Hailey McBride lives in the small town of Cold Creek. At a young age she lost her mother and later her father. She moves in with her aunt Lana, cousin Cash and her police officer husband, Vaughn. Vaughn is an overbearing, controlling authoritarian. Hailey shared a close and trusting relationship with her father so these new stricter rules of Vaughn's make her uncomfortable.
While trying to adjust to her new life Hailey discovers a disturbing secret and decides to run away. She plans to survive in the wilderness using the skills she learned from her father to hide out and hoping that people believes she's been taken by a killer who everyone believes is responsible for the missing girls in their area.
Shortly after Hailey leaves her friend, Amber also goes missing and is later found murdered. One year later Amber's sister, Beth comes to town for a memorial and stays hoping to find out what really happened to her sister.
I have been a Chevy Stevens fan since I picked up Still Missing. I wanted to love Dark Roads, but it fell flat. This story had the potential to be a great one, but in an effort to throw the reader off until the very end we spent a lot of unnecessary time focusing on characters whose motivations were never fully understood. It was a decent read, but not one of her best.
This was dark! This book felt a little choppy for me but overall I really liked it. I felt so awful for Hailey... I can’t imagine having to navigate through a terrible living situation after losing both parents. I really loved Wolf 😍.
Years ago a friend told me to read "Still Missing" I did, and then told everyone else I knew to read it. Chevy Stevens is a fantastic writer and "Dark Roads" is just as good if not better. The characters are so likeable (the ones you want to like) and I carried the book around with me like I was my old middle school self always sneaking the extra time I had in my day to read. As others have mentioned the prologue and epilogue are written so well and draw you right in, and out? Great Novel !
I am SO glad that Chevy is back!! Now, having said that, I wanted so badly to love this one as I loved all of her others. I guess I am in the minority here, as I just really liked it. I felt as though I were reading a YA novel for the majority as the leads are either in high-school or just barely out. I found it difficult to believe that a 17 year old would have those kinds of survival skills that were needed to pull this off. BUT this is the beauty of Chevy's writing! Even though I felt this way, she still managed to make me mostly ignore those feelings and still pull off a shocker! When something happened about 3/4 of the way through and I realized what was fixing to happen, I got such a sick feeling of dread. It was great!! Well done! This was a solid 4 stars for me! Welcome back, Chevy. Welcome back!
Thank you to #NetGalley and Chevy Stevens for this ARC.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the copy of Dark Roads by Chevy Stevens. I’ve never read this author although I’ve heard about her books for a long time. I’m sorry to say I was disappointed. This story was fictionally based on the Highway of Tears in Northern British Columbia. Indigenous Women have met an evil fate there since the 1970’s. The fictional story of a grief stricken sister trying to solve the murder of her sister on this highway fell flat for me. By the description, I expected to love this book. I wish I had like so many other readers but I didn’t. I’m giving it a three star rating.
I've never met a Chevy Stevens books I didn't love, and this one is no exception. The characters were fantastic. Stevens described the scenery to where you felt you were there.
And that cliffhanger at the end of part 1 was one of the best I have ever read.
Best book I've read in 2021. I highly recommend it!
4.5⭐! This was an intense book! Crime fiction fans are going to love this...I sure did! Cold Creek highway stretches some 500 miles through British Columbia. It is a dark, dangerous, and isolated highway where people go missing, travelers and locals. Hailey's dad has taught her everything she needs to know about living off the land. Well when he passes away, she goes and lives with her aunt and her husband who is a cop who bullies her and controls her. She escapes into the mountains and hopes everyone thinks she just left town.
A year later Beth arrives to Cold Creek searching for answers about her murdered sister. And she is beyond determined to find the killer. And can she reveal what really happened to Hailey?!
This was so well written and suspenseful. I seriously read this do fast because I never wanted to put it down!! I will say though, it's pretty violent and gory… you can always skim over those parts if it bothers you. I kinda did that here and there. But it's a really fast paced read, and I'd definitely recommend picking it up!
Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for the gifted copy! All opinions are my own
Chevy Stevens doesn’t pull any punches in this grisly tale that will make you think twice before driving down any deserted highways at night.
