*Thank you to St. Martin's Press,Chevy Stevens and Netgalley for providing me with an E-ARC of "Dark Roads" in exchange for an honest review.*
I'm a HUGE Chevy Stevens fan and I was SO excited to read her newest book "Dark Roads" . It lives up to Chevy's standard of writing: suspense, wit and character development with an amazing plot. Loved it.
Wasn't what I'd thought it would be. Not bad, but not great either. I think I was expecting more twists out of it than we got.
This book was fantastic!
It has everything I look for in a thriller/mystery.
Character development was done really well. I got to know everyone in the book well (other than 1), and so I felt what they felt.
The storyline really pulls you in, and keeps you invested in everything that happens, and believe me a lot happens.
Twists and turns both in action, and emotion.
A definite ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.
Thank you to St. Martins Press, and the Author for this ARC.

I received an ARC Kindle edition of this book from NetGalley.
The first 25-30% and the last 25-30% were the best parts of the book. The pacing of the middle portions got a little slow at times. The book keeps you guessing to the end.
I've always been interested in Canada (most of my ancestors came from Canada), but I am really intrigued by the true story elements as well as the landscape. This book has made me more interested in learning more about both.
Love me some Chevy books! She always delivers on thriller books with major suspense! Definitely a must read and would highly recommend!
I was so excited to receive this ARC! Chevy Stevens weaves her magic with this psychological thriller.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read the ARC.
This is my first time reading a Chevy Stevens book, and I'm a new fan. Dark Roads is fast paced and engrossing, with fascinating characters and unpredictable twists and turns. It's the story of a town in the northern Canadian wilderness which has been the site of several abductions and murders of young women, and two young women trying to do what the local police have failed to do for years: catch the killer.
The book is great, and I appreciate the author taking a moment to call attention to the very real problem of missing and murdered indigenous women in Canada. One thing to note is a trigger warning: there are several graphic depictions of violence against women.
This book was really good, and exactly why she's one of my favorite thriller writers (and one I always recommend). I liked that the villain in this one was both hidden AND upfront, and I love the way the different storylines coverged. Also, a dog was a main character. That made me happy.
Talk about a page turner! I read this one in less than 24 hours while ignoring a growing to-do list. I was drawn in from the first chapter and found myself rooting for Hailey, Beth, Jonny, AND Wolf (who was absolutely one of the main characters in my mind!).
There were enough turns and twists to keep me locked into the story without it being too convoluted. Just when I thought I’d figured something out the author would reveal something that turned my theory on its side. I enjoyed the developing relationships between the characters and appreciated the completely platonic but deeply intimate connection between Hailey and Jonny. The ending was satisfying without being too neatly tied up.
A solid 4 ⭐️ read for me, would recommend to anyone wanting a thrilling escape! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
This is not my kind of reading...subject matter...sent to me on Kindle by Netgalley for review...I have read other books by this author and enjoyed...try it...you might like the story.
You know how sometimes you read a thriller/horror book and then think to yourself, well thank God that's just a piece of fiction, and then in the acknowledgements the author mentions that the book is based on a real-life incident :)
That's how I felt after reading Dark Roads by Chevy Stevens.
This book had so many great points:
1) An eerie setting in dark woods, back roads, trails, and a highway where women disappear mysteriously and their bodies turn up in appalling conditions.
2) The story was suspenseful, atmospheric and kept me on the edge of my seat!
3) Plot twists that were difficult to discern!
4) The characters grow on you chapter by chapter, and you end up getting attached to them and worried for their fates.
5) The fantastically badass, loyal, fierce dog, Wolf ❤️
This book is inspired by The Highway of Tears, where many indigenous girls and women have gone missing since 1970's, and the suspect has not been found till date.
Final thoughts - Recommended if you're looking for a sharp, twisty character-based thriller.
Chevy Stevens out did herself with Dark Roads.
Hailey, Beth and Jonny will grab your heart and not let go throughout this novel. And Let’s not forget Wolf.
There is true heart in this book and Chevy Stevens makes sure you feel what her characters go thru. I hated Vaughn, loved Hailey and her determination, toughness and grit.
Another great read!
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Hailey Mcbride moves in with her aunt after her fathers death. She doesn't like her aunts husband, Vaughn who is a cop. She finds something out that scares her and decides to run away. She finds the body of a young woman in the forest. Beth whose body Hailey found decides to come to town to find out answers about her sisters death. The more she learns, the more questions she has. This book was well written.
