I really enjoyed Chevy Stevens’ latest novel. It is well-paced and kept me engaged throughout. I also loved “Still Missing” and eagerly await Chevy Stevens’ next novel! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced reader’s copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
One heartache after another is what Hailey had to deal with...the death of her mother, then a few years later the death of her father.
With no other relatives, Hailey had to live with her aunt and her husband.
Having to live with her aunt and her creepy husband, Vaughn, who doesn't let Hailey do anything outside of the house might be proving to be even worse than the death of her parents.
Once She finds out a secret about Vaughn and learns that girls have gotten murdered on the main highway, she makes her decision to leave.
No one has any clue who the perpetrator is, but Hailey is determined to find out.
We follow Hailey as she escapes the house and lives in the forest. There was a lot of survival information that took away from the suspense for me.
We also meet Beth whose sister was murdered and was Hailey's friend.
Beth has come to Cold Creek to try to find out what happened to her sister.
Hailey and Beth work together to figure out who is murdering all these girls even though they don’t trust each other at first.
The characters are all a bit on the dark side and most aren't likeable. The title is perfect for this book.
DARK ROADS did drag for me, and I skimmed through some of the pages.
This isn't my favorite book by Chevy Stevens, but I do have to say it did get suspenseful toward the end. 3/5
This book was given to me by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was my first experience with a Chevy Stevens book, so I came in with no expectations. I love a good thriller, but in general, it's hard for me to find ones that truly knock my socks off. I thought Dark Roads was a solid mystery/thriller, but it wasn't quite the knock my socks off thriller that I love.
I am so glad Chevy Stevens decided to write this novel and bring more attention to the Highway of Tears, though I was expecting it to mirror more closely the real-life murders there. Instead, the horrors were much closer to home. This was a quick and interesting read that caught my attention from the beginning. I'd definitely pick up more of Chevy Stevens's work.
I received an ARC copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. I have loved every book I read by this author but I was really disappointed in this one.
After losing both of her parents, 17 year old Hailey goes to live with her aunt and uncle. Her uncle, Vaughn, is the sergeant in the small town of Cold Creek where they live. Vaughn is creepy and is in everyone's business all the time. There have been young women killed along the Cold Creek Highway and Hailey suspects her uncle. When Hailey sneaks into his office and finds pictures of naked girls, she is more determined to catch him.
I felt like this book read like a story for young adults and I also felt like so many of the dangerous situations that Hailey and her friend Beth got into were not believable.
Books rarely sit with me long after I turn the last page. This one stuck around for some time. While books are written long before they are published, this one is even more poignant in 2021. From the main character, the town, and the surprise who- actually- did- it, this novel is a perfect weekend read. Why the weekend? You will not want any interruptions. Go CanLit!
Really enjoyed this, as I always do reading anything by Chevy Stevens. Through the beginning, I kept thinking I was being led to believe who the perpetrator would be, but it was much more than that, and a beautiful set up for a great ending. I don’t want to give anything away, but a nice extra was the wonderfully descriptive forest setting.
I loved this new book, Dark Roads, by Chevy Stevens. It has to be one of my favourites of her titles, so far. Maybe its because I'm Canadian, and can relate to the storyline. ( We have many Indigenous woman missing along the Highway of Tears in B.C.) Anyone who doesn't know about this highway, must be living under a rock.
So I think this was where Chevy Stevens, decided it would be a great backdrop for her story to start. Changing names of course. This book gripped me from the beginning to the end. Dark Roads is a definite must read for anyone that loves a good story-- and a surprise ending!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read Chevy Stevens book.
Great story! The prologue sucked me right in. This author is a great story teller! Highly recommend!
I wanted to love this book. I really did. I saw all the reviews, I love the author. Something about it just didn't work for me. I don't know why or what it was exactly, but I did not love it.
I loved the characters. The POV switching and timelines were off for me and they are not typically. It felt like I was reading a movie script - which may be a goal for the author, but It threw me off some.
I appreciated the ending and the overall plot, it just didn't grab me.
