I had hopes that I would read "The Gingerbread House" and want to add it to the library of gingerbread themed books I love to read with my students in December. Despite very cute pictures, there was no story to this book. IT was a rhyme that often fell short with some strange choices of words for little kids. This book would be ok to have to look at pictures at home, I wouldn't buy it for school.
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The story is sweet; just right for a little bedtime tale for a little! The illustrations will look wonderful in glorious color! Lots of things to look at and name. I am sure this will become a bedtime favorite in December! Early Christmas gift?!
THE GINGERBREAD HOUSE
The cover of this book sucked me in, six cute little gingerbread men with six equally adorable decorated houses. But unfortunately for me, the best part of this book was the illustrations as this story lacked any depth or meaning. I found things very odd in this story, such as talking about him getting a degree, or dabbing with reindeer. It didn’t feel like a cohesive story, and was all over the place for me. There are plenty of other wonderful gingerbread tales out there, and this one didn’t seem to live up to that standard.
This is a fun rhyming story about the traditional gingerbread man in a modern world. The illustrations are wonderful. I think the book will have great appeal.
I adored the illustrator’s work in this book, the cover is so inviting! I really wanted to like this modern version of the gingerbread man but I’m not sure.... ‘dabbing’ I understand a younger audience might have come across, school age, yes, but perhaps not younger than that. ‘Lodging’ and ‘real estate’ - I know these are words that many from a younger audience would not understand. On the whole, it’s a lovely, colourful, fun and seasonal story but I do have reservations about some of the words used, like the latter two; it seems achieving the continuation of the rhyme has come somewhat at the cost of losing the comprehension of the audience who would appreciate the gorgeous illustrations and story. But that’s me nitpicking, there is plenty in the book that would appeal.
This was a super cute story about a Gingerbread man and his little story through the holidays. The art and illustrations were cute! This was a fun book, perfect for this time of year!
I was given an advanced reader's copy via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own
A darling, clever concept for a holiday read.
This was a delight for my four year old and I, with simple and mostly clever rhyming text and fun, festive illustrations.
It’s a great concept for a quick Christmas story, and makes for a fun companion activity to baking gingerbread men and building gingerbread houses for the holiday season.
Enjoyable and free of the over-sentimental schlock that plagues holiday stories, this is a cut above most of its ilk and—paired with a gingerbread house baking kit—would make a great Christmas gift for youngsters.
The Gingerbread House is a holiday treat! Filled with snappy rhymes and a spunky protagonist, it's a great book to read for the holidays (ideally, before baking ginger bread cookies./houses!)
This is a cute enough Christmas book. There doesn't seem to be an underlying theme or message - it's certainly not religious or moralizing - but rather built around a mischievous gingerbread cookie and finding fun rhymes. Definitely for younger kiddos as I think older kids might be bored by the lack of plot and substance.
The Gingerbread House is a different type of story about catching a gingerbread man by building him a house. This could be a cute new little tradition for families. The cover could be a little confusing. It makes you think that the book would be about a village of gingerbread men, instead it was about one and building him a house.
The description caught our interest as did the wonderful front cover. The text is written in rhyming verses and has a nice Christmas theme throughout.
It is similar to the traditional Gingerbread Man story but has a festive twist. The book starts off well. Instead of chasing the biscuit he gives the bakers a task to complete so that he will stay for Christmas.
We loved the full page illustrations but some of the pages feel a bit empty with only a little section of text or part of a picture. I think the book could be improved with the story being divided between less pages so it flows better.
It is a nice idea and will be fun for families to read together to young children as a Christmas time bedtime story. Everyone will like the illustration and children will like the rhymes.
A big thank you to Netgalley and Victory Editing Netgalley Co-op for a chance to read and review an arc of this adorable book!! My kids and I all adored this and now we can’t wait to build a gingerbread house for our gingerbread man!! I can see me reaching for this each year as we prepare for the night of gingerbread creating. Love it!
This was a super fun story to read! A great book to put us into the Christmas spirit, although, a little early. We're a Christmas family so we couldn't help it. A simple and great concept for a children's story book. I am not a big fan of the illustrations for this book but my children did not care. They were happy to see the gingerbread man, all the elves, gingerbread houses, all the Christmas-y things. It was a bit above my daughters reading level but the story really made her want to read it herself, with help. This was a great Christmas book and I could easily purchase this book and make it part of our Christmas library.
This is a cute and festive story to get little ones in the Christmas spirit. The illustrations are great and this is a good read-aloud storybook and perfect holiday gift. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy.
This was a fun book, loved the illustrations (including the moonwalking gingerbread man and the dabbing gingerbread man!). Would I buy it? No. Would I borrow from the library? Yes!
The illustrations are really cute and inviting. They definitely look like they could be animated and made into a little video clip (like Pete the Cat does). I like that it rhymes, but I don't really like how fast-paced it is and how pushy the gingerbread man was. It's a cute little book to read at Christmas time though.
I know of several children will love the sing song type rhymes that run throughout this book. As a baker, I love the line "Home is where the cookies are!"
Super cute illustrations and story, loved it! Great twist on the classic holiday and gingerbread man story.
Okay this is an adorable holiday book and would be perfect for story time to a group of kids! The illustrations are clean and cute and the story is fun!
I just loved this story it was the cutest story about the gingerbread needing a home. I loved the rhyme and repetition in the story. My grandson adored this story , I would love to have a copy at home and for my library at school. I would love to make some things to go along with the story for my teachers pay teachers store. The illustrations in this story are adorable and the plot just fit right at this time of the year. This story just popped with the lively gingerbread man , I loved when you had him dab. Just the cutest story.