Twists and turns are always welcome to make characters more interesting and this certainly has that. If you need a story where the bad guys get surprised and the good girls stick together than this is a great fast read.
DARK ROADS is a chilling, pulse-pounding thriller
First line of the book really grabs the reader: “No one ever wakes up thinking, I’m going to die on a dark road tonight, but that’s the point isn’t it?”
This book has a great storyline but you need to stick with it. At times it can get lengthy and drawn out but stick with it. I promise you won’t be disappointed in the ending.
Cold Creek holds many mysteries. Its location, close to the Yellowhead Highway of Tears, means that local teens are warned from an early age not to hitchhike. Ever. Too many young women have gone missing in the area and not all the bodies have been found.
Hailey McBride was raised by her widowed dad from a young age until a car accident leaves her a teenage orphan forced to live with her Aunt Lana and her creepy town cop husband Vaughn. She discovers secrets putting her life at risk, secrets that even her friend Jonny can’t help her solve . Her dad trained her in wilderness survival but nothing could prepare a teenage girl for the danger she must now escape.
A year goes by and another young woman, Beth Chevalier shows up in Cold Creek for her murdered sister’s memorial. She decides to stay in town feeling somehow connected to her sister. Short on cash she gets a job at the local diner but it’s clear the danger for young women in this small wilderness town is still present and threatening.
Chevy Stevens is back with a tension filled story that presses in on you and makes you feel protective of the teens involved. The wilderness setting and the fear of a serial killer driving the local roads keeps that tension simmering. It’s easy to empathize with Hailey. She’s lost her beloved dad and is treated as little more than a babysitter by Lana and Vaughn. At seventeen she is powerless to stop the couple from selling her family home and all of her dad’s tools and hunting equipment. She also has to deal with her Uncle’s creepy stalker-like behaviour even though her Aunt assures her he is just being overprotective.
Beth is harder to like and arrives in town halfway through the story. She’s walked away from a career path she didn’t like, is hooked on over the counter pills and has been lying to her parents for months about her finances and her job. The death of her sister has made her question her own existence. When she decides to stay in Cold Creek you know she too will now be in danger.
This is a slow building, action filled psychological thriller. Even the most seasoned sleuth will be hard pressed to figure out who to blame and who to trust for all the trouble in this little town. The wilderness setting acts as another main character adding tension to every isolated scene. Not all the danger lurking in the woods walks on two legs. This book will appeal to fans of murder mysteries and while dark in content, I didn’t find the scenes overly graphic. This would be an excellent book for a YA/NA audience. They feel misunderstood and ignored most of the time. Dark Roads would be a perfect fit.
ARC received with thanks from St. Martin’s Press via NetGalley for review.
This was so good!! I couldn't put it down and read it in 2 days (work sucks). Loved the back and forth and would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves a good thriller/mystery! Thank you for allowing me to preview this copy!!
Thank you NetGalley!
Wow, I loved it! Hailey was quite the female protagonist in this novel and the characters were kept minimal which made this one such a quick read. I always love a great suspense novel that can keep the characters minimal and still spin an amazing story that the readers will love.
After Hailey’s dad passes away she is placed in the care of her aunt and uncle. Her uncle is a sergeant for the police department of a small town where they live. When Hailey realizes something very disturbing she starts to make a new plan for herself. Her best friend Jonny is one of a kind. A best friend who is always there, but continues his life in a way too, but doesn’t leave.
The advice continues throughout the story, don’t hitchhike and don’t travel that highway alone. There is a killer on the loose and lurking.
This book held quite the suspense, and towards the end I did not want to put it down, until I knew what had happened to the remaining characters. And most importantly, who done it?
Great story that kept me on the edge of my seat, especially at the end!
Dark Roads uses a unique storytelling style that transitions between narrators in a suspenseful and thought provoking manner. While fictional, the story was inspired by and brings awareness to a real-life situation in Canada impacting indigenous women. I enjoyed the strength of female characters, who had very different personalities and were each finding their own way to grow up and navigate their own life while also enduring an absolutely unreal situation.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an eARC in exchange for my honest review of this book.
