Dark Roads is the second book I've read by Chevy Stevens. I have really enjoyed both! I plan to get caught up on all her books and she'll be on my must read list! I thought the pacing was great, the multiple narrators worked well and the plot moved along quickly. Great story, I'd definitely recommend!
I am sorry for not reviewing fully but I don’t have the time to read this at the moment. I believe that it wouldn't benefit you as a publisher or your book if I only skimmed it and wrote a rushed review. Again, I am sorry for not fully reviewing!
I had a bit of trouble getting into this book. It just moved a bit slow for me and the Vaughn character was exaggerated and despicable he felt like a caricature. I enjoyed it more once the POV shifted to Beth since he wasn't as much pf a focus in that part of the story. I guess overall I thought the book was fine. Not good, not bad, just ok.
Dark Roads is an intense story with lots of twists. The characters will draw you into their lifes and You'll feel their sorrows and pain, their determination to find justice. Keep guessing until the end.
I've been waiting I feel like for years to get another Chevy Stevens book!!
I loved the dark and atmospheric feel to Dark Roads. The setting was eery and spooky just the way that I love my books.
Cold Creak Highway where girls go missing and are murdered? What more can you want in a thriller. I was eager to see where this dark and creepy serial killer was going to take us. I also liked how the author's note said it was loosely associated with The Highway of Tears.
My only issues were that I felt it dragged on a bit during the survival and woodmanship piece. I was pretty bored during these parts. But, Stevens is such a talented writer and she hooked me from page one!
Fun suspenseful thriller to add to your list!
4/5 stars
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
This book was pretty good for me, a strong female lead and a wonderful heroic dog. the subject matter, that of missing and murdered girls is a hard one. The second heroine, wasn't as believable, as the grieving sister of one of the victims, she was damaged and destructive and made a lot of mistake, as well as displayed courage. Would justice be claimed at the end
This is a must read for everyone’s list. Dark Roads depicts a dark subject area while highlighting the importance of keeping vigilant at all times. The story twists and turns until the end, keeping you wondering what could possibly be next.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC.
There is just something about small town mysteries. I love the quirky characters, the vibe in the town, everybody thinks they know everyone else's business, and the scenery is usually exceptionally beautiful. This is most definitely the case with this book. I felt like I was surrounded by the town and its people, like I was walking around the town myself. This means the book is well written.
The story is interestingly different. I like it that the main character is a smart teenager, who knows what she is doing. Never underestimate people who have gone through a rough time. Some of the things might feel a bit out there, but there are always exceptions, and people who manage to do the weirdest and greatest things.
I think this book would make a good film. It has the vibes of Twin Peaks, but in a more modern way. There is always something about a book set around creepy things happening around a dark road to nowhere...
If you only read one thriller this summer, then I highly recommend that Dark Roads by Chevy Stevens is the one you pick up!
I have been a long time Chevy Stevens fan, and her newest novel does not disappoint at all. Stevens takes readers to the small town of Cold Creek, surrounded by wilderness and a highway and the townspeople live in the shadows of a series of murders of women (have you heard of the Highway of Tears in northern British Columbia?).
The characters that Stevens creates are very well developed and certainly evoked many feelings in this reader. There is an excellent battle of good vs. evil, a story of wilderness survival, a mystery that I didn't solve, and a wonderful setting that was very atmospheric. While Still Missing is still my favourite novel by Stevens, Dark Roads is a close second. I could not put it down! Also, in my opinion, Stevens writes the very best canine characters - I loved Wolf!
Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for an ARC in exchange for review.
Chevy Stevens does it again with a top notch, suspenseful tale! This particular story has the feel of a female version of Deliverance, with a twist of survival in the wild, domestic suspense and friendship to last a lifetime. I enjoyed the character development in this story and depth of story building. The setting of Chevy Stevens' stories are always beautiful and wild in my mind, as I assume she builds off the knowledge of the area she lives and experiences in her own every day life. Her characters and their interactions with each other, elicits feelings of wanting to fight along side the good guys, wanting to protect the female protagonist and making sure justice is served. Don't miss this one!
Unpopular opinion…
This book just wasn’t for me but that doesn’t mean you should pass it up. I’ve kinda been in a book funk and that could have potentially been where it all went wrong. I may revisit this week one again at a later date.
This undoubtedly is going to be one of my favorite reads for this year that kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end. I was so afraid for all the female protagonists in this book. The story takes place in Cold Creek where there have been numerous female murder victims over the years who had been hitchhiking along the highway that crosses British Columbia. Seventeen-year-old Hailey McBride, who was raised by her father to be an outdoors survivalist, lost her father to a car accident. She goes to live with her aunt Lana, her 6-year-old nephew Cash and her aunt's new husband, RCMP officer Eric Vaughn, who is known by Vaughn. It does not take Hailey very long to realize that Vaughn is a real controlling creep.
The latest victim was Amber Chevalier who was working as a waitress at Mason's Diner. A year later, her sister Beth comes to Cold Creek seeking answers about her sister's murder, and she takes a job at the same diner. I love Chevy Stevens' books and this did not disappoint.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC of this scary page turner that I read in record time in exchange for an honest review.
