I love Chevy Stevens and was elated to receive a copy of her new book Dark Roads. I’ve loved all of her previous novels and this one is no different. While the story line is heavy, murder and kidnapping in a small town, it’s absolutely addictive. The characters well developed- so much so, you feel their pain and a rush of adrenaline as the story unfolds. The ending was unexpected, but several of the story lines feel unfinished somehow. Hopefully, this means a sequel in the future. An amazing psychological thriller not to miss.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for a free arc in exchange for a honest review..
After reading Those Girls by Chevy Stevens I knew I wanted to read her latest book coming out August 2nd, 2021. This was a quick, fast paced read that draws you in from the very beginning. I really enjoyed the characters and the story for the most part. BUT when the twist was revealed I really wasn't surprised and it felt like it was all over in a flash. Felt rushed and anticlimactic. Maybe I just went in expecting another book like Those Girls. It just missed the mark on the reveal factor for me. I'd still recommend this book for a quick weekend read.
Chevy Stevens is back and better than ever! Dark and gritty, with two teenage protagonists you will both root and fear for, and an ending you will not see coming. An intense and disturbing thrill ride based on a real road in Canada, where girls have disappeared for years. Welcome back, Chevy, this one deserves all the stars.
Thank you for the advanced copy of this book! I will be posting my review on social media, to include Instagram, Amazon, Goodreads, and Storygraph!
Chevy Stevens is one of my go to authors. Her books are dark and twisted and that’s my favorite! Ha! This one kept me guessing and the lead characters were quite likable. It’s enjoyable having strong female characters! Thank you @netgalley and @stmartins press for the early copy!

My favorite thriller writer, Ms. Chevy Stevens, has a new book called Dark Roads to be released in August 2021! I had the wonderful opportunity to read an advanced copy of this suspenseful novel, which, btw, is a work of fiction loosely based on actual crimes occurring on a very long stretch of highway in Canada. The book has two protagonists, Hailey and Beth, and the story alternates between each of their points of view. Also there is a dog called Wolf, who is a lovely character in his own right! Chevy is a great storyteller and this new book is creepy, beautiful, atmospheric, intense, violent, scary, educational and quite emotional. One of the many reasons I love Chevy's novels is that they mostly take place on Vancouver Island and I've always wanted to travel there. Dark Roads is full of nature and I just loved that aspect of it so much! I even learned a few basic things about survival. For instance, when the character Beth can't figure out how to operate her newly acquired propane stove, I identified with her so much, so I asked my boyfriend to show me how to work a propane stove. He did (he has several of them!) and honestly, I feel better knowing that now! Thanks Chevy. hehe
Dark Roads by Chevy Stevens was a great read for me and I highly recommend it! Thank you so very much to St. Martin's Press for the opportunity, and thank you to Netgalley and of course, Chevy Stevens!
I was so excited to receive this new book from one of my favorite authors. Stevens is a master of plot manipulation and creating suspense. Her characters are very real and well-rounded with eccentricities and faults that make them utterly human. The main character in this spends time surviving in the forest to escape an unbearable living situation and the descriptions drew me right in. The ending was fast-paced and satisfying.
I was looking for a book to switch things up and this thriller was perfect. The characters and story are dark and well written. As I continued to read, I became more and more engrossed in the story. It twisted and turned and had me guessing to the very end.
This is my first Chevy Steven’s book and I will definitely be reading other books she has published.
I want to thank NetGalley, the author and publisher for the e-ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are honest, my own and left voluntarily.
I was hooked from beginning to end, an incredible thriller! I definitely recommend anyone check it out.
The story is told by two different women, one looking to escape, and the other looking for answers. It had me guessing multiple times what direction the book was going and I throughly enjoyed it!
This was my first Chevy Steven's book, but it most definitely will not be my last!
This book hooked me. Chevy Stevens knows how to write an amazing thriller. The characters and story were haunting and well written. A dark and twisted story that left me guessing and the ending left me reeling.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and loved Hailey. She was a strong character despite her challenged life. The book had many directions that were skillfully interconnected. The evil characters were truly rotten to the core. The conclusion was so unexpected
Goodness gracious, Chevy Stevens has nailed it with this one! A twisting, turning, suspenseful story that makes you keep reading late into the night or sneak pages while the kids are occupied. I couldn't put it down. When orphaned teen, Hailey, moves in with her aunt and her aunt's creepy cop hubby, she gets the feeling he's more than just overbearing and annoying....he's possibly a murderer. Can Hailey connect the dots and tie him to the multiple disappearance of young women along the dark, dangerous stretch of road in Cold Creek? Can she avoid the same fate as those missing girls? This is a great book, and Chevy Stevens continues to gain momentum with each release. Read this, and you won't be disappointed!
