This fits perfectly within the curriculum for my US history and government classes. I thought it was interesting to learn about types of patriotism, rather than a single expression of patriotism, and as a history teacher I appreciated the deep historical context.

A great overview about the debate concerning patriotism: what makes an exemplary citizen voice surrounding one's views on the nation? Framed from the lens of debate between celebratory and critical patriotism, the book shows that discussion over how to properly address one's country, and its standing in citizens' lives, has continually been debated.

In short, the argument we have today about kneeling for the flag is nothing new; while it may take on a new form, the substance has reverberated throughout our national discourse. This is a great work of historical argument that shows that a) our current mood and tensions are not created in a vacuum; they have root in past generations, and that b) we can study such a topic from the lens of humanities, more objectively than just spouting off phrases such as "if you don't love it, leave it." It helps us understand that most of what we argue about is not unique to our own times.
