 and really enjoyed it so I picked this up when I was in the mood for a fast-paced thriller. And while I didn’t like this one quite as much, it definitely satisfied my craving. A little long in parts, the plot moved quickly and I didn’t guess the ending, plus the characters were well thought out and likeable. I read it in one day, which is always a satisfying feeling.
Based on the fact that I finished this book in less than 24 hours, I have to say I loved it. I knew I was in for a ride when the book started with the voice of a dead woman. Meeting Hailey and her ignorant uncle Vaughn kept me hooked. Hailey was an amazing, strong woman but I was really glad she had Jonny and Wolf on her side. The tension never let up (hence my finishing it so quickly) and there is a very satisfying conclusion. There are some difficult parts to read but they only make you appreciate Hailey and Beth more. Such great characters- can we have a sequel?
Let me start by saying that this was a really good book! I was so tempted to give if 5 stars but I had to deduct something just for the times that the POV changed but it wasn't quickly clear who it had changed to. Other than that, it was a thrilling, haunting, mysterious and dangerous story that kept my interest throughout. The writing was great, descriptive and captivating. It was easy to picture the story and all of the sights, sounds and smells which is a sign of a good book to me. With that being said, some of the descriptions of violence were almost a little too graphic given that it was written in a way that was easy to picture. Yet I feel like maybe they had to be written that way too convey the strength and impact of the story line.
Hailey McBride calls Cold Creek home. Running through the town and many miles past it is the infamous Cold Creek Highway. Notorious for being a prime location for murderers and abductors, the females of Cold Creek know all too well the dangers that lurk for them on the highway.
Suddenly orphaned, Hailey spends her time living with her Aunt and her husband who happens to be a local police officer. Slowly things start to get weird with the husband. Mixed feelings, obscure behaviors, aggressive tendencies, inadvertently found pictures all cause Hailey to run for the woods. Then another murder and Hailey is certain she know who the murderer is. But does she really? And who else will get tangled in the web of destruction before justice is found, if it ever is?

This is definitely an interesting and "creepy" story that focuses on a highway where women tend to mysteriously disappear. It is told through the eyes of two characters: Hailey, who is trying to escape her woeful living conditions, and Beth, who arrives in the small town where Hailey lives looking for clues/answers to who killed her sister Amber (who just so happened to be the love of Hailey's life). The story has great atmospherics, but most of the middle of the novel -- the parts about Hailey's and Beth's being in the woods -- seems way too drawn out and thus makes the novel too long. After a sort of twist-and-turns section in which the serial killer is revealed, the final pages seem a bit too unrealistic, and thus the ending disappoints for that reason.
All in all, though, this was a very entertains read, just maybe not one of Chevy Stevens' better novels. I have usually enjoyed her work, and I look forward to her next endeavor!
I received this from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review. A great psychological thriller set in the dark roads of British Columbia. The question is who is the murderer and Hailey wonders if she is living with him? Many twists and turns and good characters.
Disappearance of indigenous women along the northern Canadian region has been happening throughout the years as portrayed in this novel. Right away, readers will have strong reactions to Vaughn and his relationship with Hailey, his niece. Hailey's survival skills are amazing but a little unrealistic at times. I loved Wolf and felt that he added much to the drama. Some twists that will kept readers guessing to the end. Recommended.
Dark Roads follows the story of Hailey and Beth. Hailey has recently lost her father and finds herself living with her aunt who is newly married to Vaughn, the local police officer who gives everyone problems. Hailey wants to dug up some dirt on Vaughn, but what she finds might be more than she bargained for.
A year later, Beth arrives in town searching for answers surrounding her sister's death. Will Beth find the answers that she is looking for?
Dark Roads is a decently entertaining thriller that should have been about half of its length. Also, there was way too much talk about dirt bikes which was brought up a whopping 63 times in this book. The writing seemed a bit off at times meaning there were some sections that weren't even clear what had happened. That being said, Dark Roads had strong female characters, and I enjoyed that it didn't go down the typical romance path. The author was great, but this book would have benefited from a different editor.
Overall, a fairly decent thriller which was page turning at moments but the writing needs to be cleaned up a bit more.
*Thank you, NetGalley, for a free copy of this book in exchange for my fair and honest opinion.
I loved this book! It was action packed up to the very end. I loved how the author used the multiple POVs for this storyline and how she brought them together. I will definitely be reading more by Chevy Stevens in the future.
Chevy Stevens writes incredible, suspense, not-to-be-missed novels.
Hailey McBride lives in Cold Creek, where there have been many murders of young women along the highway that runs through the town. Hailey has just lost her father, to whom she was incredibly close. She is now staying with her aunt and her husband, Vaughn. Vaughn is the town's police chief. He is especially controlling and forbids Hailey to do most everything, including hanging out with her long-time friend, Jonny and her newest friend Amber. So, when Hailey discovers something unimaginable, about Vaughn, she realizes that she must make herself disappear in order to stay alive. She sets off into the woods to survive on her own with the skills that her beloved father has taught her. A stray dog, Wolf, becomes her companion throughout her time in the woods.
A year later, Amber's sister, Beth comes to town to find out what happened to her sister. Soon, everyone is suspect. Is Vaughn the serial killer? Does he know who the serial killer is? This is a compelling, edge-of-your-seat novel. Loved it!
I raced through this one in a couple sittings. It's an ugly and very real look inside a small town with a dark history. Cold Creek certainly has it's creepy past. Girls gone missing for decades, warnings to stay away from the dark lonely roads, don't hitchhike, watch your back, stay away from strangers (or maybe even someone known to you). It includes plenty of suspicious characters and one very mean cop. You easily fall into the pages and feel every detail of this back roads, small town world. I was hooked from the first page. I absolutely loved bad ass Hailey, brave Beth, fierce and protective Jonny, and Wolf, the dog!!
Pick this one up, dive in, and be prepared not to come up for air until you are finished!
I realize that I am in the minority here with my review. This story just did not do it for me. The entire book just seemed to be thrown together by several different people who did not talk to one another about the story that they were putting together. It was all a little disjointed and well, it came down to the fact that I just did not care what happened.
My thanks to Netgalley and St Martin's Press for this advanced readers copy. This book is scheduled to release August 3, 2021.
A lot surprises! There are a lot of questions on who you can trust. I liked the main characters. Hailey was such a strong character. Beth was so relatable. I was surprised with the mystery. The story started off a little slow for me, but about a quarter of the way through I started to turn pages faster and I wanted to find out the answers. I found the ending satisfying. I enjoyed the story from the viewpoints of both Hailey and Beth. I will definitely look for more books by Chevy Stevens. I received an advance copy from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Another great Chevy Stevens book!
This is the story of Hailey, who lost both of her parents and has to move in with her aunt and her husband, a local cop who locals not-so-lovingly call the Iceman.
Cold Creek, where they live, is infamous for the women that have disappeared along the highway, and Hailey's uncle trying to "keep her safe" is seriously impeding her teenage life. Until she realizes that he is keeping some big secrets and she runs away.
Then, the story follows Beth, a woman who lost her sister to the highway killer. Beth is now suffering from addiction and has given up her dreams and is hoping to figure out what happened.
While I will say that there were some minor plot points that seem oversimplified, I really enjoyed this book. It kept me on the edge of my seat and I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. Thank you to the author and netgalley for a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
