Only a Cowboy Will Do is a very enjoyable romance from A.J. Pine. It made me smile, swoon and also hurt for what our heroine has been through.
Jenna is turning 40 and for many years her focus has been on making sure her nephews were raised properly after the death of their mother, her sister. She was happy to fill the void the best she could, but she definitely sacrificed because of it. To celebrate her big day, her nephews have given her a two week stay at a ranch to spend time on herself. With this in mind, she creates a "happy for now" list with seven things on it, including having a one-night stand, to help her focus just on her.
Colt is headed back to his ranch and so he is taking Jenna with him since she's going to spend a couple of weeks there. With sparks flying, but Jenna feeling their age difference is too much, they set out on their journey only to be sidelined by a storm. Colt, Jenna and Lucy, Jenna's chicken, end up taking refuge from the storm at the farmhouse of a couple they happen upon.
When they finally get to the ranch will they be able to fight the attraction they feel even though it's obvious what they are feeling? Is Colt the one to help her fulfill all of the items on her list?
This book has a little of everything, which really helps it along. You have the instant attraction, banter, hilarious situations that made me laugh out loud and also a very serious issue that had to be worked through. I appreciated everything about the book and I'm excited to see what Pine provides for us next!

This was a sweet and swoony age difference romance. Jenna has already raised three adult nephews and at age 41 find herself adrift with empty nest syndrome. Colt is 10 years younger and hesitantly dreaming of a love and a family and a future.. Jenna's 3 adult nephews gift her a two-week vacation to a guest ranch where she can enjoy new activities and take some time for herself. She plans to use the time to find her new purpose now that she has an empty nest.
From the moment these two meet they share an easy and unavoidable chemistry and attraction. While Jenna spends two weeks on Colt's guest ranch getting to know herself, she also gets to know Colt and the rest of the local community. The author sets up several deep emotional wounds and balances them with uplifting and light hearted friendships and genuine love. The author set up so many fun situations from the quirky animals to the charming community where their love can blossom.
Jenna spent her life raising her nephews. Now, as adults, they got her a gift, two weeks at ranch. She is even lucky, that there is someone who is driving to that ranch and will take her.
Colt, has been asked to pick up Jenna, he has been told she is an aunt to his partner's friend. When he sees her he is surprised that she is so young.
The more time they spend together, they feelings for each other grows.
They have to overcome the past for happy future.
Loved this story, laughed and cried.
I received a complimentary copy of Only a Cowboy Will do in exchange for an honest review. I'm pretty stingy with 5 star reviews, but A.J. Pine nailed it. It was just a clean, fun, read with just the the right amount of everything.
Colt and Jenna were such likeable characters and it was so much fun to see them develop their relationship. The pace was perfect, and I found myself cringing in embarrassment, laughing with some of the humor,, and rooting for their happily ever after. They hit a few bumps along the way but they were able to overcome them.
Overall, great book that I would highly recommend to friends and family.
I loved this!! A rather unique and endearing romance with a slightly older woman and a younger man. Refreshing to me because it's not the other way around.
When Colt is tasked with taking Jack Everett's aunt up to his and Sam's ranch for a two week vacation, he was expecting an "auntie" looking woman, not Jenna, not her TX twang, not her curves, and hoo boy, certainly not her psychic chicken, Lucy!
They have all kinds of little mishaps, and they still had the sparks strong! They make an agreement, and think they'll stop caring for each other at the end of two weeks? Hah!
A fantastic lighter, less angsty story, well written, and fast-paced. Includes all the emotions, bits of humor (my favorite) and some hardhitting life realities, along with, thank goodness, solutions.
A super HEA that had me cheering and happy sighing.
An ARC provided thru Netgalley, these are my own thoughts, and there wasn’t a novella in with this early copy, so no review for the bonus novella.
Complementary copy given for honest review and opinion from NetGalley. Age is just a number. It does not decide your future unless you let it. This romance shows that 10 years is nothing when love is involved.
This might be my favorite book by AJ Pine yet. Age gap doesn't always work for me, but Jenna was so much fun and so relatable in her struggles and worries that it was easy to fall in love with her and with her relationship with Colt. Their entire "vacation fling" was just so much fun. I loved Lucy the chicken. I loved Jenna's laughter through situations that could have been frustrating or made someone else mad. I loved Colt's secret cinnamon roll-ness. AJ, you helped me move through a book drought in all the best ways. This story took us to places that we didn't expect with bits and pieces of former stories woven in and left me wanting so much more. I can't wait for what comes next.
