James Herriot has a charming way of storytelling about his life as a country vet in the British countryside in the 1930-1940s.

The BBC Masterpiece Series is incredible! I highly recommend watching it. The casting is spot on and each episode closely follows the stories in the books.

The audiobook is also well done. Nicholas Ralph who plays James in the series does the narration. Nicholas does a great job of creating a different voice for each character so it is easy to follow along. He also has a lovely accent that makes it enjoyable to listen to.

I would highly recommend this audiobook for readers that love stories about animals and all Memoir fans!

I absolutely loved this book! I tend to read books and forget about them after a few months (or weeks...) but this one has stayed with me. I loved the narrator's voice, and James Herriot is someone I would want to sit down with and have a long chat. He's earnest and hardworking and his stories swing from hilarious to heartwarming, and it is an overall gentle memoir. I strongly recommend this book.

As a newly minted, city-raised veterinarian in rural England, James Herriot feels a bit as though he's been landed in a foreign country where he doesn't speak the language. His boss Siegfried Farnon, is a daunting character and has a younger brother who goes from one scrape to another.

This first book by Herriot, tells of his initial reactions and experiences shortly after becoming a vet. With humor and grace, he realizes he still has a lot to learn and sets out to do so. The heartwarming stories of both animals and people shared are by turns funny, sad, and sweet. Highly recommended.

This book is a classic and the narrator did a great job bringing the story to life and I really enjoyed it. I read this book years ago, but it was nice revisiting it and having someone read it to me.

Who wouldn't love a James Herriot audiobook narrated by actor Nicholas Ralph? This audiobook has terrific production quality and more heartwarming stories than you could ask for; I would recommend to animal lovers as well as anglophiles.

Really enjoyed the narrator of this classic. He really got the awkwardness of the growing into himself parts and captured the growing love Herriot had for Yorkshire. Looking forward to listening to the next one!

Once again, the netgalley app does everything in its power to actually prevent an enjoyable audio experience, but nothing can take away the delight of this audiobook. The narration is excellent. As you would expect, the stories are sweet and gentle and pair excellently with a cup of tea and a warm scone.

The book and the show follow similar paths with the PBS series taking some creative liberties away from the memoir.
Narrated by the actor who plays James in the PBS series, Nicholas Ralph does a brilliant job of both narrating the book and staring as a young James Harriot in the PBS Masterpiece series and I encourage reading, listening to and watching the show.

This book holds a very special place in my heart as my Papaw was a veterinarian and these were his favorites. When I saw the audiobook I knew I had to get it and listen to it. I've read the books many times, but there was something about it being read to me that had all my warm and fuzzy feelings flooding back. Anyone with a heart for animals and humans will adore these books. They explore life, the good and the heartbreaking. If you haven't read these books, do yourself a favor and do so as soon as you can. These tales are wonderful and I truly enjoyed the trip down memory lane listening to them all over again.

James Herriot is just starting out in veterinary medicine. He is green behind the ears as many of the local farmers like to remind him. James has the biggest heart and the kindest soul. He wants to do his very best and it shows.

Ok…I am behind. I have never read this book. So, when I saw it was a show on Masterpiece Theatre, I knew I must read it first. Luckily it was an audiobook at NetGalley.

I will say that this audiobook is very long. It is a good book and extremely unique but a little long.

There is so much in this memoir. I have laughed and cried and learned quite a bit. I enjoyed all the characters, as a matter of fact, I think some of them are people in my home town. This is a joyful and fun read. Also, the narrator, Nicholas Ralph, did a fantastic job. There could not have been a more perfect narrator for this memoir.

Need a good, down to earth listen…this is it!

There is a new audiobook version of All Creatures Great & Small to coincide with the Masterpiece series. What is great is that it makes the books more accessible to those who have never read them before (like myself). I am a big reader of mysteries and historical fiction so this quaint stories of being a 1930s English country vet is a lovely break and makes them more special.
I love that each chapter is not super long and for the most part encompasses a full story (i.e. a collection of short stories) which is normally not my cup of tea because traditional short stories either take to long or leave me wanting but because these are all about James Herriot and the first couple of years of practicing as a vet makes it more cohesive.
If you have never read the books give this audiobook version a try as the author is very good.

The intriguing (and frequently comical) chronicles of the first two years of a countryside veterinarian learning on the job. It's all very British, charming, and timeless. Each chapter encapsulates a specific episode of James's life, like a collection of short stories that build on each other.

Suitable for: Adults or Teens (14 and up)
Between the anatomically-correct medical jargon (which always says it like it is) and the often-awkward positions that James finds himself in as a vet, I personally wouldn't hand off this book to youngsters. Also there are a couple of instances of crude language; other mild cursing interspersed throughout.

The narrator of the audiobook reads it so well. I loved listening to his accent, which really brought the story alive.

The newly released audiobook of "All Creatures Great and Small," written by James Herriot and read by Nicholas Ralph, the Scottish actor who plays Herriot in the latest BBC adaptation, was an absolute pleasure from start to finish. I am not particularly an animal lover, yet I found Herriot's reminiscences of his years as a country vet in the Yorkshire Dales utterly charming, heartwarming and, at times, even laugh-out-loud funny. Part of the success of this audiobook for me was, of course, Herriot's writing--he's a natural born storyteller who manages to combine a wealth of descriptive detail with a straightforward, self-effacing style. But a big part was definitely Ralph's narration, which ranks among the best I've yet heard in an audiobook, navigating a plethora of accents and characters with aplomb to make each voice sound completely individual and authentic. Don't think that if you've seen the series currently airing on PBS this isn't worth a listen. As good as that adaptation is, this book is so much better.

I know that I had read this book decades ago, so when it became available as an audible advance read copy I wasn't convinced that I should re-read (listen) to this classic. I'm so glad that I took the time to re-read/listen to All Creatures Great and Small. I had forgotten nearly everything and it is truly a precious and delightful book. I was constantly smiling and thoroughly enjoying it.

Nicholas Ralph does an awesome job narrating this book and has the perfect voice for this one!

If you love animals and are looking for a wonderful wholesome story, READ THIS BOOK! If you read this book decades ago and thought you liked it then, RE-READ THIS BOOK!

I listened to the audio of this and it was delightfully narrated by a man with a Scottish accent. He transported me right to the Yorkshire Dales of Scotland. All Creatures Great and Small is a collection of (often humorous) events in Jim Herriot’s first two years as a vet. You get to meet the animals he cared for and the people they belonged to. My kids and I have loved reading his children’s stories and I enjoyed reading his biography, so I had been wanting to read this collection of his work. I’m so glad I did.

A great classic great reading listened with my family and we all enjoyed. This collection would be great to listen to on a road trip.

I wasn't at all familiar with James Herriot or with these books, so it was a nice discovery for me. Nice and relaxing, with a narration to match. Great for animal lovers and really perfect for anyone during these stressful times when reconnecting with nature is a necessity more than a mere wish. Now I have a new series search out and I will also be looking out for the TV series.

I have always wanted to read All Creatures Great and Small, but never found the chances. The audio provided this chance. The book was endearing has I would imagine.