I was drawn into this story right from the start. This Dark Road is a stretch of highway that claims female victims who are never seen again. This has been going on for years and the police are no closer to finding who is responsible for the deaths or disappearances of the women.
Amber disappears while in Cold Creek. A year later her sister Beth decides she must go and find out what happened. Her parents think she is still interning with a law firm and Beth doesn't tell them different during their weekly phone call.
There's a lot going on in this book. In a different story arc Hailey is forced to live with her aunt and uncle-in-law after her father dies. The uncle known as the Iceman is starting to creep out Hailey with his threats and
controlling behavior. She knows there must be evidence of his weird behavior in his "home office" that he keeps locked and forbids anyone else to enter.
The conclusion is solid and brings everything to reasonable end. I thought the writing was very good and the characters believable. I cared about the "good guys" and really disliked the evil ones. I recommend this book wholeheartedly.
I received an Advanced Reader's Copy from St Martin's Press through NetGalley. The opinions expressed are completely my own.

Thank you @netgalley and @stmartinspress for my ARC.
Chevy Stevens Dark Roads is loosely based on the Highway of Tears murders and is her latest thriller. Hailey, the main character, loses her parents and is forced to live with her aunt and uncle. Vaugh, her uncle, is the town policeman. He is creepy and controlling. Hailey decides to run away and let everyone think she is a victim of the highway killer. She spends a year living off the grid, which I found unbelievable. Hailey and her friend Johnny suspect her uncle Vaugh is the killer. They work together with Beth to unravel the mystery of who killed the latest victim, Amber. Beth came to town for her sister Amber’s memorial service. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #darkroads #goodreadschallenge2021 #goodreads #bookstagram #thrillersuspense
This book was amazing and does not disappoint. Chevy Stevens has achieved another rivetingly emotional book that is both intense dark and unsettling. DARK ROADS is my favorite book since STILL MISSING. The reader will simply forget that it's fiction.
Set in the fictional town of Cold Creek, Cold Creek Highway is five hundred miles of British Columbia's mountain wilderness and prime hunting ground for predators. Told from the perspectives of Hailey McBride, a local who's father taught her everything she needs to know about the land and survival and Beth Chevalier, an outsider trying to find her sister's killer while battling her own demons and secrets. The search for the truth places a target on the back of one and threatens the very survival of the other and the readers are not let down when the final pieces are laid out. This book is sure to play on every emotion and then some.
What an incredible mystery, thriller! Just when you think you have it figured out...BAM...no you don’t, there is another twist in the road and even if you don’t want to take it you can’t help it! This is a definite page turning, do not put down until the end book! If you like thrillers this is the 2021 book for you! I highly recommend this book!!
This title had an interesting story line but seemed disjointed in spots. It was a good murder mystery that left you guessing.
This book pulled me in right from the beginning. I was interested in the characters and the mystery and the looming risk of something dangerous happening and then the what happened and the who did it. The middle of the story was a bit slow for me and had a bit too much unnecessary descriptive detail. But keep on reading to find out what happens. Thank you Chevy Stevens, St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the ARC in return for an honest review.
4.5 stars rounded up to 5
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s for this e-ARC. I couldn’t put it down. This was the first book I’d read from Chevy Stevens, and it will not be the last.
Atmospheric, compelling, and beautifully written, this thriller is a slow burn — and I do mean that as a positive. We as the reader get the opportunity to learn about and deeply care about our two narrators, Hailey and Beth. As a result, the twists felt like punches to the gut.
The latest novel from Chevy Stevens, "Dark Roads," is loosely based on the Highway of Tears in British Columbia, Canada but according to the author's note, she changed the setting to Cold Creek Highway out of respect to the victims.
For decades, people have been warned about Cold Creek Highway and its penchant for luring women to its death. When Hailey McBride realizes she has to extricate herself from her uncle's home, she thinks of the unforgiving wilderness. With the help of her best friend, she makes a plan to escape into the woods, hoping her survival skills will be enough to stay alive and that people will assume she was another victim of the killer. For the better part of the year, she stays undiscovered, known only to her best friend and a stray dog, until someone too close to home arrives in town, luring her out of hiding. How can she go back to hiding knowing the dangers that are out there?
I've had a difficult time committing and finishing any novels these days so I will say this was a good novel that kept me engaged until the end. Whether or not it was particularly suspenseful is debatable. Everything is laid out on the table for you so it wasn't quite a thrilling ride. I thought the writer did an excellent job of constructing nature scenes and Hailey's determination to survive in the wilderness, so that worked for me. The beginning of the novel was also very good, stronger for me than the second half. There were a few choppy transitions that made it hard to follow along, so I wish some scenes were a little clearer. I thought the epilogue also confused me more than it added to the plot.
