I read Still Missing by Chevy Stevens recently as a book club pick, and really enjoyed it. I've been wanting to read another one by her and was so excited when I heard about Dark Roads. I flew through this book, I just could not put my kindle down. These characters! My heart broke for Beth and Amber, I worried about Jonny, went back and forth with Hailey but man, she was a fighter. Hated Vaughn with a passion. Wished I had a dog like Wolf. Still thrown by the killer. This was such a great book. I am so thankful for the chance to read it early and am ordering more of her works today. Thank you NetGalley and St, Martin's Press for the ARC!
I’m a huge fan of Chevy Stevens. Her books are so consistent and I recommend them frequently. They’re solid choices for the genre and don’t disappoint.
While this was not my favorite by the author, it was still a page turner that I couldn’t put down and a very entertaining read. Chevy stevens executes her plot ideas really well and I appreciate that she doesn’t resort to highly shocking and implausible twists that seem to be popular right now but that I usually find very detracting from the plot.
If you’re looking for a solid, hard to put down, well done suspenseful read, you can’t go wrong with a Chevy Stevens and this book would fit the Bill for sure.
Thank you to NetGalley for my complimentary digital copy. All opinions are my own.
Dark Roads is the first book I have read by Chevy Stevens. WOW! This emotional book took me on a journey…I connected with all the characters in different ways. The slow burn of the book built anticipation and kept me on the edge of my seat. The plot was thrilling, and I could not have guessed where the ride was taking me. I will definitely be looking for more books by this author.
***** I received an ARC from NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for my honest review. *****
Dark Roads is a dark, creepy novel. It involves a string of murders along the title dark road, and a teenager who flees a desperate home situation to live in the wild. The characters are so well developed that I had to remind myself they were fiction. And that includes the dog Wolf! The world the author has created is spooky and surreal. Chevy Stevens has woven quite a tale, and I highly recommend it. My thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this ARC.
I absolutely love Chevy Stevens' books. She first got me with Still Missing. She is a master at building her characters and giving us just enough backstory to understand what makes them tick. Dark Roads is interesting because Hailey leaves her home and thinks that she can slip away easily and the town and her family will assume she is the next victim of the Cold Creek Highway crimes; missing girls.
In comes Beth and we have another storyline to follow that intersects with Hailey. Beth lost her sister Amber a while back on the Cold Creek Highway and she is determined to solve this crime. This story brings on so many different emotions. Oh, and Wolf, Hailey's dog, is my favorite character. He is very important to the story as far as I am concerned! In regard to the antagonist; you won't figure it out. She is one of the top queens of suspense and is able to pull this off in all of her books.
A special thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this ARC. I love reading and reviewing books and sharing my thoughts with fellow readers.
This was a great book that was hard to put down. It alternates between 2 POVs- Hailey, who has escaped to the willderness around the town of Cold Creek after realizing her uncle is not who he seems; and Beth, who comes to town to learn more about what happened to her sister Amber, who was killed the year prior on a lonely stretch of highway.
The characters in this book were likable, from the 2 protagonists to Amber, to local bad boy Jonny, to the dog that felt almost human The book gave me enough insight into what they were thinking and dynamics between them that I felt like I really knew them. I don't have much interest in the lifestyle that Hailey was going for by living out in the woods, but I found myself fascinated by her resourcefulness and grit. I had to suspend my disbelief a little with Beth, as it felt very out of character that she would secretly quit school and then go camping and hiking in the woods of Cold Creek. That being said, I enjoyed reading about her and could see why she did some of the things she did, even if they didn't seem to jive with what I expected from her.
I thought this story might turn romantic, which I was not excited about, and am happy to say it didn't. There were realistic relationships between the characters but the story really focused on the mystery, which I enjoyed. The unveling of the villain was well done and came as a surprise for me- I think I got there mere pages before the protagonists did. Th4e loose ends were all tied up nicely at the end.
