This was a good thriller with a lot of action along the way. The characters were likeable and easy to relate to.
I loved this book! Very exciting and suspenseful. I felt like I was on a roller coaster with all if the twists and turns.
Dark Roads is a dark, mystery with strong heroines. Hailey was forced to move in with her aunt and her new husband when her father dies in a car accident. Her new uncle, Vaughn is creepy and uses his police badge to weld his power over everyone. Her small town has a history of missing women and for Hailey all signs point to Vaughn. Finding inappropriate pictures of herself on Vaughn's computer, Hailey flees town and draws on the survival skills her father taught her to escape Vaughn. But when the next girl that disappears is Hailey's first love, Amber. Hailey wants answers but she's not the only one brave enough to look for the truth. Beth's life has been in shambles since her sister, Amber's death. Beth breezes into town to find answers only to find herself on a killer's radar. Two brave girls face down death to bring down a killer in a suspenseful, fast paced, heart pounding thriller with a few surprising twists you will never see coming. This was my first Chevy Stevens novel and I enjoyed this dark psychological thriller. The fact that it was inspired by an actual criminal case was what hooked me.
I’m normally not a fan of ‘prologues’ but this one worked.
The storyline was well written and the characters were compelling. (Best character was the dog.) The twist at the end brought it all together.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a opportunity to review this book. Chevy Stevens is an author whom I have started reading lately because of books such as Dark Roads. Her books are well written and have unique plots that do not all follow the typical lines that similar books usually do. Good Book 4 stars
Dark Roads by Chevy Stevens – (August 2021, Suspense/Thriller) I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley. Hailey McBride is living with her aunt and her super strict husband. She runs away to live in the woods, hoping that people think she was a victim of the Cold Creek Highway killer. Meanwhile, Amber Chevalier is murdered by the killer. A year later her sister Beth arrives to attend a memorial for her sister and other victims and ends up staying in Cold Creek. As she tries to find her sister’s murderer she puts herself in danger. I’ve been a fan of Chevy Stevens for awhile and this suspense read didn’t disappoint.
I thought this was both a psychological thriller and realistic fiction since it is based on the Highway of Tears. There are also elements of magical realism. It reminded me somewhat of The Lovely Bones. The story draws you in immediately as the voice of a victim begins the book but you are unsure who she is. The story is set in a small town with the backdrop of rugged and treacherous mountains. Amber is working in the diner trying to find her way in the world. She is somewhat of a hippie. Orphaned Hailey is lost without her mother and father and living with her obsessive and controlling uncle and compliant aunt. Amber and Hailey find first love but it is short lived. The story involves several people trying to solve the mystery of who is responsible for the recent murders on the highway. I found the book to be a page turner and I was surprised to learn the identity of the killer. This book is for adults but I think high school seniors/juniors could read this book. I would not recommend for anyone younger. Well written. Engaging. Well drawn characters. The descriptive language about the terrain was excellent. I felt like it a movie in my head!
I have been a long time fan of Chevy Stevens and was so excited to see that she had a new book out (it's been toooooo long!). I absolutely loved this book. The setting and characters drew me in from the first chapter. I loved the 3 strong female characters as well. Great story! I cannot wait to recommend this one. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy.
I love a book with a strong female lead that I can relate to. This book was well written. The story instantly pulls you in. The characters are memorable as well.
I’m usually annoyed by perspective change but this was an exception. Beautiful job blending!
Definitely a read that you’ll wanna read again and again!
I have been a huge fan of Chevy Steven’s books for a very long time. The stories are so full of suspense and excitement that it becomes hard to put the book down. This book was no exception. Besides the very interesting storyline, I really loved how the plot changed gears with the changing of a character’s perspective. It always left me wondering what had just happened and what was going to happen. I absolutely loved this book and can’t wait to read more!
Dark Roads reminded me a lot of Big Sky. While Cold Creek Highway is in B.C. I imagined it has the same mountains and trees as Montana, and I totally admit I could be completely wrong. But Hailey has grown up in this wild terrain and she is tough both emotionally from losing her mother at a young age, and physically. She’s just got grit.
And unfortunately, she needs it. Because her father has recently been killed in a car accident and she finds herself an orphan at just shy of 18-years-old. Forced to move in with her well-meaning aunt and Sherriff uncle, things are fine for a bit, until they really aren’t. She has no choice but to disappear, leaving her girlfriend Amber behind.
But there is also a killer stalking Cold Creek. Is it the same person who has murdered up and down the Cold Creek Highway for years or someone new? While Hailey struggles to stay hidden and alive, live continues in Cold Creek, and there’s a murder mystery unfolding and a murderer on the loose.
Dark Roads is a great read. It’s got a great setting, and plenty of twists and turns you didn’t see coming and a rich cast of characters. Special thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advanced e-galley in exchange for my honest review. This one is out August 3, 2021.
This book knocked it out of the park. The best book I've read in a long time. This book has everything, twist and turns, lots of action, and great character development. The two main characters Hailey and Beth were strong female leads. Not to spoil anything...it was awesome how both character's connect. I loved Wolf! Thank you NetGalleyfor this ARC! I enjoyed this book.
Thanks to NetGalley for advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I’ve been a Chevy Stevens fan ever since Still Missing. I’ve read every book since. Dark Roads is probably my favorite to date.
Told between the viewpoints of Hailey and Beth, we’re shown that Cold Creek can be a dangerous place for a girl. Along the stretch of Highway, girls go missing or are found dead. Frequently.
I loved Hailey’s fierceness and tenacity. I admired Beth’s courage and the fact that she wasn’t perfect. I especially loved Wolf, who is the blueprint for a perfect dog, and loved that he comforted both girls. They needed him.