Dark Roads by Chevy Stevens is a suspenseful thriller with a wonderful storyline that keeps you guessing from page one. The book opens with a dramatic scene of an unknown girl who was just killed. She shares the way she has died, choking, and the location, a 500 mile stretch of highway responsible for 20 other deaths. Right from the start you want to know more about this highway, the other victims, and especially the girl who was just killed. You have questions that continue and keep on coming.
Hailey McBride, is forced to live with her aunt and uncle after the unexpected death of her beloved father, Her father taught her to love the land, respect nature, and survival skills that most have no idea about. Her uncle is a power hungry police officer who has secrets that are cringe worthy. Hailey learns about these secrets and makes a decision to find safety, Her safety is tenuous and keeps you on the edge of your seat.
We also meet Beth after a tragedy has her arriving in Cold Creek. Beth is not adept in navigating the politics and foibles of small town life in Cold Creek. However, you are hoping that she can escape the tragic fate of those around her. The flashbacks and connections she shares will break your heart already wide open as these characters will become real to you,
I would be remiss if I did not mention the lush landscape and description of the forests hidden within British Columbia. You truly feel transported and can easily imagine you are right there fighting for your life with predators of both man and beast. In addition, you will fall in love with her canine companion, Wolf.
This book is full of flawed characters who have secrets galore. Just when you think you have something figured out you find out you were mistaken, The characterization, plotting and storytelling are simply masterful, Stevens has produced the best yet in her excellent collection of psychological thrillers. You will be shocked when all is not as it seemed. Carve out some time as you will not be able to stop reading once you get started.
I was provided a free advance reader copy from St. Martin’s Press in exchange for my honest review on Net Galley. The opinions shared in this review are my own.
The plot of this thriller pulled me in from the first few pages. What a great read!
Hailey ends up living with her aunt and her husband, Vaughn, after an accident kills her father. Vaughn is a police officer in the small town of Cold Creek, on the Cold Creek Highway where many women have been murdered or abducted over a long time. Vaughn is very controlling, of both Hailey and the rest of the citizens of Cold Creek - under the guise of keeping them safe.
When Hailey runs away to hide out in the woods, after she discovers some disturbing facts about Vaughn, almost everyone thinks she has been abducted too. When a close friend of hers is murdered, the friend's sister Beth comes to town to try and discover what happens.
Told through the eyes of Beth and Hailey, this novel is dark, atmospheric, fast -paced and keeps you guessing. The ending was a total surprise...
This is the first of Ms Stevens books I have read but it definitely won't be the last.
Oh Chevy Stevens, I LOVE YOUR WRITING!!!!! Another incredible novel that had me staying up way too late, and not being able to flip those pages fast enough. Edge of your seat, check. Strong women, check. Surprising twists, check. Imagery that brings you right to set, check.
This one has it all and more. Thank you St Martins Press and NetGalley for this advanced readers edition in exchange for an honest review. This book is sooooo good! Watch the shelves for this one coming early August!
Wohooo another knockout book by Chevy Stevens! Seriously this was so great and an amazing thriller that kept you guessing until the end. Definite must read. The characters are outstanding as well.
Chevy Stevens once again knocked it out of the park. DARK ROADS is my favorite type of book to read, one that takes me away from real life, and keeps me reading until the very end.
Cold Creek Highway has a bad reputation, too many people have gone missing from there. Hailey and Beth both want to solve a mystery of this highway. Each in their own way they try to find the killer and both put their own lives at risk.
Chevy Stevens is a master of storytelling. I really loved this book, it had all the elements that I love in my psychological thriller stories. It had mystery, tension, good vs evil, and the way she fleshed out the characters was perfect. I really felt like I knew the characters in this book, I love when I am reading a book and the characters almost seem to come to life for you. All in all, I would highly recommend this book to anyone. It is a fantastic read and will have you gasping till the end!
Chevy Stevens done it again another 5 star thriller! This book pulled me in from the very beginning. It had my heart racing at points and I did not expect the ending. The only thing now is I have to wait for Chevy to write and release her next book.