Jenna Owens just turned forty and her nephews gifted her a two week vacation at a ranch. The night before she leaves, she writes a “Happily For Now” list in hopes to focus on herself after spending so much of her life happily taking care of her nephews. The very next day she meets Colt Morgan, her ride to and one of the co-owners of the ranch. There is instant chemistry between the two, but there are many obstacles in their path. Jenna isn’t looking for a younger man or anything other than a fling, and while Colt also isn’t looking for anything long term, he can’t stop looking at Jenna. Will these two weeks bring them together or end in heartbreak?
I had been in a reading rut, and this was exactly what I needed to get out! This book was relatively low angst and made me laugh (read: I loved Lucy and the goats!). The story progresses at a very good pace that makes you not want to put it down and to see how it ends. Holistically, it was very cute and very enjoyable!
After her sister dies of complications from ovarian cancer, and her brother in law turns to the bottle to cope, Jenna acquires guardianship of her 3 teenage nephews. She gives up everything to raise her nephews, and after genetic testing confirms she has some of the same markers her sister did she undergoes a complete hysterectomy. Although she never bore a child she loves being a mother to her nephews.
Flash ahead to her 40th birthday and the gift of a lifetime: a 2 week vacation to a dude ranch. She gets a ride with one of the co-owner who is a friend of her nephews. From the moment they meet there's a spark, but Jenna doesn't date younger men and Cole is 10 years her junior.
She's made a bucket list of things she missed in raising her nephews and a summer fling is on it. She decides to act on her attraction as completing something off her bucket list. As they enter a relationship they decide it's important to get to know each other. Jenna learns Cole has always wanted a family due to his upbringing and that's the one thing she can't give him.
This is a great story of life, family, and second chances that you won't want to miss!
I received a free ARC eBook from Net Galley and the publisher in exchange for my honest opinions.
Where to begin? I had a huge problem with Jenna. I thought she was selfish and should never have kept such a big secret from someone when she knew how it would affect them. That is not love. I feel sorry that Colt was the only one who had to give up his future dreams. He certainly deserved better after his horrible childhood.
This was a cute book. I really liked Jenna’s character and her search for what her second act in life will be. And without giving anything away, I loved what she came up with! I found Colt to be slightly unbelievable at times, saying and doing things that seemed a little far fetched, but I did like him as a match for Jenna. Lucy was a fun “character”, as were the fainting goats. This book was a nice escape from reality right now. I received an ARC from netgalley, and this is my honest review.
I’ve read several of the books in the Meadow Valley Ranch Series and also the Crossroads Ranch series. This book seems to be the making of a great “marriage” between the two worlds.
Jenna is celebrating her 40th birthday and her nephews (whom she raised after her sister passed) treated her to a two week vacation at the Meadow Valley Ranch. She happens to catch a ride to the ranch with Colt as he was returning from Oak Bluff after visiting his sister. Despite the age difference between them, they agree to have a vacation fling. Of course - Lucy the chicken 🐔 has different plans! That darn bird is most definitely psychic! Well, the heart wants what it wants and Jenna and Colt have to figure it out!
This book brings back characters like Eli Murphy, Delaney, Sam, Barbara Anne, Jack and Ben Callahan- to name a few! Give it a read - it’ll take you on a roller coaster of emotions- you may just shed a tear or two like I did!
I just finished Only a Cowboy Will Do by A.J. Pine. Jenna turned 40 and her birthday wish was to have a "Happily-ever-now" after raising her 3 nephews to adulthood. They gave her a 2-week vacation at a ranch about 6 hours away with instructions to take the time for herself. She was even able to hitch a ride with one of the owners returning to the ranch in the morning. She made a list of things she thought she'd missed while raising her nephews... I laughed out loud; I sighed; I smiled so much my face hurt. I had such a good time reading this story! I loved the characters and setting. This is the first book I've read from this author, and it won't be the last
Jenna has given her all to raising her nephews and, now that they are successful adults starting families of their own, it is time for her to find her own happily ever after, even if she would settle for a happy for now. When Jenna meets Colt she initially dismisses him but then decides that a holiday romance with a younger man might be just wants she needs to kick start a new phase in her life. Colt isn't looking for forever either even if he does look after her the way no one else ever has. When two weeks of fun and flirtation starts to feel more real than a distraction can the two of them agree on a future?