Y’all.. it’s dark. It’s depressing at points, tragic at others. It’s also real. So many go missing or wind up dead. It definitely brings a sense of awareness. When August 3rd rolls around, do yourself a favor and get your hands on a copy of this book.
I am a big fan of psychological thrillers. Now, I love books, period, but reading psychological thrillers give me a rush. I like the feeling that I get when reading them. I like the butterflies in my stomach, the anxiety built up during the book, and the feeling at the end of the book.
Dark Roads is the story of two girls connected by death. Hailey and Beth. After a shocking discovery that makes her home life unbearable, Hailey disappears into the wilderness surrounding the small town of Cold Creek. A year later, Beth shows up, hoping to find peace in the town where her sister last lived. But there is a greater force at stake. Can Beth and Hailey expose what has been going on in Cold Creek? Or will the town, and the highway, live up to its reputation?
The plotline for Dark Roads was fast-paced. The flow of the book was choppy, but I think the author wanted it that way. There was a slight lag in the middle of the book before Beth discovered Hailey and a tiny little at the end. The author addressed the main storylines/plotlines, but she did not resolve the main one about the killings on the highway. Again, I do believe that the author wanted it that way.
Hailey was the first main character introduced in Dark Roads. When the book starts, her father had died in a car crash, and she was living with her aunt, uncle, and cousin. Hailey isn’t comfortable there. She is more at home with her best friend Jonny, racing dirtbikes and stealing parts to keep the bikes running. She is not allowed to ride her bike or hitchhike home because of a serial killer operating on the highway of Cold Creek. Things come to a head that summer when her uncle, Vaughn, starts acting suspiciously, and Hailey does a little investigating. What Hailey finds out during her investigation sends her deep into the forest for a year. Honestly, I would have done the same thing. She was in the crosshairs of a serial killer, and the only way to get away was to disappear.
Beth had come to Cold Creek to try and make peace with her sister’s death. She was a freaking mess, popping pills and drinking vodka while doing her investigation into Amber’s death. I was sure, during points in the book, that she was going to die. I also questioned her getting involved with Jonny. I questioned almost everything she did in this book. But, she did solve her sister’s death, and she brought down someone with that (and I wasn’t surprised at who it was).
When Hailey and Beth came together, the book did pick up the pace. The switching between their viewpoints was almost frantic. I loved that Hailey was virtually a ghost and that she was informing Thompson (the other cop) about what was going on. Her chemistry with Beth was terrific too. She had an instant rapport with her that I loved.
The author did a fantastic job writing the mystery angle of Dark Roads. I had zero clues about who the killer was. I thought it was someone else until that scene with Beth in her car. The reveal took me by surprise. There was another twist to that storyline that I saw coming, but it still surprised me.

I want to mention the author’s note at the end of the book. There was an explanation about the actual criminal case that the Cold Creek Highway was based off. She also addressed that indigenous women were more likely to be killed, and the murders were not given priority. That explanation made sense, and I understood why she chose not to have the other murders in the book solved.
Dark Roads was a fast-paced psychological thriller. The storyline was well written, and the characters were compelling.
I would recommend Dark Roads to anyone over the age of 21. There is violence and language. There are several graphic scenes of a woman being tortured and beaten. There are a couple of explicit scenes of police brutality. There are drugs and alcohol. There are scenes of a person taking pictures of women/underage girls without their knowledge.
Another great book by Chevy Stevens. I found this one difficult to put down! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy.
When Beth's side is murdered in Idyllic lakeside town, Beth and her family are devastated. Beth decides to go there and see if she can find out more about her sister’s death. As Beth becomes entrenched in the community, various people become suspects.
She told from Beth’s point of view. While Beth is a reliable character, she is insufferable at times. Overall I enjoyed this book and kept turning the pages until the shocking ending.
Dark Roads is an emotional thriller that will take you on a roller coaster ride. It’s smartly written and highly addictive. The characters were complex and real. I honestly thought this would be a 5 star read but there was too much animal cruelty. I can’t handle reading about animals getting hurt. I was willing to forgive this the first time but then it happened again and it was awful to read. Yes, Wolf is protecting and always okay but it was really hard to read about. I know I’m more sensitive to this than other people but I just thought it really took away from the story.
This book was actually based on a true story of women being killed on a road similar to what happened in this Story. The story was really good at first but then quickly turned dark and disgusting. I only finished this book because I was interested to see how it would end, my favorite part of this book was when the main character was learning how to survive in the woods.
Hailey McBride lives in the small town of Cold Creek. At a young age she lost her mother and later her father. She moves in with her aunt Lana, cousin Cash and her police officer husband, Vaughn. Vaughn is an overbearing, controlling authoritarian. Hailey shared a close and trusting relationship with her father so these new stricter rules of Vaughn's make her uncomfortable.
While trying to adjust to her new life Hailey discovers a disturbing secret and decides to run away. She plans to survive in the wilderness using the skills she learned from her father to hide out and hoping that people believes she's been taken by a killer who everyone believes is responsible for the missing girls in their area.
Shortly after Hailey leaves her friend, Amber also goes missing and is later found murdered. One year later Amber's sister, Beth comes to town for a memorial and stays hoping to find out what really happened to her sister.
I have been a Chevy Stevens fan since I picked up Still Missing. I wanted to love Dark Roads, but it fell flat. This story had the potential to be a great one, but in an effort to throw the reader off until the very end we spent a lot of unnecessary time focusing on characters whose motivations were never fully understood. It was a decent read, but not one of her best.
This was dark! This book felt a little choppy for me but overall I really liked it. I felt so awful for Hailey... I can’t imagine having to navigate through a terrible living situation after losing both parents. I really loved Wolf 😍.