Overall, this was a great read and I really enjoyed it. I have not heard of this author before but based on this book and the other reviews, I will be tracking down more books by her. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
"Dark Roads" by Canadian author Chevy Stevens is an incredibly written young adult novel with non-stop, anxiety-ridden tension from start to finish. The story raises awareness on prevalent issues in today's society, namely the missing and murdered Indigenous women who, hopefully, will one day receive the answers they deserve. Full of horrifying and graphic scenes of violence, assault, and substance abuse, this is not a light read but one that will continue to resonate long after the story is done.
The history of Cold Creek Highway is as chilling as its name. For years, women who have driven or hitchhiked down the highway have gone missing ... some never to be seen again.
An unbearable living situation forces Hailey McBride to run from home, fleeing to the wilderness where she hopes her knowledge of living off the land will help her survive. Afraid to be returned home, Hailey hopes residents of Cold Creek will believe she's fallen victim to the highway killer.
A year after Hailey's disappearance, Beth Chevalier arrives at Cold Creek where her sister, Amber, had moved to shortly after dropping out of high school. The previous summer she was murdered and the police are no closer to catching her killer. Leaving behind her family, job, and school, Beth decides to take matters into her own hands. Isolated in unfamiliar territory where a serial killer is on the loose, one thing is for certain: Beth will not leave until she finds justice for her sister and all the women before her.
"Dark Roads" is an unsettling novel that hits close to home. These are the women, events, and broken families that get spoken about in the news, that are plastered across newspapers and media outlets, only to disappear in a matter of days when they are buried under current events. Stevens brings these issues back to awareness through two female characters whose strengths shine the brightest in this dark novel. Despite their trauma and the horrifying circumstance wreaked upon them, Beth and Hailey's resilience to find answers is admirable and heroic.
"Dark Roads" will take readers down an emotional and sinister path with two powerful female voices to guide them. Stevens has created a fascinating thriller that is simultaneously disturbing and heartbreaking but manages to shine a light on the inexplicable disappearances and deaths of missing women. This is a novel to look out for and one that will be undoubtedly discussed.
Expected to be published on August 03, 2021.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and give an honest review of this book.
The highway which runs through the town of Cold Creek, in Canada,
has been the site of many missing and or murdered women.
This is the setting of a complicated story. A local girl, Hailey, takes off for a cabin in the woods to get away from a strange and controlling uncle that happens to be a cop. Hailey had come to live with her aunt and uncle after the death of her beloved father, in an accident. Her story intersects with Beth, a young woman that has come to town to discover more about the life and death of her sister Amber.
If you enjoy trying to solve the mystery before the end of this book, you may be led down a few dead ends. Hailey’s issues tie in with Amber and Beth’s.
People aren’t always as they seem. The book reaches a satisfactory conclusion
and many questions are answered.
If you are a fan of this author, this book will not disappoint. You will keep reading at a steady pace to see “who-done-it”.
Dark Roads – Chevy Stevens
I have to preface this review by saying – I loved this book! I’ve not read this author before, and the title and synopsis sounded interesting, so I thought I would give it a try. I was immediately drawn in by the first paragraph and captivated by the end of the prologue.
Set in Canada, the story begins with a young woman describing how she came to be one of the victims of the Cold Creek killer – an unknown person or persons who has been killing and disposing of bodies along the Cold Creek Highway in the North Country for decades, leaving an untold number of victims in his wake.
Hailey is a newly orphaned 17-year-old who now lives with her Aunt Lana and Lana’s husband Vaughn after the unexpected death of her father in a motor vehicle accident. She loves her Aunt and nephew Cash, but she and the rest of the area teens dislike Vaughn, a local cop, and have nicknamed him the Iceman. Hailey’s best friend Jonny is a skilled dirt bike rider and has taught Hailey all he knows. He occasionally steals parts as necessary to keep his and Hailey’s bikes running. Vaughn suspects the thefts and strongly discourages the relationship. He harasses Jonny every chance he gets, and continually appears where Hailey is and attempts to limit her freedom and her contact with Jonny, continually warning her about the dangers of running off alone because of the Cold Creek Killer. Hailey, distrustful of Vaughn, and miserable under his watchful eye, carefully plots her disappearance, with Jonny’s help…
A year goes by, and Beth arrives in Cold Creek for a memorial, as she mourns the loss of her sister, one of the Cold Creek killer’s presumed victims from the previous summer. Beth and Jonny become involved, and she decides to stay, finding a job at the diner where Angie used to work, and settling into small town life as she tries to learn what really happened to her. On an evening of over-indulgence at the local bar, she runs into Vaughn, who insists on escorting her home, and she wakes with little memory of what, if anything, had transpired. Uneasy over the situation, she opts to leave her hotel, heading to the local campground to stay for a while, although it seems Vaughn is never far.