I loved seeing Jenna get her due after being such a wonderful and supportive figure in the lives of her nephews. Colt was a hero who was truly worthy of her. While they both had important things to work through in order to make their relationship sustainable, this was a really low angst read and let me stay filled with warm fluttery feelings from start to finish,
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Nice to catch up with Jenna from Pine's previous series. She turns 40 and puts together a list of 7 things she wants to accomplish during a two-week trip that her nephew gives her. Falling for her fling is not a part of her plans but Colt is hard to ignore. This book has a ton of ice cream in it and if you know Pine and her love for pop culture, there are a lot of little fun references along the way.
Tropes: forced proximity, road trip, friends with benefits, older woman/younger man
Discussion of physical abuse and cancer.
Excited for Aunt Jenna and her crazy hen, Lucy, to get a love story.
While Jenna gave up her life to raise her nephews, she feels she gained more than she ever could have imagined with the way her life took a 180 when she was just a young woman herself. Now 40 and her 3 nephews paired off and starting their own families, it's time for Jenna to step out on her own, starting with a 2 week vacation on a ranch. I love the crossover to the Meadow Valley Series and the sexy Colt Morgan. Colt assumes the aunt he is picking up is an elder lady he will enjoy a nice drive back with to Meadow Valley. To his surprise, Jenna is lots younger and very attractive.
While Colt and Jenna have hilarious adventures simply getting back to Meadow Valley, their attraction to one another is immediate and intensifying. Jenna is hesitant about starting anything with a younger man, but she's ready for a vacation fling. Colt has been burned by what he thought was a serious previous relationship, he wants the family and children, but Jenna doesn't want anything but a fling, despite their growing feelings beyond attraction.
Jenna and Colt are everything you want in a book couple: instant attraction, charm, fun, hilarity, sexy banter, drama making them hold back, an issue seemingly impossible to overcome, love that conquers all!
Great read! I LOVE A.J. Pine's writing.
This author writes the sexiest, most romantic couples in her books. In Only a Cowboy Will Do by A.J. Pine heroine Jenna Owens and hero Colt Morgan are a very sexy, romantic couple. Jenna is given a two week vacation to Meadow Valley Guest Ranch for a 40th. birthday present from the three nephews she raised after their mother dies. On her to-do list there is to have a fling. When Jenna meets Colt it's instant attraction. Their fling turns into more than they originally bargained for. But after all, "Love conquers all."
Jenna just turned 40 and is gifted a 2 week vacation from her three grown nephews where she can let loose and finally give herself the vacation she deserves. Upon arriving at the ranch, she meets a cowboy named Colt and he doesn't fit her traditional dating rules (she won't date younger men). However, she decides to give this sweet cowboy a chance since she's only there for 2 weeks. Colt dreams of having a large family and is why his past relationship didn't work, but Jenna has secrets that could ruin their future. Their love is tested in this book with future dreams that don't align and it comes down to Jenna and Colt to decide if their love is enough to move forward together.
The author really delves into the characters which will have you laughing, loving, and crying for them as the story progresses. You'll be anxious to see how this one turns out and it won't disappoint.
Jenna Owens has spent her adult life raising her three nephews. At the age of 40 she is ready to finally focus on herself. For her birthday her three grown nephews decide to send her to a ranch for two weeks as just the beginning of a massive thank you for the mother figure that she is.
.
For once in her life she decides it’s time to have a little fun. She makes a list and one item on her list is to have a vacation fling. Somehow, her two week, no strings attached fling with Colt turns serious immediately.
.
Drawn to each other and each with a heavy history, I love these two characters and I rooted for them the whole time. This story focuses on the power of love and family not necessarily build by blood. The strength of a good and loving foster family and being the security of a loving adult in a child’s eyes. This book has frivolous fun, instalove, good friendships but it also has love and depth and beauty. Also, the use of a children’s book that brought a sense of safety and security during life’s darkest moments made me cry.

Only a Cowboy Will Do is a sweet and touching story. Jenna is getting a two week vacation at a ranch, after years of looking after her now adult nephews. She didn’t count on Colt, a cowboy, younger than she and determined to have a large family. They embark on a fling, but it quickly turns serious. Colt is head over heels for Jenna, but could something she hasn’t shared with him railroad their relationship? I wondered how this would play out once I knew what Jenna’s unshared reveal was. I think the story is very realistic. My two favorite scenes were the cookie scenes and the Franki Valli sing along scene. Can’t forget about the pet chicken, Lucy, and all the feathers she ruffles. It’s a tender romance and you’ll want to see how it turns out.