The Cold Creek Highway is a dangerous stretch of road where women have been known to go missing. No killer has ever been caught for these disappearances. After losing her dad to a motorcycle accident, Hailey is left to live with her aunt and her husband. She disappears into the woods, hoping that everyone will think she's run away. Instead the town believes that she's been abducted and killed. While in hiding, Hailey makes it her mission to catch the killer and bring him to justice.
I really liked the idea of this story, but I felt like the pace was too slow to keep my interest. I was invested enough in Hailey's story to read through to the end, but I didn't look forward to picking it back up. The ending finally picked up a little bit and included a great twist that I never saw coming.
Dark book that makes you want to know what is going on. The characters draw you In.
The storyline sad but so well written. So much going on keeps you wanting to not put this one down.
Such a great read.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for an early release of this book.
What an amazing thriller. I couldn’t put this book down. Hailey McBride is one tough cookie and I loved her dog Wolf! Hailey had been orphaned recently and sent to live with her Aunt and Uncle. Her Dad had been killed in a vehicle crash. Hailey’s best friend was Jonny Miller and they rode dirt bikes together and Jonny was good enough to go pro with his racing. They lived in Cold Creek and it had a highway that ran through the town that girls were being murdered on. Everyone one knew not to be by yourself or hitchhike that highway.
Hailey had several problems with her Uncle Vaughn that was a cop. The locals called him Iceman! He was controlling and physically a little rough with her. Hailey tells her best friend Amber about Vaughn and suddenly Amber becomes missing. Hailey and Jonny are working to get Hailey away from Vaughn. This is where the book will have you biting your nails and hoping that Hailey can outwit Vaughn!
I loved all the details of out in the wilderness and the planning that Hailey did. Her Dad had taught her how to definitely live off the land and take care of herself but she still was just a you g girl.
Beth arrives which is Amber’s sister and she wants to get to the bottom of Amber’s murder. She gets involved with Jonny to help her but she has a problem with alcohol and pills.
I didn’t figure the killer out until the end which was awesome and I did like the ending very much! Very suspenseful but great thriller.
I received this ARC for free from Netgalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
"Dark Roads" is my first Chevy Stevens book, and based on this first read and other reviews this will not be my last!
I really enjoyed the main characters in this book, Hailey and Beth, and that the story alternates between narration by both. I read and watch a lot of true crime and I can honestly say that the way the story unfolds will keep you on the edge of your seat! There is a twist, of course, but this one genuinely surprised me unlike a lot of other books in this genre where you can see the reveal coming a mile away.
There were two things that I appreciated most about this book. First, as others have mentioned, I liked that there was some element of romantic relationships but it wasn't the main focus of the plot and the way some relationships were addressed at the end was very realistic and adult. Second, the author took her time describing details and scenes and characters thoughts but never lingered too long, specifically with Hailey's character. It could have been really easy to spend too long in the scenes in the woods but I never felt like I needed to skim over like I have with other books.
I really enjoyed this read and will absolutely be picking up another Chevy Stevens book asap! Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I am giving this 4 stars I think but with a few caveats. I read Those Girls by Chevy Stevens a few years ago and it has very much stuck with me. It's dark and disturbing but something about the characters resonated with me, so I was really excited to get this ARC. I have not read any of Stevens's other books, so perhaps this is a coincidence, but they seem to be quite heavy on the 'trauma porn' particularly pertaining to sexual assault and basically, torture of women.
In addition I'd be interested to see an indigenous perspective on this book, as it's heavily inspired by the real highway where indigenous women go missing, and I believe all the characters in this book are white. I can't speak for the community but that did make me a little bit uncomfortable.
Aside from all of that, I couldn't put the book down and I was gripped from start to finish hence my four star rating!
Wow! Once I started this one I had to finish. Took me two days! I loved the way it was wrote in parts with POVs of each character. I had an idea about who I thought it was but I was surprised in the end. I love any thing that Chevy Stevens writes, this one is definitely one that needs to be read. Thanks Netgalley for the opportunity to read early!
Creepy!!! Teenage Hailey lives with her aunt and uncle after the sudden death of her father. Her uncle Vaughn is the local Sheriff, nicknamed "The Iceman" due to the hardline he takes with everyone in their small town. His niece gets much of his unwanted attention. Not wanting her to ride her bike to the lake down the Cold Creek Highway which is notorious for the disappearance of young women. Nor is she to see her best friend, Johnny, who Vaughn believes to be a common thief and all around bad influence. Before he even really gets a chance to pass judgement on Hailey's new girlfriend, she disappears. Hailey starts taking a closer look at Vaughn and doesn't like what she's finding. In response she runs away to live in the mountains like her father had taught her to do.
And from here it gets really hard not give away too much. But I will say Beth appears in town to try and find closure after the death of her murdered sister. In doing so she attracts unwanted attention.
The characters in this book are authentic, the setting tangible, the writing is spot on, the pacing is quick, the ending explosive, and there's an awesome dog, Wolf, who plays a significant role as well: what's not to love!
Many thanks to #NetGalley and St Martin’s Press for providing me with an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
This story seemed to take the long way around before getting to the meat of the story. I did enjoy Dark Roads which felt more YA to me but the story really did not pick up until the last 25% of the book. I loved the last 25%.