Chevy Stevens does it again! Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I love everything CS does, and Dark Roads might be my new favorite of hers. She weaves such an intricate tale, full of red herrings that have you guessing the whole way. Right toward the end, I realized what was happening, and was on the edge of my seat, unable to read fast enough to find out how everything would play out.
I will always recommend CS to thriller lovers, and especially her latest!
The Highway Killer has preyed on young women hitchhiking or broken-down on the Cold Creek Highway in the wilds of British Columbia for years. Hailey McBride grew up in Cold Creek with a loving father who taught her everything she needed to know about loving and surviving in the wilderness. When he died, leaving her with her aunt, Hailey finds herself watched constantly, forbidden to hang out with friends or even leave the house. As she uncovers connections between her Aunt's creepy cop husband and recent disappearances, Hailey goes missing.l Enter Beth Chevalier, a young woman trying to find her missing sister, Amber, a friend of Hailey's. As Beth comes closer to the truth of what is going on in Cold Creek, she finds herself in jeopardy as well. Chevy Stevens has written a thrilling and suspenseful mystery. Fans of C. J. Box will enjoy the story as will anyone who enjoys a great mystery. Thanks to Net Galley for the ARC!
Can't thank NetGalley enough for an advance read of "Dark Roads", since I've been a fervent Chevy Stevens fan since reading "Still Missing" and all her subsequent thrillers. I couldn't wait to inhale it at light speed.
And once again, she doesn't disappoint with this one, where she took her inspiration from British Columbia's infamous "Highway Of Tears", a long, long lonely stretch of road where many young women have disappeared and later found brutally raped and murdered.
Fictionalized into the 'Cold Creek' highway, the book concentrates on two very different young women whose paths cross in the Canadian wilderness landscape - and whose paths also cross with the homicidal deranged deviate responsible for abducting , assaulting and killing girls all along the length of the highway..
17 year old Hailey lost her beloved father in a car accident. With her mother long gone, she ends up in the care of her aunt and to Hailey's everlasting misery, her aunt's loathsome police officer husband, Vaughn.. Vaughn's an threatening, overbearing bully who seems to rule and control the town as if it's his own personal kingdom., and creepily dominates Hailey like she's his newly inherited piece of property..
Beth is a a grief stricken young woman who's arrived in the highway's isolated, forbidding town in search of answers about the horrific slaying of her sister Amber - the latest victim found on the Cold Creek highway. (and who'd been a loving girlfriend to Hailey. before disappearing).
And that's all I would want to reveal here, since all the fun of reading a great thriller comes from investing in the characters as they plunge into all the twists and turns of the story.. And "Dark Roads" is one great thrill ride, especially if you want to read about fiercely strong and resourceful women up against some truly scary formidable threats to their lives.
As a constant Chevy Stevens reader, I knew sooner or later there'd be a nasty, surprise twist somewhere down the road, and once again, she absolutely came through with it. And I love the way that the natural beauty of the Canadian woods, lakes and rivers becomes as ominous and frightening as any big city dark alley.
The suspense and overall atmosphere of dread is top notch here, you'll worry yourself no end for the fate of the two girls and fearfully cringe every time that hateful, menacing Officer Vaughn pops up.. It's simply another 5 star Chevy Stevens winner, with the added bonus of a surprisingly heartfelt, affecting epilogue as well. You can never have enough stay-up-all-night thrillers, so here's one more that ought to go to top of everyone's TBR pile.
First, I'll admit I love everything Chevy Stevens writes. This book was no different and I had no doubt. I can't give a review without giving too much away. But please don't skip this one, it's better than ever. It's dark, it's thrilling, and it's got twists you didn't see coming. Please keep them coming, Ms. Stevens.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I am a huge Chevy Stevens fan so to be able to read and give an honest review was so exciting for me, I just wish I felt that way about Dark Roads.
The beginning had me, I was engrossed and then little by little it fell flat for me. I found it to be to wordy, a lot of paragraphs were just not needed. I especially didn’t like and found it confusing when a different character and/or situation came out of nowhere, it should’ve been a new chapter all together. I also felt the epilogue to be confusing and not at all needed.