Dark Roads is the story of a small Canadian town targeted over the decades by a serial killer (or killers) of young women. Some of the bodies are found; some are not. There are no suspects.
The author has crafted a well-written thriller, using a small town, a controlling cop, rebellious teens, deep woods, a campground, a lake and river, and a lonely highway. The action is hair-raising, pulsing with speed and urgency. A big plus is Wolf the dog. My only quibble is the characterization of people of faith here. It doesn't take up much of the book, and I won't deny there are people like this, but I found them unlike most people of faith that I know.
This is not a family friendly book due to content, language, and violence.
A group of people with a dog what could go wrong. This book has characters that you love and feel sorry for the twists in this book with a heck of ending is worth reading.
I love that I'm discovering new authors with NetGalley!! This is my first experience with Chevy Stevens and she did not disappoint! From prologue to epilogue I was hooked!! This suspense thriller was well written and had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end!! I'm looking forward to reading more of Chevy's books!
This book was slow at the start but did pick up further into the books this book was wordy and should have been shorter. The mystery was very good. Also, some of the characters really grabbed you from the start. This book has lots of twists and turns and a surprising ending that I was not expecting
Never hitchhike alone at night if you are a woman on the Cold Creek Highway....the long dark road is known for many brutal murders.
Hailey McBride, a 17 year old orphan living with her aunt, is in one difficult situation. Her uncle is the head honcho of the local police, and he’s up to good. Hailey has to figure out how to get away from him with her life in tact. The book picks up a year later with Beth Chevalier coming to Cold Creek for a memorial walk for the victims of the Cold Creek Highway murders....which include her baby sister.
This book wasn’t what I expected. I haven’t read a good thriller in a while but I was able to figure out a good portion of what the ending would be. You were still thrown for a loop with what REALLY went down and what all happened. This was a good mystery with an interesting spin on the mountain/lake life. My favorite character was Jonny even though he wasn’t in it as much as I would have liked. A good guy who was pretty framed to be a “bad guy” for no reason other than someone didn’t like him. He always tried his best and was loyal as well.....oh and his eyes. Yum.
DARK ROADS is a twisty, fast-paced thriller that will keep you guessing and second-guessing everyone in this small town.
In DARK ROADS, we follow Hailey McBride as she adjusts to life as an orphan on the cusp of turning 18: she lost her mother when she was younger, and now her dad has been killed in a tragic car accident. She is forced to live with her aunt and frustrating step-uncle, and while she adores her younger cousin, there is something off about her step-uncle. Later, her fears are confirmed and she feels she has no choice but to flee their home, even though there is an alleged highway killer on the loose who likes to prey on girls just like Hailey.
I really enjoyed the cast of characters in this book. No character is too minor to be integral to the plot and its development. I definitely found myself wanting to pick this book up and read more of the story. If you enjoy fast-paced thrillers that leave you guessing and hypothesizing throughout the course of the book, pick up DARK ROADS.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for an ARC of DARK ROADS in exchange for an honest review!
Hailey's father recently passed away and she's now living with her aunt, uncle, and young cousin. Her aunt is great, but her uncle Vaughn is the town cop everyone hates - often being a jerk just for the sake of being a jerk. He seems to be a legitimate creep, too. Vaughn doesn't approve of Hailey's friendship with young motorbike racer Jonny, so he treats the young man with disdain and goes out of his way to make Jonny's life miserable.
To get away from it all, Hailey decides to run away. The people in town think she's yet another casualty of the Cold Creek Highway - where young women hitchhiking have been disappearing for years. It seems a serial killer is at work in this part of Canada. Often the bodies of the murdered women are found, but Hailey is simply missing.
That's just one of the multiple storylines in the book (and my favorite of them). Overall I enjoyed the novel, but this isn't my favorite book from Chevy Stevens. This one didn't grab me immediately like they usually do. I've read her entire backlist except for the book "Those Girls" (I have it but haven't gotten around to it yet), and usually I'm gripped from page one. For me, this one moved much more slowly. Additionally, it felt too long. Things moved at a snail's pace for a while and I had to make myself keep reading.
I will say that the ending surprised me - I truly was not expecting the twist and didn't see it coming. Ultimately, I think the book would be better if it was about 80-100 pages shorter. That would make for a tighter plot and force the author/editor to eliminate some of what seemed like filler. Still, I will continue to read future books by Stevens. The story was compelling, but it was less of a "thriller" than I've come to expect from her.