What secrets do the mountains hold? Is Vaughn an overzealous cop trying to keep his townspeople safe, or is he something more? What happened to Hailey? Who killed Beth’s sister Amber? As Amber searches for answers, she finds more than she bargained for as she comes face to face with a killer…
Again – I LOVED this book!! Hooked me from the start and had me flipping pages well into the night just to learn the answers to all of the questions above! Great read – unputdownable!!

Hailey finds herself orphaned and living in her aunt's home. She is adjusting to the loss of her father but not to her Uncle Vaughn, who is a stern police officer. She feels harassed by Vaughn on a regular basis and starts looking for evidence that he has done something wrong. She stumbles upon unseemly pictures taken by Vaughn of naked girls. She is even more shocked to realize that the pictures are of her. Hailey knows she has disappear.
Dark Roads is a creepy yet thrilling mystery of girls who go missing in a mountain town in Canada. This story will keep you on the edge of your seat as you wonder who is the guilty party and why the girls are being murdered. There are numerous twists and turns to this story that keep you guessing. Just when you thought you figured it out, you're hit with another surprise.
I enjoyed the fast-paced action and the mystery of the missing girls. The scenery is vivid and the characters come alive. You root for Hailey and Beth and you loathe Vaughn. You try to guess who is the culprit over and over again. You get immersed in the story.
Thanks to Netgalley and St Martin's Press for the advanced copy of the book. The opinions are my own.

There is a road they warn the women about- don't go they say - - women have vanished on this road over the years.
Hailey decides to run away from a bad home situation hoping everyone will think shes a victim of the road
Beth, whose sister was killed by the road killer comes to the town to attend the memorial for the highway killer's victims.
She gets a job where her sister worked and starts to investigate- the more she questions the more shocking things she discovers and when she asks the wrong person the answer she finds will shock you!
This was my first Chevy Stevens novel. It was a fairly quick read, and there were parts of the story I enjoyed. An unknown serial killer attacking young women. Kickass female main characters. An unexpected plot twist.
While these parts were enjoyable, there were several things about the author's writing style that took me out of the story as I was reading. Throughout the novel, there were places were the narrative jumps in time right in the middle of an important scene. As in, something big and important is happening, then it simply skips ahead. There is no demarcation indicating that the scene has cut off, other than a new paragraph, which becomes incredibly jarring and disorienting. It happens during nearly every pivotal scene and feels like a way for the author to skip having to resolve the action. I found this to be very annoying by the time I completed the novel.
That being said, it was enjoyable enough and it's possible I just don't click with the author's writing style.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for sharing the advanced copy with me in exchange for my honest review.
I am so glad that I received an advanced copy of Chevy Stevens' Dark Roads. She is one of my favorite authors and this novel confirms why I love to read her work. The two female characters' narratives intertwine seamlessly and you cannot help but admire and connect with each of them. While the subject matter of male violence against women and girls is disturbing and the threat of abducting women on the highway is terrifying, the most upsetting part of the novel is the afterwards by Stevens. In this section, Stevens speaks candidly about the reality on which her novel is based and discusses the widespread violence against First Nation Women. So powerful and heartbreaking.
Dark Roads took me on an intriguing, heart-pounding ride! I didn’t want to stop reading, eager to discover what would happen next and which turns the tale would take. Chevy Stevens expertly created a cast of characters involved in a shocking mystery. Although the mystery at the center of the book really engaged me, I also really cared about the characters themselves and the intricacies found within their individual stories. Each detail seemed to add up and contribute to the greater story, helping everything tie together. I loved the descriptive way the story was told; I could picture each scene in the setting and this really added a lot to creating the atmosphere of the story!
