Ms. Stevens’ characters were so well drawn that I cared about every single one of them, not all in a good way. Some I wanted to put my arms around and comfort while others I cared about only because I wanted them to get their due. The book had me on the edge of my seat, in part, because of the despicable behavior of some key characters. Ultimately, it's a story of survival. Survival in a small town run by a cop who makes it difficult to get to the truth. Survival in nature. Survival from man. All of it made for very tense reading. I loved Wolf and felt great empathy for Hailey. My only quibble was that, as strong as Beth purported to be, she was portrayed as very needy when it came to a very new relationship with Jonny. A small nit with the book, however. A quick read because I couldn’t put it down. Thanks to NetGalley for this advance copy.

While the premise of this book sounded like something I would really like, it was very slow moving and I didn’t connect with any of the characters.

Oh my goodness! I was completely enthralled by this book that told the story of teens in danger and how they survived. Hailey McBride is from the little town of Cold Creek, a town that is along the Cold Creek Highway. This highway is the “dark road” in the title and is a place that you don’t want to go down alone since young women disappear here. Hailey is newly orphaned and has to live with her aunt and her husband Vaughn, a police officer who is a controlling bully towards Hailey. His methods of controlling Hailey finally end up with her deciding to run away and survive in the wilderness alone. After all, her dead father had taught her survival skills, so Hailey is sure that she will be better off alone than living in the house with Vaughn. My favorite part of the book was when Hailey got the dog she named Wolf and trained him. Wolf really spoke to my heart because he was so intuitive about Hailey’s needs and warned her of danger repeatedly. Another teen protagonist is Beth, the sister of a victim who was murdered along the highway and who comes to town to find answers about Amber’s death. Beth is determined to find the truth, but the price of finding it may be too high for her and for Hailey. I really enjoyed the fast-pace, the characterization that seemed to be believable as well as unique. The plot was suspenseful with all of the sub-plots about the girls and the highway tied together well. This was an intriguing and brilliantly written page-turner that fans of suspense thrillers will not want to miss!

Haileys dad taught her how to survive in the woods. When he tragically dies, she ends up living with her aunt and her husband who is controlling as all get out. Hailey begins to suspect that he could have something to do with the women that continue to go missing and show up dead from the local highway. Thank goodness her dad taught her the woods, because now she must escape into them to get away from Vaughn.

Oh man Vaughn was the absolute worst person in the entire world, I absolutely hated him. Pretty much every scene he was in had me cringing while reading! I was completely not prepared for the twists in this one, or the arrival of Beth. Beth bugged me a little because she was so naive and kept putting herself in harms way, but I understood her want behind finding out what happened to Amber. Wolf was by far the best character in this book! I want my own Wolf! My friend told me the day after I read this that her young teenager snuck out and how mad she was. My response was, she needs to read this book, it will scare her straight! It certainly made me question driving deserted roads late at night by myself!

Dark Roads is my very first Chevy Stevens book and it was a dark, creepy first visit into her world that I thoroughly enjoyed. This is a tale of missing woman, on the fictional Cold Creek Highway in Northern BC Canada over a period of years. Most have been warned not to hitchhike, but not all have disappeared that way. Dead bodies have been found, but no leads have been discovered so women are obviously on edge.

In the town of Cold Creek, seventeen-year-old Hailey McBride is mourning the death of her father and is hating her new living conditions with her aunt and her husband Vaughn, the local town cop who is referred to as “Ice Man.” Right off the bat he creeped me out. He had a maleficent vibe about him and was always in Hailey’s business as well as her best friend Jonny’s. She and Jonny have been friends since they were young children, and he is now the only person she can trust. Her father taught her to love and respect nature, to live in the elements and all that entails. When she realizes that Vaughn is secretly photographing her in her bedroom and bathroom, she decides to run away and live in the wilderness. She and Johnny hatch a plan to make it look like she was taken by the serial killer.

Hailey’s new friend, Amber, a waitress at the town diner, also disappears and a year later Amber’s sister Beth appears looking to find answers. Beth is still mourning her sister and is in no shape to take on this quest and soon gets in over her head.

What happens next, I couldn’t have predicted. It was fast-paced, and nail-biting suspense-filled excitement. There were some twists and turns I wasn’t sure were believable but were surely fun to read and experience. All in all, this was a great read, and I am adding this author’s earlier books to my TBR.

I thank NetGalley and the publisher, St. Martin’s Press, for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest opinion. I gave this book three and a half stars rounded up to four.

This is my first book by this author and I can't wait to read more! Now, I do have to say thought this got dark and twisty, it did often have a bit more of a YA feel to it. Especially at the start. Still, there was a lot going on, with strong characters.

But I have to admit it did drag and and lag a bit especially at the halfway point. Things became a bit repetitive and I wanted skim through. It was a very long game of like cat and mouse.

This novel did touch on important topics and though some things you needed to suspend your belief for it, it was a great story with some solid facts and important elements.

So over all it was well written and held my attention more often than not. I think there's still a lot to love and appreciate and I think this could work very well for the YA audience as well!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU to NetGalley for an ARC of this book! Chevy Stevens has been my favorite author since I read Never Let You Go on my honeymoon!!!! I could not put it down and I have been DYING for her to write another book!!!!!! Oh Chevy!!!! You did it again!! You had me wanting more A LOT!!!! I would have finished this sooner had I not had so much going on in my personal life! I was SHOCKED by some of the revelations and saddened by some as well. My only complaint and I am not sure if it was because it was an ARC, but sometimes I felt all of a sudden gears were shifted and I was re-reading to figure out if I missed something because I felt like the character just jumped to a new event or explanation, like it didn't flow sometimes. Other than that this was a fantastic read!!!! RECOMMEND!!!! Thank you again to NetGalley!!!!

