I never tire of Herriot's stories and this is a nicely narrated audiobook by the star of the new Masterpiece adaptation of Herriot's life and works, Nicholas Ralph. I enjoyed his voicing immensely.
Love, love, loved the audiobook version narrated by Nicholas Ralph. What a phenomenal job! So many different characters in this book and he brought them all to life in a bright and beautiful way!
I remember reading All Things Bright and Beautiful decades ago. But so long ago that I couldn't remember the details of the stories any longer. It was a joy to hear it on audio.
The audiobook would be well worth the $, as it is well over 13 hours.
James Herriot is a veterinarian. This volume follows All Creatures Great and Small and takes us from James Herroit's wedding until he is sent off to war.
I was approved to review an advance read copy of the audiobook "forever" ago and had a phone glitch and couldn't review the advance read copy. So I thank NetGalley for the advance review copy, but I actually listened to the final release copy. I'm providing an honest review. Also many thanks to James Herriot for writing and for Macmillan Audio for re-releasing.
This is a wonderful performance of a book out of one of my favorite series when I was a teen. It's not QUITE as strong as All Creatures Great and Small, in my opinion, but that book is one of a kind. Still, this is a lovely listen if you want to laugh, ponder life, visit some animals in Britain, and be reminded about how many good people there are in the world.

The sequel to Herriot's first book, "All Creatures Great and Small," this is a wonderful memoir of life as a veterinarian in Yorkshire. I enjoyed the fact that this is written as interconnected stories and that each one stands on its own. I enjoyed this book as much as the first one and want to move on to the next books. Highly recommended. Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan audio for the copy.
Perfectly voiced by Christopher Timothy, this audio rendition of All Things Bright and Beautiful is sure to calm and lift the spirits of anyone. James Herriot's books have long been a light-hearted escape into the wilds of Yorkshire. His life of working with animals shares the tragedy and triumph of the life of a country veterinarian. Herriot's gentle humor and love of life are shared through his writing.
This, the second of his four books, picks up where the last left off and Mr. Herriot is a newlywed still trying to feel at home and accepted in rural England. Recommended for anyone.
This is the sequel to All Creatures Great and Small and is just as touching and warmhearted as the first book about the trials, tribulations, successes and failures of a small country Vet in the English countryside
A real Feel good story
This was gorgeous, charming, and like wrapping myself in an old familiar sweater. The narrator was fabulous and the accent brought to a whole new level. This whole experience warmed my heart and it was so nice to come back to a childhood home of my heart in this brand new way. I absolutely can't wait to get a copy of this as well.
This was a cute family fiction read. This audiobook contained many tales of a town veterinarian, and was very easy going and sweet. Nothing earth-shattering, but just an all together easy, nice read.Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for a copy of this book for an honest review.
This is a collection of stories about a small town veterinarian, James Herriot. I laughed, I cried and I even know some of these people in these tales! I was captivated from start to finish.
I loved this audiobook! The narrator is fantastic with his perfect accent! Totally made the whole book.
You do not want to miss the antics involved in this heart warming read! The animals and their owners will keep you entertained!
I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.
All Things Bright and Beautiful // by James Herriot // narrated by Nicholas Ralph
I'm honestly not sure there is much to say here. I absolutely adore Nicholas Ralph as the narrator and am so sad to have finished this second audiobook already. He has made this experience so absolutely charming and I couldn't imagine a better narrator for these books. I laughed out loud so many times and he helped me remember why I had wanted to be a veterinarian for so long. The emotions he put into this story... I don't even know how to describe it. I loved using these audiobooks as palette cleansers in between other audiobooks. They are just so easy to pick up and put back down as there are many small stories put together to give us a glimpse into the life of James Herriot, country veterinarian.
I previously recommended these audiobooks for families but I now have to put a disclaimer on that: there is a lot of talk about drinking alcohol as well as drinking and driving in these books. Please remember that these stories happened a long time ago when that was not yet illegal. I myself was raised in Germany so this wasn't an issue for me as alcohol isn't a taboo topic there like it often feels here around children. I still think these books can be a fun experience together if you are prepared to explain those scenes if needed.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
This book holds a very special place in my heart as my Papaw was a veterinarian and these were his favorites. When I saw the audiobook I knew I had to get it and listen to it. I've read the books many times, but there was something about it being read to me that had all my warm and fuzzy feelings flooding back. Anyone with a heart for animals and humans will adore these books. They explore life, the good and the heartbreaking. If you haven't read these books, do yourself a favor and do so as soon as you can. These tales are wonderful and I truly enjoyed the trip down memory lane listening to them all over again.
All Things Bright and Beautiful covers the next couple of years of Herriot's practice as a country vet up until England enters WWII. The stories are great and hit a little more on the personal side sometimes including Herriot's marriage and personal flaws. They do also cover more stories about dog patients which introduce a new vet as well as make the narrator say "bitch" multiple times since the story was about a pregnant female dog (did make me wonder what the narrator thought about having to read that word several times). I liked this set of stories just as much as the first book.
I'm new to this author but I can appreciate the sharing of detail about the relationship between humans and animals and what life is like in another land and another time. Short stories such as these are very helpful, especially in audio-book format.
As always, James Herriot is a delight! The Yorkshire Dales come alive in his books. And Nicholas Ralph is the perfect narrator, especially after watching the new series.
More adventures in James Herriot’s life as a country veterinary in Yorkshire. A beautiful tale with funny, tough, sad moments even better as an audiobook..
A great addition to this series available as an audiobook. Once again I found the stories to run the gamut from fun, emotional, to serious and others in between.
Like with the first audiobook in the series, the narrator tells the story with inflection in his voice and speaks clearly with a great cadence. Animal lovers won't want to miss listening to the classic tales narrated in this audiobook.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book to listen to. The opinions expressed here are my own honest opinions provided voluntarily.
I enjoyed this more than All Creatures Great and Small. While there was still a huge focus on the quirky humans Herriot served, this part of the series did include more animal stories. It was interesting to learn about some of the "mystery diagnoses" and see how much veterinary medicine has evolved over the years. I also liked that this book included more tales of pets and not just farm animals. I still found it to be quite long so while it has its merits, I'd recommend reading or listening to it a few stories at a time rather than reading it straight through.
The second book in the All Creatures Great and Small series!
Yes, this is an older series. But, it has recently been made into a show starring Scottish actor Nicholas Ralph. He brings James Herriot to life in his narration of this audiobook. Just like the first audiobook in this series, this book is a great way to pass the time with a light read with a dash of humor, about life in the rural UK. Herriot worked as a veterinary surgeon. This book, just like the first, is full of stories of interactions with the local residents and their animals.
I recommend this to anyone looking for an refreshing read that will take you away from the issues of modern society.
A great classic great reading listened with my family and we all enjoyed. This collection would be great to listen to on a road trip.
Having read this book many years ago, and watching the original PBS series as well, I was very excited to be chosen by Netgalley and Macmillan Audio to listen to the audiobook. And, it's narrated by the actor that plays James Herriott in the new PBS series. What a treat! I enjoyed this audiobook every bit as much as the original book, and the opportunity to listen to Nicholas Ralph narrate brought the story to life once again. This is a wonderful book and I encourage anyone that is interested in the book to listen to this audiobook and be transported back to Yorkshire in the 1940s. Excellent audiobook! Thank you Netgalley and Macmillan Audio!