As with other Stevens books, there are some disturbing details involving trauma & abuse that are hard to read about. However, I find her writing to be so interesting and I get deeply involved in the story that it becomes a part I can get through since it is just part of a larger story that involves so much more.
Thanks to St Martin’s Press and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review. I’ve read five other books by the same author and this new one did not disappoint! Her books maintain suspense throughout and really engage the reader. I will definitely recommend this one to others and look forward to reading more by Chevy Stevens in the future!
Wow! Why am I just now discovering Chevy Stevens?! I'm clearly in the dark but not for long. I devoured this book in days. Such a dark, emotional journey. I loved the characters and the edge of my seat feeling. I was so deeply invested in this story! I don't want to give away too much because you need to read this for yourself! And I'm off to go find more books by this author!
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Chevy Stevens is one of my favorite authors, so of course I was thrilled to get an advanced copy of her new novel. Her books are always 5-star reads for me, and I loved Dark Roads. I really cared about the characters (and Wolf is just the best), and it was hard to get motivated to work the past few days when all I wanted to do was read this book. I didn't see the ending coming at all, and it was SO good. I highly recommend Dark Roads (and every other Chevy Stevens book)...thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for giving me the opportunity to read an incredible book by an author I love! : )
Thanks to Netgalley for an advanced reader copy. I was so excited to see a new Chevy Stevens book- finally! This was true to Chevy form, starting off strong from the beginning and not wanting to put it down. All in all, I liked this book. I did feel there were some far fetched plot lines, and perhaps some of the twists were a tad predictable, but it didn’t take away from enjoying the book. I will say Wolf, the awesome dog, was one of my favorite characters (I love a good book with a good dog). I wasn’t crazy about the dirt bike riding, but that is a personal preference. The ending wrapped up things nicely. I will continue to read this author, and hope there are more to come.
I loved this book. Chevy Stevens did a wonderful job bringing this story to life. I loved how the characters lives intertwined. The story is divided into 3 parts. The story is about a serial killer who has been killing girls in Cold Creek for years. Hailey, who's father has recently passed away, has been sent to live with her Aunt and Uncle. She begins to suspect her Uncle the upstanding police sergeant he pretends to be. As Hailey investigates her Uncle, she finds herself in extreme danger and on the run.
Part 2 of the story we meet Beth, who's sister Amber was recently a victim of the Cold Creek serial killer. Amber was also Hailey's girlfriend. Beth has started an investigation of her own. She's been told Hailey is missing, also believed to be a victim of the killer. She's also spinning out of control, abusing prescription drugs and drinking.
Part 3 finds both Hailey, who is alive, and Beth working together to avenge Amber and bring justice to the town of Cold Creek.
Fans of mystery writers, i.e. Riley Sager, Mary Stone, T.R. Ragan will love Chevy Stevens writing style. Thank you so much to St. Martin's Press for allowing me to read this book before it's official release.
Girls keep going missing along Cold Creek Highway, a long stretch of highway nearly five hundred miles long. The town of Cold Creek erected a billboard warning women not to hitchhike, but women keep going missing. Is there something evil hiding in the mountains? Beth has come to Cold Creek in search of answers and Hailey is trying to leave Cold Creek to escape a dangerous home situation. Can they both get what they want before the highway comes for them?
I've loved Chevy Stevens since I read Still Missing and Dark Roads is another page turner. I loved Jonny and Hailey's relationship and could tell they had been friends for years. Beth was a relatable character and I could feel her loss as well. My favorite, of course, was Wolf. Everyone needs a faithful companion that will fight the good fight (or a cougar) for you.
I did feel like there was some confusing transitions between one period of time and the next. It didn't seem to flow well in some spots.
I really liked the book and give it a solid four stars. Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC of the book in exchange for my honest and thoughtful review.