I rarely give a book 5 stars.

Don't walk on this road. That's what the women of this remote part of Canada are told. Over the years, women have gone missing. And what is true in most places, many of these women were First Nation so really how hard was it looked into?

This undercurrent is built into the narrative of this book. Hailey McBride has a bad homelife. Orphaned, she goes to live with her aunt and her creepy husband. She figures if she can fake her dissapearance, the townspeople will think she's one of the young woman who walked on the road.

After another young woman in town goes missing, her body found, her sister comes to town to try to figure out what happened. No more due to spoilers.

The characters in this book were all extremely well written. Most of all, I loved the friendship between Hailey and Jonny. All teenagers should have a friend like this.

Dark Roads, was my first introduction to the author, Chevy Stevens. This sad tale about young women being killed in Cold Creek along the highway was intriguing. From the very beginning you felt strong emotions for the characters and were very invested in their fates. The unexpected twist in the story were great, since you thought you knew the identity of the killer from the start.

Although I enjoyed certain qualities of this book, I did feel that it read more like a Young Adult novel, than an Adult one, but still feel it was an enjoyable read. I will be on the lookout for more of Ms. Stevens' work in the future

Dark Roads is a dark chilling story about a serial killer that likes to stalk and kill women on Cold Creek Highway. No one knows who is responsible, just that it's been going on for decades. The story is inspired by Canada’s Highway of Tears where over a dozen young women, mainly Indigenous have disappeared for decades.

There's a shady cop and some pretty badass women who are not only trying to find the bad guy but also want to take down the bad cop. Also an awesome sidekick dog named Wolf.

The story is very detailed and descriptive; the reader could really picture the Canadian landscape. I feel like some of the characters could have used a little more development as well some of the relationships between the characters but I really loved Hailey's character and her dog Wolf.

The story is a little slow at times but you can tell that the author poured her heart and soul into the story. The epilogue really pulled on your heartstrings.

Overall a pretty solid thriller. I kept going back and forth between 3 and 4. I think the author's note at the end sealed the deal for a 4 star read.

I have read most of Chevy Stevens stories and loved every one of them including this one. The writing is excellent, the storyline is done so well. I was pulled in and grew to care about Hailey, Johnny, Wolf, and complete disdain for you know who. Another Stevens winner.
I thank St. Martins Press and Netgalley for the opportunity to read an ARC. This is a high 5 star book I really enjoyed.

Orphaned Hailey McBride is shipped to live with her aunt and husband, a police chief in British Columbia. Hailey soon discovers that her uncle is not only corrupt, but a seriously sexually deranged individual. Fearing that her uncle is too powerful and trusted to be ostracized by this small town, Hailey decamps to the woods to escape his clutches.

With Hailey presumed missing, the locals fear she has become yet another victim of Cold Creek Highway, a notorious end destination for murdered young women. But the next body to turn up isn't Haileys, but that of her girlfriend Amber.

The end result is a dark, confusing tome. There were brief flashes of intrigue, but the entire experience left me feeling as cold as dead girl on the side of the road.

Dark Roads is a beautifully written book. I had expected a mystery/ thriller and the book delivers that and more. The physical descriptions of British Columbia are vivid, the characters likeable (except the “bad guys”) and the plot well developed. I was surprised to find the book based on actual events and hope it will help bring attention to the sad history of these missing women. This is the first book I have read by Chevy Stevens, I look forward to reading more by her.

This was finally a decent, creepy AF thriller that had a lot going on in the story and strong characters. There were twists after twists that kept me guessing ; I thought I had this all figured out and glad I was wrong which means it was not predictable which is so important in any book. The ending? OMFG!!! WOW!!

I have not read anything from this author but better late than never. A new to me author to binge on! Easy to read in few days because there is so much going on. Highly recommended.

Thanks to Netgalley, Chevy Stevens and St Marin's Press for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book had me at WOW!!! Right when I thought I knew who did it. I was so wrong. This book was such a page turner, I couldn’t stop reading and I finished it in one seating. I couldn’t help myself. We deal with a dirty cop, a bunch of town secrets, a missing person, and an unsolved mystery. I loved Beth as a character, even though she is at Cold Creek for closure over her sister Ambers death, what she goes through makes me feel so bad for her, I couldn’t control my tears, especially when justice is finally served. Without giving too much away, this book read like a true crime, and little did we know it was inspired by a true crime. This book was just amazing. Thanks Netgalley and the Publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

Dark Roads was a DNF for me. I really enjoyed the first part of the story following Hailey as she ventures moving in with her aunt and uncle. As the story progressed, I was really curious to see where it was going, but then midway through it fell flat and it just did not hold my attention anymore. I do want to finish it eventually, so I hope to pick it up again at a later date.

I have always been a fan of Chevy Stevens so I was honored to be given the opportunity to read Dark Roads.

As always, the novel flowed easily and my attention was captivated early on. This novel was inspired by the true story of the Highway of Tears murders.

Content Warning : Police brutality, sexual assault, graphic violence

All in all I was not completely sold on this. I had high expectations as I loved the premise. However, I found it to be a bit predictable at times.

Dark Roads by Chevy Stevens is the book I didn’t know I needed. I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump, but this book sucked my right in. Dark Roads is so well written that you come to to know the characters on a personal level. I was genuinely sad to get to the end...

Hailey is almost a senior in high school when her dad dies in an accident. She is sent to live with her aunt and uncle, who is a cop. Vaughn, or Iceman, as everyone calls him runs the town and Hailey’s life too. Cold Creek is no ordinary town, tho. Running through the town is the Cold Creek Highway where the body of countless young girls have been found, murdered.

This book is not only a thriller it also tells the story of true loyalty and friendship and a plot twist that is truly surprising!