The one thing that sticks with me now after reading Dark Roads is you never know who you can trust.
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to read this book for an honest review, I give Dark Roads by Chevy Stevens 3.5 stars.
Hailey McBride lives in Cold Creek, a town known for a stretch of road where many people have gone missing without explanation. Hailey runs away into the wilderness with training form her dad to escape her controlling uncle. Beth Chevalier learns that her sister has been murdered and goes to Cold Creek to figure out what happened. The book progresses through the perspective of both girls. They both seek to find out what happened to Amber and who is responsible.
This was the first Chevy Stevens book I have read, and I was impressed! I really enjoyed the development of both characters and how things intertwined. This book left me guessing until the end.
From the prologue to the epilogue, the author made me want to read as fast as possible. It was creepy and suspenseful. I loved the different viewpoints of the two female characters and their strength of mind and determination in not falling prey to the evil that existed in their hometown where young women were viciously murdered. The women, each in their separate way, tried to find the killer and often put their lives at risk. They knew they needed to avoid the dark roads and especially the highway along their town of Cold Creek. But for these women, avoidance was not always possible when danger was hiding in plain sight.
The author was actually inspired to write this novel by the events that took place in British Columbia and what became known as the Highway of Tears. Since the 1970s, many Indigenous women were murdered or went missing. Currently, many cases have not been solved leaving many families without closure. By writing this book, the author wanted to change that outcome. The last few chapters were intense but also satisfying.
An ARC was given for an honest review.
I fell in love with this novel from the first page. CHEVY STEVENS novels always touch a cord with me as I live in British Columbia the province where "Dark Roads" takes place. I have always heard stories about the "highway of tears", and STEVENS fictional take on crimes from the area was so enticing. I thought I knew who the "bad guy" was but was so surprised in the end. This is a must read.
What an interesting concept for a book. I really enjoyed the story.
The twists and turns of the plot were not in the least bit contrived as sometimes thrillers will be.
The story loosely follows a series of real murders that occurred in Canada of First Nations women and continue to be unsolved. In the case of this novel, however, we have it wrapped up all in a nice package thank god. Though I know its not the real truth, finding the end of a book brings no answers would not make me happy with the author!
The protagonist is a young woman named Hailey who has just recently lost her father. Through the book, she comes closer to finding out who is at fault for the deaths that continue to rock the small town where she lives, ending with driving her to leave town and live in an abandoned cabin nearby.
The book was very interesting and I thought surprisingly inclusive and thoughtful of different viewpoints and sexual orientations. Please read this book if you need something that is dark and thrilling as a great summer read!
Dark Roads certainly is bleak and depressing. For decades young women have gone missing from the Cold Creek Highway in remote British Columbia, the setting of the novel. Where Dark Roads excels is in the distinctive mood it sets-everything feels gloomy, shadowy, and well...dark. Dark Roads also has more gumption than many murder mysteries-hardscrabble characters and strong female leads. There's no knight in shinning armor to save the day-it's the women (and one very charismatic dog!) who steal the show. Dark Roads is inspired by the actual "Highway of Tears" in Canada where women have been killed or disappeared for almost 50 years. While most of Dark Roads is grim, the epilogue is moving and uplifting. Dark Roads is both fast paced and methodical-not an easy feat to pull off. It's only flaw is in the revelation of the killer-it happens so fast blink and you may miss it. But don't miss reading Dark Roads. It may not brighten your day but it will engage it.
Ms. Stevens’ characters were so well drawn that I cared about every single one of them, not all in a good way. Some I wanted to put my arms around and comfort while others I cared about only because I wanted them to get their due. The book had me on the edge of my seat, in part, because of the despicable behavior of some key characters. Ultimately, it's a story of survival. Survival in a small town run by a cop who makes it difficult to get to the truth. Survival in nature. Survival from man. All of it made for very tense reading. I loved Wolf and felt great empathy for Hailey. My only quibble was that, as strong as Beth purported to be, she was portrayed as very needy when it came to a very new relationship with Jonny. A small nit with the book, however. A quick read because I couldn’t put it down. Thanks to NetGalley for this advance copy.
