In 1875 The Gingerbread Man folk tale was first told, since then the story has been passed down from generation to generation. The Gingerbread House is like an up-to-date sequel to that tale, perfect for children today.
So how do you catch the Gingerbread Man? With a Gingerbread House, maybe!
In this rhyming and beautifully illustrated young children’s picture book, we follow the Gingerbread Man as he lets us know what will keep him from running away. He wants a house to live in but it must have sweets, oh and maybe a car too.
The plot is a lot of fun and I really enjoyed it, I’m confident little children will love it too. It certainly brought the Gingerbread Man into the twenty-first century with his moonwalking and hop-hop dancing.
I can see this being a book wanted over and over again at bedtime. Ms. West has done a fabulous job carrying on the years-old tale and if you love the original I suggest you give this one a read too.
This story just wasn't right for me. The cover is absolutely stunning and wish that this style of illustration was carried through the entire book. Some illustrations feel as if they are rushed or unfinished. While there was cute parts of the story, the storyline didn't seem to flow as well as I would hope for a childrens book and there were some parts I had to explain to my kids as they were confused.
This is a cute book with some wonderful, vibrant illustrations. I think the little ones ages 4 and up would enjoy the rhyming and the antics that the gingerbread man comes up with.
I do like the houses etc that are shown, they are cute and I would like to try my hand at one some day.
The only thing I don't like is the message that maybe "the gingerbread man would stay around if you just built the right house". The younger kids might think that this could really be true? That's my only problem with the book.
I can recommend this for a fun, original and brightly illustrated Christmas book for children ages 4 and up.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
The cover and gorgeous illustrations really draw you in. A fun quick bedtime story or story to share with the kids while baking cookies. The rhyming makes it easy for younger children to follow along and the illustrations are beautiful. Definitely a book to reach for during the holiday season and would give some great ideas for gingerbread house decorating.
Absolutely adorable book for this holiday season about baking gingerbread men & houses. It will definitely make your little one squeal with delight!

The Gingerbread House is what I think you would get if you mixed the original Gingerbread Man story and Elf on the Shelf. It is about how if you make a gingerbread house for the Gingerbread Man, he will leave you a present on Christmas Day.
The story is cute, the art is also cute at times but sometimes just looks all photoshopped together, I think it could be better but it's not horrible. The rhyming is sometimes a little off as some other reviewers stated, but I don't think toddlers will necessarily notice. I think it will make a good Christmas read to do with little ones before you build a gingerbread house or bake gingerbread men (or both).
I was so intrigued by the cover that I just had to get this with my 4 children in mind. The illustrations are exactly what you need during this holiday season. My kids and I enjoyed every minute, every page of this book and I can’t wait to get my hands on the physical copy to gift them for Christmas.
Thank you so much for the arc, netgalley. It’s perfect for my kids.
A beautiful sweet book with fabulous illustrations! Every holiday season, gingerbread men are looking for a lovely gingerbread house to stay in. This book encourages children to build an enticing house for them, otherwise they may not stay. This book provides the impetus to start a new holiday tradition of building a gingerbread house that’s beautifully decorated in order to encourage the gingerbread man to stay. We loved it!
If you're ready to begin a gingerbread construction, wait! First read this delightful holiday book! It is a perfect introduction to making a seasonal gingerbread house, truck, boat, or whatever! The pictures seem to dance on the page - rich in detail and color and so lifelike! The story rings poetically and is very captivating! This story belongs in the home of children everywhere and hopefully wherever there are gingerbread cookies, too!
Thank you to next gallery for an arc of this book go an honest review. Cute Christmas book based on keeping the gingerbread man in your house by building him a gingerbread house. My three-year-old loved that the book rhymed, and as soon as we finished she wanted to read it again. Very nice illustrations especially the cover. My three year old kept flipping through the pages on my iPad looking at the illustrations and asking me about what I saw in the picture. The book did a good job kept it my youngster engage, and for that it is easily worth five stars. Overall solid Christmas book geared towards children.
Oh my goodness! I absolutely adored this book! The illustrations were perfect! My kids enjoyed it as well.
I was really unimpressed by this book. The art style was inconsistent. Some pages looks like clip art while others look like illustration....some pages even had some perspective issues. The storyline was rather dull. All in all, for me, this did not emit any magic for the season.
This was an interesting and cute little story. The pictures were nicely made, the letter T was a little difficult to tell from an L as an uppercase because of the font otherwise it went smoothly.
This is something that little kids can just look at the words for letter/word recognition and pictures for enjoyment.
I read this to my kids and it is a pretty quick read, they enjoyed and said they'd like to get the book when it comes out.
I would definitely recommend this one!
Thank you Netgalley, Anne Victory and the publisher for the eARC!
This book is perfect for those ages 7-9. If you are looking for a Christmas book for your children to start reading now this is the book for that! I get you all ready for the holiday and gives you all of the warm fuzzy feelings! After I read this I had my son read through it too and he loved it! This is a perfect book to read to your children too if they are still too young to read!
Thank you #netgalley and #victoryediting
A cute story for kids about gingerbread men coming alive with superb illustrations. I especially enjoyed their dance moves! A must read for kids during the holidays!
My six-year-old daughter loved this story! The illustrations are beautiful. When I asked my daughter what her favorite part of the story was she said the ending when the gingerbread man said they could eat him.
I will be looking for this in hardback, it will make a wonderful addition to our Christmas book collection.
Thank you so much to NetGalley for this arc. This was so cute, and the perfect holiday read. I like how this expands past gingerbread cookies and more so what happens to them after they are baked. It helps to show all the fun of when they come to life and keeping them around. This was really fun and enjoyable, and I loved it. That is why it deserves 4.5/5
This book was received as an ARC from Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
This was such a wonderful holiday story that brought a lot of holiday cheer which is needed throughout this holiday season with the effects of COVID-19. I have heard and read so many variations of the gingerbread man that it is one of my all time favorite holiday stories and now reading the Gingerbread House and having the infamous gingerbread man still part of the story with his infamous 'you'll never catch me!" brought back so many memories that I could not help but to have a smile on my face and my heart be warmed when I finished this book. I really can see doing this book for a story time and sharing it with our elementary schools to still bring holiday cheer because even in the toughest times, everyone deserves some holiday cheer.
We will consider adding this title to our JHOLIDAY PIC BOOK collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
This was a fun festive read!
The author has written the book really well and I loved the flow of the story.
I liked the illustrations too and they were really cute and worked well to bring the story to life - I loved the different take on the traditional approach too - we had actually bought my daughter a Gingerbread House to decorate in the week so she loved this one!
It is 4 stars from me for this one!
My family loved this delightful holiday story about a gingerbread man! The Gingerbread house is a funny tale for anyone who is ready to get into the Holiday Spirit. Laura Gia West does a lovely job of mixing humor with heart throughout the story. My kids said their favorite part was the "Hip Hop Dance." The illustrations are simple and beautiful with just the perfect details for the story. The Gingerbread House is sure to be an instant family classic to kick off the holiday season.
